Networking via USB

Hi... I want to network two iMacs, one w/ 10.5.5, the other w/ 10.4.9. Also I want to do the same w/ two Epson printers. I have TWO Belkin USB hubs, one connected to each printer. How do I 'tie in' the two hubs so both computers will see both printers?
The iMacs are currently connected using an ethernet hub for DSL modem.
Any help will be appreciated! Thank, Jack

Hi Jack;
You don't want to connect two computers to a printer via USB. If you do the data going to the printer from the two computers will get interspersed with each other. Instead if you connect the printer with a single computer and then share, the operating system on the computer sharing the printer will ensure that the data doesn't get interspersed. USB is not intelligent enough to do that.

  • Printing to the network via USB Ethernet

I have a pair of MacBook Air's that are using the USB Ethernet adapter to connect to the local ethernet (wireless is not an option, all workstations must be wired while in-house.)
The problem I run into is that both of these MBA's will loose their connectivity to the printers, or their ability to see bonjour devices at all, or Appletalk devices. In particular, I've installed a set of OkiData printers on the network which support both Bonjour & Appletalk. When I setup the printers as IP printers, they seem to work fine. However, if they, or any other printer, is connected as a Bonjour device, eventually the MBA stops recognizing/seeing/looking up Bonjour items on the network.
Any thoughts on why this is or how to correct it would be really useful, especially since some day the users might like to do some bonjour-based file sharing.
    Thanks!

I have a client with the exact same problem. No bonjour when attached via USB ethernet (Apple's own) SOMETIMES. However, I've noticed that if she unplugs and tries the other usb slot, it seems to work (immediately, no reboot). I've actually only told her to do this over the phone, but it has worked at least twice.
One problem here is that the printers are NOT accessible via bonjour over WLAN, since the WLAN is at least 2 different C class networks.
The other is that due to the setup of the printers and crap drivers from Ricoh, using personalized printer queues only works over Bonjour and not TCP. Thus, only USB ethernet can be used for printing. It would be very interesting to hear if changing usb ports might help in your case as well. This particular client has a late 2010 MBA 4G/128G, but at the same department there are at least 7 MBAs where no-one has had the same problem. Either that, or they had it but never told me.

  • Problems sharing media across network via USB of E4200

Wasn't sure where to post this.... I have been using the e4200 for about a week.  So far, so good!  However, a primary reason I purch it was the ability to share via USB across my network (Files and such).  Read the approved USB drives that r compatible and although my specfic drive was not listed (WD, my Passport) I connected it to the e4200 and set a folder called "movies"to share.  In this folder I have both bluray rips (25-32GB) and standard rips (5gb or less).  Regardless of source, the content was not playable.  It buffered like crazy.  So, is it as simple as using an approved USB drive and I will be able to share appropriately?
The same folder plays great when connected directly to one of my media streamers USB drive, so don't think the drive/source is bad.
    Thank you!

What is the capacity of the your WD HDD? The maximum HDD capacity supported by E4200 is 3TB. What is the hardware version of the device, also please mention the current firmware version of E4200.
You have mentioned that the media is not playable. Does it not play at all or it takes time to buffer and then play?

Please don't shout!   Using all uppercase means shouting on the internet.  If your keyboard is stuck please say so, otherwise people will think you are being obnoxious.
Now the first question is, when you are saying connecting to personal hotspot, have you always been using the iPhone to connect to the internet?   Are you someplace where the only place to connect is available via tethering to the iPhone's celluar network?  Or do you have other options?

  • I am trying to connect a Windows 7 / 64 bit to an Epson printer on my Mac.  The printer is hooked into the Mac via USB; the Mac is networked to a Linksys wireless router with an ethernet cable, as is the Windows box. Any tips on how to do this?

I am trying to connect a Windows 7 / 64 bit to an Epson printer on my Mac.  The printer is hooked into the Mac via USB; the Mac is networked to a Linksys wireless router with an ethernet cable, as is the Windows box. I installed the current Bonjour printer services software on the Windows machine, and separately installed the driver software for the Epson printer on the WIndows machine.  Running the bonjour wizard, I get an alert saying 'I don't have sufficient access to my computer to connect to the selected printer'.
The printer has 'sharing' turned on from the Mac end; this works with a Powerbook via the wireless connection.  Sharing is also turned on in the Windows printer control panel for this printer (under properties).  The Mac is a G5 running 10.5.8.  When I try to print a page from the Windows machine it gets hung in the print queue.
Any advice how to proceed would be appreciated!

  • How can I share external devices connected to my Mac mini via USB on a wired network.

Own a Mac mini with Mountain Lion.  Purchased the server app.  The Mac mini is connected to a wired network with Mac’s and Windows machines.  I have an external hard drive and 2 printers connected to the MAC mini via USB.  I would like to share these devices with other computers on the wired network. Although I have attached similar devices with an airport extreme in the past, I am unable to use a wireless router in this case.  Any suggestions on making this work with my current setup?

You don't really even need server app to do this. Simply go to System Preferences | Sharing and turn on both File & Printer sharing. Then, for example, the printer (not relevant what connection it has but obviously USB is fine) will be available to everyone on the wired network.
That's all there is to it - unless I missed/misunderstood something re: your setup which seems very straightforward.

  • Can I network a Mac and a PC to my Deskjet 3050 via USB?

I have a PC, and have connected my HP Deskjet 3050 to it via USB.  I now have a Mac, too, and would like to connect it to the printer.  Can I network both to the 3050, via USB?
    PC runs Windows 7.
    Mac runs Mountain Lion.
    Printer is HP 3050 J610.

  • Can print via usb, but not via wireless network

My new MacBook Pro prints to my Epson RX500 when the printer is connected via USB to the MBP. However, when the the printer is connected by USB to my desktop PC running XP, the MBP does not print to it. I can see disks and transfer files wirelessly among desktop PC, laptop PC & MBP. The MBP finds the RX500 on the network, and has a driver for it. I can set it as the Mac's default printer. When I print, say from OpenOffice or TextEdit, the dialogs seem ok. Sometimes I see the print queue icon wink in and out on the dock. But the document doesn't get printed. The desktop says the printer is shared, and I can print over the wireless network from my PC laptop running XP.
One of the Apple troubleshooting pages suggests that I should have the same driver version on my XP desktop and my Snow Leopard MBP. I don't know how to tell what version the PC is running.
    Any suggestions?

Just to be sure - you know that you can't use Epson's "USB-only" driver for printing to a Windows-shared printer?
You must use the Gutenprint driver - that's why Apple included the Gutenprint drivers in OS X.
    Updates for Gutenprint:

  • My Epson XP - 400 will not print wirelessly or via USB. The documents just sits in the print queue while the computer is "searching for the printer".  I set up the printer on the computer and it is connected to the wireless network.

I'm unable to print wirelessly or connected via USB with my Epson XP-400. The computer continues to say it's searching for the printer even though the printer is set up on the computer, the printer is connected to the wireless network and the USB is plugged into the computer.

Try resetting your Mac's printing system as shown here:

  • Using N95 as a Modem Via USB on O2UK Network

Hi I am trying to connect to the internet with my laptop using the N95 as a modem via USB. I have tried a couple of different ways to do this. I've tried using the one touch access in Nokia PC suite and it gets up to the part where it says "verifying username and password" then says unable to establish a connection. I have also tried connecting from the "connect to" tab in the start menu on xp (also tried vista) and selecting my mobile as the modem through which to connect. I am an O2UK Customer and i have been told the user name and pass to use to connect is user=mobileweb and password=password. Im sure this is true because it does get past the verifying username and password bit when i do it this way. But when it gets to the "Registering your computer on the network" part it fails.
What am i doing wrong. I have tried this in both GSM and UMTS mode.
are there any other O2UK Customers who have managed to use their N95 as a modem? If so please can you post here and explain how i do it.
Any help is greatly appreciatedMessage Edited by n95nooby on 29-Oct-200703:05 AM

Do you have an IBM / Lenovo Laptop?
I do and I checked the event logs and noticed failure 680 which indicated that no dial tone could be obtained (cable not plugged it) or similar symptom.
I used to receive the error "one touch access failed to establish a network connection" using the Nokia PC Suite. I checked under start | settings | network connections and selected properties on the valid dial-up device. Then I noticed that the device was using the Internal Thinkpad modem instead of the Nokia. This explained the error 680 as the Thinkpad modem was not cabled to the phone line. After changing the connect using device from thinkpad to Nokia all worked well.
Let me know if this helps.

  • Is there any way for me to reverse tether my ipad in order to yse my computer's network connection via usb?

I need to use an Ipad 2 running 5.1.1 without the use of ANY wireless data transfer, this means no bluetooth - 3g or Wi-Fi. I am aware of creating Wi-Fi hotspots, but there is absolutely no wi-fi option possible. Is this possible? If anyone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry but no, there is no way to use your computer's network connection via USB. If you cannot set up a WiFi network, either via a WiFi access point or through your computer, and cannot use 3G, there's no way I can think of that you will be able to get your iPad onto the Internet.
You can, of course, sync apps, media, documents, mail messages, address book contacts, etc.  from your computer to your iPad via the USB cable.

  • L7680 Can't connect via Network works fine direct connected via USB Please Help!

    Greetings All,
I have an HP L7680 that has been having this same problem since I purchased it and the only cure that has ever worked is to completley reload Windows XP and start over which I am very tired of reloading XP to resolve a printer problem.
This has been posted by several other people but I don't see where anyone has posted a fix.
When I first install the printer everything usualy works fine and it runs fine for a few mionths. Then the first indicatrion of a problem is the scanner quits working. Then when I try to reinstall the software the printer does not show up.  I read and tried every solution and have spent nuerous hours with HP support to no avail.
The printer works fine direct connected via a USB cable and it works fine with two other computers on the same network. One of the other computers has the exact same OS and is the same HP model laptop.
I don't think the uninstall is completley removing all the files or reinstalling everything fresh when I reload. I have tried the Level 1 through 4 uninstall utility posted on HP's site and have tried all sugestions posted in this forum.
Below is a better rundown of the problem.
When the Scan function is called, a "Scanning" window appears, and hangs
I have an HP Laptop with XP32 Bit software
Once the scanning window appears it stays there forever
Only way to clear scanning page is to terminate hpoews01.exe with Task Manager
Scanner does not show up in Paint or Photoshop ect.
Web Scan Does work and printer shows up using IP address.
Scanner shows up fine on a web page
HP support in India has been no help and now my printer is out of warranty so even less help
    Thank you,
    Dave

I had a similar problem with my OfficeJet L7680 and here's how I fixed it.
    18APR10 - from Dan
I lost my L7680 network link (using CAT5 from printer to router) and could not print to it over the network.  However, I could print from a PC with a USB cable directly to the printer, but there are currently three PCs connected wireless to the network.  I think I have a viable solution for anyone with the same problem and is not related to the operating system of the PCs.
Originally, I went to the HP site and downloaded the program for the L7680, Critical Update to Enhance Reliability of Network and USB Connectivity and Improve System Responsive....  This worked wonders until my modem and/or router went down.  I could see ink levels from my PC, scan, print, and so on.  Then I somehow lost my network connection again.  When I checked the network settings on the L7680 printer panel (Setup, 5 - Network, 1 - View Network Settings, 2 - Display Wired Settings), I noticed a different IP address than the original 192.168.1.100.  Once I figured out how to reset the printer to that one, it connected and worked as it should.
Here's how to reset it:  1.  Power down all devices (wired and wireless) to the router (I even disconnected the printer power cord and CAT5 cable at the printer); 2. Power down the modem and router - wait a minute or so before powering back up;  3.  Power up the modem and give it a minute or so to go through system checks, which will normally acquire a new IP address from your ISP;  4. Power up the router and let it go through its system checks; 5.  Connect the CAT5 cable from the printer to the router and power it up before you power up and connect any other computers.  This should assign the printer the first IP address from the router, which should be 192.168.1.100.  Once the printer goes through its start-up checks, you can check its assigned IP address from its panel.  6.  Power up any other PCs or devices to the router.  They should be assigned successive IP address numbers from the router.  You can check these using a browser in the PC after typing in 192.168.1.1, logging in to the router, and checking the appropriate place in the router driver/software displayed in the browser.  I was not able to reassign IP addresses in my router's driver/software to individual devices, but this method did the trick.  I did not try to change the IP address of the printer from its panel to match what had been inadvertently reassigned to it.  That might be another option to synchronize the printer and router with the same IP address.  If the printer loses its connection again, you'll have to synchronize what the printer has with what the router shows.  This worked for me.

  • Cant see External USB on network via Apple Airport Extreme (XP) - FIXED!!!

    Hello,
I started this post many, many months ago that has now been archived
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7796850#7796850
and finally I've solved the problem!!!
I tried everything to share my external USB HDD over my home network through my Apply Airport Extreme, but couldn't get it to work!!!
I have a mac and PC, with the PC being closest to the DSL modem so I installed the Airport utility on the PC to configure it.. that was my mistake!! ..I fixed the issue my installing the utility on my Mac and configuring it from there.. now it works great!! - I can Access my hdd from anwhere on the network - and as a bonus, I have managed to copy files direct from my mac to my shared files folder in windows!!
    I hope this helps someone!!

"so you can't use ethernet or wireless to connect the printer?"
There is no Ethernet port on the HP printer, nor does it have a wireless card; it is not a "network ready" printer, just a USB printer. I connected the printer to the network via a USB cable from the printer to the Airport Extreme. All the systems on the network can see the printer, show it as the default printer, but they can't print to it. When I was using the Airport Express as a print server, the printer was connected to the Express via its USB port and the Express was connected to the Linksys router via an Ethernet cable. In this scenario, everything worked perfectly, I could print from my wireless and wired systems with no problems at all.
Your printer has wireless capablities so has an IP adress. Does a USB printer have an IP address? I don't think so, but if it does, please tell me how to find out what it is - maybe that is my problem; I didn't need this info when I was using the Express as a print server. (Maybe I just need to buy another Express and use it as a print server and forget about using the USB port on the Extreme...defeats the purpose of getting the Extreme in the first place, but at least I could stop wasting my time with all of this!)

  • Palm Pre Tethering to Windows Mobile Device via Dialup Network or USB

I've got a Windows Mobile device that I tethered to the Internet via Dialup Network on my old Verizon phone, and would like to use the Palm Pre for that same purpose. The Windows device does not have wi-fi, so that's not an option, but maybe tethering through USB might work.
Does anyone have any experience with this and can give me some direction on setting it up? Thanks!

there is a way to connect via usb,
refer to precentral.net and do a search.
