Networking trouble G5 dual 1.8 GHz

When I try to connect to any computers on our network via the command-k function, my computer locks up. I try to browse for computer or try to connect directly to a computer via afp and the same thing happens. I get the login screen and the select volume to mount screen ok. When I select a volume to mount and hit ok, I get the spinning beachball and it will not recover with out a restart. I have tried to connect to several computers and the same isssue happens.

I have an Apple Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3 GHz/6GB RAM/500GB HDD/Superdrive PowerPC Desktop and just bought an Airport Extreme card for it.  The card is recognized but will not see the in-house network.  This is a pre-intel computer.  Do I need an additional antennae?   If so, which one because my research is confusing me about what is supposed to work with this computer.

Please check out the following Apple Support article to see if your particular Power Mac model supports an external Wi-Fi antenna.

  • Power Mac Dual 1.8 Ghz: How do I connect to wireless network?

    HELP!!!
I have this Power Mac Dual 1.8 Ghz with 10.4.11 OS. I used to use wire cable to connect the internet, but now the place I rent recently only provides wireless network. I was able to connect wireless network with my Windows Laptop.
Question: How do I connect my Dual 1.8 OS 10.4.11 with wireless network? I only see Internal Modern, Built-in Ethernet and Build-in FireWire options.

You can go the OWM route and get the airport extreme card and antenna

Google the part numbers for more vender choices,
Or, you need to get a PCI WiFi card and antenna. BDAqua or Japamac have posted alternatives which are actually a little cheaper than the Apple parts.
The third alternative is a USB-based wireless adapter.

  • Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 GHz running 10.5.8 cannot burn DVD+R

    Hello all-
I have a Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 GHz running 10.5.8 and I cannot burn DVD+R. Does that make sense?
If I insert a DVD+R into the drive, it just spits it back out. I've tried several discs so it's not a faulty DVD.
    Help.
    Thank you.

I've tried several discs so it's not a faulty DVD
I trust that is several different brands, not several different discs from the same spindle/pack?
    Media varies.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
If you haven't tried a different brand, try a Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.
You might also try burning in a new user account to rule out account software troubles.

  • Networking troubles with ABIT BP6 board and Solaris 8

Hi, Im trying to install the Solaris 8 software on my ABIT BP6 board with a Compaq NetFlex3 10TX NIC. This is a SMP board (dual celeron) but is not on the HCL (the NIC is).
The installation gives no problems at all (except for a memory conflict between memory devices), and SunOS works pretty well except for networking... using ifconfig -a shows me the networking interface and the loopback interface but I can't ping outside of the Solaris machine (or ping to the Solaris machine from an other machine).
I know that the board is not on the HCL but I had no networking troubles with Solaris 8 early access.
After instalation of the software and the reboot, I get the status as below:
    >
    configuring IPv4 interfaces: cnft0.
    Hostname: MILLIWAYS
    Configuring /dev and /devices
Configuring the /dev directory (compatibility devices)
The system is coming up. Please wait.
    checking ufs filesystems
    /dev/rdsk/c0d0s7: is clean.
    All devices are configured...
    Configuring network interface addresses: cnft0.
    RPC: Timed out
    Starting IPv4 routing deamon.
    starting rpc services: rpcbind done.
Setting netmask of cnft0 to 255.255.255.0
    <
As you can see I get a time out while configuring the NIC. I tried a lot of different things (and some bad ones like using the device driver disk of the EA version with the cd's of the final version but no luck there...)
Anyone with the same problems or any help?
    Thanx, Marcel

    Hi maeck,
I'm sorry that my message is off the topic. Could you help me with a problem that I have with Abit BP6 + Solaris 8 combo?
I'm encountering error message on console screen during booting/reboot/shutting down like "APIC error interrupt on CPU 0. Status=2" where CPU can be 0 or 1, status can be 0, 2, 4 or 6.
If I let my dual Celeron400 run at 400MHz, the frequency of errors is few and far between. Though it still happens. If I overclock them to 558MHz like I udually do, it will show at least 4 times during a booting process. I've tried MPS 1.1 and 1.4 settings. I've also tried turning off all cache, delayed transaction, passive release settings.
In addition, the overclocked system tends to lock up while it runs flawless in Windows 2000 Professional and Redhat 6.1. Do you have any similar experience?
    My system config:

  • POWER PC G5 DUAL 2.5 GHZ FREEZING EVERYTIME THE FINDER OPENS.

I HAD TROUBLE SINCE THE VERY BEGINNING.
I HAVE A DUAL 2.5 GHZ G5 WITH 7 GB RAM. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A FLAWLESS INSTALL SINCE I HAVE A TOTAL OF 2.6 TB STORAGE. INSTEAD IT HAS BEEN A TOTAL NIGHTMARE, SLEEPLESS NIGHT WITH A CRASH-FREEZE AFTER FREEZE. I DID EVERYTHING POSSIBLE ERASE PRAM, TRY TO OPEN W/O XTENSIONS (DID NOT EVEN START THAT WAY) REINSTALL WITH ARCHIVE, INSTALL IN A SECOND HARD DRIVE OF MY FIVE ONES. NOW I AM A LITTLE DESPERATE . I SPOKE OVER AN HOUR TO APPLE SUPPORT. THEY RECOMMENDED THE INSTALL/ARCHIVE, AND GAVE ME A CASE # TO CALL BACK, IN CASE WOULD NOT WORK, WELL IT DID NOT WORK AND I HAD TO COME TO WORK. I NEED HELP.
    THANKS

Me too! Dual 2Ghz with 3mb ram & multiple drives. I got 10.5 working - went well for about a week with occasional problems - keyboard keys sticking, occassionally hanging (have to shut down & startup using power key). Purchased a new keyboard thinking this was the difficulty + using bluetooth mighty mouse. Upgraded to 10.5.1 - experienced increased hangs. Zapped parameter ram (System started up on failed install on 2nd disk - grey screen of death - so inserted Leopard install disk, did permissions and disk check, chose startup disk - hung on choice. Since then have had repeated increasing slowness of system getting stuck on spotlight indexing which is highly variable - taking from 5 mins to 12hours to complete, meanwhile unable to open programmes. Occasionally able to open Mail but hangs, unable to force quit anything. Have tried to clear system by running chron, cleaning caches etc all to no avail. Tried reinstalling 10.5 (Archive & install)-hung in process, so now restore system from backup to 2nd disk with system on it, hangs at restart.
Now going to try shut down via power button again & see what happens. Failing this I'll do a erase and install (or try) - been trying to avoid this as a lot of very important work on the drive in question, had put faith in Backup & time machine so should be on third backup disk but as I can't access this have no way of knowing. Also heaps of software to reinstall! Frustrated as for the last 4 days have spent almost entire time trying to get computer running rather than doing work. This is costing me lots. Left with the conclusion if this doesn't work I'll have no choice but to purchase new computer in order to complete work.
Desperate for any assistance anyone could render. - Disks check out fine both using HD utility fsck etc.
Very interested in any progress you have on this via apple.
    Cheers

  • PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 GHz Bootup issues

So, although I have much knowledge about Windows and a decent amount of knowledge about Linux Operating Systems, I know little to nothing about Mac OS X. My knowledge of iOS 8.1.2 is very good, but switching to Apple as my main provider of computer and phone systems and parts has been frustrating. I have 3 PowerMac G5's, each the dual 2.0 GHz models that I recieved as a housewarming gift to the Apple community. However, when I start up the computer, I get a flashing symbol with the "Finder" application logo, then a square with a "?" In it, then back and forth with a second between each flash. I've tried holding the option key with and turning it on (with no CD, with a copy of OSX mountain lion on a disc in the drive, and with a copy of Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS burned to a disc in the drive). I have tried installing the Mac OSX Mountain Lion to the hard drive on a separate computer, then booting it using the PowerMac, but to no avail. Can anyone help me with this issue? I've fallen for Apple and won't revert back to windows, but don't want to buy a whole new Apple computer.

  • Fan speed problem Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC - please help

Please HELP, I have a fan speed problem with my Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC
This is a NOT an Intel machine. I am running Mac OS X v10.5.8
    Power Mac G5 - PowerMac 7,2 - Power PC 970 (2.2) - 1.8 GHz with 2 CPUs - L2 Cache (per CPU) 512 KB - Memory 8 GB - Bus Speed 900 MHz - Boot ROM version 5.1.5b1
I have included below Links to download a sound file (.m4a) that I recorded of the fan speed problem and both a .pdf and .spx files of my system profile.
    download sound file
    http://homepage.mac.com/rep3/filechute/myG5dualsFans.m4a
down load .spx file of my system preferences

down load .pdf file of my system preferences
    http://homepage.mac.com/rep3/filechute/systemProfileREP3-G5dual.pdf
When did the fan problem start?
After I replaced the mother board on the computer.
Why did I replace the mother board?
Because the experts at apple agreed with my diagnosis that the major crash problems & kernel panics must have some thing to do with a logic board gone bad. They would not work on it, because this Power Mac G5 dual 1.8 GHz machine is now a legacy model.
What I have done to attempt to fix my fan speed problem? yes I checked the obvious things, here is a list:
    1) yes I checked to be sure that the new mother board was the same part number as the original one, and that all things that were unplugged from the old mother board - were actually plugged into the new mother board.
    2) all the fans work, I can see them spinning if I use a flashlight and look at them (cover on and off to get at some of them)
    3) check all RAM to make sure: a) it was installed properly b) that the RAM worked using TechTool Pro c) even started the machine with only the original RAM that came with it.
    4) I installed a Temperature monitor - to see if there was something reading as very hot inside that was causing the machine to continually run the fans at a high speed. No, no heat issues that I can see. Here are the reading from the sensors in degrees fahrenheit, 2009-10-11 16:11:01 -0500
    CPU A Die Temperature: 75.7℉
    CPU B Die Temperature: 81.5℉
    Drive Bay: 68.9℉
Main Logic Board Air Inlet: 64.8℉
    Main Logic Board Ambient: 73.6℉
    Main Logic Board Backside: 76.3℉
    Memory Controller Heatsink: 93.2℉
    Processor Card A Ambient: 77.5℉
    Processor Card B Ambient: 77.0℉
    5) zapped the PRAM
    6) followed the SMU reset instructions for
    Power Mac G5 (Late 2004)
To reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) computer, simply do the following:
    • Turn off the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
    • Remove the power cord from the computer.
    • Wait two minutes.
    • Plug in the power cord.
    • Turn on the computer.
    7) followed the SMU reset instructions:
    Resetting the Cuda/PMU
    How to reset the PMU:
    • If the computer is on, turn it off.
    • Disconnect ALL cables from the computer, including peripherals and power.
    • If possible, move the computer to a place where you are not standing on carpet.
    • Open the case and ground yourself by touching part of the metal frame inside the computer.
    • Find the Cuda or PMU button
    • Press the Cuda or PMU button ONCE. Do not press the button more than once before starting the computer up again.
    • Wait 10 seconds, then reconnect the cables you removed in step 2 and turn the computer on.
    • If the computer still does not respond after resetting the PMU, the computer may require service from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
    8) ran disk utilities, repaired permissions
    9) found a setting in the system preferences that a chat room person suggested had something to do with fan speed. In Energy Saver, under options, processor performance was set to highest, I set it to automatic - this did not change anything that I could tell - BTW I checked my other G5 (a single processor that works fine) that is the setting that that it is set to, and it is nice and quiet.
    10) restarted the machine, ..
    11) found a Fan Control System Update - but it did not install when I tryed to install it -
    12) booted from OSX install disk and ran that disk utility
    13) used OnyX to fix disk permissions, clear caches and temp items
Nope - still have the same high speed fan problem. ... PLEASE HELP!!
I have been reading in the MacInTouch reader reports - found this: some one said to use this - thermal re-calibration using the Apple Authorized Service Providers' disk - but that's not available, at least I can not find it - anyone? have an answer to finding this - or can do it for me? I am in Chicago.

The Genius at the downtown apple store said that because it's a "legacy machine" they would not work on it, .. so should I push them?
Well, I personally think that's ridiculous, I'd Push them, I'd call AppleCare & talk up the chain if need be... there the ones that have or should have that Disc... man o man... Personally I'll never visit an Apple Store again in my lifetime, maybe try an independent AASP if none of that helps!..
    http://tinyurl.com/ykomqkn
Man-o-man, pop my cork before I explode on that one, if I had anything to do with it I'd close that store.

  • PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 Ghz. Want Start PLEASE HELP ME!!!

    HI, all
    I have MacPro G5 Dual 2.5 Ghz. 2004 PCI-X Bus
Yesterday my mac freeze during normal operation in Leopard 10.5.8
When I tried to restart the computer stop after display Apple Logo in the startup.
I have tried all this features:
    1) Start from CD Same.
    2) Reset SMU With Power Switch in the mani Board Same.
    3) Reset Pram In some case the computer freeze and it's doesn't do that, in some other the Pram is reset but the machine still doesn't start.
    4) Replace Pram Battery 3.6 V Same.
    5) Start With Open Firmware (Altcommand+of) When i write "reset-all" The machine Freeze.
    6) Start with Hardware test CD And IT Work Fine, all tests are passed with OK in base and exaust test!!!!!
    7) At last I have replace the video Card, but same freeze at start.
I have tried to swap display using second monitor out And I have seen some strange things:
When I use second display connector the computer still freeze during the startup sequence after the apple logo, but when i shut off computer pressing 10 second the power switch and reconnect the first display connector the machine start normal al all work fine (INCREDIBLE!!)
But when I shutdown the computer the next time i try to power on it freeze in the same way!!!
Just for information if i start in verbose mode (command+v) the machine freeze after "DART Enable"
Please anyone could help me to resolve this issue?
Thank's In Advance and sorry for my bad english.
    Bye

Hi, I have Dual 2.0 GHz machine and it has some of the symptoms yours has. In Open Firmware if I type reset-nvram, set-defaults and then reset-all the computer does freeze, but in my case if I type reset-all without those two the computer resets itself as it is supposed to do.
My computer usually hangs at the apple logo and verbose mode shows DART Enabled as last message, rarely it will not chime at all or will chime but so no picture. If sometimes boots fine and runs without problems for 15 seconds to 3 hours, in my case it seems that if I run the CPU's at maximum settings and put them to constant stress the system is more stable, which I think is odd.
I have replace PRAM battery but that did not change the situation. I will later try to reseat or remove one of the processors altough I don't know if these motherboards are designed to work with processors removed.
I think it is motherboard or CPU -issue.

    Hello,
G5s require SATA 1.5 Gb/s, some SATA2 or SATA3 drives are SATA1 compliant & step down, others do not, still others will if there's a true SATA1 Drive in slot 0.

  • Flash 8 Pro freezes on Mac G5, dual 2,5 GHz

  • Power Mac G5, Dual 2.5 GHz wont' boot

My Power Mac Tower, with Dual 2.5 GHz processors was off. When I push the start button, the white light flashes, the fan turns on then immediately shuts off. I suspect it is the power supply, is there any way to verify that it is the Power Supply before Igo buy another one.

I would try things in the following first......
Have you ever changed the PRAM battery? Your Mac is at the age where it may be depleted.
I would check it first. When mine went, I had no response from my Mac at all; just a light on my power button; absolutely no boot at all.
For G4's and earlier models, check out things in Texas Mac Man's Battery, PRAM, PMU tutorial on the subject. Most of his tips pertain to a G5 also.
G5 Tower users check Apple KB article HT2580 on DIY (Do It Yourself) Instructions. Click on the PDF for Battery.
Here is the late G5 SMU reset.
Early G5's use a PMU reset and the battery shown in the tutorial. The battery for late G5 (2005) + G5 iMacs and earlier iMacs, Mac Minis and Intel Tower Macs is this one.

  • How to migrate from G5 dual 1.6 to GT5 dual 1.8 GHz

The processor in my dual 1.6 GHz G5 failed. Rather than pay $1200 for a new processor, I bought a used dual 1.8 GHz G5 for $1100. Desperate to get up and running quickly, I pulled the drive on the new machine, which has Mac OSX 10.5, and replaced it with the 10.4.11 drive from my old machine.
It's working, but performance is slow and shutdown takes 5-10 minutes. The new machine has no bluetooth or airport, and I suspect that I haven't completely disabled the daemons, etc., that are looking for these features.
The only installation disks I have are for Mac OSX 10.3, and the Apple store doesn't sell 10.4 anymore. I do not want to upgrade to 10.5 for various legacy reasons.
Any ideas on how to tune this system? I already repaired disk permissions, ran the utilities available with Onyx, etc.

You should have enough room to keep both drives in that tower. This would allow you to boot from either drive, in case you wanted to try 10.5 and keep 10.4, or just make a copy of the entire 10.4 drive so that you don't risk losing anything before you proceed with any reinstalls.
The on-line Apple store might not have Tiger any more, but you may have luck if you call them in person. They may offer it if you ask...not sure what the latest report on Tiger availability is by phone. Another alternative is to ask for the system discs that came with the computer, depending on what OS version it shipped with, they may ask for the serial number of the computer (don't post that number here, just have it handy when you call the Apple store) Not sure what the $ for each option would be.
