NetworkManager unable to join new networks

Hey Guys,
I am not sure exactly when this happened, because I only noticed it when I tried to join a new wireless network, which I don' do too often, but NetworkManager doesn't seem to allow me to join new networks anymore.
When I click on a new network in the applet in Gnome 3.6 it just does nothing.  No error, no ask for authentication.  If it sees a network that it has connected to before, like my home network, it connects.  If there are two such networks in range, it will allow me to change between them, but again when I click on a network I have never connected to, it just does nothing.
When I try to turn of wireless, via the button in the applet, the button changes to off, but the wireless stays up.
If I go into networking in the Gnome settings, it does not allow me to select another network at all, it just ignores my mouse clicks...
I am not sure what is going on, it is very strange.  All my packages are fully upgraded.
Anyone else having this issue, or any ideas what might be causing it?
Thanks,
David

Yes I have.  Quite some time ago actually.  In fact, I know for sure that it was working about a week ago, I went to a new coffee shop an used their wireless, and I was definitely using systemd then.

When I try to connect to the wi-fi net work at my work place on my new iPad 3  I get a message, "unable to join the network". I have verified the password, so I know it is correct. I know the wi-fi works, because I can connect at home. I have already tried the following:
turn wi-fi off and on again
did a hard restart of my iPad
reset network connections back to factory settings
verified wi-fi is working as my computer accesses internet without issue.
verified that my software is up to date.
    Does anyone have more suggestions?

    Couple of suggestions.
First, many companies have a gateway on their networks that block non approved devices.  I work in such a place.  You might check with an IT guy , and see if they have a block in place.
Second, the message you are getting means that you have not negotiated the security settings.  So either the password is wrong ( case sensitive), or, in some cases, they want a network key as opposed to your normal password.
Again, if you can find one, talk to an IT guy and see if he has some suggestions.

  • I have a new iPad 2 which will not connect to my wi fi despite a new router being installed. When I tap my network name (which is with TalkTalk) the message comes up "unable to join the network TalkTalk etc...)

I have a new Apple iPad2 which will not connect to my wi fi despite a new router.  When I tap the correct address it comes up with the message "Unable to join the network TalkTalketc... It does connect in other peoples' houses . Am I right in thinking that the trouble is with TalkTalk?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • When i try to connect my new ipad to my home wifi i get a message saying unable to join the network BTHub and my only option is to dismiss

when i try to connect my new ipad to my home wifi i get a message saying unable to join the network BTHub and my only option is to dismiss

If you are having WiFi problems it is necessary to isolate whether the problem is with your network or your iPad. Note: Do NOT consider your network to be blameless if some other devices can connect to it.
First, test your iPad on some other networks: a friends, Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, etc.
If it works well there then the problem is probably with your network. Try restarting your WiFi router by removing power for 30 seconds. If that does not help check for a firmware update for your router. If none exists which corrects the problem consider replacing the router.
If your iPad does not function well on other networks it possibly has a hardware problem. Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple store for evaluation. They can provide a replacement if your iPad is bad.
If you need more help please give the make, model, and version of your WiFi router and how you have it configured.

  • New iPod Unable to join the network after inputting password

    Got my iPod this am..
looked too good to touch no pun intended.
I went through the instructions, interrupted with an offer to update_, which I did.
I then saw that the iPod was off line and went to set up the connection.
I do have a Time Capsule but I just use it as an external drive, I use Ethernet connections between it my Netopia router/modem which provides my Wi Fi for another computer.
I have a WPA-PSK security on the Netopia.
My Wi Fi shows up on available networks, I am asked for my password but then I get a message "Unable to join the network"
I must admit that my password is long (and a bit racy) my fingers a bit big, but I know that I have got it right on at least a few occasions.
I have tried entering the details on "Other network" with the same result.
Could my WPA-PSK be a problem?
I would be most grateful for any suggestions.
Various forms of this problem have appeared on this forum, but I think mine is a bit different.
    Thank you.

    Thank you.
    Went through that pretty well.
Finally solved it in 2 steps.
    1. reset my modem/router to factory settings.
Odd situation, wireless settings, but dependent on ethernet connection.
    2. read a post from Hong Kong re strange network settings.
On his advice, into network, changed location from Automatic to one of my choosing.
    Bingo! everything came good.
Totally wireless connection. iPod jumped to it. Isn't it great when everything comes together?
I still wonder why it didn't take the signal from the WiFi part of my Modem/Router?
Probably just as well as it sorted my Time Capsule connections out, probably for the first time since I bought one back in early 2008, and its recent replacement when it joined the epidemic of sudden death recently.
    Cheers

  • How can I change the "Ask to join new networks" option using a terminal command?

We are currently switching to a new wireless network throughout our school district and I have pushed commands to connect to the new and remove the old. However, any Macs that have "Ask to join new networks" enabled are jumping over to our unsecure guest network, even if that network has been removed from the list of Preferred Networks. So far the fix has been to remove the guest network from the list of Preferred Networks and then disable Ask to join. The only issue I'm running into now is I have been unable to find a terminal command to change this setting. Once I have the command I can write a script and send that out to all of the Macs.
So is there a way to disable "Ask to join new networks" using command line?

    sed -i "" 's/Prompt/DoNothing/' /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

  • IPhone 5 wi-fi "unable to join the network"

My new iPhone 5 is my first iPhone and I've had it about a week.  I'm still in the process of setting it up but cannot connect to my home (secured) wi-fi.  I've been reading other Apple forums and Google suggestions and it appears this is a known Apple issue?  My phone came with iOS 6 installed so I have no update available.  I've turned off my router and shut off my phone, rebooting both but I still get an error message when entering our wi-fi password:  "unable to join the network".  I've turned off cellular and re-tried wi-fi to no avail.  I am NOT impressed with my first Apple product.  What a hassle.  Does anyone have any other suggestions to try or am I stuck waiting months for an Apple fix?

There are a couple of things that you can try. First, try disabling the security on your wifi network and see if the phone will connect. Check the type of security you are using. Some have reported the iPhone reacts differently to some wifi security. Check to see if there is a firmware update to the router. This is usually the biggest culprit of the bunch. Once routers have been updated and restarted, troubles disappear.

  • Unable to Join the network ...

I've seen similar posts with the same title but none of these solutions work for me. The problem is that I can not connect to my home Wi-Fi network. Following are the details:
    - I have a new iPod Touch with OS 2.2.1
    - My wireless router is an Airport Extreme running 7.4.2
    - My wireless security is WPA2 Personal
    - I have no problem connecting other devices such as Mac laptops and desktops so I know the correct password and the usual settings
    - I have also been able to connect my Touch to another wireless network with WPA2 security! This leaves me to believe there must be some incompatible setting on my Airport Extreme.
    - I have gone through the various trouble-shooting steps on Apple's support site, to no avail. I have reset both the Touch and the Airport many times
    - The Touch can see my network but when I enter the (correct) password I get the error "Unable to Join the Network ..."
Any help would be appreciated! I can certainly take my Touch to my local genius bar, but that won't help if the problem is with my Apple wireless router.

If you can see your network, then you are at least not making the same mistake as many AE users - leaving the router broadcasting in N mode only.
Are you using anything like MAC address filtering on your network? Is DHCP on? The easiest thing you can try is a) reset the touch network settings; b) log back into your network using Settings > WiFi > Other network and re-entering your network name (case sensitive), security, and password (also case sensitive).
Try that and let us know what happens.

  • Unable to join my network

I just got a new iTouch 3rd generation. I'm trying to set it up to my wi-fi. When I try to log on the touch, I get a message that states "unable to join the network". what can I do to get it to join?

Yes. My mistake... My router needed some time to identify the iPod... And I guess I was getting to anxious... It finally identified it, and now it connects. Thanks.

  • 'unable to join the network...' wifi network error ! please help, 'unable to join the network...' wifi network error ! please help

im on pay as you go.. still trying to set up wifi to my home network.. im putting in the password (sky broadband) and i keep getting the message
    Unable to join the network...
driving me crazy now - please help !

    Other possibilities:
Your router firmware is out of date. Check the manufacturer's website for an update
You have MAC (Media Access Control) filtering enabled on the router, that restricts access to "known" devices and the new iPhone is not on the table of known devices
Your router has a setting limiting the number of simultaneous allowed devices
Your routers SSID ("name") is still the default (e.g., LINKSYS, DLINK, NETGEAR, etc). Your phone has encountered other routers with the same name as you have traveled, and the phone is confused as to which router is the real one. If your router's name is still the default you should change it.

  • HT5569 When I attempt to choose the wi fi network I set up my iPhone message says "unable to join the network."  It's my network!

Recently, my iphone 4s lost connection with the wifi network I set up on my imac desktop.  The message I receive is "unable to join the network..."
Can anyone offer a solution to this problem?  Thanks!

Oh, so the problem has nothing at all to do with the iPhone ... it is that you cannot remember the network password!  No wonder the iPhone cannot join the network.
Why not simply destroy the network and set up a new one with a password you remember?

  • TS1398 unable to join the network

Just received new iPhone 5. It sees local networks but keeps giveing me the "Unable to join the network". How do I mannually join the network? Or reset the individual network to allow me to put in another password. The first time I set it up I entered the wrong password and not it will not let me put in another password.
    iOS 6 and iPhone 5

I was unable to join the network on my iPhone 5 as well and it turned out that I had incorrectly entered the password (fat fingers). My network was working fine on my other iDevices. Yes, you'll need to reenter the network password again and to do that:
    1) Go to WiFi under Settings
    2) Select the blue arrow at the right of your networks name under 'Choose a Network..."
    3) At top of page select "Forget this Network"
    4) Choose "Forget"
    5) Go back to WiFi
    6) Choose your network.
    7) Reenter Password!

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Unable to join the network on iPhone 5

My phone was using IOS 6.0 when this first started happening. I was able to join a public network (i.e. church, hotel). It connected the first time without problems. Then another time later I was unable to. I got the "unable to join the network" message. The phone can see the network.
I've tried several attempts. Tried the following:
    - forget network (does not give this option anymore)
    - turning wifi on and off
    - reset network settings
    - resetting the phone by holding the buttons for 10 seconds
I am able to connect to my home wifi without any problems and my work wifi, and possibly others.
My wifes phone is identical to mine and she is able to connect to the church's wifi.
I even tried the update to IOS 6.1 - same result.
Since these are public routers, I don't have the option to reset their hardware.
    Suggestions?

Take it back and have it replaced as it is a hardware problem. I had the same problem with my iPhone 5 bought in July 2013 direct from the Apple Store and went thro hundreds of blogs to try & fix it but had no luck whatsoever. The only way I got it to work was to turn off the security on my router. This wasn't a viable option long term as well as the majority of other places that offer Wifi also use secure wif networks. There appears to be a problem with some batch of iphone 5's ( as per research online) not accepting the WPA 2 personal security settings due to a faulty chip or antenna using the 2.4GHz settings? Quality control must be a problem in their production line?
Also if you switch to the 5Ghz settings on the router this seemed to work for me but then my daughters couldn't use their iPhone 4s wifi as they don't support the 5Ghz range. Book an appointment to see a Genius at the Apple store and get them to replace it if it is still new and in warranty. I expalined the problem that it would not work on a secure network even though it would work in the Apple Store as it they have unsecured wifi network in store. They agreed to replace it and my new iPhone 5 works fine at home on the same router / Wifi WPA 2 Personal setting that the original didn't!
Save yourself the massive headache and just get it replaced as glad I did!

Add me to the list. . .and it happened right after the upgrade to 4.2.1. . .
Coincidence or just just a factor of wear and tear. I've tried 3 calls to Apple and they say the phone needs to be replaced.
A bunch of youTube videos watched and instructions followed to no avail.
It seems that the wireless portion of the circuit board connection is prone to cracking in the iPhone. I'm finding references to this gremlin dating all the way back to 2008. I'm wondering if there is a connection with high swings in temperature of surroundings. One clue to whether cracking exists on Circuit board connections is to pop your phone into a freezer for about 10 minutes and see if this permanently or temporarily allows the phone to be able to connect. . .
The only successful fix I've seen is reflowing the Circuit board by putting it in the oven but that takes a couple of shots of good vodka before seriously trying that. . .There are plenty of Google links on both the preparation and the fix. . .8^]
