Networking with static IP address from ISP

I have been using an Airport Extreme to run a small business network, which has been working fine. However, I now wnat to network my desktop macs and I would prefer that my desktop macs were accessing the internet and networked some other way other than wirelessly. I also have a Lacie drive which I want to connect to the network to use as a back-up device for all the macs. The only computer I would leave to access the wireless setup would be a powerbook.
I have therefore connected a switch to my modem, and have linked each device into the switch i.e 2 desktop macs, the Airport Extreme and my Lacie drive.
The problem I have is that when I try to connect to the internet via the network I can only get one computer to access the web at one time. I have a static IP address and can only guess that this is what is causing the problem...
The only way I can get things to work is by giving every device a manual IP address. I don't really want to have to do this though because I have clients that come into the office, along with co-workers, who will need to access the network. Ideally I would like them to be able to just plug into the network via an ethernet cable and not have the hassle of assigining a manual IP address. I also want to siplify things for myself and would like to just plug in devices without worrying about IP adrresses.
Networking is new to me so I am not very clued up. If anyone has the patience to help it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You need to turn on connection sharing in on the Internet tab in the airport utility for the device to issue IP addresses to the computers - this should be a separate item from the IP address the router has for your ISP. Use the Share a public IP address option. (might want to save a copy of your setup before you change anything so you can revert if necessary).
Then check the DHCP tab to make sure the router is giving out addresses.

  • Problem iPhone WiFi Connection to Airport Express with static IP addresses

We have our Airport Express configured on the LAN with a fixed IP. It is not distributing IP addresses, or providing DHCP services; it simply links the WiFi to the LAN.
To connect via WiFi you set a static IP for the wireless device and enter all IP information by hand (IP/Router/Mask/DHCP etc). Laptops can connect fine, and use the network.
The iPhone connects to the wireless network ok (we tried with security on and off), however, it seems to be unable to successfully use the network. Any attempt to browse a web page using a numeric IP address, or regular IP address, fails.
Has anyone successfully used the iPhone on a WiFi network with static IP addresses, and a Wireless access point that also uses a static IP address?

The problem with static IP on iPhone was caused by the IP address being blocked by over-zealous network manager...

  • How to use Airport Extreme to create a second wireless network with different IP addresses behind an existing modem/router?

    Hi,
I have an existing modem/router from my ISP that does DHCP and NAT with base IP 192.168.1.1 distributed in the wireless network. I use this wireless network for our private devices. I could turn off the DHCP server in this first router, but there isn't a separate setting to turn off NAT.
I want to connect my Airport Extreme (4th gen) to this existing router to create a separate wireless network for visiting guests, where IP addresses of 10.0.0.0 etc. are used. So I do not want to use the Airport Extreme in bridge mode, as I would like to keep the devices on the first network 'invisible' for those on the second network. (P.S. when connected in bridge mode, the Airport works well and can distribute a network with a different name from the first. It's just that I would feel more comfortable about our privacy if the Airport were to distribute a different IP range. False security, maybe?)
I've tried doing this by 'Sharing a public IP address' in Airport Utility's Internet tab, leaving TCP/IP's setting to 'via DHCP', setting DHCP addresses to start with 10.0.0.2 up to 200 with all else blank, and not using a standard host nor NAT-PMP in the NAT tab.
When I do this the Airport complains of a 'double NAT issue'. Internet connectivity seems to be OK, but when switching between the two networks on my Mac I get complaints about my IP address being in use by another device intermittently.
Can anyone help in how to get the 'double NAT issue' resolved?
    Thanks!

So if someone is connected to the modem/router network they will be able to see the HD I will have put in to the AirPort Extreme?
As I said above.....since the modem/router and AirPort are bridged, devices on the modem/router wireless will be able to "see" devices on the AirPort wireless, and vice versa.....
If they can see the HD connected to the AirPort Extreme, will they be able to access it
Yes, unless you plan to password protect the drive connected to the AirPort Extreme.
or will they still need the password needed to get onto the AirPort Extreme network?
The modem/router and AirPort Extreme are bridged. They are on the same network. All devices are on the same network when the modem/router and AirPort are bridged. Not sure how else that I can say this.
Also, because it is bridged, I shouldn't have any problems accessing the HD I will have connected to the AirPort Extreme from an external location?
Accessing devices from a remote location is never easy....and a topic for a different post/discussion. If you have a "static" Internet IP address from your provider, and have all the details on how to forward ports on your modem/router, you are off to a good start.
Apparently there is some addressing issues because devices can be seen as "Double IP" because the modem/router would have allocated IP's as well as the AirPort allocating IP's thus making connections slower until resolved
When you "bridge", all IP addresses are issued by one device. There will be no conflicts on the network, since they are bridged.
Once again, in very simple terms, you have two doors (access points) that open into the same room (network).  One "door" is the modem/router and the other "door" is the AirPort Extreme. They are on the same network....("room") because they are bridged.

  • Cisco ASA 5505 - problem with negotiating IP address from PPPoE

    Hi all,
I have problem with negotiating IP address from PPPoE. There is following design: ISP providing vDSL ending on VDSL modem in bridge mode. Behind brigde modem is ASA 5505 terminting PPPoE on OUTSIDE. Everything works fine except  negotiating IP address from PPPoE server.
I have configured ASA 5505 with (ASA Version 9.2(2)4) for PPPoE like this [1.]. But If i try to "show" IP address on OUTSIDE interface a get this [2.], ok strange but let's continue. If list "show vpdn pppinterface id 1"  i get this [3.]. Seems that I got public IP addres what was right, but this IP address was not associated with interface OUTSIDE?
Well, if I set IP address manually like this [4.] and also set a default route everything works fine but what will happen when ISP change reservation for my IP address or default gateway.
I have tried different version of ASA OS like 8.4, 9.1 but without luck.
Can anybody help me. Thanks a lot.

  • Airport Express and wired network with static IPs

I have a wired network with static IPs. I have a block of free IPs I can use to connect to this network. Manually setting any of one IP from this block on my MacBook Pro via ethernet works great - full network connectivity including internet.
What I wish to do is add an Airport Express in between my MBP and the network, so that I may have greater freedom (wireless opposed to wired). Is the AX capable of this? If yes, what are the correct settings? Keep in mind there is no DHCP server on the network.
I have tried giving the AX an IP manually and then accessing it from the MBP having the AX share IP (effectively becoming it's own DHCP server?). This gives internet connectivity, but I can't see any of the servers on the network. I assume because I'm now on a new subnet.
So I then changed the AX settings to not distribute an IP and gave the MBP another IP from the block (different from the AX). This gives me the network, but no internet.
    What am I doing wrong?

Okay, I made a mistake and forgot to set the DNS servers manually. It seems the second method works fine. I've set up WPA2 security as well - I'm assuming this is okay in this situation. What is the correct term for this setup? A wireless access point bridge? Is there anything more I should know about this setup? TIA

+You may have already done this, but do you have the first AirPort Express configured to "Allow this network to be extended"?+
Could not find that setting anywhere.
It's in AirPort Utility, AirPort panel, Wireless tab.
When I'm within the range of the base station I connect normally, but further away the connection drops despite the fact that the other Airport is very close and light is green. Interestingly, my PB Pro has signal almost everywhere in the house, but my iPhone and Mac Mini don't. Most likely just a hardware difference?
In AirPort Utility with the second Express, in the AirPort panel, Wireless tab, have you checked "Allow wireless clients"?
The second AP does show an IP address: 10.0.1.3.
With a "Configure IPv4" setting of "Using DHCP", that suggests that the second Express really is connecting to the first Express. In that case I have no other explanation of your your problem.

  • Port Forwarding and Printing with Static IP Address

    Hey there -
I am trying to setup a network printer that can be printed to from anywhere in the world. My organization has 5 static IP addresses given to us by our ISP. Four of those I have on computers, and one of them I have on my Linksys router (WRT54G v.8).
What I want to do is be able to setup a printer on my router that I can print to from anywhere I have an internet connection. My wireless router's static IP address is 74.172.54.XXX - The address on my network is 192.168.7.1 - I have a printer statically assigned the IP address 192.168.7.2 - and I have a port forwarding for port 70 to forward to 192.168.7.2
In theory, I would think that now I could print to 74.172.54.XXX:70 and have no problems. But that doesn't seem to be working. Even printing to 192.168.7.1:70 doesn't seem to work either.
Also, the printer has a web GUI interface that if I type http://192.168.7.1/ into my browser it comes up, so in theory I would think typing http://74.172.54.XXX:70 into my browser it should come up (but it doesn't nor does http://192.168.7.1:70).
Anybody got any suggestions? I tried to do a search about this, but ever Port Forwarding question seemed to deal with gaming (which I have no desire to do). Thanks!
I will include two screen snapshots of what I am talking about:
    Thanks for any help.

Is the router setup to accept static connections?
I have my router set up to accept both, so from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.192 the addresses are static the other addresses are given by DHCP.
If you do not define a range and the address your laptop has as static IP conflicts with the address given by DHCP your loose ... as in you get no address.
Set up of that feature may depend on your type of router but usually any decent router will have that capability ... read your manual for specifics about your unit.
    Best of luck.

  • How do I extend a network with an AirPort Extreme from an Arris TG862?

I'm using Comcast as my ISP, and after some issues with a previous Motorola modem, they supplied me with an Arris TG862 Router/Modem combo tower. I have two AirPort Extremes, one of which was previously connected to the old Motorola modem to send wireless into the house, but it only reached halfway, so I had the other AirPort Extreme in the middle of the house to "catch" the signal and then broadcast it out to the rest of the house. This worked fine for a while.
But with the new TG862, it doesn't seem to be an option. From what I've read, if I have the TG862 in one room (connected to the cable), AirPort Extreme #1 in the middle of the house, trying to join the existing network (or extend it?), and AirPort Extreme #2 in the far end of the house (to extend from AirPort #1), it won't work. Apple's "extension" technology isn't compatible with all other modems or routers, and even if it was, I'd have to somehow configure the TG862 to "allow to be extended."
So my question is, IF there is a desktop utilizing the TG862 as a direct connection (because it has no built-in Wi-Fi), is it possible to put the TG862 into bridge mode, connect one of the AirPort Extremes and have it act as the router so I can use AirPort Extreme #2 to extend that network out to the rest of the house? I want to ensure the desktop still has a connection, but there's Wi-Fi that actually goes out through the whole house.
The connected-to-the-cable-desktop is a PC; we have multiple iPhones, iPads, and anywhere from 1 Mac laptop to 1 iMac in the house at any given time.

Topic title pretty well sums up the question.
I have a TimeCapsule Base Station with two Expresses for extending the network through the house.
We're doing a 3 room addition, and there is not a convenient place to put an Express in a wall outlet in the middle room of the addition, but there's a perfect place to put an Extreme on top of a piece of furniture.
So, can the Extreme act as an "extender" only, in lieu of using an Express?
    Hiya.
You can absolutely extend a network with an Extreme. I've got a 5th gen. Extreme extending a network created with a 3rd gen. Time Capsule. On the Extreme, you'll have the option to allow (or not) WiFi clients. I recommend having all units updated to the current firmware (7.6.1 as of this writing). Note that extending doesn't work in daisy-chain fashion, meaning that your Expresses or Extremes will each connect to and extend from the TC. As such, you'll want the TC to be in as central a location as possible to offer the best coverage.

  • E3000 No Address from ISP on WAN

I have an e3000 that cannot obtain an address from the ISP.  I can get an address on the computer and an old router by directly connecting the cable to the computer or the router.  I can also daisy-chain the e3000 to the old router, and I can get an address on the e3000 from the old router.  I have hard reset the e3000, changed firmware from the Linksys to TomatoUSB and back to Linksys, and I still can't get it to work.  It worked fine on Saturday until a bolt of lightning hit close to the house.  Since then, I cannot get the e3000 to connect to the ISP.  Any ideas?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    O.K. Either get the E3000 fixed/replaced.
Or put a 100 MBit/s switch between the E3000 and the ONT. You could even use your old router for that: open the web interface of your old router. Disable the DHCP server on the old router. Then wire the ONT and the E3000 to LAN ports of your old router. That way you only use the switch in your old router and the E3000 will get an IP address directly from your ISP (i.e. the DHCP server on the old router is disabled and won't be faster to provide an IP address...)
Of course, when you or your ISP upgrades the line to 200 MBit/s or faster you will have to replace the E3000. But for the time being that may be a good option if you can't do a warranty exchange.

  • Linksys WRT54GL won't get dhcp address from isp

    I'm using Linux.
I just bought this router because it had good reviews on Newegg but for the past 4 hours I have gotten nowhere with it.
When I connect the router to the net and click the refresh button on the browser interface, the router doesn't go out and get a dhcp address. I see the initial click of the mouse that hits the modem but no information comes back. No addresses are updated.
I have tried cloning the mac address but that does no good either.
    Any hints appreciated.
    Thanks

Try resetting the router for 30 secs in such a way that power light is blinking on the router. Also, try doing the complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power cables from the modem & from the router. Then, plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are solid on the modem you could plug in the power cable to the router & then try configuring the router & it will definately work!!!

    Hi all
I have a cisco 6500 that i configured a /64 on int1/39 that has a linux server connected to it and supressed RAs. On this server i assigned a static ip,
2001:x:77:4::2. i can ping to/from the server with no issues. However when doing a show ipv6 neighbors i still see the auto config ipv6 on fast1/39.

My question why is that attached server getting an auto config ipv6 address when i have the supress command under interface. Also is it correct to assign a /64 to an int/vlan and statically assign ips instead or should i move to a /56. I'm not really sure if what im doing is common or if it create issues.
    TIA, Paul

Deepak, while i assigned a static ip to the server doing a show ipv6 neighbor shows this static ip and it also shows the auto config ip. Again based on my config above shouldnt it jsut show the static ip. Why is SLAAC in play here if i have
ipv6 nd ra suppress on the interface, will this setup cause issues.

  • Wireless network with fixed IP address

    Hi,
I'm running a Time Capsule/Airport that is first generation with all updated drivers, software, and OS.  The manuals don't match the interfaces on the software, so I can't seem to get this configured.
My problem:  I have business class internet with 5 assigned IP addresses.  I have multiple wireless devices.
My network map looks something like this:
    x.x.x.130  Router provided by ISP
    x.x.x.131  My Time Capsule/Airport
x.x.x 132  My Mac Pro connected by ethernet cable to the TC
That leaves me two IP addresses and at least five other devices that need to be connected.
The older (early 2009) manuals show how to create a private network using 10.1.x.x to 10.1.x.200, with a subnet mask that's different than my ISP.  But, the current interfaces don't support creating this network.
How do I connect these other wireless devices (they include Windows 7 machines, Nooks, iPads, etc).
    Thanks

The owner's manual shows how to set up an internal network using 10.1.1.2-10.1.1.200, but the software no longer allows this (this is what I meant when I said the current interfaces don't support creating this network).  When I set "Share a public...." and I click the tab to set the range of IP addresses, it has my first three numbers set to my internal IP addresses and won't let me create an internal network.
By "my internal IP addresses" I'll presume you mean those ending in 130, 131, and 132 that you first mentioned.  Are the first two numbers of those any of 10.0, 176.16, or 192.168?
    What is the WAN IP
That said, I have no experience with multiple assigned IP addresses.
