NEVER TURNING OFF

Can anyone tell me why my new iMAC manual says I should never turn it off [just put it to sleep] unless I am not going to use it for more than 3 days. I have an ethernet connection and am worried that this permanent connection to the internet makes my MAC vulnerable. Also, of course, it uses electricity while asleep - though I do not know how much.
Any insight appreciated

Turning your computer on and off "wears" off the components in your computer.Putting the computer to "sleep" is a better alternative and consumes less electricity than if it where on all the time. Also putting the computer to "sleep" helps the computer do some housekeeping that keeps it running smoothly.
If you worry about viruses, get an anti virus. I am a recent Mac converter, with a broadband connection and on 24/7 (except of course for the periods when I am not using, that`s when I put it to sleep).
Coming from a Windows PC world, it feels weird not having an antivirus on my Mac, but thus far, I`ve had no problems

Grandkids set up ipad2 for grandma. Passcode forgotten and never used again.  The ipad was never turned off, and was never synced or connected to main PC.  No iTunes installed on PC.  Yesterday while visiting with owner, I downloaded an app for her.  It installed and restarted the ipad. Passcode is now needed. What to do?

If Find my iPad was never set up then scroll down & follow the directions under Recovery Mode:

If it was and the activation lock is triggered, then you will need to know the original Apple ID & password that her grandkids used to set it up or have them sign into iCloud & remove the device from Find My iPad before you can Restore it.

Good advice from Linc Davis that should sort out your query i think...
However you dont want to set your MBP to never go to sleep...
    Adjust reasonable sleep settings...
And the download an APP called caffiene...
When you click it you can have your MBP never go to sleep with a single click of your menu bar... and with another click it can go to sleep normally to maintain the laptop...
Simply click the cup... To toggle never sleep/sleep

  • IPod Nano 5G Backlight Never Turns Off!

I recently got a new iPod Nano 5G for Christmas and when I set the backlight to 2 seconds it never turns off! So the battery ends up draining completely. Another problem is the battery drains really fast. If anyone can help me I would gladly appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

  • Option to NEVER turn off

I think an update should be added so we can choose for the box to never go to standby.

I just find having to wait for the box to boot up pointless and not needed. I have it all set to stay turned on for the longest amount of time and to fast boot but you still have to wait for it to turn on and I personally would have it set to never turn off if the function was there. I see no reason why the function isn't there as it makes no odd's to BT and it would be down to the customer if they don't mind paying the electricity bill.

  • 928 Icon backlights never turn off

    Hello,
I have a strange problem that only started today. All of a sudden I noticed that my Lumia 928's 3 buttons / icons are always ON and glowing. Whether it is charging, on sleep, and even POWERED OFF!!! This has never happened before, and I have already performed 2 soft resets in addition to powering it off and back on several times. I have not done a hard reset as I don't want to lose all my data again (I only had this phone for a month).
Does anyone have a suggestion - is there some setting that I missed that will make the phone's icon lights stay on no matter what? Thank you!!

Don't know if this is what you are after, but there is an option under Front Panel "Use numbers in icons of new VIs (1 through 9)" that you could try turning off.
Anybody know when this got added?  First time I've noticed it.
I thought this was added in 2011? It's not in the list of new features in the 2012 Options.
I am using 2011 and it is there.  I was most used to 8.6, which this definately was not there.

  • Never turning off macbook

Is it bad for my macbook if I never turn it off? I do put it to sleep whenever I know I wont be using it for awhile, and I always have the charger in it.

No. My Mac Pro hasn't been shut down in three years, my wife's iMac remains on 24/7 except when she puts it to sleep, and when I'm in Canada our MBPs are never shut down. However, if you plan to leave the computer unused for an extended period of time it would be a good idea to shut it down. If it's left unused for 4 months or more then you should discharge the battery to about 40% and remove it from the computer for long-term storage.

  • Never turning off my iBook

My iBook has been acting strangely lately. Most of the time, I turn it on and none of my applications work and my attempts at fixing it freeze the computer. I use my installation disks to reboot the system and after that, it works. Yet, if I turn off the computer and turn it back on, the applications go back to not working. i've had to reboot my laptop about 5 times this week. I dont know what else to do. So, I figured, instead of turning it off when i'm not using it, can I just let it sleep, and leave the laptop running the entire day, every day? If anyone has an answer to my application problem, please reply, and if there's anything particularly damaging and stupid about leaving my computer on sleep mode for the entire day while I'm not using it, please also leave a comment. Thank you so much for your time.

It is okay to let your ipod sleep, but you still need to restart every once in a while, just to let the computer clear it's head. It is like you going to sleep everynight. You can function for a time by going about your day and then laying on the couch all night, but you won't last long with out actually going to sleep. That is basicly what you are going to be doing to the computer. You are going to give it rest, but not sleep.
Also, you need to get the problem fixed. It sounds like a software isssue, but I could be wrong. Best bet would be to take it in to someone that can fix it. It will add length to the life of your computer.

  • Ipod never turns off completely

My Ipod Classic 5th gen wont turn off properly. Press the play button it goes off then put it on hold so I cant accidentally put it on but then when I release hold it comes straight back on, no loading apple logo! It seems to just stay on in the background. If I still have my headphones in my ears when I turn the ipod off it goes quiet but as soon as i put the hold button on i can hear background static like it is still running!
Any ideas? Tried restoring it and it still does it.

A restore to factory settings would have eliminated the possibility of corrupted software.  So that this point, it's likely hardware related meaning you will want to have the iPod serviced or replaced either by Apple or a third party service.

  • Mac wireless network never turns off

I have an odd thing going on with my MacBook Pro. I turn it off, like completely off, and put it in my briefcase and go to work. Yet when I get there, people with WiFi-enabled computers can see a WiFi network with my name on it! The computer's off. What is going on?

I believe you when you say it's off, looks off, should be off, but on the other hand, even if say the Wireless card somehow had power by itself, (maybe jarred loose a bit or something), I don't think it could advertise itself without the CPU, RAM, & HD all having power, all be up & running, (maybe a low power state?), and even the OS loaded! Somehow... no real idea how, but I think it's only partially shutting down.
When you turn it on at work, does it start up normally with the gray apple and so on? How long does it take to start up?
If you pull the Battery, how long does it take to startup after that?

  • Keyboard backlighting will never turn off

Heya guys and girls. Thanks ahead of time for your help. I was just about to go to sleep tonight as I had just started a large download. I proceeded to turn down my brightness all the way down....but for some reason I couldn't turn down my backlighting on my keyboard at all! I thought for some reason it could have gotten stuck in backlighting mode (makes no sense, but worth a shot) in windows, so I booted into windows and tried to turn it off, which didn't work.
Basically what happens in windows is if I press F8 a few times, the backlighting symbol appears to be greyed out with the little circle with a slash through it. If I spam the button, every once and a while it will not be greyed out and show me that my backlighting is infact full...But when i try to decrease it after it shows up, it goes back to being greyed out and the circle with the slash reappears.
In osx, F8-10 are greyed out with the circle/slash and spamming does nothing...
Let me know of any fixes/ideas you may have please!

bump. no one else is experiencing this? I fixed it with a shut down. I think when I go from windows to osx something gets messed up in between. Right now I'm in osx and i can't turn my backlit keyboard on (earlier i couldn't turn it off).

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
