Networking troubles

I have a Thinkpad 390x, and I'm having trouble getting it connected to the internet so I can download xfce through pacman. I've tried changing some settings in rc.conf (changed it to dhcp, and also changed my gateway). There is an ethernet port on the laptop.

I don't have a rc.txt

  • Networking troubles with ABIT BP6 board and Solaris 8

    Hi, Im trying to install the Solaris 8 software on my ABIT BP6 board with a Compaq NetFlex3 10TX NIC. This is a SMP board (dual celeron) but is not on the HCL (the NIC is).
    The installation gives no problems at all (except for a memory conflict between memory devices), and SunOS works pretty well except for networking... using ifconfig -a shows me the networking interface and the loopback interface but I can't ping outside of the Solaris machine (or ping to the Solaris machine from an other machine).
    I know that the board is not on the HCL but I had no networking troubles with Solaris 8 early access.
    After instalation of the software and the reboot, I get the status as below:
    >
    configuring IPv4 interfaces: cnft0.
    Hostname: MILLIWAYS
    Configuring /dev and /devices
    Configuring the /dev directory (compatibility devices)
    The system is coming up. Please wait.
    checking ufs filesystems
    /dev/rdsk/c0d0s7: is clean.
    All devices are configured...
    Configuring network interface addresses: cnft0.
    RPC: Timed out
    Starting IPv4 routing deamon.
    starting rpc services: rpcbind done.
    Setting netmask of cnft0 to 255.255.255.0
    <
    As you can see I get a time out while configuring the NIC. I tried a lot of different things (and some bad ones like using the device driver disk of the EA version with the cd's of the final version but no luck there...)
    Anyone with the same problems or any help?
    Thanx, Marcel

    Hi maeck,
    I'm sorry that my message is off the topic. Could you help me with a problem that I have with Abit BP6 + Solaris 8 combo?
    I'm encountering error message on console screen during booting/reboot/shutting down like "APIC error interrupt on CPU 0. Status=2" where CPU can be 0 or 1, status can be 0, 2, 4 or 6.
    If I let my dual Celeron400 run at 400MHz, the frequency of errors is few and far between. Though it still happens. If I overclock them to 558MHz like I udually do, it will show at least 4 times during a booting process. I've tried MPS 1.1 and 1.4 settings. I've also tried turning off all cache, delayed transaction, passive release settings.
    In addition, the overclocked system tends to lock up while it runs flawless in Windows 2000 Professional and Redhat 6.1. Do you have any similar experience?
    My system config:

    400 MHz CPU X 2
    GlobalWin FEP32 X 2

  • [Kernel] USB and network trouble

    Hey all, i have some trouble getting my system fully running.
    I have a built in 3com network card, it uses the 3c59x module in the kernel (got it build into the kernel). I also have a usb cd writer. When i start writing my network fails after sometime. I came from vectorlinux to arch. In VL it worked without a prob. Here check my dmesg output. The most interesting is at the end.

    When my network is down, the onlything to restore is is rebooting my computer. Restarting the network daemon does not work. Currently i don't have hotplug running, but with hotplug i encounter the same problem.
    I hope anybody can help me.
    Greetinx Atze

    It looks like the problem is with ACPI or you have a hardware IRQ conflict..
    check for a bios update for your Motherboard and check the bios settings.
    It might also help if you moved network card to another pci-slot.

  • Home wireless network trouble

    I got a new wireless router, Netgear WPN824 from Newegg, a refurbished product. I set up a home wireless network using the online manual on the Netgear website. The router works well for the wired setup. But I could not connect to wireless.
    My wireless network shows up on the list of available wireless networks. I can connect to other wireless networks such as that of my neighbour's. I tried connecting to my network using both unsecured and secure WEP / WPA modes. Except once, I could never connect. That one time, as soon as I could connect and verify that I was indeed connected I thought the problem was resolved and so shutdown my system to see if i could connect again - alas, same trouble again. I use NetworkManager to connect, and here's the output for two networks - jaydoc which is my home network, and linksys, that of my neighbour's to which i can always connect.

    Is the wireless router i got a dud, being refurbished i took my chances and maybe i wasn't so lucky..! Or is it something wrong in my network settings..? I tried shutting down everything and then turning the modem, then the router and finally the PC without the ethernet cable connected. Still I am unable to connect.
    Any help is deeply appreciated. I am a total newbie in networking...!

    So if its still a DHCP problem, it seems to be affecting only the wireless part. How can I make wireless use the same DHCP servers as the wired..? Or is there something else wrong here..?

  • DHCP networking troubles

    SO, I have configured my XServe to offer DHCP services to clients connected to the secondary (Apple supplied) ethernet card (en1). If I connect to the card directly or through a switch, I can pull down an IP address and browse the network and internet with no troubles.
    My problems come in when I try to add my Cisco WAP4400N to the equation for wireless networking. I used the Gateway Setup Assistant to configure my internet sharing and DHCP on the XServe, so my internal network is 192.168.1.2-192.168.1.127 (.128-.255 are reserved for VPN services). I have the 4400N manually configured at 192.168.1.3, subnet 255.255.255.0, router and DNS set to 192.168.1.1 (the address assigned to en1 by the assistant). I can connect to the wifi network and clients show up in the DHCP clients browser, and I can browse the network and even VNC into the server to control it. I cannot, however, access the internet in this configuration.
    On a whim, I hooked the 4400N directly to my modem/router, and when I do that, I can browse the internet just fine, so something is wrong with my OS X Server configuration, I just don't know where to start to diagnose this issue. Again, I can browse the internet fine when hooked with a wire to the server directly or through a switch, just not over the wifi.
    Incidentally, to clarify, I have disabled the server side firewall as a temporary measure to ensure this is not the source of the conflict.

    Figured it out! Re-enabled Firewall, set to 'Allow all traffic from 'any'', bingo, works like a charm!

  • Edge Network troubles.......

    I am having trouble getting data transfer using Edge. Wi-fi there are no problems but when I try to bring up a webpage for example I get the cant find server error. When I try to update weather, it says update failed. When I try to refresh my Yahoo email it gives me the famous, "Connection to server failed (imap.mail.yahoo.com)".
    Is there something wrong with the network because I can still text and make calls???? any thoughts?

    ATT seems to have modified their network. I have ATT dsl as my internet provider with a swbell account. Over the past few weeks I have been getting similar connection failed messages. I called ATT dsl and they helped me reset all my pop and smtp strings. I then put these strings in the iPhone and everything worked again. Of note, they only helped me with my computer and said that I would have to call Apple for the phone. If your internet service provider is not ATT, I believe you should start with them. Ask about SSL ports. Apparently, ATT now requires a password for smtp. Best of luck
    By the way, my pop is pop.att.yahoo.com with a port of 995 and my smtp is smtp.att.yahoo.com with a port of 465. SSL is checked for both and password used

  • Networking trouble

    Hi,
       I'm having a very odd situation on now. I have 4 Thinkpad who refuses to connect on any network. I've try with a lan cable, wifi and even with 3G connection, no connections possible. All 4 laptops are using windows 7 as OS. I have other SL thinkpad with windows XP and they don't have that problem. I've lost one laptop per day since Monday with that problem.
      At this point, I've reinstalled the network drivers. Didn't solve the problem. I've uninstalled various patches with the same result. Finally, a system restore did the trick. I'm able to access networks without any problems now.
      Is it bad luck that all 4 computers network interface stop working or, like I'm suspecting, it's a patch that causing me this trouble?
      According to Lenovo technical support, I appear to be the only one in this situation, which I doubt. If anybody has the same problem, can you help me identify which drivers, patches or piece of software that causes that?
    Thank you for your help,
    Fred

    It could also be that the server is closing the
    socket :)Nops, it was the client, as you had originally thought.
    What happens is that, the client on EOF, sends an empty String and closes connection.
    else{
         fileH="";
         closeConnection();
    }The server always reads the Object and sends it back. When it receives an empty String, it attempts to write back, but by then, the client has closed the connection.
    do{
         try{
              message = (String) input.readObject();
              output.writeObject(message);
                                               the line above should have been as below
                                               if(!(message.equals("")))
                                                           output.writeObject(message);
         catch(Exception e){
              System.out.println(e.toString());
    }while(!message.equals("")); Also the OP's comment
    the input object in the client is hooked up to a text file that reads in data, sends >it to the server.is somewhat misleading in the absence of the entire code. The input object, is hooked to the server's o/p object, me thinks.
    The reader object is what reads text file data.
    This, however, does not affect his program. He simply outs the server's msg on to the console.

  • Toshiba L840 - Network Troubles.

    Hi guys, I have bought a new Toshiba L840 for Christmas and everything is perfect besides the Wi-Fi. My old laptop had old hardware so I needed to upgrade. However, that old laptop had fast stable internet which was connected to the same Wi-Fi as my new Toshiba. The old laptop had no troubles loading pages and the Signal strength was at Constant Good - Excellent. Now, with my New purchased Toshiba, the Signal strength is stuck on 1 or 2 bars and always disconnects. The network card is at its latest version and its an Aetheros.
    Do I have to tamper with some advanced settings in order to get this fixed i.e. Device Manager network card propeties?? PLEASE HELP. Thanks in advance.

    Can you check the laptop's full model and part numbers from the label on the bottom? Don't include the serial number.

  • Network Trouble - eth0 not interface for sis900 controller

    I'm not sure how to even state this problem, but I have gone through the guides a couple of times to try and find what I missed or some more enlightening information.  Currently, I get nothing if I ping google, or anything else for that matter.
    Here's what I have,
    useful stuff from my rc.conf file:
    # HARDWARE
    # MOD_AUTOLOAD: Allow autoloading of modules at boot and when needed
    # MOD_BLACKLIST: Prevent udev from loading these modules
    # MODULES: Modules to load at boot-up. Prefix with a ! to blacklist.
    # NOTE: Use of 'MOD_BLACKLIST' is deprecated. Please use ! in the MODULES array.
    MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
    #MOD_BLACKLIST=() #deprecated
    MODULES=(sis900 !snd_pcsp !pcspkr)
    # Scan for LVM volume groups at startup, required if you use LVM
    USELVM="no"
    # NETWORKING
    # HOSTNAME: Hostname of machine. Should also be put in /etc/hosts
    HOSTNAME="archPC"
    # Use 'ifconfig -a' or 'ls /sys/class/net/' to see all available interfaces.
    # Interfaces to start at boot-up (in this order)
    # Declare each interface then list in INTERFACES
    # - prefix an entry in INTERFACES with a ! to disable it
    # - no hyphens in your interface names - Bash doesn't like it
    # DHCP: Set your interface to "dhcp" (eth0="dhcp")
    # Wireless: See network profiles below
    #Static IP example
    #eth0="eth0 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255"
    eth0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(eth0)
    # Routes to start at boot-up (in this order)
    # Declare each route then list in ROUTES
    # - prefix an entry in ROUTES with a ! to disable it
    gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
    # Enable these network profiles at boot-up. These are only useful
    # if you happen to need multiple network configurations (ie, laptop users)
    # - set to 'menu' to present a menu during boot-up (dialog package required)
    # - prefix an entry with a ! to disable it
    # Network profiles are found in /etc/network.d
    # This now requires the netcfg package

    # - prefix a daemon with a ! to disable it
    # - prefix a daemon with a @ to start it up in the background

    I'm sorry, I don't understand the issue.
    from syslog:  eth0: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet at 0xd400, IRQ 11, 00:0a:e6:1f:fd:1e
    from ifconfig: eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:0A:E6:1F:FD:1E
    The mac addresses all match  eth0 is the sis 9000.  And, lspci tells us the sis900 kernel module is loaded
    Is the issue that you don't have an IP address?  We can fix that (I think )

  • Network trouble assigning static IP, dhcpcd works but not static.

    I've tried static IP in rc.conf and assigning it manually.  When I assign it manually, and my gateway route, it shows up with static but doesn't talk on network.  Then I do a dhcpcd to the same NIC and viola, it gets assigned an IP on subnet I was specifying manually, only now it's talking once dhcpcd has been run.  However, it still doesn't see  (cannot ping) other IPs on my local network, only the internet!.
    My local office network is DSL hooked up to a SonicWall gateway then a MS SBS 2011 server acting as local DNS and DC.  After trying every configuration and command I can find here in these forums, I can only get on the network using dhcpcd.  Also, on only a couple occasions I was able to ping the server by IP, but still can't get resolution from the local DNS.  I don't think it's because of my local network config, I have a solaris box that joins my local net and can ping any and everything on it as well as use the local DNS.
    Questions:
    1. Why does static IP assignment not work.  I've tried in rc.conf as well as "ip addr" and "ip route" commands, and made sure resolv.conf is good..  Only dhcpcd gets me connected.
    2. Why do I not get service from my local private network's DNS once dhcpcd gets me on the network?
    3. And why can I not ping other IP's on my local network once dhcpcd get's me connected.

    Okay, somewhere in there, you plugged a cable into eth0 and it acquired a private network address in the 10.xx.xx.xx space.
    Can you verify you are assigning a static address to eth0 of 192.168.168.37 ?  That is an unusual address. Are you sure you are on the correct subnet?
    What was the output of ip route when you thought you should have been able to hit the net?
    What is the gateway address for eth0 ?
    Can you describe the network attached to eth0?  (It seems to be a 10.xx.xx.xx private address)
    Can you describe the network attached to eth3?  (Is it a local router ? )

  • Small Network Trouble

    I am currently trying to setup a small network at my Mothers work and I have ran into a small problem. Here is the situation: I have ten iMac G4 that I have networked together using a NetGear switch. I now need to get internet to these ten computers. The hard part about this is I need the switch to get the internet from an AirPort Extreme in here office and the switch is located down the hallway in another room. I don't have the option of running a sing CAT5 cable from the Base Station to the switch it needs to be done wirelessly. I will include a link to twitpic (http://twitpic.com/1x1xsz) where I have uploaded a diagram that I drew to give you a visualization of my problem.
    Any and all suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks

    Welcome to the discussions!
    You might want to explore all the options.
    You could use wireless and setup an AirPort Express to "join" the wireless network that the Airport Extreme creates, then enable the ethernet port on the device to feed the switch.
    While this should work most of the time, you would be trusting an entire network to a single wireless connection. I would think long and hard about this and use this only if there were no other alternatives.
    You could also use a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to transmit the ethernet signal over the AC powerline. Just run an ethernet cable from the AirPort Extreme to an adapter and plug it in the wall. Plug the other adapter in the wall and then run and ethernet cable from the adapter to the switch.
    Works great. Faster and more reliable than wireless by far. Newer powerline equipment is almost up to Gigabit speeds...almost as good as running an ethernet cable.
    Just make sure that everything is on the same master electrical circuit.
    Whichever you decide upon, it would also be a good idea to have a full understanding of the store's return policy in case things don't work out as hoped. Sometimes, it really is worth the extra expense to have the security of a traditional ethernet connection.

  • Networking troubles with windows machine

    I've got this setup: arch linux machine with eth0 connected to dsl modem and eth1 connected to a win7 machine. the linux machine has a samba share on it which i can't really access on the win7 machine. i can access it, but i can't open anything which is strange because other machines on the network can access stuff just fine. another problem is that the win7 machine can't access the internet, it has network access, just not interent. i'm new to this whole thing so please help me.

    Ok, it might help if you explain your setup a bit more. How are the other computers that can connect to the share connected? are they win7 or linux comps?
    I tried win7 in a vm once and when the memory hit 700mB and I was nowhere near seeing a desktop I killed the vm. So someone else will have to chime in here. Best of luck

    When I try to connect to any computers on our network via the command-k function, my computer locks up. I try to browse for computer or try to connect directly to a computer via afp and the same thing happens. I get the login screen and the select volume to mount screen ok. When I select a volume to mount and hit ok, I get the spinning beachball and it will not recover with out a restart. I have tried to connect to several computers and the same isssue happens.

    delete your Network .plist files (any with "network" and ".plist")
    empty the trash
    restarte
    repair permissions (Disk Utility)
    re-configure your network preferences

    When I have both of my laptops wireless networked with the new printer, I have an issue where the internet for both laptops gets "hung" any time I use it.
    When I uninstall one of them, the other works fine.

    Tell me about your network - router brand/model, encryption type (WEP, WPA, etc) and ISP type (DSL, Cable, etc).

  • Network Troubles!

    I just recently bought my phone a few weeks ago, and i like it a lot. Im having a network issue though. Since i bought it, where i live is roaming, and i was told that i would be able to acess data from that area, but i see no icon displaying im connected to the network and im not able to access facebook or web or anything. Can someone please help me fix this problem, i would appreciate it greatly

    I dont know where in WI you are but if you are in the new Element Mobile area (they took over Alltel in a smaill 6 or 7 county area) my understanding is they can roam off of VZW, but VZW is not allowed to do the same off of them.
    Here are the counties.
