Neutral desktop workspace / background in CS3

When I used PS CS3 on my Windows machine, it would auto put a gray background on the desktop when PS launched. I like this b/c it covered up all other applications that were open. On my MAC - it opens just the top menu bar and the tool bars but everything else shows. When I open a new doc, it opens up a window that sits over the other windows / apps. I realize I can hit F to change the b'ground to gray / black, BUT this enlarges the entire doc window. I want to see several individual docs open and be able to move them around on the gray background at any given time. Please advise if you have a solution.
THANKS!

There is no application frame in CS3. CS4 is the first version to have an Application frame on the Mac. the majority of Mac users do not like the Application Frame as it allows us to see the other windows of the other apps we are working with and just click between them.
What most of us do is have a gray background an RGB gray of 192,192,192 is best. I have a variation on a solid gray background by turning one of the shoshy Apple backgrounds grayscale then returning to RGB and adjusting it as close to the 192,192,192 as passible.
the other thing you can do is press the F key once puts you in Maximise mode, twice puts you in Full screen mode, three times is Full screen mode with a black instead of gray, and four times back where you started.
If you want an Application Frame I suggest you upgrade to CS4.

  • How to un-fill workspace background, PSE 8 for Mac

I just bought v. 8 for Mac, and there is no checkbox in Prefs to get rid of the 'fill workspace background', its keeping me from using v. 8, as I cannot see my desktop.
Here is a screenshot to show what is wrong,

If you can help me get rid of this annoying thing, I will be very happy to use the new version,
    Thank you,

    Hi Barbara,
Thank you!   Weve been struggling with this, they sure fooled me by changing the way to do it.
I would think that Fill Workspace would be better working than Application Frame, as it sure isnt a frame in my book.
But you saved the day for us, as you always do!
2 more interesting things, when I use this forum with Firefox 3.5.5 for Mac or Opera 10.10, when I click Post Message, I get an error message that there is no body to the message, but found that using Safari is the fix for that one.
And Adobe forums would not recognize my old username, email, Adobe ID #, nor my password on this new Mac. I couldnt figure that one out, as it works fine on my old Mac, but this new one, whew, I had to re-sign up. But I am the old Jane from years ago from Cape Cod.
And we have a new Yellow Lab, a girl named Lilly.
    Thank you again!
I will post the answer on our classroom forum immediatly.

  • Does the Fill Workspace Background function still exist in any capacity in Photoshop Elements 12 (Mac version)?

Does the Fill Workspace Background function still exist in any way?
I could make it such that I could see my desktop (or whatever was open behind my file) when I was using Elements 6.
    Thanks and best.
    (Mac Version. Elements 12)

Hey, thanks kindly for the assistance.
    That is highly disappointing.
Do you happen to know if the feature remains for PS CC? I have CS5, too, and this feature exists, I wonder if it has continued in this line...
    Thanks again.

  • Workspace Background missing CS5

Can anyone assist with the following?
I am running CS4 on a mac pro. I have recently downloaded the trial version of CS5. The installation appeared to have installed correctly, indeed it operates quite normally with one exception ....
I can see my desktop through what should be the workspace background. I have all the CS5 menus in the correct places ie at the top of the screen, the tools to left and the palettes to the right but the centre working area is completely transparent so much so that I can see any open programs running. In short if I open CS5 and do nothing at all the workspace background is missing. If I open an image and size it accordingly CS5 appears visually quite normal until I close the image when the desktop can once again be seen.
I have tried resetting the workspace. I have tried all the pre loaded workspaces each provides the same problem. I have 'Googled' this issue without success.

Nice to meet you. My first Mac was a IIcx. Is that "long-time" enough?
I'm fully capable of understanding when marketing mumbo-jumbo is being pushed. But I'm more inclined to believe an actual Photoshop developer than groundless conspiracy theories from someone in a forum. Why would Adobe need to market this feature? No reasonable customer is going to return a Photoshop Mac license, return their Mac and go back to using Windows because they are susprised by being able to see through to the desktop. Adobe has nothing to gain from this feature, except what John Nack described.
UIs are not designed to cater to an imaginary mass migration. UIs are designed to improve productivity.
To think Adobe is trying to help a migration from one platform to another is insanity. The relationship between Apple and Adobe is no better than the relationship between Microsoft and Adobe. Adobe does not care what platform you use. They do not sell OS's.
You clearly did not read Nack's full post or else you would have noticed the discussion of apps outside the Adobe realm. There are plenty of Mac apps that use the full screen... even before OSX. Kai, anyone? If you are so put off by this idea, you may want to invest in incontinence apparel prior to upgrading to Lion, which will offer even more fullscreen apps.
A return tip... just because people might read your posts... doesn't mean you are in any way believed.

  • How do I change the workspace background color?

    Hi all,
I need to change the workspace background color from the

    Any ideas!
    Thanks in advance, Pedro.

Sorry, but there's no way to change it from the default gray.

  • Hide desktop in background?

in OS 9 there was a checkbox in the General Controls panel to "Hide Desktop in Background" - the desktop picture would remain, but all the icons would disappear.
is there any way to do this in OS X?

    506/2952
    --> Quit the Finder.
To add a "Quit Finder" (⌘Q) in the Finder menu, you can use OnyX, TinkerTool or such an utility, or enter this Terminal command:
defaults write com.apple.finder QuitMenuItem -boolean true;killall Finder
To remove it, use this command:
    defaults delete com.apple.finder QuitMenuItem;killall Finder
(but why would you remove it?)
The Finder is like any other application: it will reopen by clicking its Dock icon, and it will stay closed while using other applications.
I don't know of a way to achieve the same OS 9 behaviour without quitting Finder.

  • Allow reference images to be placed in the workspace background

This isn't a "fix" or anything, just an idea. I'm not sure how you would interact with these images (zoom, etc), but it would be very helpful to be able to place images around the canvas in the actual workspace background. Especially when you're in full screen mode, with the gray area stretching all the way to the edges. This would be a great asset to people using the program from illustration, and would give the feel of actually taping up reference around the artwork. That area isn't used for much at the moment. I'm surprised Adobe hasn't utilized it as a kind of "behind the canvas" pinboard or color mixer or something.

Not an un-interesting proposal – though I wonder what it would mean programming-effort- and file-size-wise.
Personally I’d rather see a feature like »layer as guide« where a Layer’s pixel content on the canvas can be kept visible while working in Photoshop but would appear neither in the Preview and flattened copies nor be accessible in layout applications.

  • Conky on only one desktop/workspace. is it possible?

    Hi Everyone,
Just playing around with conky today. I am wondering if it is possible to have conky appear on only one of the desktops/workspaces. This is for openbox but don't think it would matter. I have four desktops/workspaces and only want it on desktop1. I can't seem to find a definitive answer.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    http://conky.sourceforge.net/config_settings.html
    look at the option "own_window_type"
Also, have a look at the rc.conf of openbox. Everything you need should allready be there, in the following section:

  • Where's my workspace background?

    Hi
Have just switched over from CS2 on a PC to CS2 on an iMac (OS X 10.5.2, 2.4GHz Intel, 3GB RAM)
When I start up the application (before I open any documents), I have no grey background... so all I see is the title bar at the top, and whichever palettes are floating in my workspace. However, the rest of the screen is transparent, so I can see everything open on the desktop beneath Photoshop, which is most off-putting (and too easy to click on).
Once I open a document, it appears as another floating window, and to lose all of the distracting applications underneath on my desktop I would have to press 'F' to get my grey or black background.
But on the PC version, I'm also used to having a general grey background to the application itself, irrespective of images being open (and also when the image is being viewed in 'window' mode). Is this a Mac thing, or is there a box I can check somewhere that gives me a neutral background all the time?
    Hope this makes sense!
    Cheers
    Giles

Two other options for hiding the desktop are Desktopple Pro which does have a small cost but can be set up to automatically hide the desktop when applications are launched as well as having a bunch of different presets for colors, make the menu bar fade to obscurity etc. For example I have Photoshop launch and the desktop becomes a 60% gray. I have iChat launch and the desktop becomes a slightly warm white because I use video chat and the light from a 30" monitor is all my web cam needs.
    http://FoggyNoggin.com/desktopple
(There's also a free version of Desktopple)
A new entrant to the field which I've started loading is called Isolator and simply toggles on and off from the menu bar. It completely covers the desktop to isolate your application and has the additional benefit of hiding the dock.

  • Workspace background color : how to change it ?

    Hello,
Is there a way to change the color (a more dark grey) of the background color of the workspace ? I find the one used by PSE4 (and previous versions) too light. I would prefer a more dark grey, like the one used by Photoshop CS2 (and if this one is good, why not the same in PSE4 Mr Adobe ?).
    Best regards,

    > The default colour is an entirely neutral grey
No... for me, a neutral grey is a 50% grey, all backgrounds are about 80% grey (very light).
Kenneth : OK, but it don't works for quick fix and to for the organizer... only for standard edit...

  • Setting up a uniform workspace background for progs like Photoshop and Word

I am new to the wonderful world of Macs having been dancing with the PC devil for too long.
When using Photoshop, in the PC world, when opening any image, the background to the workspace is a uniform grey. On my shiny new Mac, the background to any workspace is transparent. What this means is that my photoshop images "float" over what ever stuff is still open on my desktop and this can be extremely distracting.
When I open Word (yes the Mac Word), I also get the same transparent background workspace.
Is there a way I can set my Mac so that when I open up Photoshop (and any other program that can have multiple objects of different sizes open at once) so that the workspace default background is some sort of uniform grey and not the clutter of the other programs that are open on my desktop?
Thanks, and sorry if this is a really obvious question.
    Chris

You could select a nice desktop picture (Desktop & Screensaver in the System Preferences) as your background and then with Photoshop or whichever program that your are using as the topmost application you can select "Hide Others" from the Photoshop (or whichever) menu and all the other apps that you have open will be hidden and all you will see is the desktop in the background.

  • How to block the desktop picture /background from changing?

Since I have the Magic Mouse, some time my background changes the desktop photo
It happens when I move a photo in iPhoto or even when I move it on the desktop: I guess it happens
with the combination of the mouse and my movements with the fingers on the mouse itself
Never happened before. Every system preferences has a lock but the desktop.
Any good idea would be much appreciated : )

as you say there is no lock in that preference pane. you can do the following. set the desktop background as you want. in finder go to home directory/library/preferences. select the file com.apple.desktop.plist and enter command+i. in the resulting popup check the box "locked". this file contains preferences for desktop background and locking it will prevent any changes to the desktop background until you unlock it.

  • IPhoto slideshow reveals partial desktop in background

When I view a slideshow with my display (resolution is 1360x768), iPhoto doesn't fully blacken out the background. I can see my desktop in a vertical strip down the right, about 100 pixels wide. Is this because IPhoto will not display properly at this resolution?

No, of course not. But doesn't iPhoto have the capability to display in 16:9 without stretching, AND filling the entire screen?
Just to be clear, I'm not talking about the black background behind the slideshow photos. My problem is that the black area doesn't fill the entire screen. There's an area on the right where I can see my desktop and icons.

  • CS4 Workspace ist like CS3?

    Hello,
i saw such screens in the net, which show the new photoshop CS4 extended edition.
    http://cybernetnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/photoshop-cs4-1.jpg
I liked, that the whole software is now one window, and not like in CS3 that there are a lot small windows - it´s confusing sometimes using spaces in Mac OSX Leopard.
So I bought the update to CS4, but what I´ve got is not like on the screenshot before. I also have a lot of windows like in CS3.
You can see a comparison of my screenshot to the screenshot, which I posted before. In my Screenshot I don´t have the "close", "minimize" and "maximize" buttons in the upper left edge (near the photoshop icon) as you see here:
    http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/697/bild1in7.jpg
And normaly I use Photoshop in "Full screen mode with menu bar" and if Photoshop is in background it looks very bad, as you can see here:
    http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/7794/bild2sd6.jpg
And if I use the new function to arrange documents it normaly should be in one window, but I have a lot of seperated windows next to each other.
    Strange thing, but why that??
    Bg

What you see, and how the windows are arranged, in CS4, depends on if you have the application frame turned on or not and if you use tabbed documents or not and if you are looking at the documents all asembled in one screen or not.
