New 1.5 Tb startup drive gives "program error"

I installed a much larger startup drive on my Mac G5 (1.5 Tb). I did a fresh install of Photoshop CS but whenever I try to start a new file or open an old one I get the dreaded "could not create new document because of a program error" message.
Tried dumping the preferences. Still doesn't work. But using the same copy of Photoshop after starting with a different (smaller) startup drive works. It also works if I start the Mac in safe mode.
So I suspect the 1.5 Tb drive as a startup device but don't know how to fix it.

Is it a Seagate 1.5 TB drive? If so it might need a firmware update. Did you get the Drive from Newegg?
If so more then likely it might need a update firmware or actually you may have to reset the serial number as they have had issues with internal and external drives which have a specific glitch were the serial numbers are eronious and there is a way to fix it contact Seagate or look for the issue on their site.
If it is not Seagate then it is probably not the drive. If it is Seagate and this is the problem it will probably crash anyway. So the good news is once the problem is fixed it works like a charm.
I have an external one which does not have the problem and have been working with it for almost three months and it works very well and is fortunately not one of the bugged out items.
Good luck I actually hope you have one with the problem as it is easy to fix and easy to determine if you have one that has this problem. The drive is good just the setting of the serial or perhaps it was the firmware number.
Contact Seagate if that is your drive. They have since fix the problem so you really should not have gotten an older one.

  • Photoshop gives "Program Error" when I try to open files while VPN

I think this may be a new one. While VPN on my company network, Photoshop CS cannot open any files. Either drag and drop, double click or even file open command. You get the clock and the message "failed to open because of a Program Error.... " or something close to that. I'm sure it says Program Error though. Works fine if I'm not VPN but soon as I'm on it stops opening files or even creating a new blank canvas gives that error. I checked Adobe forum and nothing there to find about this one. Anyone else have this happen?

    Hi, SSI.
    1. What VPN client are you using?
As a guess, your VPN client may be blocking a port that PS CS may use for license verification over the Internet. The fact that it works AOK when not using the VPN would tend to support this hypothesis. As to what port it may be attempting to use, I can't say, but you may be able to find this out from Adobe and then work with your firm's networking staff to see if this port can be opened for use when the VPN is active.
    2. You noted that you "checked Adobe forum and nothing there to find about this one." Did you post to the Adobe Photoshop forum? If not, I recommend doing so.
    3. You wrote: "You get the clock and the message "failed to open because of a Program Error.... " or something close to that. I'm sure it says Program Error though."As FYI, in cases such as this, copying down the exact text of the message is helpful.

  • Moving Time Machine backsups to another hard drive gives an error??

My current 250gb HD that Time Machine was putting my backups on has gone sour. So.. I bought a 1.5TB Seagate for time Machine. I moved what I could from the old Time Machine HD (which still shows up in the finder) but I can't move the Backups.backupdb file which houses all my backups. I get an error "-1426"
    What should I do?

The new drive I formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The old one is simply Mac OS Extended.
And the *Partition Map Scheme?* That needs to be either +Apple Partition Map+ or GUID. Check by clicking the top line for the drive in Disk Utility's sidebar; it will be shown at the bottom.
I cant "repair" the old backup drive. Disk Utility freaks out. Whenever I restart the computer, I get a pop up saying that the disk "Time Machine" could not be repaired... blah blah blah.
Ah, then they can't be copied, either (and would you really want to copy corrupted backups?)
+Disk Warrior+ or another such app might be able to repair them.
    Otherwise, they're unusable.
If you haven't already, partition the new drive, so Time Machine has it's own, exclusive space. See #4 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • My Matshita Optical drive gives me error messages that burning DVD's is NOT supported ?

I record and burn audio weekly. I dried burning DVD projects and i get the repeated error message the the drive does not support DVD burning.
Same result trying to burn from the Finder or Disk Utility. Anyone have a work around?

Do you get this error message with all current burn attempts, or simply with your most recent project?
If not, a PRAM reset has been known to be helpful.
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

I've just bought a new iMac with 2 TB hard drive. Can I partition the startup drive?

The reason I'm considering partitioning is - I'm going to transfer about 50 GB of family photos & music to the iMac. Over time the photos & music library is going to grow. My idea was to point the iphoto & itunes library to the new partition so that the application programs (that will will reside in partition 1), will not get congested with photos & music over time & degrade performance. Also, I dabble a little bit with the music editing program LOGIC & Sound Track Pro, which creates lots of little music files in the process.
In your case I would strongly recommend against partitioning, as dwb mentions a drive loaded with data on an
O SX system doesn't equate to  performance loss. However partitioning does. If you were going to tell me you were partitioning to load different OS's on the computer then you would have a good reason to think about partitioning. My suggestion is do not partition.
What I would also recommend is getting some high quality high speed external HD's to store your photo and music libraries on. This helps keept the 2GB drive available while maintaining performance. I have 3 external HD's attached to my iMac, two are backup drives (1 Time Machine & 1 Bootable Clone) the third drive is for storing my my music, photo & movie libraries on. If you go this route the 3 drives I'd recommend are:

    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
    http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?id=10330
Personally I use the Lacie's however OWC or G-Tech would also be welcome on my desk.
Again if you want to take this path Apple has instructions for how to move the libraries to EHDs, if you want those links let me know.

  • How do I install a new startup drive

My startup drive on my Mac Pro running Mac OS X 10.7.5 is full and I need to replace it with a 2T drive. How do I go about changing over the data and rebooting with the new drive?

Put the new drive into one of the empty bays.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Quit DU and boot from the Recovery HD:
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new disk drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

    Iko,
Just to eliminate any possibility you have a Lombard with the faulty CPU, download PPC Checker here:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3CARDS/PPCchecker/
    If it reports this number...
    PowerPC 750L (LoneStar, Rev2.2) Copper G3 PVR = 0x00088202
...you have a CPU that cannot run OSX with memory in the top memory slot; however, 9.x runs just fine with the max of 512MB (2x256) in the memory slots. PPC Checker is a 9.x app and you must be booted to 9.x (CD or HD) to run it. since you have reset the PRAM, I would also reset the power manager.

  • How do I create a new startup drive?

Once I get a larger drive installed to replace the 80 GB drive that came with my G5, what is the safest way to create the new startup drive?

    Gi-
The best way to get going on a new drive is, after formatting the drive with Disk Utility, download SuperDuper and clone the old drive to the new drive.
The free version is excellent, and totally reliable,
The paid version makes keeping backup clones easy.

If you have the disc and your new machine has a disc drive then use those.  If you need to download then you can download thru the following page and use your serial number from the disc to activate...
    PSE 10, 11, 12,13 - http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/photoshop-elements-10-11-downloads.html
You can also download the trial version of the software thru the page linked below and then use your current serial number to activate it.
Be sure to follow the steps outlined in the Note: Very Important Instructions section on the download pages at this site and have cookies enabled in your browser or else the download will not work properly.

  • I installed the latest version of Firefox last night. It worked 3-4 times flawlessly. Now, it crashes at startup and gives me a box with crash detail report. How can I fix this?

I have a brand new HP dv8t laptop that is straight from the manufacturer 2 days ago.
Last night, I attempted to download and installed the latest version of Firefox. After installing, it worked great for an hour or so (3.4 different sessions).
Then, this morning when I came back to the computer, Firefox crashes at startup and gives me the option of finding a solution online or quitting the program.
    How aggravating!
I have installed this same version on 2 other computers that I own, without any issue.
I have attempted to uninstall Firefox from the dv8 and reinstalling, to no avail.
I cannot find the crash report, but I do this see this message once the app crashes:

You might try using the add-on 'NoSquint' which allows numerous zoom options specific to each page you visit & keeps your settings - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nosquint/
If you want to go back to 3.6x, you will find it here:

In most cases you can simply "upgrade" (meaning downgrade) directly from the installation. It would be a good idea to save your passwords & bookmarks just to be on the safe side.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?
