Networking with window 7 computer

Cannot get my MAcBook Pro to see another laptop running windows 7. That computer can see and access my computer. How do I add him to my network? My computer can see another machine which we have that runs XP.

Hello leetle. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
In order for the MacBook to "see" the Windows 7 laptop, that laptop needs to be configured to share. Similar to WinXP, you can configure the Win7 laptop for sharing.
Basic steps to configure Win7 for network sharing:
o Start > Computer > Select the folder or drive you want to share > Right-click the Select Properties
o Right-click on this folder or drive, and then, select Properties > Sharing tab > Share
o Choose who to share the folder or drive with, and then, Click on Share.

  • Network with windows computer... how?

i have asked this question before in another forum but was left only more confused. i have a vista laptop and a macbook over a home wifi network. they both use the internet through it. now i have enabled sharing and network discovery on vista laptop and also on mac. now the problem is they cannot detect each other. sometimes when they do detect the other but are not able to open their shared folders.
i would like to have a sharing where there is no username and pwd required. if the two are on at anytime they should be able to see each others shared files.
    thanks

I was having a similar problem with XP. Fortunately I'm fairly windows literate so reading between the lines for the windows side was not a problem. Thanks so much for posting this link. I still have several minor issues but i'm up and running. My PC does not show up under shared but shows in network in finder. I can only log on to the PC as guest as it does not recognise my password for some reason although I've double checked the password for the PC in keychain.
Also I want to change my TimeCapsule password but when I try I get a password expired message? I don't think it matters but my mac connects wirelessly to a timecapsule which is connected to the PC via ethernet.
    Any ideas would be appreciated

  • Major issue trying to network with windows computer via smb

I'm pretty much ready to get rid of osx all together at this point and go to windows 7. I've tried all kinds of tricks for mount/unmounting smb shares, but I still constantly get random lockups...sometimes not even coming out of sleep. Any one else having this many problems with trying to access shares on windows? the worst part is when these crashes occur I can't force terminate any processes only a hard power down and restart fixes it.
    any suggestions would be appreciated

That got me thinking. Are you just connecting via the Finder? Maybe try setting up Autofs. I used it with sshfs all the time. Unfortunately, I know little about SMB.
I was looking for a good link and came across this PDF from Apple. I have never seen it before but had done quite a bit of research on autofs. I have to find more of these "Technical White Papers" from Apple.

    Hi Sig,
The issue is that i only want the shared folders to be accessed through windows 7.
Whats the point otherwise to have shared folders?

  • HP LaserJet M1120 MFP will not print on wireless network with Windows 8.1 operating system

The printer worked on the wireless network with Windows 8.
I have been advised that it does not work with windows 8.1 because a driver is required. However this is not available to download.
It is ridiculous that by having the latest operating system I am unable to use the HP printer on the wireless network
When will HP have the driver to download?

  • How do I connect to a Wi-Fi network with Windows 10?

QuestionHow do I connect to a Wi-Fi / wireless network with Windows 10?
AnswerNote: This article describes connecting to wireless networks in Windows 10. Separate articles exists for doing this in Windows 8 and Windows 7.
To connect to a wireless network in Windows 10, follow these simple steps:
Select the wireless icon in the bottom-right near the clock. If you don't see it, you might need to press the up arrow to see more icons.
A panel will open on the right that lists detected wireless networks.
At the bottom of the panel, you'll see buttons for Wi-Fi and Airplane mode.
Ensure Wi-Fi is enabled and Airplane mode is disabled.
Select your wireless network from the list.
You can check the box next to Connect automatically if you prefer.
    Now select Connect.
If it requires a password, it'll prompt you. In that case, enter your credentials and follow the prompts.
You can also watch this video showing how to connect to Wi-Fi with Windows 10:

What are you trying to do the password on .. I have never noticed that it is limited to specific lengths unless you use WEP.. surely you don't use wep.

  • Networking with Windows PC

I have 2 computers. One is a Powerbook G4 12-inch. The other is Dell Dimension E310. They both connect to the Internet perfectly via an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. I would like to transfer files (picture, movies, etc.) from the Powerbook to the Dell. I created a Network Place on my Dell. In the Network tab in the Finder in the Powerbook, the Folder of my workgroup is there. I try place a file inside that folder but comes up with "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured. (Error code -61)" All I want to do is set-up a netywork so the 2 computers can recognize each other and send files to each other once in a while via the Airport Extreme Base Station. If this cannot be done, please tell me. If it can be done, what are the easiest steps to get this done so the 2 computers can recognize each other and send files to one another?

If you are asking about such a question it is best answered by posting a new question.
You can cut and paste the question you posted here and ask about networking with Windows servers. You will get more and better responses from more mac experts.
You should have no problems. The key word being "should". The reality is that frequent changes to X security and the Windows environment may break the ease with which you can network. Don't worry about reading and writing to a disk that has been formatted diffently. Mac and windows machines are frequently interfacing with drives formatted in foreign formats with no problem. The network should handle the differences.
What you should be concerned with is the IT support that you may or may not have with an orphan laptop. Many in IT don't want to deal with macs (or linux, or anything else). Without their support you may not be happy. It won't be the mac's fault but that does not matter.
The good thing about the new mac laptops is that you can also install Windows and if any problems persist you can switch to Windows while resolving any mac issues. It really is pretty tough to claim that macs can't exist in pc land any more. Before you may have had to resort to virtual pc (with it's issues) but now you can just reboot into Windows. You should not have to but it is there if needed. I see no reason to not get the mac.

  • MP560 on a Mac OSX networked with Windows 7, recognizes network but doesn't print text

I have a Canon Pixma MP560 connected to a MacBook Pro with OS 10.9.5 which is wire-networked through a Time Warner Arris TG862 modem to a Dell Latitude E6410 laptop and a Lenovo desktop, both of which have Windows 7. The printer is USB cable connected to the MacBook, and works fine. On the Mac, at System Preferences>>Sharing, Printer Sharing is selected, the MP560 highlighted, and at Users>>"Everyone Can Print"; and at System Preferences>>Printers & Scanners, "Share this printer on the network" is selected. On the Lenovo and Dell, I installed Bonjour, and both can "see" the MP560, and at File>Print on both, the printer is recognized and activated. BUT all it does is shoot out a blank sheet of paper; the text is not printed. Evidently there is something I have not done, some box I have not checked off. I will appreciate any ideas! Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Some days after posting here, I asked this question at another Canon website, and learned that in circumstances similar to mine described here, Canon recommends that the MP560 "be connected to your Windows computer then shared to your Macintosh", rather than, as in my case, having the MP560 connected to the Mac and then shared with the Windows computers.

  • Problem networking with windows PCs

I'm trying to share my "public" folder with the Windows computers on my network, so I start Windows Sharing, and then it tells me I have to enable at least one user to start windows sharing, so I enable my username, and put in my password. When I go to the windows machine, I create a new network place, etc. and browse for my computer. My mac is found, but it won't let me open it at all. When I right-click and hit "open", it asks me for my password, so I put it in, and now my entire home directory is available to everyone on the network (not good). I can't for the life of me figure out how to stop it from sharing EVERYTHING in my home directory. Even if I stop windows sharing and reconnect, it still remembers my password and shares my entire home directory. I realize that I signed in on the remote windows computer as myself, which was a mistake. How do I sign out??? Even when I "disconnect from server" on the PC, it doesn't actually disconnect. My second question is: How do I ONLY share my "public" folder? Every piece of documentation I've found on the subject says that by default it should ONLY share that folder, yet it shares EVERYTHING. It won't let me connect to my computer at all from the PC unless I put in my user password. Please help!!! Thanks!
    Powerbook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thanks for your replies. I found a solution to my problem and it was indeed fixed by changing settings on the XP. It was related to sharing from a NTFS filesystem.
My problem was, I could ping the XP, even login with remote desktop, only I was unable to connect to shares. I saw the hostname in the network list, and if I connected it listed the shares, but after identification it always failed to find the alias. Trying via the command shell with smbclient showed me it gave a NTSTATUS_LOGONFAILURE.
If found this article Q304040 on the microsoft knowledge base :
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040/en-us
In my case switching the "Use Simple File Sharing" feature OFF solved the problem.

  • OS9.2- Is it possible to network with windows PCs ?

Relatively new to the world of macs -have a Quicksilver(2002) dualbooting into OS9.2.2 & OSX Tiger. It's connected via a netgear router to the internet which works fine in either system.
When booted into OSX I've worked out how to network with the 2 other Window XP computers that are connected to the router, but I can't figure out how to get the mac to see the other computers when booted in OS9.2. Is it possible or not?
Also although I can access shared documents on the PCs while in OSX I can't get the mac to see the printer that is on the network (connected via 1 of the PCS.)
Is it because it's an OKI C3200 colour laserprinter & it's incompatible with a mac, or have I just not set it up correctly?

OS9 doesn't understand SMB, it can be set up to read PC disks via SCSI, but haven't found a way to Network it yet... unless you can get hold of an old copy of Virtual PC®, or get some Mac Services on the PC itself.

  • IMac G5 sharing files with windows computer

    Hi,
I have an iMac g5 which is wireless, I want to be able to access my other windows based computers to share files.
I have a Netgear wireless router and my iMac g5 is connected to the network (i.e. the internet works). From a windows computer I can access my iMac g5 through using "run" and typing in my ip and username, for my imac g5.
Apple help tells me that if I open a finder window and click on the network tab my workgroup will be there and all my computers will be there and i can connect to them. However the network appears but none of my computers do?
p.s. I have windows file sharing and apple talk activated.
    How can i fix this?

  • Can't see wireless network with Windows Vista

I have the Airport Extreme N and two PCs, one with W XP and one with W Vista. Everything works fine with the XP PC. On the Vista PC, I can connect to the network with LAN, but I can’t see the wireless network.
The W Vista PC can identify other networks around the block, so the Broadcom 802.11g network adapter seems to work fine. The wireless runs on channel 13, which is OK for the XP PC. I have installed the latest update for the Airport Extreme.
Any suggestions to what I can do to get the W Vista PC working on wireless?
    Best, Kasper

    Hi,
I also have the same problem.
My belkin wirelss router is set to channel 13, therefore my macbook cannot see this network when it search's, for the above reasons.
However unlike the situation above I am unable to change from channel 13 as we have discovered in the past that this is the only channel that is not in use by other networks around our area. The rest gave us interferance troubles.
I have a number of windows laptops in the house and there is a setting that you can change so the laptop will search for channel 13. I was wondering if anyone is aware of a setting on the macbook that will make the airport card search for 1 - 13 not just channels 1 - 10 as it is now.
I thought I would add this question to this topic as it is very similar. I hope I was correct in doing so.
    Thanks,
    Josh
