Never-ending spinning boot wheel after Mavericks install

After installing Mavericks on my Mid 2011 iMac, my boot screen stays on the Mac logo and the spinning wheel.
I did a clean install from a USB Mavericks boot drive to a 256 GB Pioneer SSD that I recently installed. The install was successful and I was able to do the initial bootup and adjust some settings. I was using Disk Utility on my internal 2 TB HDD to zero-erase the drive when my system went to a black screen; the mouse pointer was on screen but no mouse or keyboard inputs had any affect. I held the power button to shutdown the system, then turned it back on and encountered the hanging boot screen.
I have tried to boot into recovery to no avail, the spinning wheel just spins forever. Internet recovery freezes when I try to type my wireless router password; a wired connection starts with the spinning globe and grey progress bar, then goes to the spinning wheel that never stops. The Mavericks USB boot is now called EFI boot and results in the spinning wheel when I try to boot to it. Lastly, booting into safe mode is the infinite spinning wheel as well. Also, resetting the NVRAM/PRAM did not fix the issue.
The SSD that has Mavericks installed on it shows up when I hold the Option key during boot so I do not think it is a hard drive failure. Could I be wrong? Why am I unable to access Recovery? I have searched the support discussions for similar posts but have not found any like my problem. If there is one, please direct me to it. I am extremely frustrated at this point and would appreciate any help.

If I try to rotate a photo in the Finder menu I get the never ending spinning color wheel?

The problem with write permissions for the OneDrive folder only shows up in Lightroom 6's export dialogue, that's why it's to irritating. Lightroom 5.7.1 is not having that problem nor does the file explorer. The problem also exists on both of my machines. I will try to check for other problems with the OneDrive troubleshooter though: Running the OneDrive troubleshooter - Windows Help

  • Lost document files after Mavericks install

After Mavericks install from App Store, document folders located in Dock are replaced with question mark icon; unable to locate files in Trash, iCloud, or Finder.
While I appreciate feedback on backups, never have had issues losing files before when installing apps from App Store.  Please advise.

I have the same problem. It just accured today, and i updated to Mavericks several weeks ago. I cant open several folders in Finder but when i right click on them it say that they contain eg. 5 Gbit... But i still cant see/open anything in some folders.
Also yesterday (right before i realised the Finder problem) my computer was slow and acting weird so I tried restaring it, and after it sayed that my start-up-drive (or somting like that) was nearly full. It wouldnt start propoly after that, but then after a few goes I got it to work... I have no clue whats going on really..

  • Time machine won't back up after Maverick install

Installed Maverick today on macbook pro, then have been unable to back up to Time Machine to my Western Digital 3TB drive.  Last back up was successful just before install earlier today.
Time Machine Error "Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only.
    and a second message
Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “My Book”. Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only. You may need to repair or reformat the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can’t be repaired, you must use a different disk for backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk.
First restarting after Maverick install I received an error message that the disk "my book" could not be repaired.
When I go to get info on the external drive, under sharing and permissions it sayes I can read only, and I cant figure out how to change this everything to try is grey'd out.
Any help in fixing the problem and understanding the issue.

I'm also having this issue. I havn't had it before.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Calendar entry takes along time.  I get the spinning color wheel after each tab.  How do I avoid this?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

  • Long Unresponsive Delay with Spinning Color Wheel After Compressor Launches

    I'm running FCS3 with Compressor 3.5.
After I launch Compressor, there is a 1-2 minute delay before it will respond to my mouse clicks. The Choose a template window will finally appear after the long delay and then Compressor is responsive to user input.
The reason why this is happening is because I have six (6), yes 6, external optical DVD and Blu-ray burner drives connected to my Mac Pro through a combination of FireWire and USB. When I turn them all off, the delay and unresponsiveness in Compressor is significantly shorter (about 6 seconds). Compressor tries to scan for all your optical drives upon program startup, and this can take a long time if you have many optical drives connected. This issue does not exist in Compressor 3.
This is just a tip for anyone else out there who may have several optical drives connected to your Mac. If you only have one or two optical drives, then you may only see a 6 second delay with the spinning color wheel after Compressor starts up, which is bearable.

Again, this is just a tip. If you want to avoid long delays after starting up Compressor, then disconnect or turn off any external optical burning drives you may have connected.

  • Please can anyone help me. Spinning wheel on any operation after Mavericks Install.

I would really appreciate anybody's help as I am desperate. Thank you in advance.
After 3 days I have finally got a system running again on my macbook pro mid 2012 but not a without major problem.
I am constantly getting the spinning colour wheel and i can hardly do anything. Booting up in safe mode is fine and I get no spinning wheel.
    Briefly what has happened -
4 days ago I decided to make a clean install of mavericks as I wanted to clear the clutter from my hard drive and the fact i was getting a spinning colour wheel very ten minutes for around 10 seconds thus interrupting my work. The download and install kept failing toward the end of installation process. Through recovery mode and disk utility i wiped my hard rive to put on a fresh copy but that left me with no recovery, no OS and it has taken 3 days for me and some help from a guy in the apple community to finally get a system running.
Unfortunately my only internet connection (which i sci-fi) is at a cafe in the small village I live in and I have no access to another mac or internet connection and there is no genius bar or mac tech of any sort near by. So I went through the steps of 'internet recovery mode' which kept failing but after 2 days and hours in the cafe I managed to install mountain lion onto a usb stick. With this I was able to put mountain lion on my system. It seemed fine and I then went onto download mavericks. Every time the installation failed. It takes nearly four hours for it to even download. Last night through endless attempts using the createinstallmedia method i was able to wipe my usb that had mountain lion on and put mavericks installer onto it. So i was left with a usb stick with mavericks installer on it and mountain lion on my macbook pro.
Last night I kept trying to install mavericks via Disk Utility in recovery mode because trying to install it from the usb just wasn't working. after attempts here and there and no luck - In disk utility i saw on the left My apple hard drive and underneath the name of my personally named HD. Below that was a horizontal line and below was a yellow/orange hd with disk02 labelled next to it and one called base system. Below that my usb with install os x mavericks.
This morning, in the cafe I managed to get mavericks working via disk utility in recovery mode. The problem is when i click on finder in the dock, when i try open an app, click on the menu bar - I get the coloured spinning wheel which keeps going for at least two minutes. I fixed disk permissions, run verify disk and everything was fine, started in safe mode and everything is fine. I reset my pram, smc and still i have this spinning wheel when i try do anything . I have my phone with me and its been the only way i can go online to try solve any problem what so ever but as of this moment i have typed and no spinning wheel but if open another tab it will start. I managed to download ETRECHECK and have my results, I also looked at my console which I don't understand but obviously something is wrong. I will post below my results from etrecheck and console, if someone could advice me I would be very grateful.

  • Mac App store problem after Mavericks install

I have installed Mavericks, 3 times now, on my MacBook Air. There have been a few hicups but the only one I have been unable to fix is the App Store. It will open, accept my user name and perform updates however it will not allow me to view or download new Apps. If I create a new user that user has full functionality. So the Maverick install has obviously done something to my Mac Store user settings. Has anyone any idea how I fix it?
    Thanks

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box markedAllow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use  another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Will not boot up with maverick installed

MAC PRO WILL NOT BOOT UP AFTER INSTALLING MAVERICK

I know it can appear like Mavericks is causing an issue, but really what has happened is the installation has uncovered some operating system issues that previously existed. It's typically best to backup your data and perform an Erase & Reinstall before doing an Mac OS X upgrade. This ensure you get a good, clean, stable copy of the OS before moving forward.
All the same, if you're getting a gray/white screen at startup, try following the steps in this KB article

I have installed OS X Mavericks on a Mac mini (upgrade from OS X 10.8). After the install I can't log in to the admin account using my regular password. However, the other account, not having admin rights, works fine in the Mavericks OS. But I need access to the admin account as well! How can I reset the password? I have no recent backup.

  • CDMA USB Modem Not Working After Mavericks Install

I use my LG VX9100 (Env2) as a CDMA USB internet modem, and it worked fine in Mountain Lion on a Mid 2012 Macbook Air and all other Macs I tried it with.  After upgrading to Mavericks, I am not allowed to initiate a connection because the I get a message of "No SIM" after it tries to initialize from the menubar.  The phone works fine and I have confirmed that all of the settings are the same.  The phone is on Verizon, so the phone has never had a SIM card.  This all worked prior to the Mavericks install, so it appears to be a bug.  Any suggestions of what to try?

Hi, no drivers were required in the past, basically just had to type in the phone number as the account name followed by @vzw3g.com and enter VZW as a password and it would connect right up using the built in cell data of the phone plan.   Only works with dumbphones as far as I know.
So, unless mavericks is subtracting features rather than adding them, the built in drivers should still be there.  I have tested it with 10.6 through 10.8 and settings are accesable via the "Network" PrefPane and it always recognized it from a fresh install of OSX.  The following article suggests that they have been built into OSX since OS 10.2:
    http://www.engadget.com/2005/01/18/how-to-use-your-cdma-cellphone-as-a-usb-modem /
That article was written in 2005 and said that some carriers would need a driver, but I know for sure that more were added since then as I have used built in drivers from 10.6 to 10.8.
Windows may need drivers, but mac has had most CDMA drivers built in for over 10 years now.  The VX9100 uses a generic vendor driver, but OSX had selections for most major cell phone manufacturers built in for any custom requirements.  There just doesn't seem to be a reason to get rid of the feature now.
Given the fact that it does show up in the menubar like it used to shows that the mac can tell that it is a modem and has the drivers there, but they aren't working properly.

  • Finder Shows a "Scrambled" Screen After Mavericks Install

Installed Mavericks last night. Everything went fine except for the "completing installation" (after the machine reboots) where I got a message telling me "less than a minute to go" even though it took close to an hour. But it did finish and I was excited.
After the install, and prior to going to bed, I noticed that everything on the machine was very slow, performance-wise. But I was also aware that Spotlight was probably re-indexing my entire machine and didn't worry.
Just got up and decided to check out the machine. Performance-wise, it seems to be back to normal. However, just as I was about to breathe a big sigh of relief, I am noticing that the Finder (and only the finder so far, no issues with any other software that I've noticed) is having some major display issues. For instance, lets say I'm in my Downloads folder. Everything is in list format (my preference) nice, normal and neat. But if I grab a file (just a random JPG) and throw it in the trash... well, as soon as I do that everything goes berserk in that Finder window.
Have tried toggling the display options at the top of the window (icons, cover flow, etc...) and while it will change what shows up in the window, it is still scrambled. Ditto for navigating to a new window. If I choose desktop (currently empty) I get a plain white window but if I show any other folder with content in it, its the same scrambled view.
What's more is that when I attempted to take a screenshot, it doesn't render the scrambling, just puts a gray window in place of where the scrambling effect was. I have included that screenshot here and then I also took a literal photograph of my screen and attached that as well.
Can anyone help? I'm afraid of rebooting my machine for fear of making the problem worse. And I foolishly did not do all of the back-up steps recommended before a Mavericks install, so that may limit my options moving forward. Ugh.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Man, I'm afraid to say it but it is starting to look like the Finder glitch thing is the least of my worries. After spending a couple of hours on my Mac, I'm finding that my earlier statement about speeds being back to normal was incorrect. Everything is SLOOOOOW. Even typing in this Window is taking forever becuase there's a long lag, characters jumping, etc...
This seems to extend everywhere. Web pages are incredibly slow to load now. Apps are taking forever to load. It just took 90+ seconds to open Safari. Ugh.
A day ago I had a lightning fast machine with a reliable OSX that had never given me a single issue. Now I've got a slow, glitchy POS that wouldn't come out on top if it was facing off against a 10 year-old HP. Thanks a lot, Apple.

  • MBP freezes after Mavericks install restart

I have tried to install Mavericks onto my MBP mid/late 2007 model. However after what seems ot be a smooth installation process with no reported errors the Mac freezes when it gets to the the Apple logo.
I have reset the SMC and PRAM. Booted into safe mode. Checked the drive with Disk Utility and Drive Genius. Tried the installer multiple times. Re-installed the factory ram (upgraded last year to 6 gis ram using an OWC kit).
Now I am restoring to Mountain Lion via Tim Machine.
Foot Note: This initially happend, same way, a few weeks ago when trying to update Mountain Lion to the latest update. So perhaps something was introduced in Mountain Lion to prep for Mavericks that initiated this problem.
    Please help!

I have a MBP late 2007 and I tried to upgrade to Mavericks... Well, a four days nightmare before giving up and going back to my Lion.
    This is what I tried:
1.- Just upgrade, as I have always done. Result: after the system has been upgraded, a few seconds after Mavericks has booted up, the computer just freezes.
2.- I did a clean install of Mavericks telling it to transfer my stuff from a Time Machine backup after the first boot. Result: the same, a few seconds after Mavericks has booted up and my account is being loaded, the computer freezes.
3.- Another clean install of Mavericks, but this time telling it to transfer my account. After the information transfer is done, the system boots up and I start using it, it seems to be working, and I start reinstalling the software I need: VMWare, iWork, Aperture, iLife, Steam... Everything is going fine, the computer seems to be fine. The last piece of software I installed is Adobe CS5, then, I keep on working with the computer trying to install fink and the software I usually use... and then bang! The computer freezes again.
4.- Clean install of the system in an external USB harddrive, transferring everything from a Time Machine backup. When it is done, the computer is incredibly slow, but that's normal, because it is USB 2.0 on a regular HDD, and it's been a while since I installed a Crucial M4 SSD in the MBP. This time, I can use the system for a while and the computer doesn't freeze.
I check if it could be a problem with the SSD, I am using a Crucial M4 512GB SSD with firmware version 000F, so I updated the firmware to the latest version, but the problem is the same, the system freezes.
Additional information: My wife has a MBP 13'' (mine is 15'') with the same SSD, firmware version 040H, and the same software (Adobe CS5, VMWare, Aperture, etc.), but her computer is perfectly happy with the upgrade.
I couldn't find anything useful on the system logs, I also tried to boot up in single user mode, safe mode, reset the PMU or SMC (command+option+P+R)... yet no solution. The only thing I could do was to fall back to my dear Lion, that works perfectly, with its defects, of course, but it is running.
I'd really like to be able to upgrade to Mavericks, because the little time I could use it, I got the impression that it manages the resources on the machine in a better way. And, if I want to develop for iOS 7 and Mac OS X, there is no other way than having it.
Any ideas? May it be the graphic card (my computer is a late 2007 MBP 15'', that already got the motherboard replaced because of the known graphic card defect)?
