Networking with the M1424wr router

I just relocated my home office to another room and want to reconnect an old PC so that I can access the files (and programs?).
In the office previous location, I just had the old PC connected to this same router via CAT5 and the PC showed up in My Network Places etc so that I could access the files.  When the tech came and relocated my system and rewired we did not test the connection to this older computer and now I can't get it to show up even though it is connected to the router directly. In addition, I would like to be able to see files on a third computer that is also CAT5'd to this router and find out if I can network a Toshiba backup drive that is now connected to PC1 via USB.
Some basic info:  Let's call main computer PC1, my husband's computer PC2 (I would like to access files back and forth on these two actively used computers), and the old computer PC3 (no monitor or keyboard connected).  PCs 1 and 3 running XP, PC 2 running W2000, I think.  Also have Norton 360 on PC1 but don't find the configuration user friendly.  Have been told by FIOS reps that this is not their problem -- should have had the tech check this out when he moved the system!
Can anyone help?  Thanks in advance.

I would suggest tha you go into all the machines and delete any saved items in network places. Then run ipconfig and ensure that all the machines are showing ip addresses in subnet 192.168.1.x Then wait a few hours with all the machines switched on and they should appear in browse mode in add a network place. Alternatively After having cleared all the old network places stuff run ipconfig /all on one of the machines and note the dns server ip addresses. Then go and allocate fixed ip addresses to each of the machines and add add the dns server addresses also. Then go into network places and add a network place and type \\the.ip.address.of a machine and hit browse select the shared file info you want and give it the credentials and all should be ok let me know if that helps.

I am having trouble connecting to my network all of a sudden. I am able to connect to other networks but not my own. It is not an issue with the service/router because other devices connect fine. I keep getting kicked off and getting a ! in my airport. Last time it happended I called apple and the suggested I wipe my HD and reinstall everything. I did and it did not work. One day I turned my laptop on and it connected no problem. Now it has kicked me off again. I tried resetting my IP address but that does not work either! Has anyone had this problem?

    Try this:
Apple menu / System Preferences / Network.
Click Location: and select Edit Locations..
Click + (plus sign), and enter a name for the new location - anything will do.
    Apply this.

  • I cannot connect my iPhone 4S to my home wifi. When trying to connect it says I have the wrong password, but I can connect my MacBook to the same network with the same password. I have tried to restart my router, reset my network settings, fail!

Hello, I am having some major troubles connecting my iPhone 4S to my home wifi. When I try to connect on my phone, it says I have an incorrect password. That's not possible because I can connect my MacBook to the same network with the same password. I have reset my network settings on my phone, reset my router, called apple support, triple checked I was trying it in correctly, I have no clue what's going on.
The only thing different is I just moved, but I have the same router/phone/internet provider.
I've seen some discussions of router security options being the problem, I have my router connected to : WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES].
    The other options are: WEP , WPA-PSK[TKIP] , WPA2-PSK [AES] , WPA/WPA2 Enterprise.
My troubleshooting and understanding of all this is pretty limited, my applecare service did not help, please can anyone help me?
    Thanks!

If the issue happened after an update, you may want to go into an Apple Store. Be sure to let them know exactly what's wrong with the device.

  • I am experiencing network failures with my Airport Extremes: the main router is a 2nd Gen, the extension a 5th Gen. The 5th Gen keeps on losing connection with the main router. Any ideas why?

I am experiencing network failures with my Airport Extremes: the main router is a 2nd Gen, the extension a 5th Gen.
The 5th Gen keeps on losing connection with the main router and thus with the internet.
    Any ideas why?

Is the second Extreme configured to "extend" the network created by the first? If so its position must be such that it has a strong wireless connection to the first Extreme. If it is at the limits of the first one's wireless range its connection will be tenuous. Place them closer together and determine if that makes a difference.

  • Why are my devices finding two networks with the same name in my house?

I have Verizon FIOS (Actiontech router) connected with an ethernet cable to my Airport Express. Everything works beautifully through all three levels of my house...except... there are seemingly two networks in the house...a 192.X network (I think that is the Actiontech router), and a 10.X network (I think that must be the airport express)...
    Here is the problem...
My devices (MACS, i-PADS, wireless printers) sometimes connect to the 192.X network (usually on channel 11) and sometimes they connect to the 10.X network (usually on channel 1). If the computers & i-PADS are not on the same network as the printers, then I can't print because the computer can't find the printer.
With the printers, every time the power goes out it's a crapshoot to see which network they reconnect to...and I have not found a way to manually choose a network since both networks have the same name and password (and I think they have to be set up that way in order for the Airport Express to work properly with the Verizon router.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

OK, thanks. Did you see the message I posted right after your previous reply? I'm copying it here. Would choosing option two below, "join a wireless network" vs. "create a wireless network" be similar (or the same) as running in bridge mode?  Thanks.
Tried a different MAC in my house using Lion instead of Mavericks and was able to open a version of Airport Utility. I couldn't find the tabs as in your picture; however, I did find a box that says, "This airport express is set up to create a wireless network." Three options are then listed as follows:
1- create a wireless network (the one that is checked)
    2- join a wireless network
3- disable wireless and connect to a computer or network using Ethernet
If I choose option two above, would that solve the problem?
    Thanks.

  • How can I extend my wireless network with the Time Capsule?

I recently bought a Time Capsule and set it up, backed up all my data, etc. It is currently plugged in to my AT&T Uverse wireless router via a LAN CAT5e cable. I am wondering if it is possible to wirelessly extend my preexisting network with the Time Capsule so I can move it somewhere else in my house where it can still pick up the signal but extend it. And if possible, how so? Or does it ALWAYS have to be wired'connected to my router for the internet to work?
    Thanks in advance.

I am wondering if it is possible to wirelessly extend my preexisting network with the Time Capsule so I can move it somewhere else in my house where it can still pick up the signal but extend it.
Sorry but no.  Extending using only wireless would require that the Time Capsule connect to another Apple router that is producing the wireless network.
Another way of saying the same thing is that you must have two Apple routers to be able to extend the signal wirelessly.

  • Laserwriter 8500 - networking with D-link router

    Hi,
I've just changed my router to a D-link DI-524 and can't get my Laserwriter 8500 to work with it. It was fine with the Netgear Router I used to have.
I'm running a MacBook with OS X 10.5.6, and the printer driver is v.3010.103.
I tried some of the advice on other threads but when I go to Printer/Fax prefs and click 'Default', nothing shows up and the 'Add' Button is dimmed. Tried the IPP setting but didn't really know what I was doing.
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Debbie
PS this was the reason I bought this router, so that I could network the printer.

That is a printer than can print as either an Appletalk printer or an LPR/LPD printer (also called an IP Printer). The easiest way to change printer parameters is with Apple printer Utility. If you do not have a Mac that can run Classic, you cannot run Apple Printer Utility, and may be stuck with Telnet to change printer parameters.
To set it up as an Appletalk printer, you must turn on AppleTalk on your Mac, which is accomplished in:
    System Preferences > Network > (your active network interface) {Ethernet or Airport}
(Turning Appletalk on for one interface may give you a message that you are turning AppleTalk off on a different Network Interface; not a problem.)
Then you need to use Printer Setup and deliberately choose AppleTalk as the connection method -- I do not think default will suffice. (No AppleTalk Zones are involved.) If your printer is turned on, ready, and cabled in, it should appear within a quarter minute.
Some Routers, especially less popular brands, may not support AppleTalk packets transmitted over wireless.
That printer can also be set up as an IP Printer. To run it as an IP Printer, it must have an IP address in the same subnet as your current Router. \[Post back if you do not understand what that means.]
The discussion referenced below has some information that may apply. The original Poster was trying to set up the printer as an IP Printer, then wanted to change to a different Router using a different Internet Service Provider:

  • Connect to one wireless network when multiple networks with the same name

    Hi all,
I'm at a location where there are two networks with the name (e.g.) "wireless". One uses WEP and one uses WPA. The WEP network is weaker than the WPA network, so my Mac tries to connect to the WPA network, even though I have manually setup the wireless network with WEP security (after trying to connect it asks for a WPA password). Is there a way that I can connect to a wireless network by MAC Address, or some way for me to tell the Macbook to ignore the WPA network? The problem is that the SSID is the same, it seems.
    Thanks,
    Nate

The person (the landlord) isn't tech-savvy at all.
    That is clearly obvious as
    1. They would not be using WEP
    2. They would setup a different SSID
WEP is not secure and can be cracked in minutes using tools readily available on the internet. If a hacker gain access to that network they could run other tools and hijack the dns and then you could be visiting sites on your mac that are completely bogus but look real.
Also it is common trick that hackers use is to setup an access point nearby with the sane SSID to capture details from users that join their network thinking they have joined their own network. Again the hacker can hijack the dns and monitor all your browsing and capture details.
The fact that someone has setup an SSID nearby with the same name would make me very suspicious.
I would treat your landlord's network as an untrusted network same as when your using a public wifi like coffebucks.

  • Add Wireless N Router To Network With An Actiontec Router

Hi everyone, I know this wireless N thing is being beaten to death but I just really need to be pointed in the right direction.  I recently built a HTPC setup with a SiliconDust HD Homerun network tuner so I could share three tuners with computers on my network.  I've got two PCs wired to the network right now which share them fine.  But the problem I'm running into is when I try to set up my laptop to watch something wirelessly, usually a game in HD.  The signal is very weak and I constantly lose the tuners because of that, not to mention the picture is very choppy.  I saw on a Microsoft Windows Media Center site that they don't recommend streaming HD TV feeds over anything other than a wireless N connection.  I currently have the standard Actiontec router that came with FiOS, and it doesn't the N band.  Now, that router accesses the internet signal through a coax so I know I can't get rid of it, but I've seen mentioned in a couple of places that you can just add a wireless N router into the network and turn off the wireless on the Actiontec router.  This is the router I was thinking of getting:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Cisco+Linksys+-+E1200+Wireless-N+Router+with+4-Port+Ethernet+Switch/2225...
My current network setup is like this: Actiontec router upstairs which carries internet to -> a gigabit switch connected to -> computer, tuners, and printer upstairs, with a line run to -> another gigabit switch downstairs which connects to -> a computer, and an XBox.
So a couple of questions about this:
    - Where would this go on the network?  Would it go after the router and before the switches, like I run the internet into the new router then out to the switch, or can I just add it to one of the switches?
    - Will I need to do any sort of port forwarding or anything, or assiging of IP addresses?
    - Anything else I should know or might run into?
I love my FiOS service so hopefully this will help me get even more out of it!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I wanted to upgrade to an N protocol wireless router but since Verizon doesn’t offer the option, I purchased a Netgear N600. Unfortunately, after it arrived, I discovered that it didn’t have a coax connection as did the Verizon Actiontec. I then set out to find out how to daisy chain the routers to leave the Actiontec connected to the coax and connect the two routers via Ethernet cable. To my good fortune, during the time I spent on the phone with Netgear, I learned my way around their router interface and with the help of a co-worker that actually has a solid understanding of router/network configuration, I finally got everything working correctly – my port forwarding for RDC login worked, I could connect devices to either router and everything could once again see each other (e.g. PC, printer via Ethernet, Blu-ray player for Netflix, receiver for streaming Windows Media Player). Hopefully, this post will help you get up and running quickly and avoid the several hours I spent groping in the dark for the correct configuration.
Login to Verizon Actiontec router (type 192.168.1.1 into browser address bar).
No configuration changes are necessary on the Actiontec, you just need to identify an open IP address range in My Network section (I chose 192.168.1.50). This will be used as your static IP address of the Netgear router LAN settings.
Connect you PC via Ethernet cable directly into an Ethernet port (not WAN/Internet) on the Netgear router. No other connections are needed at this point.
Note: Do not use the Netgear wizard CD to setup the router. It will not take you through the necessary steps as you’re not setting it up as a router.
Login to the Netgear router (type routerlogin.net into the browser address bar) using the default login of “admin” and password “password”. Depending on your firmware version, your interface may vary but hopefully you’ll be able to find the same configuration options in either but perhaps not in the same order or placement. For subsequent logins after the router is active, you may need to type the Netgear IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.50) as routerlogin.net may open a search.
At the top of the Netgear genie, click on the Advanced tab.
On the left side, expand Setup, then select Internet Setup.
Select “Get dynamically from ISP”, under Internet IP Address.
Under Domain Name Server (DNS) Address, select “Use These DNS Servers”, and enter the IP Address of your Actiontec router (e.g. 192.168.1.1) in the Primary DNS” field.
Next go down a few options  within Setup to Wireless Setup.
In the Wireless Network 2.4GHz section, click Enable SSID broadcast.
Enter a meaningful name in “Name (SSID)” as this is what will be displayed for your wireless connection.
    For Channel, select Auto.
For Mode, select “Up to 300 Mbps”.
Security Options, recommend WPK2-PSK[AES] for longer/stronger password options.
Set the password of your choice.
Repeat the same process for Wireless Network 5GHz, except vary the name slightly so you’ll be able to distinguish which band you’ll connect to. You can optionally use the same or different password as your 2.4GHz. The only exception is you’ll have to select a Channel of your choice.
Next go down a couple more options within Setup to the LAN Setup.
In the LAN TCP/IP Setup section, enter the IP Address you chose in step 2 (e.g. 192.168.1.50).
Enter the IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Leave the block for “Use Router as DHCP Server” blank as your IP assignment will be handled by your Actiontec router.
You’re now finished with the configuration and you can connect the Actiontec router to the Netgear router using an Ethernet cable using the LAN ports (Note: do not connect the two routers using the WAN/Internet ports on either). You may connect your devices (PC, printers, A/V devices, etc.) to either router. If you have devices that are gigabit capable, you’ll want to connect them to the Netgear router to take advantage of the higher speed.
To avoid any possible interference between the 2.4GHz range of the two routers, you can optionally turn off the Actiontec wireless capability by logging into the Actiontec router admin (described above), go to the My Router tab, and there should be an option for “Change Wireless Settings” in the Quick Links section. Option 1 allows you to turn On/Off the wireless portion of the router.

  • I have an IPA2 wifi 3g working fine with wifi up for 3 monthes then from two weeks it get connection but after 1 minutes stop to serf/download with signal and connection always present. With the same router are still connected others 3 pc working!

    I all,
    the scenario is the following:
WIFI connection with TISCALI operator. Encryption made by WPA2 EAS with router SITECOM or tested also with another router DIGICOM with WPA TPK.
From December up to end of March the IPAD2 working perfectly serfing and downloading.
By two weeks it has a very strange behavour without have changed any configuration on IPAD or network:
with WIFI turned on it discover about 4 different ntw among them the mine, I successfully authenticate with psw the my ntw,
the IPAD2 start to run with Safari without problems, but after about 1 minutes, it stop to serf or download and answer that the Server cannot be reached or the page cannot be open, at the same time the signal is present on the icon of WIFI and it is strong.
This problem is systematic: If I dissasociate the ntw and then authenticate again I start to serf again for 1 minutes (more or less) and then it stops again, this occurs every time I authenticate the ntw after a disassociation.
I made some test changing the encryption from WPA2, WPA and also without encryption but the result was always the same, after about one minute the server seems to be for the IPAD2 no more reachable while the others PC and netbook connected to the same router continue to serf/download without problems!
I also tried to change the router with a DIGCOM that I did not use generally, but the behavour is always the same.
Since the IOS was the 4.3 revisin, I made the upgrade by means Itunes to IOS 5.1 succesfully installed.
But unfortunatelly all test repeted have had the same negative result with the same behavour!
Yesterday I tried to do the complete restore of the System but the tests had the same rsult.
I really don't know how to proceed, the problem started suddenly without any action from my side....is there someone that can help me?

  • Extending a extreme network with older Apple router

    Hi all
I need to extend my airport extreme A1134 network with an older aiport router A1304 UFO kind.
1st is this compatible with 10.85?
2nd how do i get the airport utility to see the older one...its booted but i cant see it
3rd how do i chain it?
4th i need to connect a internet company remote phone to one of the ethernet ports of the older modem-which one do i use?

I need to extend my airport extreme A1134 network with an older aiport router A1304 UFO kind.
Unfortuntately, the older AirPort Extreme does not have a feature to "extend a wireless network", so it cannot extend the network of the newer AirPort Extreme wirelessly.....if that is your goal.
1st is this compatible with 10.85?
No, the older AirPort Extreme would need a Mac running Leopard (10.5.x), Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or a PC for set up......even if it were compatible with the newer AirPort Extreme for the purpose that you ask about.
Unfortunately, it's not....as mentioned above...IF....you are trying to connect using wireless between the two AirPort devices.

  • Is it possible to extend an Airport Extreme Network with a normal router ?

    Hi everyone !
I know this question as been asked a lot before, but not in this way, I always saw : How to connect an Airport Extreme/Express to a Normal (D-Link, Linksys, Ect.) Router. What I wan't to do is connect a normal router to my existing Airport Extreme to extend the range of it. I know you can extend the network with an Airport Express, the thing is, i wan't to try with the router I replaced by the Airport Extreme. It's an D-Link DIR-615. If someone know how to do this it will be very nice and helpfull for me! I know on Apple website it says that it's not possible but some people seems to get it to work!
    Thanks a lot !
(Sorry for my bad english i'm french Canadien)

You can extend the wireless range of the AirPort with a D-Link or the other way around ... BUT only if the connection between them is wired. This would be the basis of a roaming network. If you must have them interconnected by wireless, then it will NOT work.
