Networking troubles with windows machine

I've got this setup: arch linux machine with eth0 connected to dsl modem and eth1 connected to a win7 machine. the linux machine has a samba share on it which i can't really access on the win7 machine. i can access it, but i can't open anything which is strange because other machines on the network can access stuff just fine. another problem is that the win7 machine can't access the internet, it has network access, just not interent. i'm new to this whole thing so please help me.

Ok, it might help if you explain your setup a bit more. How are the other computers that can connect to the share connected? are they win7 or linux comps?
I tried win7 in a vm once and when the memory hit 700mB and I was nowhere near seeing a desktop I killed the vm. So someone else will have to chime in here. Best of luck

  • Networking troubles with ABIT BP6 board and Solaris 8

Hi, Im trying to install the Solaris 8 software on my ABIT BP6 board with a Compaq NetFlex3 10TX NIC. This is a SMP board (dual celeron) but is not on the HCL (the NIC is).
The installation gives no problems at all (except for a memory conflict between memory devices), and SunOS works pretty well except for networking... using ifconfig -a shows me the networking interface and the loopback interface but I can't ping outside of the Solaris machine (or ping to the Solaris machine from an other machine).
I know that the board is not on the HCL but I had no networking troubles with Solaris 8 early access.
After instalation of the software and the reboot, I get the status as below:
    >
    configuring IPv4 interfaces: cnft0.
    Hostname: MILLIWAYS
    Configuring /dev and /devices
Configuring the /dev directory (compatibility devices)
The system is coming up. Please wait.

    /dev/rdsk/c0d0s7: is clean.
    All devices are configured...
    Configuring network interface addresses: cnft0.

    Starting IPv4 routing deamon.
    starting rpc services: rpcbind done.
Setting netmask of cnft0 to 255.255.255.0

As you can see I get a time out while configuring the NIC. I tried a lot of different things (and some bad ones like using the device driver disk of the EA version with the cd's of the final version but no luck there...)
Anyone with the same problems or any help?
    Thanx, Marcel

    Hi maeck,
I'm sorry that my message is off the topic. Could you help me with a problem that I have with Abit BP6 + Solaris 8 combo?
I'm encountering error message on console screen during booting/reboot/shutting down like "APIC error interrupt on CPU 0. Status=2" where CPU can be 0 or 1, status can be 0, 2, 4 or 6.
If I let my dual Celeron400 run at 400MHz, the frequency of errors is few and far between. Though it still happens. If I overclock them to 558MHz like I udually do, it will show at least 4 times during a booting process. I've tried MPS 1.1 and 1.4 settings. I've also tried turning off all cache, delayed transaction, passive release settings.
In addition, the overclocked system tends to lock up while it runs flawless in Windows 2000 Professional and Redhat 6.1. Do you have any similar experience?

  • Using network drive with time machine.  IS IT POSSIBLE?

There are lots of discussion on using network drives with time machine. I have not been able to make them work. Could somebody tell me if this is possible

Time Machine does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or USB drives connected to an Airport Extreme, or a drive on a Mac running Leopard.
    Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
You may find some "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.
If you still think this is a good idea, do yourself a favor before you bet your backups on it: be sure it really works, at least for now:
    1. Get a copy of CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! or the like, and make a full bootable clone of your internal HD, on an external disk. Test it by booting from it. Then reboot from your internal HD.
    2. Let TM do it's first, full, initial backup.
    3. Attempt a full system restore (like you'll need when, not if, your internal HD fails), via the instructions in item 14 of the of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.
Again, even if it works today, tomorrow is another day . . .

  • Trouble with Time Machine (runs constantly). Erase and install?

Trouble with Time Machine (runs constantly). Tried re-installation (equivalent of archive install) of Snow Leopard. Time Machine still unable to complete a back-up. Erase and install recommended at Genius Bar. Have backed up data to external HD using Super Duper. Should be a bootable backup. Last successful backup through Time Machine was 6/1/11. Not sure if I can access this back-up if I erase and re-install.
Computer shipped with Tiger (7/2007). Have original disks. Now running Snow Leopard. So: erase HD, install Tiger, then update to Snow Leopard? Start-up from Tiger disks does not appear to work (starting up holding "C" key). Suggestions? Want very much to transfer data to new iMac, but do not want to carry bugs forward. Very nervous about erasing HD. And have the questions above about reinstalling system software.
    Advice desired! Thanks.

Well if you can hold option and boot off the Superdupes clone and it works fine then you should be set to do what you need to do to the original boot drive.
Disconnect all drives and c boot off the Snow Leopard install disk, use Disk Utility to Erase > format HFS+ journaled your internal boot drive.
Quit and reinstall OS X Snow Leopard, setup (do not use Setup/Migration Assitant!) and update to 10.6.8
When you setup the new install, use the same hard drive name and user name as you did before.
Now the free iLife that came on the Tiger disks you won't get naturally, but you can pick them off the disk with the shareware program called Pacifist.
install your programs from fresh sources, this way you don't get the "crap" from the older setup.
Once your machine is up and going. Hook up the clone and transfer your user folders over manually. With iTunes just replace the whole folder. Because you kept the same user and boot drive name as before, the playlists should be fine.
Once your all peachy, take the opportunity to clone this new setup to a external drive, label and disconnect.
Make another clone for day to day, or week to week clone updates and your just a hold option boot away for recovery.
You know Superdupes and Carbon Copy Cloner both have auto-scedualing/updating ability, so you can leave them plugged in and it will perform a update so your clone stays fresh and recent.
But you should keep a clone timed back about a couple of weeks back just in case you install something bad and don't learn about it right away.

  • Trouble with Time Machine/Time Capsule try Backup instead

Trouble with Time Machine preparing to download taking hogging your system followed by errors that don't make any sense even if you look at the console logs to try to figure out. Try Backup instead.
    Find the software here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/backup312.html
It allows you to configure when to do back ups and specific data you want, and includes templates for configurations to make it easy. The only catch is you loose the Time Machine benefits of restoring an individual file easily. For me it gets around the issues w/ Time Machine hogging my system resources (Finder at 98% CPU cycles both cores) while "preparing backup", followed by strange failures that can't figure out, followed by more "preparing backup".

I was running backup instead of time machine until I saw snow leopard had time machine improvements. I'm very happy with the performance so far w/ snow leopard (OS X 10.6) time machine performance.

I am having trouble with Time Machine. I keep getting several messages:  1.  Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Mona's I MAC"   2.  You haven't selected a location for Time Machine Backups.
When I try to select a location there is nothing there to select and the time machine will not stay on.  I have an external back up "my passport" by WD.  Could this be full?
    Need help.

  • Networking with windows machines

I recently bought my MacBook and one for my wife. My only problem at the moment is that I cannot figure out how to "see" or find the windows computers on my office network.
Here in my main office I have an Airport express, where I've connected my laser printer. I've installed Bonjour on the Windows machines and all of us print fine. Obviously I connect fine to the internet through this connection. But nobody can find how to put files in my drop box, nor can I find how to put anything on theirs. In all there are about 12 Windows machines connected to the Express, a few wireless, but most wired through a switch with fixed IP's. Most are windows XP. 4 are Vista.
At home I connect fine through my time machine to my wife's Mac Air.

can you confirm what IP address your mac has in the network preferences.
Then goto a pc and check what ip address that has click on start, run, cmd press enter, in the dos window type ipconfig press enter
This will display the IP of the pc
the ip addresses should be on the same subnet eg they both start wit 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x etc
If that is the case then you are indeed on the same LAN.
Then try manually connecting to a pc, from the finder press command + K then enter the pc servers address eg
    smb://192.x.x.x

  • Home networking with Windows machines

I just purchased a backup drive Clickfree Wireless automatic backup - see http://www.clickfree.com/products_c3.php#
I want to leave it plugged into my Mac, and have it back up my Mac and laptops (I have an iMac and 2 Laptops... one running Vista, one running Windows7). To do that I need to network the computers. They are all connected to the same wireless router. I can get the laptops to see each other, but can't consistently get them to see the iMac. A couple times they did, but mostly it doesn't show up. Once I was able to access the iMac from the Windows7, but the Vista machine tells me the username is wrong.
I found thishttp://support.apple.com/kb/ht1549 and followed those instructions. One thing: after going to the Advanced Network Settings and setting up the WINS workgroup (I add the workgroup name in the dropdown list), then Apply... if I later go back into that screen, it's not showing up. It's like I never entered it.
I think I'm rambling... can someone tell me... in just the simplest terms possible... what I need to do on the iMac to get my Windows machines to see it... or if I need to do something to my Windows machines?
And don't say I should have bought MacBook... I know
    I'm running 10.5.8
    Thanks

Any ideas?  Anybody else have an issue like this?

  • Unreliable Network Connection with Windows

    Hi,
I am using a Macbook Pro with Mac OSX Mavericks.
I have shared a few folders on my Macbook over the network so they can be accessed by another computer running Windows 7 Pro. The Macbook is connected to my home network using an ethernet cable via a hub.
I am unable to reliably copy *any* files from Windows to my Macbook.
Any attempt to copy a folder containing more than a few hundred files invariably results in the Macbook's network folder becoming disconnected (and therefore unreadable) briefly, cancelling the whole operation.
This was always pretty unreliable on Mac OSX Mountain Lion, but has since become even worse since I upgraded to Mavericks.
Does anyone else have this problem? How do you reliably share files over your network?

    Home Edition or Home Premium?
The Apple SETUP drivers on your OEM DVD (Boot Camp 3.0.x) should enable network and seems that is fine.
The only AV you need, and you do need, is MS Security Essentials. I wouldn't bother with anything else, or any free or commercial suite or firewall.
PCs have had trouble too, with lost connections after resuming from sleep.
    Is this wired or wireless?
How about the modem, router, etc. setup and configurations?
Uninstall the device driver and let Windows install its own.
You can always use Device Manager to "rollback" a driver; you have more options and flexible with Windows in that regard than OS X ever had, so you can test and try out different driver. Just look for current network adapter driver. And no, I'd think there is Windows 7 or Windows Vista/7 bundle (installer or zip package).
And if it is the BASIC Windows 7 then I'd also consider upgrade to Home Premium.

Is this still true or are there updated drivers for windows 8.1 now?

  • Networking issues with Windows SBS Server 2003

I have 3 G5 running on a recently installed 10.4.8, they were all previously running 10.3.9. They all connect to a network drive with folders that have color labels on them (only 2 blue and green). In 10.3.9 the labels were fine, now when the machine connects to the server the labels do not refresh utill you have been throught them and selected them all. I have tried delabeling and then relabeling them in 10.4 but it does not help. I have also tried it on another site and it does exactly the same. It also does not seem to matter what protcol you use to connect to the server (AFP, SMB, TCP/IP).
Anyone come across this before and know any fixes?

I dont really have much to offer here except that we use afp with our SBS server and this hasnt come up... on any of our 10.4.x machines.

  • Network Error with Windows 7

    Hi,
Has anyone come across following error?
I had a ThinkPad X201 with Windows 7 get this error after it has been updated with Windows Patches. Was fine before the patches.
Also found error when trying with Net Use command.

    Hello,
I am guessing there was a network share listed in the screen image that was edited out, correct?
First, try running the FixIt program from Microsoft Knowledgebase Article #910336, "You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download an update from Windows Upda...".
If that does not solve the problem, try deleting the network share on the computer, then recreating it using 'Advanced Sharing'.  Does that make any difference?

  • OWC Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive - Share with Windows Machine?

    Hi,
Others on this discussion have recommended the OWC Mercury Elite Pro External Hard Drive. Dumb question: my live-in girlfriend has a Dell XP laptop, and I have a MacBook. If we purchased an OWC hard drive with both firewire and USB, can we both use the external hard drive?
    Thanks, David

You can certainly use their drives between a Mac and a PC. As mentioned, either format it FAT32 witht he 4GB file size restrictions or partition it.
You can also use a program called MacDrive. It give a Windows machine that ability to read and wtite to HFS+ partitions. I have used it and it works nicely.
There is a timed demo, so you can try it out and see if it meets your needs.

  • Im using a network drive with time machine and im getting error 45. Time machine will not work now. Why?

I bought a seagate goflex home 2TB network drive. It worked with time machine for a couple of weeks than now it wont. It just says ERROR 45 now and will not back up. Why?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
According to several related Time Machine Error 45 threads in these forums, Time Machine is not well suited to backups on most non-Apple network drives.
