Never share dilemma

Hi all. I have inherited an essbase app contains a number of parent entities with single children below them (ie 1 child per parent). As such, they are marked as Never Share - no problem there. It also an alternate entity structure using shared members based on the parents (which are in fact never share members). This alternate entity structure is not rolling up correctly as a result of this, but I am unsure of the best way to correct it. Does anyone have any suggestions other than changing the alternate structure to share the child entities?
Thanks
Sean

Is the alternate hierarchy after the master hierarchy or before?
I'm not super clear on why it wouldn't work, assuming the upper level blocks in the master hierarchy are calculated.
Essbase should calculate the dimension from top to bottom, level 0 on up (sounds more confusing than it is).
If your shared hierarchy is above the master hierarchy, there's a chance it isn't going to get agged.
A good way to test this is to aggregate the dimension twice.

  • Using "Never Share" Property in child level

    Hi all,
Can anyone explain the usage of never share property at children level.Say for Eg:
    Case 1:
    Margin(Parent) - Dynamic Calc
         Sales(Child1) (+) Store     1000
         COGS(child2) (+) Never Share     200
Value i get for Margin is 1200
    Case 2:
    Margin(Parent) - Dynamic Calc
         Sales(Child1) (~) Store     1000
         COGS(child2) (+) Never Share     200
Value i get for Margin is 200
What is the use of never share here..?
    Kindly help!!
    Thanks,
    Rev

in this case the never share is irrevelent. Never share is typically used on parent members to force it to store a value. This is to handle a condition called implied shares. If you want to lear more about it, look that up in the database administrators guide (DBAG)

  • Never Share property from Rules file

    Hello everyone,
I need to apply storage property as 'Never Share' from rules file, I've a column in a file which says 'Never Share' / 'Store Date' for Members, for this column I'm using Field Type as 'Property' but could not succed after dimension build.
    1) Can we apply storage property from rules file?
    2) I have different data for a parent and it's children, so if I ignore consolidation type for all Childern under a parent will that satisfy instead of Never Share ?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi John,
Thanks for your quick response. :)
    Regarding the Never Share,
I have a situation where Parent is not sum of it's Children, i.e. input data is present at other levels apart from level 0.
For the above case, if a Parent has only one Child then by default Implied sharing is enabled for parent and will not display correct data. So in this situation if
    a) Setting Parent to Never Share will allow me to have different data for parent and child OR
    b) Setting consolidation of child or Children to (~) ignore
    will they solve the problem?

  • Never Share and inputting data into a Planning Web form.

Currently I have several accounts where there is one child per parent. The child member is set as "Never Share" and the parent member is set as "Dynamic Calc". When I show both the parent member and child member in a web form any data inputted into the child account is lost once the data is saved? How do I setup the web form so that I can save data to these child account members?
    Thank you

    Hi,
Little disturbing but what you are facing is called implied sharing. See below post.
Re: Saving data on form will not save
In short, you have two options:
    1. Remove the parent from the form
    2. Add a dummy sibling to the same member but do not show it at the form, you can have parent and child at the same time in the form in this case.

  • Tild(~) and never share ??

    Hi,
For consolidate operator tild(~) ,Essbase dont calculate the child for parent and "Never share" storage type also dont share the value of child to parent(as i'm assuming)..then what is the difference between them?
Please guide me the right thing where I went wrong.
    Thanks

    Hi,
~ and never share have different objectives. ~ ,as you know does not participate in consolidation.Coming to the 'never share', when you have a parent with single child, its assumed to have implied share. i.e parent and child share the data in implied fashion without even setting any thing.
If you want to break this , you can set 'never share'.
    Hope this helps

  • Custom Dimension with multiple children defined as "Never Share"

    Hyperion Planning - 11.1.1.3
There is Custom dimension "Appliance" with root defined as a "Never Share". It has multiple level 0 (SubAppl1, SubAppl2, SubAppl3 etc) members with "Store". Data is some times loaded at root level and some times at the lower levels and at times both. What is the expected result?
When POV is Appliance and when it is drilled down?
    For Ex:
    For Jan -
Appliance is 100, No other members loaded with data.
    For Feb -
    Appliance is 30
    SubAppl1 is 10
    SubAppl2 is 10
    SubAppl3 is 5
    POV
    Appliance Jan - 100
Appliance Feb - 30 or 25? and why?
Trying to understand the behavior or "Never share" in this scenario.
    Appreciate your feedback.

Never Share has no bearing on your sample. The Never Share flag is to prevent a implicit sharing which will happen when you have one parent with a single child under it. Your structure is not setup such that an implicit share would occur based on your example.
I really do not recommend loading data at upper level members as this means you can never run a normal aggregation on your data. If you were to aggregate your data and you happened to have the AGGMISSG set to true you would see the data in your january example of 100 was removed due to the level 0 members not having any values.
So the question of your February being 30 or 25 is did you load 30 to February Appliance or did you load to the level 0 and then aggregate?

Yes, every time you dowbnload something from the store, free or paid, Apple will send you an invoice for it to your email. It will also be added to your Purchase history for reference.
If you have a credit card associated with your Apple ID, I would also check that no charges have been made.
If you are just getting random invoices, I would double check the address they are coming from, and also that they are indeed real invoices.

  • Best way to share documents over a same network

How best to share a document on a LAN ?
Thought I'd ask the experts who do this all the time...
We never share docs but need to over our LAN so we can both edit same docs.
What is the easiest, most efficient way to do so? Public folder, iDisk, or ?
Thanks for any help with this beginner sharing question.
    System info:
    Both Mac running Snow Leopard
    Ethernet LAN

It becomes confusing if more than one person is editing the same document at the same time. You could use a public folder then turn on "track changes" in your word processing program. The issue of course is if you are both editing then one or more of you will lose your edits when you save the document unless you are very careful on save.
The best solution is to use a document management system that does version control. merges changes, etc.
If there are only two of you each of you will need to coordinate document saves to ensure changes are merged. If one of you has the document open the other will have trouble saving changes as the document will be locked. Not to mention the need to review every word in the document to ensure the other's changes are not overwritten.
If there are more than two of you editing the same document at the same time you need a document magement system. You can't rely on a manual process, especially if it is a large document you are all editing.
If there are just two of you you could make one of you responsible for the document then use email to send this responsible person the document for merging and saving the changes to the document.
The big issue IMO is not how to share the documents over the LAN but how to maintain version control. Sharing documents on the LAN is a trivial task.

  • How to use a calc script to work around Implicitly share members

I have a hierarchy which has some implicitly shared members( one child per parent)
For example my cost center dimension is built the following way
    CostCenter
    |
    |-------------------CostCenter1
    | |
    | |--------------Member A( child of COst Center 1) ---------------------------Has 4 children members
    |
    |
    |------------------CostCenter 2
    |
    | Member B( Child of Cost Center 2)______________________ has 4 children
Anytime I use a function to reference Member A from COstCenter 1, the function is automatically skipping the next level and looking at the bottom level
    For example if I do a @COUNT(SKIPNONE, @children(COstCenter1))

it is choosing the chilod member instead of the parent eventhough the fix is defined to use the parent memberAnd that's an implied share.
Per Kevin's recommendation, make the parents Never Share and your code will work the way you expect.

  • Iphoto can't share via email; error message: Your email did not go through because the server did not reply.

I can never share via email, using iPhoto. The error: Your email did not go through because the server did not reply. always pops up. I have no problems with my server or internet connection.
    Any ideas?
    thanks.

Go into iPhoto's Accounts preference pane and delete the   email account there. Then add it back.  If that fails you can select Mail as your email client in iPhoto as that's more reliable and flexible.  It also offers stationary for photos that are not unlike those in iPhoto's client:
and using Mail as the client will allow you to have a Sent copy automatically.

  • Affects of changing a member from implicitly shared to Never shared

I had to change the storage property of a member from Implicitly shared to Never shared and would like to know the affects of it.
    For example
1.What happens to the existing data at the implicitly shared intersections? ( I assume the values will assigned to the new block too)
2.Does it stay with the child or the parent, or both?
    3. Does any of the data need to be copied over once the property is changed?
    Thanks.

When a member is changed from "implicit share/Store" to "never share" the data remains with the base/level 0 member the parent shows #missing after restructuring of the data.
So after restructuring the outline you need to run a script for data for aggregating data at the parent level.

  • Which is faster - Member formula or Calculation scripts?

    Hi,
I have a very basic question, though I am not sure if there is a definite right or wrong answer.
To keep the calculation scripts to a minimum, I have put all the calculations in member formula.
Which is faster - Member formula or calculation scripts? Because, if i am not mistaken, FIX cannot be used in member formulas, so I need to resort to the use of IF, which is not index driven!
Though in the calculation script, while aggregating members which have member formula, I have tried to FIX as many members as I can.
What is the best way to optimize member formulas?
I am using Hyperion Planning and Essbase 11.1.2.1.
    Thanks.

The idea that you can't reference a member formula in a FIX is false. Here's an example:
    - Assume you have an account that has a data storage of Stored or Never Share.
    - This account is called Account_A and it has a member formula of Account_B * Account_C;.
    - You would calculate this account within a FIX (inside of a business rule) something like this:
    FIX(whatever . . . )
    "Account_A";
    ENDFIX
If you simply place the member named followed by a semi-colon within a business rule, the business rule will execute the code in the in that member's member formula.
Why would you want to do this instead of just putting ALL of the logic inside the business rule? Perhaps that logic gets referenced in a LOT of different business rules, and you want to centralize the code in the outline? This way, if the logic changes, you only need to update it in one location. The downside to this is that it can make debugging a bit harder. When something doesn't work, you can find yourself searching for the code a bit.
Most of my applications end up with a mix of member formulas and business rules. I find that performance isn't the main driving force behind where I put my code. (The performance difference is usually not that significant when you're talking about stored members.) What typically drives my decision is the organization of code and future maintenance. It's more art than science.
    Hope this helps,
    - Jake
