NetworkManager daemon starts then immediately kills itself

Hello,
I am running ArchLinux on a Thinkpad T60 and am trying to use NetworkManager to manage my wifi and ethernet. I have the drivers loaded for both as ifconfig -a shows them. I have installed NetworkManager from the kernel.org mirror as well as the GNOME applet for it. However when I attempt to start NetworkManager it with /etc/rc.d/networkmanager start it shows BUSY then DONE as if it is working. However the daemon does not live after that, it just kills itself with nothing left in the dmesg.log or daemon.log. I have all the default settings for this and have setup my /etc/hosts file correctly as well. Both Dbus and Hal are working fine as GNOME launches happily with everything running normally.
Would anyone have any idea why NetworkManager would be doing this?
Thanks in advance

Also, (I wasn't clear from your post), did you add networkmanager to your daemon array in /etc/rc.conf? You should comment out network and add networkmanager like this DAEMONS=(!network networkmanager). And comment out #eth0="dhcp", and INTERFACES=(!eth0 !wlan0). Do a search for networkmanager on the wiki, there is a page devoted to it.

  • PowerPC apps start then immediately quit all the time...

9 times out of 10 a PowerPC app will start and then immediately quit. This happened with 1 GB RAM and it happens with 2 GB. It has happened since day one and I'm sick of it.
On a daily basis I use Word, Excel, Photoshop CS 2, Quicken 2005, Thoth, and a few other PowerPC apps. I cannot find, or do I want to find alternatives to these apps. I like them.
I've repaired permissions, run Disk Utility, reinstalled the 10.4.7 combo updater, et cetera. Nothing remedies this problem.
What could be causing PowerPC apps to almost never run on my brand new $3000 MBP?

Sorry to hear of problems although you may have to end up purchasing Office for Mac 2004 if you don’t have already, and perhaps newer versions of other software favorites. With newer technology, comes new features and updated software to leverage that new technology.

  • Safari RSS starts, then immediately stops!

Brand new PowerBook (running 10.4.2 w/all updates); copied contents of my previous PowerBook using Migration Assistant; when I try to launch Safari RSS it begins to launch but immediately closes, giving me a report form to send to Apple.
I've been using Firefox, but thought I'd give Safari RSS another chance on this new machine. Any suggestions?

    Hi Mark
There are so many things that can give this behaviour.
    • Dirt in Camera (cleaning tape ?)
    • Bad tape with lot's of drop-outs
    • Bad FW-Cable
    • low free space on internal (start-up) hard disk
    • untidy hard disk (Apple Disk Util tool)
    • error in pref file - delete and iMovie makes a new OK one
    • iMovie in PAL-mode and Your Camera in NTSC
    • tape recorded in LP-mode (90min on 65min tape) - Don't - but use SP
    See - lot's of guessings
Exclude those and please report back on progress.

  • FTPSVC/SMTP Starting then Stoping immediately

    Hi,
When i am starting  FTPSVC or SMTP , its starting, then stoping immediately with this messages : -
"Services on local computer started and then stoped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs "
Basically, I am using Samba4 As Domain controller ( Please dont say, Go away as its not Windows Domain controller ) as i dont think its the issues with Samba4 domain controller as this problem only for this server.
    when I added a servername/Administrator into
Local Security Policy - > Local Policies -> user Rights -> log on as a service
    i got this messages :
Failed to save loal policy databasee
I have also tryed to install the patch which is provide for that issues.
however IIS is running fine .
Can any one please help me to find out
what configuration/permission i need to change to make it work ??
( if i remove the server from Domain, its works fine , but  also, there are other server is joined to the same domain controller but they works fine)
    Really appreciated your help.

    Hi alam_2001,
Based on the error message, please navigate to
Run, type Services.msc and click OK. In Services console, please right click those two services and select
Properties. In the service Properties, please:
    Select the
Dependencies tab, then check and make sure system components which this service depended on run as normal.
    In
Log On tab, please check which account it logged on as.
If this issue still persists, please navigate to Event Viewer and check if you can find some related error
    messages.
In addition, based on your description, it seems to be more related to the IIS configuration. I suggest that
you would post your question in IIS Forum. I believe we will get a better assistance there.

    Hope this helps.

  • HT4743 I downloaded a tv episode. When I press play it starts to load then immediately goes back to the episode page. I've tried rebooting my ipad but that doesn't help. I can't get into my account info from my ipad as suggested.

I recently purchased a tv episode from ITunes. It shows that it has downloaded. When I press play it starts to load then immediately returns to the episode page. I have tried rebooting several times.

Basics from the manual are restrt, reset, restore.
Have you tried each of these?

    Hello, Juniorjr2.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This sounds like screen curtain may be enabled.  Screen curtain is a feature that allows display privacy.  To disable screen curtain while VoiceOver is enabled, you can three finger triple tap the screen to disable this feature.  You may need to press the home button once in order to process these steps.  If you wish to disable VoiceOver, see the link in the article below.

By the way, I also updated my Macbook Pro 17" (mid-2009) and it seems to be running fine, though I haven't tried to restart it and log in. I'm afraid I won't be able to get this one to work either if I do.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Make daemons start after boot?

Can I make daemons start after the boot has ended? Netcfg uses about 10 seconds connecting to my wireless network, and the mounting of my windows share (trough fstab, using cifs) takes even longer. Therefore, I'd like to know if there's a way to start netcfg as a daemon and/or also mount my share after I've gotten into Arch and/or X after boot?
Can I use something like .xinitrc for this?
    Last edited by Bennythen00b (2010-12-18 23:30:04)

I tried that, but my windows share won't mount then for some reason. :-/
E: To be a little more specific, I backgrounded "net-profiles" and "network". I assume this doesn't work because whatever executes fstab tries to mount the share and fails before the network has finished connecting, or are daemons queued in the background too?
Anyway, just having "network" backgrounded works rather well, and I only have to wait for my wifi to connect. Not a huge problem, but I'd prefer having it start in the background in some way.

  • Syncing problem, starts then stops... HELP!!!

I recently reformatted my hd and reinstalled itunes. Now, when i go to sync it starts as its supposed to but then immediately stops. I cant figure it out as Ive tried searching for solutions everywhere! I found people having the same problem but it was because they have windows vista 7.0 beta which seems to be their problem. I on the other hand do not have 7.0, i have 6.0 and have never had this problem before the reformat. My iphone is up to date as is my itunes. Please help! PLEASE!

If you watch the progress bar, does it stop during the backup (which comes first) or during the sync process (contacts, photos...)
If it stops right at the start, copy the backup folder located \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\ to a save place. Then delete the backup in itunes/settings/devices and try again to sync.

  • Init: dependency based daemon starting?

note: I saw http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=69086, but i have no idea how the implementation is done (I don't understand Italian )
the current daemon backgrounding feature in rc.conf is pretty cool to save time, but:
    1) you have no feedback if the daemon started successfully or not
    2) due to its lack of finegrained-ness, the speed gains are limited.
for example, this is the DAEMONS array of my home server:
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network @netfs @crond @sshd rpcbind nfs-common nfs-server openntpd @bitlbee @mediatomb @httpd @noip @dnsmasq)
The items at the right (bitlbee, mediatomb, ..) depend on nfs and ntp beind started completely, but ntpd should not have to wait until all the nfs stuff is started.
unfortunately, with the current "linear" syntax there is no way to improve this.
So if there was a way to express "daemon foo can start as soon as daemons (dependencies) bar and baz are started" we can optimize things a bit further.
then we could basically start everything backgrounded as soon as the dependencies are started.
As for problem 1: you could start each initscript in a seprate wrapper function or whatever, which buffers the stdout and stderr. If you start multiple daemons at the same time, scripts could leak output which may look garbled if you see multiple lines of text from different daemons at the same time.  Once the script exited, you write the buffered stdout/stderr and put OK/WARNING thing on the right in place. maybe this is overkill though, most of the initscripts i use give no additional output anyway.  But with this way, you could start multiple daemons at the same time in background, but still collect their return status and show it to the user.
Initing in this way can probably be done with a relatively small code increase, but would provide a slight performance improvement for some use cases.
Is it worth it? I don't know.  Maybe there are even better initsystems which take it a few steps further, but i thought it was a cool idea

Well, you could always create a meta daemon (an init script in /etc/rc.d/ ) which starts a group of daemons.
It's been a while since I used initng as a lancher for archlinux initscript but it is certainly possible. I don't have the modified scripts anymore but it wasn't that hard to modify anyway.
As far as I know the finit-arc is based on fastinit (it doesn't have any dependency tracking):

  • IMac G5 starts up automatically/by itself

Very strange - I recently purchased an intel imac and hooked both imacs up to a internet router via ethernet (to transfer files, etc.). A number of times (seemingly random) the iMac G5 started up all by itself. Since then I have disconnected the G5 from the ethernet connection, but it stills shares the wireless internet connection via airport. Anyway, just now the G5 started up by itself. This has only occurred since purchasing the intel imac and I am at a total loss to explain it. Is there some connection between the 2 computers that's causing this to happen? Does it have to do with the internet connection? Internet and File Sharing are set to "off" in System Preferences.

    Hey Nathan,
You might go into - applications > utilities > terminal - and see if something shows up under the log there.
Otherwise if this is the ALS model you could open it up and look for bad capacitors like here:
    http://jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php
A power supply problem could also cause this. To look inside the ALS power supply you'd need a security Torx.
