[NEVERMIND WRONG PROBLEM] "Configuring System Clock FAIL"

I'm getting this error in the messages at bootup:
"Configuring System Clcok     FAIL"
It just started in the last week. I've never seen this before. I tried setting "USEDIRECTISA" to "yes" in rc.conf, but this didn't help. I'm not sure what else to do or why this problem suddenly appeared after never having it before.
I'm using Arch64 on a ThinkPad T61.
Thanks.
[Edit: Oops, I misread which message said "FAIL" next to it. It's actually the "Activating Swap" step that's failing. Now to figure that out.]

Glad to do anything I can to help.
I believe it's a problem with the initscripts:

  • Configuring System Clock Failed

Hi I am new to Arch, but most things are going great.  This is what happened.  I have spent the last day setting up arch and everything has been going smoothly.  Recently it did a filesystem check and I had to manually fix some things on my root hard drive.  After that system clock fails to configure and the gnome panel clock crashes every time I try and load it. This is what I get from the buggy buddy or whatever

I haven't found anything on this really...any help getting that working again?   Thanks

Well I fixed it so here it is... sudo pacman -S gnome-panel.  Just reinstalled that bad boy and my clock works a treat.  I still have to mess with my rc.conf and see if i did something that would get me that boot script failing on system clock, but my clock works fine and so does my NTP update.

  • :: Configuring System Clock [FAIL]

Few days ago this task started failing at boot. I didn't touch anything so I don't know what it could be, may be a system update? This is a very strange thing because no matter I change "localtime" to "UTC" in rc.conf I have this fail message when booting.
I parsed rc.sysinit in search for clues but everything seems ok. Also, I booted from a fresh ISO and there's no problem there -discarded a hardware issue-, so the glitch in my system maybe is somewhat related to a recent upgrade/update.
Any idea? I'm burning my head trying to find out what's happening here but haven't any clue on what to do, where start looking or what start looking for.
Ideas will be very welcomed :S

  • Hang on saving or configuring system clock

So about half of the time that I start an hp pavilion dv6000, it locks up at the point when it says:
Configuring System Clock, or something like that (I didn't find it in any log files)
On top of that, the system hangs when it saves the system clock on shutdown.
What kind of workarounds exist for this issue of an unsupported/uncooperative system clock?

So did some searching based on your suggestion, but I cannot find any reacalls for my model, and this update does not address the issue:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/soft … ct=3379135
Once I get access to it again in july (It is currently out of the country), I will look into other solutions, including flashing the bios, avoiding saving the system clock....

  • System clock fails to update after waking from sleep

I've noticed that my new PowerMac G5 Dual-Core 2GHz (running Mac OS X 10.4.3) doesn't update its system clock to the current time after waking from sleep.
When I put it to sleep and then wake it some time later, the Clock in the upper right-hand corner doesn't update to the current time. It still ticks on (second for second) but remains out of sync.
Opening the Date & Time preferences pane will restore the time to the correct setting.
This problem only occurs with sleep and then wake-from-sleep. It doesn't happen when I shut down the machine and then restart it.
Does anybody know if I've got a malfunctioning machine? It's only 1 day old...
Or better still, how do I solve this problem?
    PowerMac G5 Dual-Core 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

No, my Mac is not having trouble contacting the time server. I checked the console log and found no messages related to this.
I am on a broadband always-on connection (recently switched from DSL to cable modem, and the problem occurred under both connections). However, my original post states that the computer loses time only when it is asleep, and I didn't think that my computer could contact the time server when it is asleep. It also loses time when it is off, which I neglected to mention previously. Am I mistaken in thinking that the computer communicates over the network only when it is awake? Since it keeps accurate time when awake (once I've reset it by opening the Date & Time control panel), it seems to me like it IS communicating with the time server without issue.
[And I apologize for misinterpreting your question as a suggestion. I was trying to be polite by thanking you for taking an interest in my issue. I'll watch my semantics more carefully next time.]
    Cheers,

  • Arch64 and system clock havoc

    Hello,
I recently upgraded my HP DV6140 laptop to Arch64. I used to use 32bit, but found myself impressed with how smooth things have become with the 64bit version. However, I soon found out that 1/4 of the time I boot up, I get a hard crash. This is always at Configuring System Clock in the boot process. Also, about 3/4 of the time when I change the date/time I get a hard crash. Annoying as hell, being that I can't use NTP to sync my time/date settings without frequent crashing. Any ideas on this? It was never a problem with 32bit Arch.
I've tried kernel 2.6.19, and 2.6.17beyond and both result in the same problem. I also tried tinkering with localtime and UTC in the rc.conf file with no luck on fixing this.

I only remember that the rtc kernel module was tricky when it was built as module. That's why we had put it directly into the kernel in early 2.6.14 days.
As far as the logs go I could not find anything out of the ordinary. If you would like you can have a look at my logs, I uploaded it to:

  • Pop-up 'Another instance is running. Configuration system failed to initialize.'

Hello - my system kept 'freezing' when a pop-up saying, ' Silverlight Plug-in has crashed' with options to repair or close. No matter what I did, t happened several times an hour, as well as the page and pointer freezing just as frequently. Often the only solution was to turn off the computer with the on/off button. Someone at work told me to delete the plug-in and I did and the problem stopped for a few days. Now, the plug-in has reappeared on the notebook, but less frequently, and the a/n pop-up comes on when I start the notebook. I suspect this action is related to what I unsuccessfully deleted. My screen and pointer are freezing less often. I appreciate opinions on how to correct this darned annoying problem.

  • Configuration system failed to initialize

Getting error when I try to install an excel addin that I have published.
Error message is  "Configuration system failed to initialize". The popup window has the title "visual studio tools for office solution installer"
To publish the addin I  use the publish option on the build menu of VS2013.
Specify the location to publish this application:  F:\publish   where F: is a USB drive.
What is the default installation path on end user computers:  From a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM
Then I take the USB drive to another PC, double click on setup.exe in the USB drive and get the "configuration system failed to initialize" error.  I copy the entire publish directory to the C: drive of the target system and get the same error.
    What am I doing wrong?
    thanks,

  • "Configuration system failed to initialize" when trying to connect FM12 to Sharepoint

Adding a connection to Sharepoint using the FM12 CMS Connection Manager is failing with the error "Configuration system failed to initialize".  I can access all the sites and libraries in Sharepoint perfectly from IE on the same PC, but no matter what I try in the FM12 Connection Manager I get the above mentioned error.  The PC (which is actually a VM) is running Windows Server  2008 R2 (x64 with heaps of RAM and HDD free) with all updates applied.  FM12 is installed as part of Technical Comms Suite 5 subscription.
Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this (or what it even means) and how I can fix it?

  • Virtualized Arch (VirtualBox) - System clock is wrong..,

In my Arch Linux VM, my system clock is either 7 hours slow or 17 hours fast (can't tell the date on it...how do I make Fluxbox display the date with the time?). This may be a problem with Arch but it most likely is a VirtualBox issue. How can I change the system clock on V-box (if that's the issue) or how can I fix Arch?
This may be a timezone issue. I live in the US, but I set "Canada/Eastern" as the timezone. Shouldn't matter because I'm in the Eastern time zone but in the interest of full disclosure, I thought I'd mention it.
EDIT: May or may not be important: I'm using Virtualbox OSE, not the proprietary edition.
Last edited by sajro (2008-03-21 13:37:56)

As far as i'm aware, clocks in virtual systems are always wrong. I don't think it's to do with arch (although changing UTC to localtime or vice versa in rc.conf might have some effect), more to do with the timing of the CPU or something being slightly off for virtual machines due to the virtual nature of the system.

    Thanks
    Sam

    Hi Sam,
Seems this is a typical problem with SAP J2EE /AddIn Installations (I had this often!!). The user is created in the J2EE user store but because his password is initial, the J2EE engine would not let him in. As I remember the installation tries to log on with user SLDDSUSER (or so, something with SLD...), so log on on to the J2EE Engine with this user (e.g http://<hostname>:<port>/useradmin) and you will be prompted to that your password is initial (also do this with user J2EE_ADMIN, always good idea to see that J2EE Engine works correctly). In most cases the configuration of the SLD will continue.
If this doesn't work, cancel the installation and configure the SLD manually (is no problem, because at that point of the installation procedure, the system is fully installed, except the SLD configuration).
    Hopes this helps.
    Regards
    Daniel

  • [SOLVED] System Clock Issues (Wrong UTC?)

**RESOLVED -- SEE END FOR FIX
    Hello everyone.
First off I'd like to say that I am thrilled to be here. I've been an Ubuntu user for a few months now, but decided that it was time to take a trip down the rabbit hole and see all that Linux had to offer--and to that end I switched to Arch. And I must say that I have nothing but positive things to say of it. The documentation on the Arch Wiki was phenomenal in helping me get started on the process, and the installation of it has proved to be a very enjoyable learning experience.
With that said, I have run into a bit of a snag, and after perusing the documentation on the Wiki, as well as running a few Google searches and searches of this particular forum, am no closer to a solution that when I started, so here I am. The problem is with my clock.
Okay, so I live in the Eastern United States, and as a result have my local time set as Eastern, and I have my hardware clock running UTC. Here is the problem. . . For whatever reason, the time displayed on my clock is five hours behind. Perplexed, I decided to see if I had set up my time zone info incorrectly and ran the "timedatectl status" command, and the results were really strange. A copy paste of the output is here:
Local time: Thu, 2012-12-20 19:27:02 EST
Universal time: Fri, 2012-12-21 00:27:02 UTC
            RTC time: Fri, 2012-12-21 00:27:02
            Timezone: America/New_York
          UTC offset: -0500
         NTP enabled: no
    NTP synchronized: no
    RTC in local TZ: no
          DST active: no
Last DST change: EDT → EST, DST became inactive
                      Sun, 2012-11-04 01:59:59 EDT
                      Sun, 2012-11-04 01:00:00 EST
Next DST change: EST → EDT, DST will become active
the clock will jump one hour forward
                      Sun, 2013-03-10 01:59:59 EST
                      Sun, 2013-03-10 03:00:00 EDT
As you can see, the time zone is set correctly to America/New_York (originally US/Eastern, but I changed it to try and resolve the problem--to no effect, obviously). However here is where it gets strange. As I type this, it is 00:27 local time. My computer has decided to use the local time for UTC, and then subtracts five hours (as I live in UTC -5) to get the local time that it displays.
I've tried rerunning the hwclock --systohc --utc command, to no avail.
If anyone has any input as to why my computer is confusing UTC and local time, and any way I could fix it, I would greatly appreciate it.
I could just change my timezone to UTC - 0, that would cause my system to display the right time (I think) but I'd rather actually fix the problem, instead of simply covering it up with a band aid, if it is possible.
    Thank you,
    Douglas
    EDIT:
I probably should mention that the machines (I'm having this same problem on two different computers) are both running Arch Linux and Arch Linux alone, although one was originally a Windows 7 and the other a dual boot of Win 7 and Ubuntu.
    RESOLUTION (Thanks lhoffman):
Install the network time protocol daemon. This will allow you to sync your system time over the internet.
    sudo pacman -S ntp
Once installed, run the following command:
    ntpdate pool.ntp.org
This will link your computer with the time servers of the NTP Pool Project. For me my clocks fixed themselves quickly after running the command. And that was it.
After running this command and setting the system clock, run:
    hwclock -systohc      (thanks Scimmia)
Otherwise the computer will mistake local time for UTC and subtract/add time based upon your timezone again upon reboot.

Scimmia wrote:Not exactly. The root of the problem is that your hardware clock is set to localtime. To change this, you need to update the system (software) clock, which ntpd already did for you. The timedatectl command would have just done that manually. Now that your system clock is correct, you need to write this to your hardware clock so that it is correct when you reboot. hwclock --systohc does that. If you don't run that command, the system will boot up thinking it's getting UTC from the hardware clock and will subtract 5 hours. Then, once ntpd runs, the time will skip ahead 5 hours. This will cause all kinds of issues.
I fixed this on my system too. Thanks for the explanation.

  • Boot fail after system clock changed

    Hi!
I've changed the system clock in BIOS, after that I've got an error message.
Grub was loading until reached the /dev/sda3 check and suddenly stopped and asked the root pass.
Unfortunately I wasn't able to type in my pass because of hu_HU charset.
After that I restored the original date and now everything is fine except the date (At the moment the date is: 2009 Monday 17:35:13)
How Can I set up the correct date and what was that error?
    I appreciate every help.
    Thx.

MadTux wrote:Did you see an error message? Could have been a problem with the file system. I guess if the date in the file system is before the current date, this could cause problems. Why not use ntp? Then you always have the correct time.
That was the problem I guess. I don't know ntp. I was wondering if you'd tell me more about ntp.

    Thanks in advance!!

Sorry for the useless post but:
    1) Arch forums are amazing, I use arch exclusively now, but I always go t google first, find a few bad results, go to the arch forums and find a solution rapidly, here is another case of that.
    2) The names of the users in this post are "ILoveJapaneseGirls" and "IHateJapaneseDolphinKille"... that is amazing.
