New 13" MBP Retina - Kernel Panics

I've had this computer for about 3 days now and probably have had a half dozen or so kernel panics. Below the log from the last one. Suggestions?

  • Retina MBP Gets Kernel Panic If I Apply Moderate Pressure To Left Of Trackpad

It's happened a lot to me; I would be working on my computer, feel the inclination to rest my elbow on it, then my computer freezes, crashes, then tells me it suffered a kernel panic.
What is going on? Is this normal? Do other RMBP owners know about this?

    JohannesK2,
have you tried running your MacBook Pro’s Apple Diagnostics, to see if it can detect a problem with its RAM?

  • MacBook Pro Retina, Kernel Panic on Boot

I'm completely puzzled by this and hope someone can help.
The background (in case it's important) is the following: I have a Retina MBP running 10.8.2.  I want to use filevault on the SSD but whenever I tried to enable it, it fails with the message about the boot file being unable to be written (and the log has CoreStorage error messages in it).  So I assumed that something had gotten corrupted in the past (e.g., when I transferred from my old MacBook Pro or updated to 10.8) and resolved to reformat the SSD, do a complete fresh install and then use the Migration Assistant to bring everything across from a backup disk.  It all sounded so easy, what could possibly go wrong?
The situation now is that when I use Migration Assistant to transfer the "Applications" across to the reformatted SSD, the system crashes with a kernel panic on reboot (if I just transfer user documents and system settings but not Applications, everything is fine).
Before getting to this point, the system crashed once on booting but from the trace I saw that there was a single third-party kext (from Parallels for usb - a product which I no longer use) that I removed (from /System/Library/Extensions) which on the first reboot was the last kext loaded before the crash.
However on rebooting, the system still crashes.  As you can see, all of the loaded kext appear to be from Apple - there does not appear to be a single third-party one in the bunch.
    Any suggestions/advice/solutions much appreciated.
System: MBP 10,1; Mac OS X 10.8.2 (all available updates applied)

Run through this fix it list, don't use Filevault it's cracked anyway, you have to give up the password to the law and Apple to fix it, so it's basically useless and hampers your performance and recovery efforts.

  • My NEW Macbook Pro & repeated Kernel panic

I just got my Macbook Pro for a Christmas present. I bought it from Infinity Micro in California.
I "migrated" and after a short time programs weren't openining, every program I tried would quit and I was getting Kernel panic and then sometimes I'd see a black screen that said something about Darwin and login. I took the disks and tried to do a fresh clean install erasing the hard drive at the same time and restoring everything to defaults. I spent HALF the day on this yesterday, 8 times I tried installing and it would get almost all the way through and quit telling me the intstallation failed. Of course the computer wouldn't start anymore. Finally on the 9th attempt, the entire system installed and everything was fresh. I only loaded my documents and iphoto library then I started using the computer. Everytime I went to a Safari page that had quick time Safari would crash. I tried downloading Quicktime and it wouldn't download (wouldn't install). I restarred and got a screen that was half black half blue telling me to hold down the power key and restart. After 7 attempts, I was still getting this black/blue screen with the restart message.
At this point I don't know what to do! I don't want a defective brand new computer and the vendor, Infinity Micro, is telling me I have to go to Apple for support. I really dont' want them to "fix" this machine. I just want a replacement with a non-defective unit. The merchant's return policy said they covered defective products within the first 30 days.
This morning the computer turned on and is "so far" working well. I do not want an erratic behaving almost $3000 computer!
    What would you do?

It may be that the RAM modules are not seated properly. Many problems can be tracked to bad RAM or poor RAM installation.
    Try this...
    Power down your computer.
    Unplug the power cable.
    Remove the battery.
Access the RAM modules... unseat each and replace it.
    Button up the computer.
    Reinstall the battery.
Plug in the computer and turn it on.

  • No "Low Battery" warning on new (November 07) MacBook - Kernel Panic

    Hello,
I'm not sure is this is the right forum for this, but since the problem occurs during a specific battery state, I'm going to post it here.
I just got one of the new November 07 MacBooks. The machine is great, and screams with the pre-installed Leopard.
First thing I did was plug it in to charge as I started configuring software. Once it was fully charged, I pulled the plug, and began using it on battery. My plan was to calibrate the battery, by running it all the way until it forced a sleep, then shutting down and plugging it in again, as Apple recommends.
Problem is, I never got the "Low Battery" warning, or even the sleep warning. At around 10 minutes of power left, I simply got a kernel panic. A few seconds later, the laptop just switched off.
I plugged in again for a few minutes, then ran it down again to see if I could reproduce the error, and I did get the low battery warning.
The next time the battery ran down, it gave me the kernel panic.
Is this happening to anyone else? Is it a new MacBook problem, or a leopard power management problem? I'm having no other issues at all with the MacBook or Leopard. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

I'm a little hesitant to force a firmware update on a MacBook it wasn't meant for. These are brand new models, and I would think Apple didn't ship them with the known faulty batteries or bad firmware.
The frustrating thing is I have no way of knowing who the culprit is. Is it the brand new OS that I'm sure has a fair share of bugs? Is it the new hardware having a power control issue? Or is it a combination of Leopard and the new hardware? I was hoping to find some users who had the same problem so I could narrow it down. Battery drains out, kernel panic, then the machine shuts off after a few seconds. Funny thing is, the indicator says I have like 10 minutes or so left, but it appears that the battery must be completely dead, since it forces a panic and the machine just dies. So it might be a calibration error. The Mac thinks it has some juice, but in reality it's just about dead.
I made an appointment for the Apple store tomorrow, so we'll see what they have to say. It's otherwise running beautifully, thankfully.

  • Brandnew macbook pro retina kernel panic

    Dear community,
last week I bought the brandnew macbook pro retia 13". Since then I've experienced two kernel panics.
Below I've added the recently occuring one.
The MBP is connected to an external display, to a keyboard via USB and to a bluetooth mouse.
Anyone have an idea what's the reason for this? Unfortunately I can't read these panic codes.
I'm thinking of returning or changig the mbp.
    Thank you,
    Sebastian

  • 2011 MBP throwing Kernel Panics

    Hello all,
User is complaining of spontaneous system freezings. I just upgraded the RAM in a 2011 MBP model. Now running 16GB Crucial memory. Ran AST MRI and system passed. Trying to run the cooling system test and the computer is continually throwing a kernel panic at me?
If you could help that would be great -- thank you!

RAM and hard drive/SSD are 2 totally separate peices of hardware. HDD/SSD store data that is read by the system to load the OS and programs and put that data into Memory so it can be displayed on the screen and interacted with.
If the HDD/SSD is not supplying the correct, read that as corrupted, data to the memory that can cause panics. If the HDD/SSD is supplying non corrupted data to memory and you are getting KP then the RAM is faulty and corrupting it.
KPs can be caused by many different things. Faulty HDD/SSD, bad RAM, bad files on the HDD/SSD or some other faulty peice of hardware in the system.
Since you stated you just changed the RAM and you never said it had KPs before the RAM change that is the first place I would start trouble shooting. You never mentioned changing the drive to a SSD so if the SSD worked fine with the old RAM the SSD is fine.

  • 2011 MBP Frequent Kernel Panics

I recently purchased a 17" MBP with 4GB of RAM. For the first several weeks the machine worked flawlessly, but then it suddenly started giving me constant kernel panics. It seems completely reproducible, as it often occurs when watching video online, although I have had instances where the machine panics while coding a webpage or even saving a file to DropBox. Here is my latest (out of 11) log:

  • New RAM stopped my Kernel Panics on a MacBook

I upgraded my Duo Core 1.83gHZ White MacBook to 2GB of RAM almost three years ago when purchased new.
Sometime after upgrading to Leopard I started having frequent kernel panics. I ran Memtest several times and it never found a problem. I blamed Leopard and/or the MacBook itself as the machine was very stable under Tiger.
About a month ago re-installed the MB's original 512MB of RAM and ran the machine for a few days without a single KP. Running a MB with 512MB or RAM is painful, so say the least...
I ordered two 1GB sticks from a well-known company and the MacBook has run kernel panic free ever since, about three weeks now.
Unfortunately the old RAM was not a lifetime warranty product. It cost me $176 back then. The new RAM was $30. :-O
I hope others can learn from my painful lesson. I guess my biggest surprise is that the RAM seemingly went bad at some point.

just had mine mended from apple

  • Brand new mba - stuck in kernel panic loop

I purchased a brand new macbook air today. When I went to turn it on, the screen was stuck in a kernel panic loop.

Have you installed anything?  That is to say did it come up initially, and you then installed something (like an anti-virus package) and now it panics?
if it came out of the box panic'ing then contact Apple and have it replaced under warranty.  Or make a Genius bar appointment at an Apple Store.  If you purchased it at an Apple Store, go back and tell them it is defective.
You can try to booting in Safe Mode, especially if you have managed to install software
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>
Safe Mode should boot up without loading any 3rd party additions.
If you do manage to boot up in Safe Mode and you did previously manage to install software, you can run EtreCheck to see what 3rd party software is installed and then proceed from there to remove it

  • MBP / Firewire - Kernel Panic on wakeup

I guess this issue is reported over and over again by now.
My MBP (late 2007) has a problem with Firewire Audio-Interfaces.
I use a Terratec Phase 24 and Apogee Duet and everytime I put the Computer to sleep it causes a Kernel-Panic on wakeup. I've submitted the report for about 60+ times to apple. Still no fix so far.... And it's a well known issue around the net. Even Apogee and Terratec say that there's a bug in the core FWAudio from Apple.
This is kinda annonying and I think the mac has always been a professional tool for professional sound artists - but this bug makes my MBP useless
Please Apple - Do something about it!
If anyone might have any hints - just shout

  • MBP C2D: Kernel Panics all over (11 days old)

    Hi,
my freshly arrived MBP C2D 15'' is a bit nervous.
    It panics a lot!
I use it for 11 days now and got about 25 kernel panics, about 15 of it yesterday. Usualy while doing really simple stuff, even while doing nothing(!), like reading a webpage or a mail (not clicking, scrolling or doing anything).
Worst case I had only safari and adium as active applications.
It says "unresolved kernel trap" in the panic.log.
It even hang on bootup, about one second after pushing the button. It than paniced with "no driver for this platform: acpi". It took me several trys, booting windows, resetting pram and finally starting in save mode to boot again into MacOS X.
    Any ideas?
BTW: I have an uneven backlight too, but it isn't worth the effort to send it back.
    MBP C2D 15'' Mac OS X (10.4.8)

They surely didn't do an 'Archive and install', cause
I did not find any backup with old data. (Not that I had left much data to be lost...)
So at least they did a 'clean and install'.
Yeah, zeroing out a drive takes time. But long term test do too. So does a MLB replacement. So I leave it up to the Support do decide if its the best (or first) thing to do. They are the experts, aren't they?
OK, Apple could reproduce my errors and they changed the MLB. And your advice is that I should have no "reason to suppose that this point that you have anything but a software issue". OK. Your opinion.
I can't recall if all panics happend with the AC adapter pluged in or not. But I got them pluged in to power outlets several hundred kilometers appart. So if it was about power fluctuations, they should be random an minimal, and well within spec.
"Apple can only be responsible for so much"
Yes. They are responsible for delivering to me a product (both hard- and software) which fulfils any advertised properties including anything from common practice.
An advertised property is "works out of the box". Which means to me, I don't have to zero out my HD and re-install my OS just to use it.
Something from common practice is, that I can install third party software. Apple is not responsible for that software, but (at least during the one-year waranty) I'm not the one who has to prove which software causes an error. (Of course they will make me pay, if they prove it was the third party software)
Another thing from common practice is, that a computer has to be reliable to a certain degree. In my opinion this is clearly more than a week. If this is longer than they are willing to wait to reproduce the error: not my problem.
I just have to prove the error exists. I don't have to make the error reproducable by them.
I'm sorry if all this sounded harsh to you. But I'm a little bit fed up with the situation. It's not that cheap to by a Mac. All I wan't is to use what I have bought.

  • My MBP is Kernel Panicing, and I see the Crash Report is at 107% CPU

My fans are spinning quickly, and the whole thing sounds like a Jet Plane, even when no programs are open.  I have been to the Genius bar 3 times this week.
They keep looking at it, doing disk checks, repairing permissions, then I left it with them for 3 days.  They ran "diagnostic tests", but still came back with nothing.
They finally agreed to wipe my Hard Drive.  Since I got it back Friday night, I had one more kernel panic, and I've managed to update Mountain Lion...but the Crash Report thing is still going on.
It's pretty obvious that the Genius bar here in London doesn't have a clue how to fix this, so what should I do?

Here's the one from last night.

  • MBP having Kernel Panic (Crash) all the time due to Wireless card firmware.

    Hi all,
I am desperately needing helps from the experts here now. I have the latest santa rosa Macbook Pro. It has been crashing on me lately due to the wireless card firmware. I have run all the latest updates from software update including the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I have tried to reformat the hard drive and installed a fresh and clean Mac OSX. The crash still persists before AND after the AirPort.Atheros firmware update. I mean I was not having this issue when I first bought the computer while others were whining all over the internet about this problem. When the fix came out, everyone
s problems seem to be solved but my problem arose . A recent Kernel panic crash log is as following:
    panic(cpu 1 caller 0x0035D113): freeing free mbuf

A way to know that the crash is gonna happen is that the internet stops working and as long as I click on the wifi icon on the menu bar, The crash occurs. Could someone please help to put me out of misery please . Thank you so much for reading this and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thank you
    Have a nice day.

i would try this in a test user to see if the issue occurs (more than likely it will)also i would reset the smc and the pram
(test user) go to the apple then system preferences then accounts then in the bottom right hand corner you will see there is a lock click it and put in the password for the computer then click ok then click the plus sign and create the test user make sure that you check the box that says allow user to admin the account then click create account (if a message says something about automatic login click keep) then click the apple and log out then login to the other user.
(smc) you shut the computer down then you unplugg all the cables from the computer then you take the battery out with the battery out you hold the power button down for five seconds then you put the battery back then plug in the ac adapter then start the comptuer up and then plug everything else back in
(pram) you restart the computer holding down the apple option P and R keys till you hear the start up chime twice
if that does not work i would boot to the install disk one holding c and then click utilites from the top and select the mac hd and then verify disk and repair disk
if the issue still occurs then i would back all of the information on the computer up and erase and install
    hope this helps

  • Brand new C2D 20" imac kernel panics daily

I have tried everything to diagnose and troubleshoot and it continues to kernel panic on a daily basis...
I have reinstalled the OS twice, removed programs, removed peripheals, called AppleCare... and nothing. I am reluctant to take it into the store until I have some sort of clue as to what is causing it...
