Never figured out trimming clips with transitions. :)

I've gone through Ripple Training's training movies and read the manual and, for whatever reason, I can't figure out how to trim clips that have transitions on them. Once I apply a transition to the end of a clip, I can only edit the duration of the transition itself and I cannot click and drag to change the duration of the clip. What I end up doing is deleting the transition and then trimming and then reapplying the transition.
Ugh! Is this just me?!! LOL
Thank you for wasting your time on me.

You trim the transition duration by dragging here:
You ripple the edits by dragging the handles on either end of the transition bar:
You roll the edit by dragging the handle in the middle of the transition bar:

  • Linking three or more clips with transitions in FCP7

    I am cutting my first lengthy FCP7 project from 15 minutes down to ten.
    There are a few segments of this video which I would like to keep together -- link. None of these clips in these segments are linked together at all (no underlines).
    However, I discover when I use the Command key and darken the two videoclips, the transition between them, and the audio clips that goes underneath all that, the Link function under Modify is greyed out. There's no way to treat these two video clips with transition along with the audio I set under it as a unit.
    Am I doing this wrong or is there a workaround when I want to link multiple clips (i.e. three or more) together, even if it includes a transition between the video clips?
    THANKS.

    Two ways come to mind ... #1  Nest the clips - select (highlight) the clips in the Timeline, then go to Sequence->Nest Items.
    #2  Set an IN and OUT point for the parts you want to combine, then export a self-contained movie.  Import the resulting file into your project and use it to replace the original individual clips .

  • How to move multiple clips with transitions?

    Im still transitioning from FCP7 to FCP 10.1.2 and can't believe I have missed the lesson that explains how to move multiple clips with transitions.
    Up till now I have tried several work arounds including deleting all the transitions then using the (P) Position tool to move the clips from the primary track to some track above it then re adding all the transitions.  This is a function I do on a daily basis.  Am I missing something?  Please help!
    Thank you

    With some further investigation, the transitions have nothing to do with my problem.  In my case there was a tiny “Black gap slug” within the group that was preventing me from being able set it on top of another group of clips or gap someplace.  But even with the gap removed… I can move the clips on top of another group but the transitions stay behind on the primary (Magnetic)
    In the screen shot you can see what happens when I move a group out of the primary (magnetic) timeline onto a gap.  All the transitions get left behind.
    Ive notices that Cutting and pasting will only paste the sequence some other place on the primary (magnetic) timeline for me.
    An example of why I would want to put a cropped/ resized group on top of another group is to do picture in picture effects or if I wanted to create a background behind a set of adjusted clips.

  • I have put several clips with transitions into the timeline in final cut pro. There are two clips which are followed by transitions which do not play at the right speed. It is extremely frustrating, can anyone help?

    I have put several clips with transitions into the timeline in final cut pro X. There are two separate clips which are followed by transitions which do not play at the right speed. I'm at a loss as to why this is happening - any thoughts/help?

    The two HD clips were purchased from itunes (MPEG - 4) and converted to .mov for use in Final Cut Pro. Project properties - 720p HD 1280x720 (60p)
    Is this enough information?

  • How do I move a clip with transitions attached on the primary storyline?

    One more frustrating problem with the mysterious magnetic timeline: on the priumary storyline I created a text clip with a gap clip on each side, then added cross dissolve at the beginning and end of the clip so that it fades in and out to black:
    Now I want to reposition this text in the timeline, mantaining the fade in/out at the head and tails. In FCP7 this was simple as a gap in the timeline simply showed black and the clip could be moved as one piece. In FCPX when I try to move the text clip with the P position tool, the transitions disappear after repositioning. Extremely frustrating:
    If I select the clip and the fades together, plus the gap clip at the end, and move them together with the Position tool then the fade out is retained, but the fade in still disappears. I've also tried rolling from the fade in from the gap clip before it, but instead of rolling the clip ahead this shortens the fade (I think the behavior of trimming and rolling transitions is totally wacky). The trim tool is also useless in this situation as you can only select one edit point at a time with it.
    The only solution I found is to cut the gap clip before the transition, then move the text clip and transitions with the P tool. This will create two abuting gap clips before the text clip, but allow the transitions to remain intact. Not hard, but annoying to have to do
    Often I have to adjust the position of a text clip in the timeline like this after adding the transitions to get the timing right. Is there any way to move the clip while retaining the transitions at the beginning and end? It would be so much easier to be able to roll the edges of the gap clips so that I didn't have to make extra edits and workarounds.
    The problem seems to be that the gap clip acts as like a regular black slug video clip in some cases, but not in other case. When you move a clip in the primary storyline a gap clip is automatically created to fill a gap -- okay, fine. But you can roll the edges of a video clip with the P tool, but not a gap clip. ***?
    I'm using the latest update, 10.0.8. I will be submitting this to Apple as well....

    I am trying to move the text clip forward with the transitions still attached. The difference is that in FCP7 you can leave a gap before a dissolve and it will fade in from black. If you move the text clip, the dissolve moves with it, still attached.
    In FCPX however, the gap has to be a gap clip. So the dissolve is attached to both the gap clip and to the text clip. Once you put the dissolve on the edit point, there is no way to move the text clip forward or back on the timeline without deleting the dissolve. Or, if you move the clip forward or back with the Position tool (necessary to create a gap) then the transitions just disappear.
    Basically, I am looking to roll the transition with the clip.
    I could use the opacity handle on the text clip (using "show video animation") in stead of a dissolve, but then I have no control over the shape of the dissolve curve and I'd have to add extra handles to the text clip to center the dissolve where I want it.
    Regarding "I very seldom use the position tool. Rolling the gap clips can be done with the regular arrow tool - *that* is one example of the magnetic timeline working for you."
    This is true, but clips behave differently when you you roll with the P tool vs the A tool. With the A tool, other clips are magnetically rippled forward or back on the timeline to maintain their relative relationship and avoid all gaps. With the P tool, video clips maintain their position on the timeline, creating or trimming gap clips when a gap is created or filled. The problem arises when a transition is attached to the clip you are moving or trimming.
    I understand in priniciple why it behaves the way it does, but it's inconvenient in this case, and inconsistent with the normal behavior of gap clips when a transition isn't involved.
    In my mind the transition should be anchored to the video clip, not to both the video and gap clip when there is a transition between the two.

  • Can't figure out syncing contacts with Windows 7 mail

    I've only been using Windows 7 for about a month and can't figure out why the contacts from my iPhone won't sync to the Windows Live mail of Windows 7. I want my phone contacts to override my mail contacts, not the other way around.
    In the INFO tab of the iPhone sync section I have the box checked to sync contacts. It gives me three choices: Google Contacts, Yahoo Contacts, Windows Contacts. I have Windows Contacts selected.
    If anyone can help me sync my phone contacts down to the Windows mail contacts it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you very much for trying to help but unfortunately I'm even more lost. I followed those instructions but to no avail. I can't begin to figure out why a simple thing like syncing my iPhone contacts down to Windows Live mail is such a big ordeal.
    There are a ton of my contacts showing up in the contact list of my mail but it's not even close to being the most updated list. I honestly don't know where Windows Live got them from but there's just a whole weird mix of people, many of which aren't even my contacts but just email addresses of strangers that I may have dealt with one time in the past. The whole **** thing is a mess and I don't know where to go from here.

  • Can you lengthen a clip with transitions intact?

    Quite often I will have an isolated video clip (such as a title on an upper track) on the timeline with a transition on each end (usually a cross-dissolve), and then for one reason or another I want to lengthen or shorten the clip by just dragging its edges right or left. But before I can do that, I always have to delete the transition first, and thus whatever adjustments I've made to the transition are lost.
    Is there any way to leave a transition intact while dragging the edges of a clip right or left? Or does the transition always have to be deleted first, and then replaced afterward?
    Tom B.

    The roll tool! Yes! I didn't know it was good for that. Thanks David & Tom. I just did some experimenting, and found that the roll tool when selected from the tool palette works great for this, and I also tried putting the cursor right at the end of the transition to see if it automatically changes into a roll tool. It does, but only if the timeline is sufficiently enlarged so that the transition is a big icon. If the Timeline view is small, so that the clips and transitions are seen tiny, I can't get the automatic method to work. Since I often have the timeline sized small so as to see more of the project, I guess in my case I'll just have to choose the roll tool off the tools palette rather than have it automatically appear. No big deal.
    But now I know how to do it. The roll tool. Thanks!

  • Can't figure out whats wrong with this IF statement

    Hey.
    I must be tired cause I just can't figure out why this IF statement doesn't work. It's probably something silly but please help me get it right. The user is prompted with a form (textfield) and I'm gonna check if its the right password (this is not the reason im doing this but it works good for this example).
    if(displayable == form){
              String correctPassword = "abcd";
              System.out.println("Input: " + textfield.getString());
              System.out.println("Correct: " + correctPassword);
              if(textfield.getString() == correctPassword) {
                   System.out.println("Password is correct");
                   Display.getDisplay(this).setCurrent(mList);
              else {
                   System.out.println("Wrong password");
                   destroyApp(true);
                   notifyDestroyed();
    }Even though i enter the correct password, it still thinks it is incorrect. This is how the WTK compiler outputs the above statement.
    Input: abcd
    Correct: abcd
    Wrong passwordObviously the passwords DO match, so what am I doing wrong?

    The == comparison operator returns true for equal primitives OR for variable references to the same object.
    Classes (usually) override the .equals (Object obj) method inherited from Object to return true when objects of the class are essentially equivalent.
    Run this java code segment and try to understand the output.String aStr = "A string";
    String bStr = aStr;
    if (aStr == bStr) System.out.println ("== true");
    else System.out.println("== false");
    if (aStr.equals (bStr)) System.out.println (".equals true");
    else System.out.println(".equals false");
    System.out.println();
    bStr = new String ("A string");
    if (aStr == bStr) System.out.println ("== true");
    else System.out.println("== false");
    if (aStr.equals (bStr)) System.out.println (".equals true");
    else System.out.println(".equals false");
    System.out.println();
    bStr = new String ("Some String");
    if (aStr == bStr) System.out.println ("== true");
    else System.out.println("== false");
    if (aStr.equals (bStr)) System.out.println (".equals true");
    else System.out.println(".equals false");Ask again if it's not clear enough. But first, read the API for Object.equals (Object obj) to understand the contract of .equals (...)

  • How do I remove a piece from a clip, with transitions, without it sliding together

    When I put some kinds of transition on a clip, why does FCP-X put a gray block around that clip, which then causes anything deleted from the clip to now "slide together" instead of maintaining the timeline?  I have two video streams shot from two different cameras, which I am selecting moments from.  I never want the deletion of anything to cause the "time" relationship between the two streams to change.  Yet, that seems to be unavoidable, once this grey block appears around the clip.  So, I find I must alwas select another point, to the right and use the blade to cut at that point before I can insert a transition, and then that same transition gets added to the right end of that clip as well.  I am a newish user of FCP-X, so I might just not have found the right qualifying key stroke modifier to select a different mode.
    This is identical in behavior from use "delete" on the main keyboard vs the "DEL" key on the 9 key cluster to the right of the main keypad, on the numeric keyboard, if that helps explain the behavior I am seeing.

    This illustrates the issue I was having.  The magnetic effect, seems, for me, to come from no where.  Why would this not be a toggleable effect on a clip to explicitly allow you to manage a clip as a standalone clip where magnetic effects are problably what you want, verses my use case, where I have two camera angles stacked, and I just want to select views from each clip along the time line.
    When the camera angles are time related, it's just nuts to have to deal with this issue, and "lift from timeline", doesn't even start to hint at how this might help me solve the problem.
    Thanks for you help!

  • My sound is fine but my mic isnt working. how do i fix or figure out whats wrong with it

    Title says it. I just did a clean wipe on my computer and now my mic isnt working on vent or skype, i dont know what is wrong with it.  When i go to my sound hardware it says my external mic, IDT high def audio codec is enabled..

    Same thing here. Must be update related. Who knows. Tried to go into ventrilo today and nada. Can hear people fine, microphone not picking. In my devices it says my Anvex Virtual Audio is "not available", same with the "IDT High Definition Audio Codec. Now I'm starting to get a little agitated. No diagnostics have come back with a ping on the issue. All settings seem fine. I HAVE AUDIO, as in my speakers are working so **bleep**.
     I'm lost. No clue how to fix it. Guess I'm no longer raiding and that if this isn't working I'm going to go buy a Dell and rage beat this piece of **bleep** in the yard. That's right. I am taking 3 years of continual frustration out with HP errors, Vista complications and overall disatisfaction.
     If you can fix this problem I will offer you pictures of fluffy kittens and circus acrobats/contortionists. Now fix my ventrilo. lol

  • Figured out a Bug with Lightroom 2

    Now just how to get it to Adobe so they can fix it.
    Okay, I used to have a problem with the first version of 2.0 where I would assign color labels to pictures that would be B&W, special tweaks, etc. When I would edit in photoshop, then save back to lightroom, they would not retain the color label. This has been fixed in 2.1. Today while editing, I would be going back in forth all day long and all of a sudden it happened. My edited file was not in my color category. Finally after about 5-6 times, I realized what I was doing. When in photoshop, I would run certain actions for certain color effects. If I did not like the particular action, I would hit F12 to revert back to the original. After finding the effect I wanted, I would save back to lightroom. I guess for whatever reason, when you hit revert in Photoshop, it strips the color label info. Seems kinda weird. Anyone have any thought on this?
    Thanks,
    Toby

    Hi Jazzey ,
    were you able to get your data . I apparently have a similar problem a really need the data in my computer . Let me know how things went with you and whether you were able to solve the problem. That would be a great help to me as I am clueless of how to proceed. Thanks in advance.

  • Figured out the issue with local flash storage

    OK , a lot of people have had the same issue i had with the local flash storage settings not working, or any of the settings for that matter.....i tried everything and nothing would work. After hours and hours of troubleshooting i finally switched my default web browser from internet explorer to google chrome and bam all the settings were back to working order. Hope this post helps.

    bug is closed by Adobe as "NotABug".
    Flash Players before 11.3.300.257 had different behavior that was more reliable: placing "Dictionary" object to the local storage allowed reading it as "Dictionary". Like placing "Array" resulted to reading "Array" from shared object.
    With Player 11.3 it doesn't work anymore. Reading a property that was placed as "Dictionary" results to plain "Object" read. Any code like "var a:Dictionary = sharedObj.myDictionary as Dictionary;" returns "null". This is very annoying bug that resulted to our application not working for 2 days until we found the reason. I regret Adobe doesn't admit this a bug.
    Writing this in order if someone of developers face with the same issue.
