Never worked on Non-RMAN Backup tools

I have never worked on Non-RMAN backup tools. I have only worked on databases which are below 1 TB in size. If you have an Oracle 10GR2 Database which is 5 TB in size, would you still recommend RMAN for it?
Do third party tools use RMAN internally ie integrated to it?

My production DB is 800gb in size and it takes 3.5 hours to take a full backup in compressed mode. This means , it will take around 15 hours to backup a 5TB database !!
Hi Jack,
You are not obliged to do full backups with RMAN. You can use this strategy for example :
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/bkup004.htm#sthref412
You will have a fist full backup (image copy) to do but after that only incremental backups will be done. Much space is needed of course but it works well.
Best regards
Phil

    Hello,
    Ora 00603 Oracle server session terminate by fatal error.
    Ora 004030 out of process memory when trying to allocate 4120 bytes(pl/sql) MPCODE,BAMMA, BAM Buffer) The ORA-04030 error message is interesting. It means that the OS doesn't have enough memory for Oracle.
    So you may monitore the Memory usage of the Server during the Symantec Backup, and check for any activity. May be the Symantec Backup runs when other Batch Jobs use already a lot of memory . You may also have to extend the RAM of the Server.
    Also, check for the RMAN script used by Symantec and compare with the "manual" script. May be, some options are used with Symantec and consume more resources on the Server.
    Hope this help.

    Hello, i have a big problem with restoring my Firefox bookmarks and passwords with " Firefox Backup Tool" Its a "....fbk" file.
    My laptop had some problems so i made a new system set up. Backup with "Mozbackup" didn´t work.( Error message) so i used "Firefox Backup Tool 1.0" for backup all my bookmarks. The program said "backup succesful" and i got a 12mb ..fbk file. But when i tried restoring it, it says "restore successful" but there is nothing in Firefox when i start the program and look for the bookmarks. :-( I tried it over 10 times and older versions.. Firefox 23 or 3.6 etc.... nothing works.
    Can someone help me to get my bookmarks back? Or can i open the jpk file manually and copy it in firefox?
    thanks.

    Hi,
    You can follow this procedure
    1. take the backup to destination host
    2. restore spfile and controlfile
    3. catalog the backup with command 'catalog start with <location of backup>'
    4. use "set newname for datafile" to restore the datafile to non asm disk
    5. restore database
    6. recover database until point in time
    7. rename redolog and tempfile
    8. open database with resetlogs
    9. remove redolog group from another instance
    10. you might want to drop undo tablespace from another instance too
    11. task complete
    Cheers

  • Restoring RMAN Backup from ASM RAC env to Non ASM standalone environment

    Hi,
    Can anyone please tell me how to restore database using RMAN in a Non ASM environment as my backup file with ASM RAC environment.
    i was also looking for some documentation which provides clear explanation about RMAN backup and Restore in ASM and Non ASM environment.
    Thanks

    You can set the parameter db_file_name_convert in init.ora in you new database with [ID 47325.1]
    or
    you can set parameter "set newname" in your script rman. [ID 549972.1]
    if you have one or two destinations of dbfiles in ASM I seggest to you set parameter db_file_name_convert in init.
    example:
    db_file_name_convert=('+DGDATA','/u01/oradata/');
    remenber you need set log_file_name_convert to.
    log_file_name_convert=('+DGREDO','/u01/redo/');
    if you use "set newname" commands you need set this lines in your script rman.
    set newname for datafile 1 to '/u01/oradata/system01.dbf';
    set newname for datafile 2 to '/u01/oradata/undotbs01.dbf';
    set newname for datafile 3 to '/u01/oradata/sysaux01.dbf';
    set newname for datafile 4 to '/u01/oradata/users01.dbf';
    and every datafiles you need set!

  • Consolidated backup report for Non-RMAN

    We need to prepare a consolidated backup report. need to customize it and produce a master list for production backup failures/ non prod backup failures
    wondering what's the options & how to do that ....

    Oracle maintains no information about User Managed Backups.
    The only things that you can get are the
    "ALTER TABLESPACE||DATABASE BEGIN BACKUP" and ".. END BACKUP"
    commands from the alert.log. You could write a script to parse the alert.log
    and find the start and end times for the BEGIN and END BACKUPs.

    how do i fix this??
    Even on my test-server which houses databases, changing the oracleservicesid logon to administrator, disables all connections made to the database from the LAN using SQL developer. how to not let this happen??

    10g is desupported for a long time.
    Your issue is you backup to a network drive.
    The solution provided to you by Donald Burleson is correct.
    Why the website no longer functions is unclear as you provide no error messages or whatsoever.
    An easy solution would be of course to buy an extra disk to connect it directly to the server.
    From your post it is unclear why you didn't consider implementing that.
    Also your assertion about the test server is way too vague. You again didn't provide any error message.

  • RAC RMAN BACKUP Recovery FOR  Oracle APPS Application

    Hi,
    We have an Application which is similar to Oracle APPs application and We have a RAC Database at Backend.
    As I am a Oracle RAC DBA and never worked as an Oracle apps DBA.
    Each Week or month We have to deploy a patch on Our Database which are kind of sql changes to Database and before we applying we need to backup our Database.
    I am very comfortable while applying patches on Single instance Database:-
    I Usually shutdown my database and backing up My Database(Conistent\cold Backup) before applying patch.
    and I have a Flash back on both option I am having for my Database.
    Problem:-
    But in Production I have RAC Database, on which I already configured Hot Backup.
    FlashBackup Feature is there with me, but Not reliable.
    I want cold backup along with my existing hot backup, and want to restore same if something goes wrong.
    Since ASM is configured so we have only option RMAN backup.
    IF possible kindly Share your knowledge and Experience of your to handle Such Problem.

    Sir,
    RMAN is already configured for backing up database online.
    My only intention is to have cold or consistent backup before applying application patch, So that at the time of crisis I will resotre my Cold/Conistent backup.
    Because I am using 11gr2 RAC with ASM, so only option is there for me to use rman as backup tool.
    But I never tried to Have Cold backup in RAC environment in my previous jobs, and I am new to this Oracle APPS DBA technology. So Here I am looking for a Strategy that Normally oracle apps dba use while applying patch to Oracle Database and kind of backup strategy they use.

  • Rman backup

    Hi,
    I want to take one time RMAN backup with indefinite retention policy. what is the best way. I want to recover the database whenever I want may be after year time.
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1;
    or
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 500 days;
    or
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO NONE;

    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 2;
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET PARALLELISM 6;
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK MAXPIECESIZE = 20G;
    This way I will have 2 backup and I will stop to take backup from RMAN. If it requires in future I can restore any of them.
    Regards,
    DBAI am confused about what you are trying to achieve here, and without knowing that, we really can't give any good advice.
    What do you mean by "I will stop to take backup from RMAN" ?
    It's sounding like you are planning on only taking one or two backups and never backing up again ..... ?
    Are you running in archive log mode? Are you taking regular full and/or incremental backups? What are you trying to achieve by holding one backup for such a long period of time? How do you think this is better than the usual practice of taking a full backup once every week or so and incremental backups daily, with a retention period specified in terms of recovery window (time) instead of redundancy (number of backups)?
    You may have some very good reasons, or simply haven't described your intent very well, but right now it sounds like you are about to head down the road to database recovery hell.

    I will explain my scenario below:
    We have the requirement of performance testing of our proposed production platform, for this i am asked to take RMAN backup of clean position (Say Day0 or baseline backup) and restore it multiple times for few rounds of testing. My question is after 1st restore (with set until time of day0 position) if i open the database with resetlogs, would i be able to restore same clean backup again? I am using control file in the environment instead of RMAN catalog database. What i can do to make this scenario work? I am already in preperation of setting rman catalog database.

  • Oracle user for backup tool

    Hello,
    I´m with some doubts regarding an error that I´m facing right now. We need to setup a RMAN tool for we can do backup of our SAP system (with Oracle Database) but it show me the following error when I insert the user name PRDADM ( which is the <sid>adm).
    I don´t know which user we need to use at this stage and which privileges it needs to work and make the backup action of this oracle database.
    This is the error:
    This user account does not have the privileges that are required to log on to the Oracle database.
    In SQL Plus I checked which users I have in dba_users and this is the output:

    Can you help me please. Can you tell me which user I need to use?!
    Kind regards,
    samid raif

    Hello samid,
    Try this...
    In Symantec tool (Backup Exec) you have to insert the following information:
    In "Database Access" tab, you must use an OS user with the required privileges which are described in the following article from Symantec:
    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH63665
    In "Oracle" tab you need to add which oracle db instance you want to connect and also you need to insert an oracle user! For this I would suggest you to create a specific user for this backup procedure (<orauser>):
    create user <orauser> identified by <orauser password>;
    Then you need to add the required privileges for this oracle user, which are mentioned in the following article from Symantec:
    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH82892
    Now I guess you have all you need to run a backup without problems!
    Kind regards,
    João Dimas
