Never Backedup Library

iTunes has been working at my computer for the past month, but for some reason it won't open today. I get an error message that says: "iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall iTunes." I haven't backup up my library though, so I'm afraid it'll disappear iTunes is reinstalled. What should I do?

Open the Terminal in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN.

  • Library Items won't Update!!

Argh, I've broken my menu for my website, which is a library item. I was getting an error when I validated one of the pages, and found it was an issue with my list not being properly nested within the library item's html. I thought I'd be smart and add a doctype to the library item, so that I could validate it on it's own and pinpoint the problem.
Apparently, the doctype addition was added into all of my pages that contain the library item. Now I can't seem to easily get rid of it! I changed my menu's html to get rid of the doctype, but this change is not reflected when I update all pages. I go to Modify>Library>Update Pages... and choose to update the entire site. Nothing happens! The doctype is still in all of my pages that contain the menu, and it breaks the page (nothing shows in the Design view window.)
Please help! I really don't want to have to delete and reinsert the menu on every page of my website. : (
Here's an example, with the doctype error in the library item "menu-multilevel.lbi":

Can you do a Find & Replace in the Source Code (Ctrl+F) for this line?

  • Templates & Library items - best practice

I've been having a bit of a heated discussion about how
templates and library items should be used on medium to large
    websites.
I'm of the opinion that you should have 1 template (or as few
as possible) and any differences be managed with Library items.
My colleague's argument is you should have a different
template for each section, so for example 1 for the news, 1 for the
features section (for magazine sites) so that if you have a banner
section wide you change that template, as opposed to the way I'm
used to which would be 1 template with multiple library items in
the editable regions of the template, my reasoning for this is the
large amount of html used for each template (like rollovers) can
become inconsistent when there's more than one template. Like if
you change something site wide you have to remember to change all
of the templates, if you do this with a simple copy past DW can
still make corrupt code if you use multiple templates.
So basically I was wondering if there was a standard or best
    practice way of doing this.
    Thanks

Your colleague is mistaken IN MY OPINION. I think you are on
    the right
track *unless* your section pages are *SO* different in
    layout that you
cannot conveniently include all of the
    alterations/permutations in a single
template page. Further, my current workflow is to rely
    heavily on
server-side includes within template pages, as described here
Templates do make your life much easier. I use the following
    scheme....
First, I mentally separate the page layout into three
    sections:
    1. Stuff that will not change for the life of the site (i.e.,
    the basic
    structural elements)
    2. Stuff that *could* change from time to time (e.g.,
    navigation elements,
    burst advertisements, section-specific navigation, etc.)
    3. Stuff that *will* change from one page to the next
Then I create a template containing all class1 elements. Next
    I create
server-side include files containing all class 2 elements and
    place them on
the template as needed. Note - some of the class 2 elements
    may be
"section-specific elements", and their placement on the
    template will be
subject to the next item. Finally, I insert editable regions
    to cover the
class 3 items, INCLUDING the section-specific navigation.
This allows me to just cookie-cut the rest of the site. I
    estimate that
even for fairly large sites, about 80% of my work goes into
    planning and
    creating this template file.
For what it's worth, I never use Library items....

  • Replace Library item sidewide in Dw

    Hi,
Is there a way to change Library item sidewide in Dw?
Issue: I want footer.lbi to be changed to footer-fr.lbi in a particular folder of my site.
The change links sidewide command doesn’t not work for this particular case as well as find/change command who give me the following error message: Making this change would require changing code that is locked by a template or a translator. The change will be discarded.
I was thinking of SSI but when I talk to our servers maintenance guys, they told me that it wasn’t compatible.
    Anyone has an idea?
    Thanks!
    Martin

<I was thinking of SSI but when I talk to our servers maintenance guys, they told me that it wasn’t compatible.>
.lbi is proprietary to DW so they can't be used as SSIs.  I never use Library Items.
If you have decent web hosting, I'm fairly certain you CAN use SSIs provided you name your documents with a proper extension type (.shtml, .shtm, .php, .asp, .cf...).  which tells your server there are includes on the page that need to be parsed.
    SSIs described:

  • Restoring iPhoto Library

I lost some photos from my iPhoto library, so I restored the library from Time Machine backup between the date the photos were originally imported and the date they turned up missing.
Although I tried restores from a number of different dates and time, none of the restored libraries had the missing photos.
Also, the restored libraries "modified" date was changed from the date the photos were imported to the current date, even though I didn't modify the library on the current date.  In fact I hadn't even opened iPhoto after restoring the library.  The process of restoration either changed the "modified" date, or the backedup library was not in fact restored (or not correctly backed up).

Here is the sequence of events:
On Feb 23 and 24 I took some pictures.
On Mar 8 I imported the pictures to one of my 5 iPhoto libraries, erasing the memory card after the successful import.
On Mar 18 I opened iPhoto to use some of the photos.  Unsure of which library I used last, I option-clicked to select the desired library.  The pop-up window showed duplicate names for two of my libraries.
I selected one of the duplicates to discover that the last import was missing.  Then I shut down iPhoto and option-clicked to select the other duplicate library which did have the last import.
I selected and dragged 8 of the photos (one at a time) to a Pages document.
After shutting down iPhoto, I proceded to clean up the hard drive by trashing one of the duplicate files.
I used the FIND command to locate the iPhoto libraries in the finder.  I noticed that one of the duplicates was labeled "iPhoto Library" and the other duplicate was labeled "package".
I trashed the file I thought did not have the last import, reasoning that if I trashed the wrong file I could restore the good file from the Time Machine backup.
Apparently, Time Machine had not backed up both duplicate files, but only backed up the bad library.
Question:  What caused the duplication of the two libraries in the first place, and why didn't Time Machine back up both duplicates?

  • Library File endless loop...$100 to fix the problem

I created a Library file and inserted it on two pages. now I get this endless loop of "update" and nothing gets updated. I will pay the person $100 bucks if they can figure out the TRUE answer to what is going on and can fix it! Dreamweaver support says this is NOT a software issue and they can't help. Why not, no idea...but let me know who can fix this!

I never use library items.  I much prefer server-side includes.
Without seeing your code, I'm guessing
         a) your library item is corrupted and/or
         b) the file's containing the library item have code validation errors which DW cannot reconcile.

  • Can I recover sms and mms messages if I have never backed up my iphone?

    Hello,
I am completely new to the Apple family and am having a hard time understanding how the initial backup to iCloud affects my deleted iMessages, SMS, and MMS correspondences. I want to recover a group of SMS and MMS conversations that my toddler deleted...I know...I know - so green I did not even initiate the lock screen. To be honest, we don't lock devices in our home. I have never backed-up/signed into iCloud from my iphone. I keep seeing posts about texts/pic not being "really" deleted as some can find them in a search. Is it possible to recover these at all without using thrid party software? Some part of me believes that becasue I have never backedup my phone, the deleted data is just waiting to be "dumped" into iCloud...maybe that is the illogical and sleep deprived part. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you “Synced” your iPhone "SMS" to iTunes and/or backup to the cloud, you may be able to recover messages from an iPhone SIM Card. I use a program called iOS data recovery that will take the text messages from the backup and allow you to restore them and/or back them up to an external application.
    Restore from iTunes backup:
Step 1: Connect your iPhone to the PC/Mac
    Step 2: Open iTunes
Step 3: Click on Devices tab
Step 4: Right-click on the iPhone that’s connected and click ‘Backup’
Step 5: Note that this will effectively remove all old information on your iPhone and get the backup data on your iPhone. If you had backed up sms too in your previous iTunes backup, those will be restored to the iPhone and you should mostly recover that deleted sms messages now.

  • ITunes has detected an iPod in Recovery Mode. Wiped out library and is stuck in loop.

Message "iTunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes" and after restoring, all content was erased from iPod and it is stuck in a loop displaying the same message - never reloads library. It just returns to error message. There was no problem with the iPod. It worked fine until iTunes "restored" it. Support gives the same crap - out of warranty, send money for repair. Try rebooting... right, that fixes everything.
iTunes was recently updated and that may be the root cause of the failure. Communication between iTunes and iPod is still functioning - iTunes can reset everything back to factory default but, hangs and won't reload library to iPod. Anyone else have this problem after installing new version of iTunes?

    Maybe:
Restore loop (being prompted to restore again after a restore successfully completes)
Troubleshoot your USB connection. If the issue persists, out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software may be causing this issue. Please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. .
Next try placing in DFU mode and then restoring.

Then try restoring on another computer.

  • How do I stop duplicating files when I "add to library" ?

I have a folder on an external hard drive containing 20,000 songs. "When I Add To Library" 5,500 get duplicated. I have unchecked the copy files to iTunes Media folder and this still happens. Every file shows the exact same date added. I have never had this problem in the past. I syncronized the hard drive with external library from my lap top, created a new library on the iMac and then Add To Library, the entire folder.
The backup folder does not show all these duplicates. I have thrown out the folder and recopied it from the backup. It looks fine until I try to Add To Library. Then 1/4 of my tracks get duplicated. Most of these are recent purchases, but not all of them.

What exactly are you doing. You never "upload" a library into iPhoto. You import photos (never a library) into iPhoto
And for many reasons I would never import 75,000 in one import. Do a thousand or a few thousand at a time

  • How to move itunes library from PC to mac

im getting a iMac intel core duo 17" very soon. I currently have my 1,750 song iTunes library on my PC. to move my library, should I connect the computers with a cable? then do the same thing as moving the library with an iPod? (except for the ipod part)
    thanks

    Hey all,
I haven't been on this section of the apple site for a while. I sadly took a job at a school where they use pcs.
Anyway I thought I could help.
I've transfer full music folders from two computers many times but never a library from a pc to a mac. Let me explain the difference.
The folder that holds all your music only holds your music. IE on mac (osx) its ~/Music/iTunes Library/Music
and on a pc (windows 2000 and newer) its in
    /Documents and Settings/user name/My Music/iTunes/Music
The "Library" is the thing that keeps tracksof your albums. I belive this file is in XML format and should work the same on both a pc and mac.
Anyway, this is how you transfer the whole thing from one machien to the other over a network.
It is best if you wire them together. Proccess goes much faster.
On the mac we must first turn it into a server that the pc can talk to
When you are logged in as an administrator on the mac go to the apple menu > system prefernces
    click on sharing
enable windows sharing. You may also need to enable an account to connect with. I recomend that you enable the user who gets the music. ( i can clerify this if requested [email protected])
    Ok then on the PC
go to the start menu > run
type in your macs ip address or name
it should look something like this \\192.168.1.2
then clock ok, wait a bit and eventualy it will ask for a username and a password. Use them name and pass for the user you enabled in the sharing control panel step
then you will see a window with your users folder in it.open it and navigate to the Music folder.
I hope that you havent loaded anymsuic on that user gets trickeier if you did and you may not be able to keep your albums. I can expalin this too in greater detail later.
So you have one window that shows the content of your mac and ist user.
Now we need to go get the documents out of the pc.
Open the "My Documenst" fodlder on the desktop and open my msuic. within it you will find an iTunes folder just like the one on the mac. replace the one on the windows machine with the one on the mac and let it copy. Dont let either machine sleep or you might have to do it again.
Anyway. I hope this helps. I see they now have added browny points to peoples posts. And I was just happy helping people switch.
Anyway now to find a solution to my problem cheers
    pax

  • Drive swap

The original 250G hard drive is in a safe - just in case I need it. Probably only if I need to send it to AppleCare. I filled all the bays with 500G hard drives. But Aperture was getting slow because the 500G was too small with my iPhoto library that I never use and my iTunes library which continues to grow. (I'm a hopeless iTunes Music Store addict.)
So, I bought a Western Digital 640G WD6400AAKS to replace the drive in bay 3 where my Aperture library resides. As easy as Apple made these to upgrade, I still hesitate just a bit so I didn't install the drive until today. It arrived a week ago.
I took the drive out of bay 1 and put in the new one. Then I copied my Aperture library to the new one after formatting. The dialog said it would take about three hours. I took a nap. When the copy was done, I put the old drive back in bay 1 and put the new replacement in bay 3. The old drive that was in bay 3 is in a safe that will be taken to a safe deposit box along with the original 250G drive so I won't have to worry about losing any photos from my Aperture library. I also moved my iTunes Library to bay 4's drive which is just used for a scratch disk.
    Now. On to my questions.
With the Aperture Library copied to the new drive, I decided to right-click the Aperture library and "Open with..." ->Aperture on the icon. Aperture opened the library. When I went to Aperture's preference to point it to the new location, it was already changed. So, does this mean I can just click on Aperture's application icon on the dock from now on?
I plan to weed a lot of photos out of my Aperture library, but I suspect it will get too big for this 640G drive shortly since I'm only shooting only in RAW now. I know I can still access the really old stuff from my drive going to the safe deposit box.
However, looking ahead, I'm thinking of putting the Aperture library on an external Firewire drive - probably 1.5T. Will an external FW disk be slower than the internal bus? I also have an external FW for backups and I have heard that more than one device on the FW bus will slow down the bus. If so, I would be better off putting the Aperture library on another internal. But, I understand the max size internal drive I can have in my (March 2007) Mac Pro is 1T, true?
Last question. Where is a good place to get a FW enclosure for SATA drives? All that I could find were for USB enclosures and I want to recycle my old drives for use as backup disks. Are there FW 800 enclosures for SATA 2 disks? I'm also considering a dock for the SATA drives, so I can copy the data to one or two large FW drives to go to the safe deposit box. The docks I found were for IDE disks.
Thanks. BTW, Aperture is running much faster with more room-277G free space. It got down to only 30G before I noticed and culled a bunch of photos to allow for 90G free.

Is it not possible to Archive part of your Aperture library?
Surely you don't need constant access to everything you ever shot?
I'm a pro photographer, and the way I work with my MacPro is this:
    Bay 1 - 640GB WD6400AAKS - Mac OS, Software & iTunes Library. Currently has 500GB free space.
Bay 2 - 320GB WD3200AAJS - Bootable Clone of Bay 1, backed up daily. This is the original drive that shipped with my MP, I intend to shelve it soon and replace with another WD6400AAKS.
Bay 3 - 640GB WD6401AALS - Pending Jobs. My jobs can run to 60GB each, and I usually have 7-9 jobs on the go simultaneously.
    Bay 4 - 640GB WD6400AAKS - Photoshop Scratch Disk.
    Attached via FW800:
LaCie D2 Quadra 750GB - Clone of Bay 3, backed up daily.
LaCie D2 Quadra 500GB - Last 30 or so jobs previous, edited down to save disk space.
LaCie D2 Quadra 500GB - Clone of above.
The rest is burnt to DVD, as well as being on a bunch of portable hard drives that are regularly checked for integrity.
I'm thinking of ditching the LaCies for a 5-bay JBOD enclosure, and also one of these for secondary backups:
    http://www.storagedepot.co.uk/External-Hard-Drives/Hard-Drive-Cradles/sc883/p877 .aspx
That way, I'll have more control over drive quality.
I use PhaseOne's CaptureOne Pro software, as jobs/shoots are saved as standalone 'sessions', rather than having to be part of some never-ending Library.
All eggs in one basket is never a good idea, if I were you i'd be looking into archiving the older work you rarely access.

  • Outboard drive / loosing songs / slow performance in iTunes

OK- I have xp and I have 65,000 songs using up 400gb of a terabite drive.
I have iTunes on my C:/ drive and all the music on my (72000rpm) (E:) TB drive.
    1) I get arbitary skips on playback. I have the itunes buffer set to large.
2)on launch of itunes I get nothing, re-launch, re-launch, re-launch etc... sometimes it will launch or I re-load a new itunes from the site and start over. I did do the set to headphones out so well see on that.
    3) BIG THING is I need to reload the music all the time into itunes and I loose songs! down from 65,000 to 57,100??????
    Any help would be great!!!

Biggest caution to be aware of when using external drive is to have it plugged in and mounted before starting iTunes. Otherwise iTunes defaults library to default location.
This doesn't help with issue 1. Playback from external is limited to bandwidth of your interface. If you are using USB, I would expect problems due to the bandwidth sharing nature of USB.
Issue 2 should be able to be avoided by making drive available before starting iTunes. Doing this I have never had library problems. I don't know what headphones would have to do with it. Why are you meaning with that?
Issue 3 is strange. I have only had to do this once and that was after program update.

The last week or so I have had this window (below) popping up on the top right of my screen. There seems to be no logic to when it appears - it goes away on it's own.

    I don't have connection problems.

  • Itunes freezes on startup

    Hi all
I needed to reinstall my operating system, so I exported my iTunes library. It’s very large but imported OK when I re installed everything. The next time I opened iTunes it froze, so I uninstalled it, downloaded iTunes again and then reinstalled it. When I first ran iTunes it still had my library there and still froze. I have figured it’s something to do with the library. How can I completely remove iTunes and any settings it leaves behind?
    Thanks.

I fixed it. I deleted a few files from C:\Users\Yourusername\Music\iTunes\ folder-
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    iTunes Library.itl
    iTunes Music Library.xml
iTunes then opened with no problems and I imported my backedup Library.xml

  • Laptop won't start up. Can only get to Rescue and Recovery

My ThinkPad T61 7658-CTO will not start up. I tried the system restore and that would not work either. I never backedup on a disk and I have old photos and videos that I would hate to lose.
When I run the troubleshooting message, it says: Root Cause found. Boot critical file c:\ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt. The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable (0X80070570).
    I'm devastated. Someone, please help!
Note from Moderator:  Resolved format issue.
