Networkmanager KDE4 Plasmoid Issue

Hi,
I have the following issue with kde4 networkmanager.
When I try to connect to a wireless lan it just stays unconnected and there is no sign trying to connect BUT
when I run cnetworkmanager and the Plasmoid is starts working and shows me that I'm connected to WLAN as well as shows my ip address and everything.
I'm wondering about issue with dbus but both clients have similar dbus files just cnetworkmanager works but the KDE4 plasmoid doesn't.
I'll appreciate if someone can help on this.
EDIT: I'm using KDEMOD

The networkmanager applet is not even an alpha yet. Because of its state, we switched back to wicd on chakra - and i recommend the same to you

  • NetworkManager dbus + wireless issue

I still seem to intermittently get this issue with networkmanager and it seems to be related to dbus.  I have no idea why it began working for a couple of days and then stopped working after a restart, but if I edit /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager I can get it mostly-working (with knetworkmanager-svn).
I am using: networkmanager-0.6.5-1, dbus 1.0.2-4, wireless_tools-29pre21-1, knetworkmanager-svn-632905-1, and a broadcom BCM4318 wireless card + ndiswrapper.  This issue seems to occur with the gnome applet as well, but it is less verbose.
Here is the section of NetworkManager we're interested in (I think):
    <policy group="network">
    <allow own="org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo"/>
    <allow send_destination="org.freedesktop.NetworkManager"/>
    <allow send_interface="org.freedesktop.NetworkManager"/>
Notice how I've added the <allow own=""/> line.  If I do not add this, it gives me an error similar to this: 'Connection ":1.19" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo" due to security policies in the configuration file'.  If I restart the important services (dbus, dhcdbd, networkmanager) after changing the file, I no longer get this message, although I do get some possibly disconcerting others like:
    knetworkmanager: Encryption::isValid failed, bad inputs
knetworkmanager: Error: Could not serialize security information.
That security information error above occurs on the first attempt to connect (which fails).  If I wait about ten seconds more and try again, the error disappears and I can connect just fine.
It also seems that others have this problem:
I am primarily annoyed by this issue because 1) my fix doesn't work and I don't know enough about it or its prevalence to warrant filling out a bug report yet and 2) it seems to come and go and I can't for the life of me tell what's making it act like that.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Nick B

*bump*.   For  a little while it would have this strange behavior wherein I couldn't connect the first time (it'd flash the 'working' screen), the second time it would connect and then disconnect in a couple of seconds, and the third time stuck.  After uninstalling and reinstalling, the earlier issue is back - possibly a restart would return me to the earlier behavior, but it is still non-ideal.  I'm hoping someone has a fix or can corroborate by voting for/commenting on this bug: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/7266.  Thanks!

  • NetworkManager wifi/wired issue

    Hello everyone,
Here's the issue I'm having: when I connect a cable to my laptop, I switch off wifi using an applet. It's easy and n ot worth talking about. But the problem is, that after a few moments it switches on the wifi again (this breaks my ongoing downloads, etc.).
How should I forbid NetworkManager automatically switching to wifi, when a cable is connected?
    Thank you in advance!

Even after you turn it off physically ? You should have a physical switch somwhere on the laptop which should disable the wifi physically and than simply will be inexsistent until you enable it agin - this is the short track
otherwise you simply debug both applet and networkmanager and try to understand what's enabling it back, and how can you disable that option, and maybe there are other conflicting applications.
Check also dispatcher.d , it maybe has some script which is causing this.

  • [KDE4] Compositing issue. Screen meshed up

    I've got a problem.
When KDE4 compositon is turned on and video in full screen is playing, if something pops up (PSI popup, or OSD from other programs) the screen becames messed for a second. Random fragments of images. THe same effect when KDE splash screen is active.
    Turning off compositing helps.
Nvidia GF 9400. Tried other drivers - doesn't help. KDEmod 4.2.2-1
Is there any solution except turning the composition off?

I've encountered this problem alot of times. I've always though it was due to a preformance issue since I use the open Source Drivers. Do you use the propietary or the open source drivers. Also, as far as I know turning effects off is the only way.
You should try to use the shourcut provided to do this(Ctrl + Alt + F12), makes it alot faster.

  • Kde4: plasmoid terminology [SOLVED]

    Hi,
    Every plasmoid after 'Unlock Widgets' shows a [what? a control panel?]; the panel in question shows four icons (top to bottom):  (1) something like 'maximize'; (2) something like 'reload'; (3) settings; (4) close;
Well, what are (0), (1) and (2), at least? The correct terms are precious
    P.S.: (1) and (2) doesn't seem to function, that's the trouble...
Last edited by Llama (2009-11-04 07:46:17)

    1) the first (maximize) is a button which needs to be dragged (not just clicked on it)
    2) the second (its not reload) mean rotate (just drag it as you will do for the first button - maximize)!!
3 & 4) settings and close are just click-on-it buttons

  • Networkmanager PPTP DNS issues

I have Arch Linux on my business laptop and use it to connect to Windows PPTP servers at the office. I use a cable connection and get my address by DHCP (172.23.0.0/16 range). The VPN connection is set up successfully, I specified the gateway, username, domain name, company DNS servers and 10.32.0.0/16 route (office network range). When connected, I can use all servers on my company's network by address AND by name.
The problem however, is that I can't use DNS of the network I connect from anymore (172.23.0.0/16).
When connected, networkmanager rewrites the resolv.conf like this and I have both DNS servers in my resolv.conf file, like I think it should be. But it seems like only the first DNS server (company network) is used for DNS queries and that the local DNS servers are not queried when the first DNS server can't fulfill the request.
Any help would be appreciated. If you would need more information, I would be glad to give it to you

  • Arch-sensor , a monitoring kde plasmoid for archers

A kde4 plasmoid for system monitoring, using the superkaramba API
    Requirements:
    -superkaramba
    -droid-sans fonts
    -lm_sensors
    -mesa-demos
    -nvidia-settings
    -wget
As our systems are different, some tinkering of the code could be required for optimal results.
Just unzip the file, modify arch-sensor.theme and repack with zip -r.
Code and API are very simple and straightforward, so it won't be a problem.
GPU info are coded for nvidia cards, using info from nvidia-settings from the nvidia binary blob.
I don't know if ATI or intel provide a tool like that, but eventually tweaking is easy.
Install with plasmapkg -i , remove with plasmapkg -r
    enjoy , grab it Here!

Nice in theory, but if people are building things from source they should know they need the development libraries.  More often than not, I would like those people to wait for someone knowledgeable to create a package for that distro for them.
But if you want to continue on this, I would say take a look at interfacing with PackageKit since the cross distro package work is already done.  All you would need is the list for each one to look for.

  • Kdemod 4.2 with dual head

I want to use dual head setting in kde 4.2 but it has bunch of issues. When in kde4 i issue the command
    xrandr --output VGA --left-of LVDS
, it enable the dual head setup but the resolution defaults to 1024x768 for both my monitor and Laptop. When I change the resolution to the correct ones from the kde4 display setting in control panel, it screws up the dual head setup and the screens starts overlapping.
Has anyone managed to set dual  head on kde4.

    Two weeks late, but anyway...
You can set the position for the second monitor too.
    xrandr --output DVI-0 --pos 1680x0
This works for my setup. The systemsettings xrandr module doesn't, how am I supposed to use that?

  • New User needs Help...

    Hello Everybody!
I am MetalheadGautham, a guy who has been using linux since May 2007, and linux made me what I am - a guy with an attitude, from a n00b who couldn't use his brains thanks to windows. I migrated from Ubuntu 7.04, my first distro, to Ubuntu 8.04 on may 2008 then within a few weeks, I got rid of that horrible piece of bloatware. Then I installed Debian Lenny, and then migrated to Sidux in just a couple of days, when I heard lenny was about to go on a suspended animation soon.;)
I installed arch a week back, since even debian sid was proving too slow for my hardware, and I think its the best linux distro ever. Period. Its so simple to use, everything can be done so very easily, that I think even Ubuntu was much much harder to use than arch. But I still have lots of unsolved issues, since I am still a newbie (depending on how far you stretch the defination of the word "newbie").
    1. Hardware
I have a Pentium 4 "Prescott" 2.66GHz processor (not the HT technology model), 256MB DDR 400MHz RAM, Intel D915GLVG motherboard with onboard Intel GMA 900 Video and RealTek ALC880 Audio. I hope you see that this is certainly not the best system in the world... I run KDEmod on this. So far, except for Firefox hanging, I have found no issues. Any advice on running arch on this ugly baby ?
    2. IceDE
I am trying to create a full DE using IceWM, called IceDE. I want to make lightweight easy to use apps, either simple commandline like nano or curses based terminal apps or light gui apps available for use on this. So far I use EmelFM as file manager, DFM for desktop icons, nano for text editing and xterm for terminal. I need some more apps, mainly a media player. Please suggest a good light weight all-format-supported media player for this environment.
    3. AUR and Pacman
I need a good GUI client for Pacman. I heard of aorut or something. How good is it and is it a native KDEmod app ? And is there a simpler way to install stuff from AUR other than visiting the site each time ? Is there some AUR client ? And does anyone know some good commandline pacman game ?
    4. Konqueror issues
Konqueror can't use WYSIWYG editing mode in vBulletin. If I press and hold the down arrow in a text box, I can't reach the end of the text I am typing. I need some adblock filters for doubleclick, ad.yeildmanager, google, yahoo, etc. Please help. I want to replace firefox completely.
    5. Doccumentation
Can someone please link me to some good .txt files containing well formatted doccumentation I can read with less while in commandline mode ? I need all the doccumentation I can use, since without that as a newbie I can get seriously screwed on this distro. I want one for newbies, pacman, kdemod, aourt, AUR, fstab, rc.conf and most importantly, kernel compiling. Files with formatted coloured text to help see things more clearly will be welcome. And why doesn't arch place the doccumentation files anywhere in the OS after installing ? I had to copy the wiki manually via another live CD to my /home directory in order to finish my configuring.

it's not GUI and it's called yaourt. Fortunately you only need to visit the AUR once and use makepkg to build yaourt. Then once installed you can use yaourt like pacman and install stuff directly from AUR using yaourt in terminal. Yaourt is a wrapper for pacman that gives AUR functionality.
    5. Doccumentation
    You could try
    man man
    man pacman
    man yaourt
    man rc.conf
    man fstab
or how about the wiki? Did you see the links at the top of the page?
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/
yaorut ? I guess thats the one. I don't need GUIs. I just need something better. I am pretty comfortable with commandline.
    rooloo wrote:
    btw,
makepkg, AUR, and ABS are discussed extensively in the wiki.
yes they are, but I need text only version browsable from commandline init 3 using less. And man pages don't make the cut - they are not sufficiently newbie friendly since they lack advices and tips.

    Welcome to the forums MetalheadGautham.
Most WMs will get the best out of your system, including Ice. Openbox is a good choice here at Arch. You'll get tons of helpful advice for that one; Just about everyone loves Openbox here. I've used E17 on a machine with far lower specs than yours with excellent results. In fact, it's all I use on both of my computers. Just don't use the default theme, you'd be at risk of random vomiting!
As far as a media player goes: Xine is very lightweight and can play most formats. Mplayer and VLC are a bit heavier but play more formats, and both will do well on machines less powerful than yours. MPD is a great choice for music. I use Sonata as a front end and love it. The combination is extremely lightweight.
IceWM is simply THE LIGHTEST I have ever seen. It uses lesser ram than fluxbox which uses lesser ram than openbox. Along with that, its got great features - flag+space to run a command of your choice, a network monitor, a cpu load monitor, a tray, workspaces, easy to edit menus, etc. Its simply THE best. Thats why I didn't install the LXDE based OpenBox and decided to create my own IceDE just for the fun of it.
I have been thinking of Xine MPlayer and VLC, but I need something commandline. I remember that launching vlc via (I guess) ncurses-vlc or something launches the ncurses version. I don't know the same for MPlayer and Xine. Which uses the least resources while in commandline ? And I don't want mpd since I want to keep things as simple as possible, with ONE APP PER TASK approach.
mcmillan wrote:Since you asked about a gui app and yaourt isn't what you're looking for you might want to look at shaman. It's made by the same people involved in making kdemod, and they've done a nice job of integrating it with kde4.
Sounds good. But I doubt I will be using it most of the time since I love working from init 3. Is there a (n)curses client for pacman, the way aptitude exists for apt-get ?
Square wrote:When it comes to hardware, you're ok on everything. I would suggest upgrading your RAM if you get a chance however, for 256MB could put you at a snag every once and a while (Especially if using a DE). About 512MB is perfect IMO, for a basic desktop, and could greatly improve overall performance.
I am thinking of getting myself another gig of ram on 2nd of august (the sunday). Will it help run KDE4 without issues ?
And will my onboard gpu become better if I up its vram from the current 12mb to 192mb ? (after adding a gig ofcourse).

    I presume you read this?
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Networkmanager#KDE4
I just installed this recently and am using nm flawlessly on my desktop.  I just followed the wiki.
After installing the applet (pacman -S kdeplasma-applets-networkmanager) as it said in the wiki I was able to merely right click on it to get a menu to set up everything.  I'm using the standard KDE4 though.
I'm guessing you might have this one installed since you state kdemod?
There is new version of KNetworkManager in [kdemod-core] providing system tray icon and configuration:
    # pacman -S kdemod-networkmanagement-knetworkmanager-kde4

  • Kde and networkmanager issues

Since recently I have had issues with kde (4.6.3) and networkmanager.
First, the latest version of networkmanager (0.8.998-3) and the latest version of the networkmanagement plasmoid does not work, while it looks like they should, nothing happens when trying to connect. That could be due to permissions and something consolekit-related? In any case, just updating does not work (for me at least), so I had to put those packages on hold.
Second, since today, the networkmanagement plasmoid claims that my wlan inteface was "disabled by hardware", and thus does not show it as connected even though it is, and does not show a list of accesspoints to connect to.

Any hints to solve those problems would be greatly appreciated!
-- mod edit: read the Forum Etiquette and only post thumbnails http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/For … s_and_Code [jwr] --

After upgrading two days ago, my network stopped working. Well, First I should say that I got a black desktop upon loading, some things still worked though. Yakuake I could use to launch programs. When I launched systemsettings and unticked enable desktop effects, I got the default background wallpaper, but no panel or folder view. I track down the offending package to kdeplasma-applets-networkmanagement-1:git20110524-1. I downgraded, and I got my desktop back. However, the KDE plasma applet now reported 'invalid state' for both my wireless and wired interfaces. I found the offending package for that to be kdebase-workspace-4.6.3-2. Downgrading to kdebase-workspace-4.6.3-1 solve the problem. So I had a double whammy here with this upgrade. However, though my main user account seems stable enough, I notice some crashes with konqueror w/ webkit, and systemsettings in desktop themes. I am particularly having serious desktop and software crashes with other user accounts, far more than my main user account. I tried deleting .kde4/ in the other accounts but it has not stabilized them. My main user account is usable, the others not so. My main system is a Sony Vaio w/ Radeon HD 4200 graphics. Before the upgrade, my system and all accounts were stable...

  • KDE4.3: wicd versus networkmanager

    Hi,
i am running KDE4.3 (1 [extra] and 1 kdemod) and am deciding on a networking application.
I thought i'd go with WICD since it is lighter and has no GTK dependencies on KDE, but for some bizarre reason on both my pc's it will *never* connect with DHCP to a wired network on the first attempt. When I manually run 'dhcpcd' it connects like a charm.
On the other hand when I run the networkmanager daemon with the nm-applet tray icon, connectivity is perfect and really fast. Although it gives me this horrible GTK popup when it connects to the network. On fedora 11's networkmanager (NetworkManager-0.7.1-8.git20090708) you can turn these popup notifications off ...... will 'we' get that version as well by tthe way?.
Why would networkmanager work perfectly and wics make me restart dhcpcd before connecting? I'd use netcfg but I am often underway and connect to different networks all the time and i have found wired/wireless switching a bit cumbersome with netcfg.

Llama wrote:One probably has to do something special to make wicd misbehave. No, by itself and of itself it doesn't mismanage connections
Wicd seems to have mixed reviews.  It works great for some people and is the answer to all their issues, but some people just have problem after problem after problem with it.  Personally I don't like the way it handles multiple WAPs with the same ESSID; that's why I am using plain ol' netcfg now.  So, no, I would not agree that one has to do anything special to make wicd misbehave.  (Maybe it just doesn't like me.)

  • Zen kernel and networkmanager issue?

i'm looking for some input on this small issue. i'm running the zen kernel on my desktop, and my eee 900A. i use networkmanager on the desktop, and wicd on the eee. and when i shut down either of them, those daemons fail to stop.
i just booted into the vanilla arch kernel on the desktop, and networkmanager stops just fine when i shut that one down. so i'm hoping, if i post my kernel config for the desktop, someone may be able to shed some light on what i'm missing thats causing this issue? i'm sure its the same thing causing it on both machines, and the desktop can recompile the kernel in 3 minutes, so trial and error is no problem on it, i just need a starting point is all
also, its only at shutdown that networkmanager or wicd don't stop, i can stop them manually just fine at any time...wierd ish?

When I install an old xf86-video-ati package from 27.02.2010, everything works. So the problem seems to be the new ati-driver.

  • Lenovo Flex2 15: NetworkManager issue with WiFi in Gnome3 & battery

I've installed Arch on a Lenovo Flex2 15 and most of the things are working nicely. However 1 issue with NetworkManager is driving me nuts.
I have the following system in use:

    Processor Intel Core i3-4010U CPU @ 1.70GHz x 4

Whenever I connect to a wireless network with the network applet in the top right of the screen, it keeps "connecting" even though it has already connected. This does not happen when I disable WiFi and use the cable. The connected cable icon is show properly.

    I have disabled netctl
    $ sudo systemctl disable netctl
How can I make the applet show that the connection has been succesfully established?
Bonus question is that on Windows the laptop can run for hours, but in Arch it's drained considerably faster. I also have a Dell XPS L502x and since Linux was installed the battery died pretty quickly because it drained so fast and we had to charge it constantly. That laptop is left with a 15 minute charge at 100%. The new Lenovo somehow takes 3 hours to charge from 0 to 100% and drains in about the same time. The same applet in the top right also keeps saying "Estimating...". I have installed PowerTOP and ran a diagnostics. Is it save enough to apply everything suggested?

The Red cross usually appears when the battery has failed.
If you already tried the hard reset and the drivers update, then there doesn't seem to be much that you can do.
Get it repaired from Lenovo while you are still in warranty, that would be my suggestion.
