Networking WRT54gs

Ok, this is my first post so sorry in advance. I have the Linksys WRT54gs. I have been using it wirelessly and wired to my laptop. I have my xbox 360 hardwired to the router. Problem, I can only be online with one at a time not both at the same time.
I just recently purchase a Desktop for my house. Which obviously I want to network all 3.
Im not sure what Im doing wrong but only 1 of the 3 my be connected at one time. Im not sure if its settings in the router that need to be changed or what. Just any kind of help would be much appriciated.
Thank you very much!!!

1)  Please state your ISP
2)  Please state the make and exact model number of your modem (not the WRT54GS).
3)  How is your modem connected to the WRT54GS?  It should be connected by ethernet cable, from the ethernet port of the modem to the Internet port of the WRT54GS.  If, by mistake, you connected your modem to one of the four LAN ports on the WRT54GS, then this would cause the problem that you described.

  • Major instability with Network Magic for Mac

First of all, I'm a long time LELA user which has been great for quickly gaining an understanding of what is connected to the network.  I like being able to see both connected and disconnected devices.
I thought I would give Network Magic a shot since that is where the future direction is headed.  It has great potential but right now is a major pain in the rear.  I have a rather large home network with roughly 15 devices connected or disconnected at any given time.  At first the network map worked like LELA in that it would show all devices disconnect or connected.  I have two Mac laptops that have different IP and MAC addressses depending on whether they are connected via wired or wireless.
After installing the Mac client on both Mac laptops that's when the frustration began.  It seems that with the Mac client software running on both Macs NM5.5 only wants to recognize one on the map at a time.  Every few minutes I get an alert that a new device has been detected.  But what really happens is the existing laptop drops off the map and the other will pop on.  On the Mac itself it automatically triggers the Network Magic screen to popup which is a major annoyance.  A few minutes will go by and then the process repeats itself.  This laptop will drop of the network map and the other will pop back on.  Again, this pops up the Network Magic window on the 2nd laptop which is an annoyance.
Furthermore, when one laptop drops off the... printers that are shared from another Windows PC are no longer available and accessible on the Mac.  Rest assured... waiting another few minutes the process will repeat itself.
The other major downside is after installing the Mac clients the network map only shows the name of the Mac laptop and is always recognized as one device regardless of IP or MAC address.  I no longer have two seperate IP/MAC devices showing on the map depending on whether it is a wired or wireless connection.    I cannot look at the map and quickly know whether the device is connected via wire or wireless.  Thus when I print a hard copy of all my network devices and settings I dont' get to see the MAC address and details for the non-connected MAC/IP.
Finally, the Mac client does not have the ability to "generate daily computer reports" of the usage.
At this point I am forced to uninstall the Mac clients until a solution for this problem is provided.  I'm glad I checked out the trial version first!

  • Orig. Airport card loses IP, maintains connection to Linksys network

I'm posting here because I don't see a listing for plain old Airport cards. If there's a better spot in the forums for this, please let me know where it ought to go.
    The setup:
Dual 867 Power Mac G4 (MDD) with old-school Airport card (both purchased back in 2002), running 10.4.10, and connecting to a Linksys wireless network (WRT54G wireless G-router, with a WRE54G wireless-G range expander). For the most part, this has worked out very well for the past several months.
    The problem:
The IP address seems to drop out randomly, but not the wireless connection itself. I'll lose internet access, but have a full four bars on the Airport signal indicator. Pinging either the router or the extender fails. Shutting off Airport via the menu bar and then turning it back on will bring back the IP.
    The bigger problem:
This used to happen once in a while, now once or twice a week, but switching the Airport off and then on brought it back. Now it's happening every five to ten minutes, starting this evening. It does it with both static and dynamic IP addresses; the static IP remains in the System Preferences window, the dynamic one actually vanishes until I restart the Airport card.
I ran into wireless problems yesterday where the SSID and the network just up and vanished. I'd previously attributed this to environmental considerations since it had happened a few times before and normally fixed itself within 30 minutes to a few hours. After it failed to come back by this morning I upgraded the firmware on both the router and extender to the latest versions available from Linksys. All was right with the world for several hours.
Until the problem with the IP dropping while the wireless connection remains returned. Then it got worse. Now it drops on a far more frequent basis than before. This only happens on my desktop Mac. I'm on my Windows XP machine (same room, same wireless network, using a Linksys USB wireless adapter). The Windows machine is fine; it does not lose IP address when the Mac does. Since I have a full connection and the Windows machine doesn't seem bothered at all, I'm guessing it's something to do with the Airport card in the Mac.
Apple's software update tells me there's no new software available for my machine, which leaves me with no idea what's causing this or how to fix it.
Any advice, solutions, or tips are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Some of this might be review for you...
An IP address is how the data finds you on your respective network, like the street address on your house. When you boot up your computer and connect to your network your computer is connecting with either a static or dynamic IP address. Static means every time you boot up, your machine is using the same one you've assigned to it. Dynamic means that each time you boot up your machine gets whatever one is next in line.
Odds are if you've never set this, you're using a dynamic address which means you're using DHCP. To check, go to your System Preferences -> Network Preferences -> and double click on the Airport connection. You'll see a few different options, so click on TCP/IP. That will show you if you've got a static IP address ("Manually" appears on the pull-down menu) or a dynamic one (DHCP).
Unless you have to forward ports or are looking for volumes on your network using a static IP, DHCP for a dynamic IP is fine.
The "new" Airport card wasn't a 100% fix. My IP address does seem to mean nothing every once in a while. I sometimes have to switch the Airport off and then turn it back on. Since toward the end, my old Airport card stopped seeing the wireless network entirely, even when my XP box saw it clearly, replacing the card was still a good idea for me.
    Good luck!

  • Iphone4 to Linksys WRT54G

    Hi there all,
I am trying to sync my Iphone 4 up to my home wireless network - WRT54G.
I am able to access my Linksys details, but for the life of me I don't know what the password is, or where I can find it.  A friend set up my network a few years ago.
Is the WEP key what I am looking for?  If not, how can I find out what my password is?
Any pointers would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Go to Solution.

the default IP address of the router is 192.168.1.1 and to log in to the routers setting's page it will ask you username and PW (unless it was changed by your friend)...
using a pc that is directly connected to the router and internet is working
    username: leave it blank
    PW: admin
go to the wireless settings. and there you will see your WEP
Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is mystery. Today is a gift.

  • Ideas for Connecting Pool Controller to WRT54G

I am trying to connect a Zodiac iAqualink wireless pool equipment controller to my home network (WRT54G) without success. I need some ideas. This is a 802.11b device. My router is set to mixed mode.
    What I have tried:
    1. Set it up as suggested in the instructions: WEP2 security, double checked SSID and password
    2. Set it up without wireless security
    3. Changed channels
    4. Set mode to 802.11b
In all cases the LED on the iAqualink that is supposed to indicate that it is connected to the network illuminates properly, but I can never find the device using EasyLink Advisor.
    Help!!

Are there other wireless devices already working thru your router? Because if that is the case then there might be something wrong with how the Aqualink is connecting to the router. Does you aqualink has an option to connect via the wired connection? Just to verify though if that will work via a wired connection. If it won't work via the wired connection then there might be something wrong with the Aqualink device. You may need to call their tech support to get further assistance.

  • I recently installed the 5.5.3 AirPort Utility update and my airport will no longer connect to the internet.

I recently updated my macbook's AirPort Utility to 5.5.3 and it will no longer connect to wireless networks.  First let me explain everything I have done already, I have reset my router, and tried on other's (my friends and my schools) networks.  I have been able to succesfully connect to my friends wireless (router is made by netgear), but when i try to connect to my network (WRT54G linksys router) and my schools network (im unaware what they use for routers) I am unable to connect, and my AirPort will proceed either state it does not have an IP address and will assign itself one and will not connect to the internet.  It will connect to the network with an IP, but will be unable to connect to the internet with the browser claiming DNS lookup failure.
yes, I have deleted and changed my location,
           deleted the selected service.
           tried resetting my router
           cleared my PRAM / NVRAM
installed the newest firmware onto my WRT54G
           Renewed my DHCP lease
made sure my Configure IPv4 is using DHCP
and theres a few more but i'm forgetting them.
Any suggestions on why the 5.5.3 update might of screwed up my airport?

If everything else is connecting with no issues, I would go into the wifi setting on the iPad and redo the info there, user, password and anything else related to your wifi at your house.
It is possible whatever he reset may have reset something to default setting which will not allow it to connect. If you need too then verify the wifi setting by comparing it with another device setting that works on your home network.
    Good luck

  • Web-based utility will not load on new wet54g ethernet bridge

I just got a WET54g ethernet bridge to connect my bluray player to my existing network (wrt54gs router).  I cannot get the setup cd to recognize the bridge connected to the laptop or the router.  I thought that it would be no problem, just use web-based set-up.  When attempting to access 192.168.1.226 I have to enter the password three times and then a blank page is loaded.  Chat support ended up getting disconnected, so no luck there.  Supposedly some of the steps chat wallked me through updated the firmware through ftp download, but I feel like nothing was done since you can't access the set-up page. Any suggestions are welcome.  I'm running vista if that helps.

Start it from Scratch...Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your WET54G(ethernet bridge), wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your WET54G(ethernet bridge)...Follow the link here to re-configure the WET54G(ethernet bridge)...Also under the configuration type select Static IP Address : For IP Address enter : 192.168.1.226, Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 and save the settings...
After doing these you can unplug the Ethernet Bridge from the router and power cycle your router and the ethernet bridge both...Connect your ethernet bridge to your bluray player and test for active connection...

  • Dup IPs after 1.01.1 flash

    Hello,
I have a WRT54G router that I recently updated to 1.01.1 while trying to add a Linksys Print Server (had to take it back - not bi-directional).  Shortly after the flash I've started receiving duplicate ip address errors on my network.  Rebooting a DHCP client machine at times will be assigned the IP of a different system.  I saw this happen once and it was only an hour or so after the proper owning PC had renewed it's lease on the IP address.
Anyone else seen this problem and is there a way to fix it?
    BRIEF RUNDOWN OF MY NETWORK:
WRT54G v5 Router (main) - Static IP and DHCP Server
BUFFALO WLI-TX4-G54HP Ethernet Converter (acting as a bridge) - Static IP
BEFW11S4 v2 Router (hung off Buffalo Bridge for kids gaming) - Static IP
VARIOUS Printers - Static IP addresses on each
    2 Static IP systems
    4 DHCP PCs
NOTE: DHCP is limited to 20 addresses and none of the static ip addresses are within the DHCP range.

hi....i did face the same issue with a friends router....however the resolution was pretty simple.....all i did was disable the DHCP first....saved settings , power cycled the router ,assigned a static IP to the PC hooked to the router and enabled the DHCP once again

  • Cannot connect to FTP from NetCam thru Router

I have a netcam from another vendor (AirLink SkyIPCam250) that I access thru my home network (WRT54G). I can access the live feed from outside of the network fine. Now I'm trying to auto-post pics from the netcam to my FTP site, which is hosted by GoDaddy.
After setting up the cam with my FTP info, when I try a test post, the netcam reports "can not connect to FTP server".
I've sent messages to the support departments for AirLink and GoDaddy and they indicate the settings should work. Since the netcam is going thru the WRT54G router, I'm wondering if I have to do any special port settings there (or even thru Windows XP firewall) in order to have the camera push images thru the network. When entering FTP settings on the cam, it indicates that it wants to use port 21.
If it matters, I've flashed the latest firmware for the router and camera. I can also access my FTP site from a web browser using the same name/password.
Most of this is new to me. Thanks in advance for any ideas,
    - Tom

If you can access ftp site from computer, then you don't need port forwarding. It is needed to host ftp site. Make sure you have set proper ftp address, and correct user name and password, on camera's setup

  • Second router?

I have an existing wired/wireless home network (WRT54G router acting as gateway to a cable modem). I have both wired and wireless PCs/laptops connecting through this. I have a TV and and a Blueray player that need to also be connected to the internet and it's inconvenient to run an ethernet cable to thatr location. I also have a WRT110 router and was wondering if I could connect the TV and Blueray player (both have only ethernet ports) to the WRT100 and configure it to connect to my existing wireless network. If this is possible I'd need details of the setup.

You cannot connect 2 router to each other wirelessly, to connect 2 routers to each other u need to Run an Ethernet cable from your 1st router to the 2nd router. But now u dont want to run the ethernet cable throughout your home, its better u can go for a Access Point along with a Switch and u can configure your access point in a Bridge Mode.

  • 3d computer connected, browser fails

This is related to my earlier post. I'm trying to add my daughter's Dell laptop to me household network (WRT54GS ver 6) Her Intel PROSet Wireless reports her machine connected to my network with Excellent reception. IE cannot open a net window. Following Ikester's advice, I successfully pinged 192.164.0.1. (4 responses). Since I modified the LinkSys defaults when I set up the network (2 computers so far, daughter's will be the third) and her computer is burdened with a host of profiles no longer in use, I suspect her IDs are not mine. Pinged address above in IE produces "Cannot display web page". What's my next step?

First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Next, if the non-working computer has the Intel Pro Wireless 2200 bg card, this card is known to have connection problems, that were fixed with the latest driver.  Go to the Intel web site, and download and install the latest driver.
In the non-working computer, go to "Profiles"  (sometimes called "Preferred Networks" )  and delete all networks named "linksys".  Also delete any network with your current SSID.  Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.
In the non-working computer, temporarily turn off your software firewall.
Reboot entire system:  modem, router, and computers
Try again to connect wirelessly.  If you still have trouble, go back to "Profiles" and add a profile (SSID, encryption type (if any), and password (if any)) for your current SSID.   Now try again to connect.
If you still have trouble, if you have not already done so, download and install the latest driver for your Intel Pro wireless card (even if it is not the 2200 bg).
If you need more help, please state what type of encryption you are using.

  • Network cable unplugged problem with WRT54G

I just got a WRT54G wireless router recently, and experienced some problems with it. There are 5 notebooks in my network using wireless card and 2 PCs connect to the router through cables. The router is with ver 7.00.1 firmware.
The router is working fine, the problem is sometimes it will show "Network cable unplugged" on my PC, and the whole network will be interruptted, the network will be resumed in few seconds and all machines need to get IP from the DHCP server again. It's quite annoying to be disconnected from middle of the work. I don't know what is the cause, seems like the router is re-reading it's configuration. I have tried to refresh the fireware but with no luck. Someone else got this problem before? anyone has a solution for this? Thanks a lot!
    Regards,
    Leo

Try the following tips to resolve your problem:
Disable the Ethernet network adapter if you are not using it. This applies, for example, when running a WiFi home network with computers that have built-in Ethernet adapters. To disable the adapter, double-click the small Network Cable Unplugged error window and choose the Disable option.
Check both ends of the Ethernet cable connected to the adapter to ensure they are not loose.
Replace the Ethernet cable with a different one to verify the cable is not damaged.
Update the network adapter driver software from the manufacturer's Web site.
Change the Link Speed and Duplex settings (using Device Manager) to use "100 Mbps Full Duplex" or "10 Mbps Full Duplex" instead of Auto Detect.
    Replace the Ethernet network adapter
    Good Luck,
    Ttech

  • WRT54G v.6 - Vista forgetting Network settings but not on XP? - help please :)

Hello everyone! I hope someone can shed a bit of light on this, it's driving me crazy!
I am using a WRT54G v.6 and Vista Ultimate and a dual-boot with XP on my desktop computer. I also have a laptop with Vista Home Premium. I have cable internet. Here's the thing:
Sometime ago I lost my internet connection. A friend with the same router told me to unplug the router for a day and that it'll do the trick. It did... partially.
I pluged it, inserted the installation CD (please keep in mind that I have no router knowledge at all) and everything went fine, until I shut down my computer. At the moment I had connected the desktop and laptop. When I turned the desktop on with Vista, it could not connect to the internet, although the laptop had no problems at all.
I connected the modem directly to my computer and internet was fine, but if I plug it back to the router, nothing happens. So, I had to do the same thing again: unplug for a day, restart the settings and it's a go. I've done that so many times it's not funny anymore
If I put my computer into hybernation, the router/vista works fine, but if i shut it down, I lose my internet connection on Vista.
Has anyone dealt with these before? I'd really appreciate your help, and sorry for the long post
    Edit:
Right now I had to install an update on my desktop. First, I intalled the recent firmware upgrade, reset all settings again and configured the router. Everything was fine. I installed the Windows update, had to reboot and bam! I lost my connection. I'm on the laptop right now.
I can't even access the router on my desktop via 192.168.1.1. I have a limited or no connectivity message. It appears I have 2 networks, both public (I also tried private and nothing). I don't have internet access on none of them, although I did have before rebooting the computer). I don't have the warning icon anymore, tho.
I tried to merge/delete the connections and it "appears" as one of them was deleted, but it's still there. It says: Network 2 (the name of the network) it's in use, and under type says: unmanaged. But still no internet connection on that computer.
After some minutes, I was able to access the router via 192.168.1.1, but still no internet...
jtMessage Edited by jt001 on 04-03-200706:37 PM

Hello Klatch! Thanks for your reply!
Well, thing is that it used to work before. Of course, I'll definately check if an update is available
All these issues began maybe a month or 2 ago. Everything was working flawlessly. One time, I lost my connection and that's where everything got messed up.
My main problem is that I get this "Unidentified Network" in the network and sharing center that seems to be causing the problem, as far as I know.
I connect the router and get the Unidientified Network icon, plus another one. I deleted one, but it was still there. Even if I try to merge them, nothing happens.
I even connected the modem directly and could not connect to the internet for some time, because Vista was still looking for the previous setting (back when the router was working). I had to unplug the modem several times, reboot, etc. I tried so many things that I lost track of what made the computer work again :lol.
I tried to connect the router last night and nothing. The only thing that seems to work is unplugging the router for a long time/resetting it, then Vista will make the connection, but if I restart, the internet it's gone.Message Edited by jt001 on 04-05-200705:31 AM

  • Connecting a wrt54g to an existing wireless network

    Hi,
I'm wondering if it's possible to create a second wireless network by connecting a wrt54g to our existing wireless network?
Our main router is upstairs, connection in the downstairs office is terrible, plus it's being used by a team that would like their own network anyways. Can I plug the wrt54g into the main router, assign it a static external IP and create a second wireless network?
    thanks

great thread toomanydoughnuts, thanks!  all the hours I spend googling for an answer are such a waste when I can post a specific question and a human being answers me back  :-)
I see that what I was trying to do is possible but before I start let me ask your opinion.
My initial goal for a seperate network was to give Router 2 a static external IP and connect our server to router 2 so external users would always be able to access it at the same address in case Router 1 ever had an IP change (I don't have constant access to router 1 and am not supposed to be fiddling with it!)
The secondary goal was to improve the wireless signal for those of us downstairs and I figure having Router 2 down there would provide a nice strong signal.
I have realized now that dyndns can solve my issue with Router 1's IP changing (even if it's once a month it's an issue for remote users accessing our server). Dyndns will re-point our host name to the new IP if it ever changes.
But I still have the issue of a very weak signal in the downstairs office.
Because I'm seeking the simplest, easiest to manage solution as I'm far from a network guru, do you think a better option may be to get a repeater or something like that for our downstairs office to just boost the signal from Router 1? If so, any recommendations?
thanks in advance for your time
Oh, and if I did go the route of setting up Router 2, could I give Router 2 a static external IP address?

  • Can't connect to wireless network with Apple Computers (WRT54G)

    Hi.
I have had a password protected router (WRT54G) for over two years that any pc will connect to if I give them the password.  However, my roommate has an apple laptop and he can't connect, no matter how many times we try.  I just got an ipod touch, and it can't connect to the network either.  We are inputting our password correctly - why can't apple computers connect to my wireless network??
Again, my router is a WRT54G.
    Thanks !!!

Make sure you enter the correct password...To check your Wireless Settings follow this link
If your Wireless Security is WEP then use WEP Key1 and not the Passphrase, make sure to enter a dollar sign on your Apple Computer when you attempt to connect...If your Wireless Security is WPA/WPA2 then use the WPA Shared key and no dollar sign is required...
