New 11i install - how many nodes

We are looking to install the Financials modules of 11i (AP/AR/FA/GL) and trying to decide on platform out of Red Hat Linux and AIX 5L both of which we are familiar with.
One thing that will influence this decision is the number of nodes required.
How do we decide if a single node install will suffice ?
Is this purely a performance/sizing issue, or are there other factors (ease of install/patching ?).
Is a 2 node install more standard ?
We will have approx. 40 concurrent users, we will be importing approx. 7000 AR invoice lines and 700 AP invoice lines daily.
Any advice or pointers to documents/discussions gratefully received.
Thanks,
Colin

OCS on Linux was one of the most miserable installations I have ever done. There was anote on Metalink that said the most important thing for installing OCS on Linux was to know what you are doing (or more to the point, what to do for every failure).
If you go with Linux, you can have up a 1.7 GB SGA. Most people set sga_target for 11i on Linux and let the database dynamically adjust db_cache_size and shared_pool size as it wants throughout operation. For 40-50 users, you should only need 1-2 GB of pga_aggregate_target.
The amount of RAM consumed by sessions is trickier to estimate. In an 11.5.10.2 instance with no users, you will have at least 100 sessions. 40-50 concurrent users will have at least 2 sessions, most likely 5 or 10, depending on how many forms they open. I see 5.6 GB of UGA/PGA memory used by 254 sessions, so that averages to about 20MB each. The amount of UGA/PGA varies drastically as some processes use very little and some use hundreds of MB. Also, each forms process tend to average about 50 MB per open form. The applications processes will need at least 2 GB for JVMs, concurrent managers etc.
When you add it all up, it is tough to fit a 50 user production 11.5.10.2 system on 8 GB of RAM. 16 GB is actually pushing it as well. I have 50-60 users on a single node 32 GB Sun V440 that usually sits around 15GB free. They have not finished implementing all products and users, so I pushed for 32 GB over 16 to avoid paging problems when they are fully utilized.

You can install the software on as many computers as you like.
However you can only activate the software and use it on a maximum of two computers at any one time.

  • How many nodes does 10g support

    Hi,
Am I right in thinking that the Oracle 10g Grid has a central node which co-ordinates the 10g grid? If so how many nodes can a single management node support. Can it support more 10g apps servers than 10g database servers?
Thanks in advance for you help
    Michael

Do you know if there is a limit on the number of machines you can have in a Grid?
r.- that same question somebody asked in an Oracle Partner day in my country and the orator told us that
there is not limit, inclusive he spoke something related
to it making reference to the INFINITE BAND feature or
    characteristic that 10g has.
Now RAC has a limit of nodes but really in real live
RAC is limited by the numbers of nodes that the OS cluster
can support. Most of the RAC in the world are of 2,3 or
    4 Nodes.
I guess this Grid is buliding on the RAC technology. Is there a limit on the number of nodes the Enterprise manager can manage?
r.- The main purpose of the GRID CONTROL is almost the
same that Enterprise manager has Now. According to what
I know there is not limit for adding entries in the OEM
repository to control a lot of nodes. I assume that there
is not going to be limit too in 10g.
Is the Enterprise manager responsible for job management within the Grid?
r.- Yes, as OEM does now.
If I had a Grid which contained 100 Application servers would the Enterprise Manager be responsible for job allocation and resource management?
r.- According to the structure you will be able to
manage all that without any problem but we have to wait
what are the high rules to administer and configure all
    this enviroment.
I am going to post more specific details about your
questions here with the documents that suuport them.

  • How many nodes can I run?

Ok, in the (hopefully temporary) abscence of 4-processor G5 support from Apple, I can node my other half of the G5 Quad to itself, but can I also add my Pb 1.25Ghz as a node at the same time?
    If so, any ideas how?

Theoretically, you can run as many nodes as you want I guess - But I'd imagine there would become a point where bandwidth is saturated and adding more nodes wouldn't make any difference.
Sure you can add your PB, but I think that only has 100mbps networking capabillity, so performance won't be as good.
Network your two Macs together, preferably via a hub or switch, install the node on your PB and make sure it's running, make sure Logic sees the node, then activate your tracks with the select buttons.
    I don't think I've missed anything out.

  • New Install - How Many Machines?

I am new to In Design 4 / CS4. Two people in our church office need to work on and share the same files, myself and my assistant. Most of our creativity software (for music) allows us install on two computers. When we purchase ID4, can we install it on both computers? (We use a PC and a laptop) It would be nice, since the church cannot afford to buy more than one package of it.
    Thanks! - SC

While the license allows installation on two computers, it only allows for non-concurrent use, as Peter S. noted.
However, Adobe's non-profit licensing may help. Check out:

Not sure if this is the right forum. Please re-direct me if necessary.
My hard drive crashed last week. Files were non-recoverable. I installed a new hard drive, new OS, and new apps.
Question: How do I now write to my external hard disk? Before my hard drive crashed I had set my external to sharing with "read only." Now, with my new hard drive and OS, I can only "read only." But I use that disk to store backup files and I want to use it with Time Machine. So how can I write to it?

Theoretically as much as you want but there are technical limitations about the usable bandwidth in the wireless or by the used access point.
All participants (stations) in a wireless network share the available bandwhith equally and therefore a point will get reached where the throughput in the network became insufficient to stream music.
Also some routers limit the number of stations could get connected. For instance Apples Airport Extreme have a limit of 50 connected clients and the AP-Express (if used as access point) a limit of 10 simultaneous connections.

  • How many maximum nodes possible in RAC 10g

    Hi,
This is for my knowledge only.
Any idea that how many RAC nodes is possible in 10g maximum.
    Thanks and regards,
    Chitrasen

    Hi Chitrasen :
    From MetaLink:
"How many nodes are supported in a RAC Database?:
With 10g Release 2, we support 100 nodes in a cluster using Oracle Clusterware, and 100 instances in a RAC database. Currently DBCA has a bug where it will not go beyond 63 instances. There is also a documentation bug for the max-instances parameter. With 10g Release 1 the Maximum is 63. In 9i it is platform specific due to the different clusterware support by vendors. See the platform specific FAQ for 9i."
So, for 10g R2, looks like 63... lots more than most sites will ever use, I suspect!

  • Render Farm - How do nodes Work?

    Hello,
My name is Anatoly and I've recently set up a rendering farm connected to an I-Mac as a file-server.
The Problem: Not all nodes come to work together on a project, some arbitrarily choosing to render the assets while others just watching the watch folder idly.
The Computer Setup: There are six headless nodes (all Mac-Minis). The hardware and OS specifications are below.
    MAC-MINI Farm:
    2.66Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4Gb 1067 Mhz DDR3 RAM, NVIDIA Geforce 320M 256Mb, OSX 10.8
    2.66Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4Gb 1067 Mhz DDR3 RAM, NVIDIA Geforce 320M 256Mb, OSX 10.8
    2.3Ghz Intel i5, 4Gb 1333Mhz DD3 RAM, Intel HD Graphics 3000 384Mb, OSX 10.7.5
    2.3Ghz Intel i5, 4Gb 1333Mhz DD3 RAM, Intel HD Graphics 3000 384Mb, OSX 10.8.5
    2.3Ghz Intel i5, 4Gb 1333Mhz DD3 RAM, Intel HD Graphics 3000 384Mb, OSX 10.7.5
    2.3Ghz Intel i5, 4Gb 1333Mhz DD3 RAM, Intel HD Graphics 3000 384Mb, OSX 10.7.5
    I-MAC File Server:
    2.5Ghz Intel i5, 4Gb 1333Mhz DD3 RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512Mb, OSX 10.7.4
    The Software Setup:
Each MAC-MINI node has a copy of After Effect CC Render Engine (version 12.0.0.404) running at startup and set to run in Watch Folder mode.
On the machine that is used to manipulate assets for rendering the following procedure is used:
    Open a project
    Add assets to render queue
Set Render Settings to Multi-Machine Settings
Check box in settings to “Skip existing files (allows multi-machine rendering)
Set Output Module to Multi-Machine Sequence
    Select my desired output settings
Then I click File – Dependencies – Collect Files
In Collect Files Setup the following is chosen:
    Collect Source Files: All
Change Render Output to: “custom name” folder
    Enable Watch Folder render
Reveal collected project in Finder when finished
    Maximum Number of Machines: 10
I then click Collect and save my project to a Watch Folder
From there-onwards, presumably, the Render Farm is now supposed to render out my project, but not all nodes of my 6-node farm work together. More often than not, a single (or two) node(s) render the projects while the others wait idly, watching the Watch Folder.
Can anyone please advise me of why this happens, and perhaps what step I’m missing if any to get all my nodes to render until the project is done?
    Thank you,
    -Anatoly

Here's a picture of render items in my queue, follwed by a picture of how many nodes are working on it:

  • How many objects are created?

I have this question which some one posted to me.
He asked me how many objects are created when an object of a simple class is created for example
    class A{
    public static void main(String args[])
    A a1 = new A();
Now how many objects are created? I think only one. Can anyone tell me if any other objects are also created.
    Plz tell me .

No, the answer is indeed 1. All the other objects
(including the String[] in the main method
parameters) are created outside of the A
class, either by the JVM itself or by some other
class that calls the A.main() method. You can try
this out for yourself by adding a constructor such as
    A()
    System.out.println("Creating class A");
} and see what prints out.Take a closer look at the question:
how many objects are created when an object of a
simple class is created for exampleIt doesn't say "how many objects of type A are created".
I.e. The VM has to load class A before you can create an object from it, and thus an object of type Class is created. There are also a bunch of other objects which needs to be created before you can instantiate A.
