New 15" MBP w/Retina power connector

I don'tknow about the rest of you who have Retina display MBP's with Apple's crazy new connector on the MBP side but I for one am having serious issues with mine.
I can't even pick up the laptop by the bottonm case without causing just enough "drag" to pull out the connector. I can't move it off my laptop or pick it up off my lap without the connector falling out.
I'm sorry but this has to be the absolute WORST power connector Apple has ever made.   Is anyone having similar experiences?    Or did I just get a real lemon for a power supply and cable.
TIA,
Peter W.

This version does seem to be more easily detached than the previous incarnations. So far it hasn't bothered me, and I may eventually end up viewing it as an improvement.

  • Should I buy a brand new 13'' MBP with retina display or a refurbished 15'' retina?

Im not sure what is the best option.Because I've always had big screen laptops. But the brand new 15 inch retina is way too expensive.I'm able to pay the price for a refurbished one, but is it worth it?
    Thanks

If you're doing graphics, video etc. retina is probably worth it. Its a matter of personal preference whether 13" or 15".. although the graphics card in the 15" has the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M card. I suspect the 15" graphics is faster and perhaps better for gaming but I cannot quote the performance statistics for you.

  • Macbook Pro regular 2012 vs 2013 MBP with retina

I am deciding whether to get a new 2012 MBP, non retina, 4gb/500gb/ with dvd rom or the new MBP with retina. My needs are basic, nothing to advanced. I can get MPR for $950 out the door. I dont want to buy something I really dont need or will use. Any thoughts?

PS: side-by-side specs, graphics and drive data rates,
the newer of the two may be the better one to get, as
it has later Thunderbolt  with higher capacities, too.
Look into mactracker or other specification chart that
can be opened beside each other (as I have now) &
then you can see sections in each model, one at a
    time. MacTracker shows general-software-memory+
    graphics-connections-history by category.
2013 model Thunderbolt, Hard Drive Interface, graphics
spec all look good. Not sure if the history of graphic issue
in the dual-graphic card model 2012, was overcome or not.
However this may require some research...
If yours is one that shipped with Mavericks OS X 10.9
you may do well to get a copy of the installer on a
USB and dedicate it as a backup or set up a second
drive or other device to safe a download of the installer
and/or a copy-clone of the Mavericks. The limited total
of RAM available may not be a problem, with both units
shipping with an SSD and not a rotational HDD. And if
you like (& if yours has OS X 10.9) you could then use
OS X 10.10 too.  Be careful an 'upgrade' isn't done to
an older system by accident; surprises aren't so nice.
With either choice, be sure to get & make suitable backup
of your files in addition to a device to use Time Machine.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Wi-Fi Dropping MBP w/ Retina Display

I'm having trouble w/ wi-fi dropping off frequently on a new 15" MBP w/ Retina Display. Is there a solid fix? Thx.

Since you're still under warranty, you should take the machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them run diagnostics on the machine. It could be a screen problem, a GPU problem, etc.
I've not seen many posts from Retina users about 'screen flickering' here - best to get it fixed while you're still under warranty (and now may be a good time to think about getting the AppleCare Protection Plan to stretch your warranty from one year to three).
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Car Charger for MBP - magnetic power connector

I have looked - honest - but cannot find any query on forums regarding the topic of car chargers for MBP's(the new mag power connector).
The "blurb" on the Apple Store web pages for the MBP is "Designed for life on the road", can't quite see how that boast can live up to it's claim, if there is no means of maintaining power to the MBP.
I know there are power inverters for previous MBP models, but am unable to locate one which matches the new power connectors. Are there any out there???

There is no "specific" inverter for the MagSafe connectors, because Apple has not made one and they have not licensed out the MagSafe design. (There are no "+power inverters for previous MBP models+" since all MBPs have MagSafe connectors. There were power inverters for the PowerBook/iBook lines.)
You can use any standard inverter with an AC plug connection, provided it delivers the 85 W your MBP adapter needs. Then, plug the inverter into your auto power port and plug the MBP's power adapter into the inverter.
Here's an example from Amazon for the north American-style plug.
    Hope this helps...

  • I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display and battery starts at 8 hr charge and drops to 7 hr in just 30 minutes of run time. This is not what I expected from Apple!!

I've installed 10.8.1 on new MBP w/ retina display. Fully charged battery shows 8 hrs at 100% then drops to 7 hrs after only 1/2 hr of use. I was hoping that 10.8.1 would have fixed a obviously well publicized defect.

Sorry pal, not this time.  The release notes for 10.8.1 do not discuss anything about battery issues.  I do know Apple is aware of the problem thought and are working on a fix, hopefully in the forthcoming 10.8.2.

  • New FX5900 TD128 - Power Connector?

    Hello everyone,
I just bought a new FX5900 TD128 card to replace my FX5600, but before I install it, could abyone tell me what the power connector on the card is for? Do I need to connect it to the power supply, or is there some other specific purpose for it? Sorry if its a silly question, but I don't want to risk damaging my new card and the manual does not mention it at all.
    Grateful for your advice.
    Thanks
    Orcnobeard.

I measured the current drawn from it, something like 3A from the 12V and 3A from the 5V so that's about 50W, way more than just powering the fans.
The card will work without the plug, but the fans won't spin and the card will prevent you from entering 3D mode to prevent overheating.

  • Macbook pro Retina 15" a/c power connector melting

    hello everyone!
not sure if anyone can assist here and have knowledge of past experience or even apple support calls resolution about my issue with my Macbook pro retina 2012 model --- the magnetic power connector from the magsafe 2 is overheating and has burned out 2 out of 5 pins on the connector itself and 2 of the laptop one i can clearly see them black and all burned out. this means the power to the laptop is now inconsistent and i have to giggle withe the adaptor to find the right position and once i do the light goes from green to orange after a few attempts --- but then the connect gets really hot ( as much as i can not touch it again )
    question:
the laptop is out of warranty --- this seems to me a fault or a unique issue with this machine a/c power would it be looked at by apple support as a special out of warranty?
if not what would be the costs of repairing both he magsafe 2 (i have bought one now on the web ) and repairing the laptop power connection to ensure it does not happen again and burns out the machine or even god forbid it catches fire?
    regards

  • Bluetooth Audio Streaming Bug on the new MBP with Retina Display?

    Hi,
today i got my new MacBook Pro with Retina Display. I am using Monsters Clarity HD Model One as speakers for my computer and have the new Bluetooth-Module called "Streamcast". This Module is APT-X and AAC compatible and has a really great quality. Normally...
But with the new MBP i can only stream the Audio via SBT (AD2P) what is a much worse quality. On my old MacBook Pro 13" AAC and APT-X was working very well.
Is that already a known issue? What can i do in this case?
    Thanks a lot,
    Rene

so return it for another one if its within the 14 day return policy.  If not, bring it in for repair.

  • Is the fact that the new MBP with Retina display, has choppy scrolling in safari, a reason not to buy it? Can it be fixed through software?

I am debating buying a new MBP with Retina or a Macbook Air. I am looking for more info on wat people have been saying about lag in safari. Thanks!

Hey fredryan..did you end up getting the rMBP?  I too am a little concerned about the screen performance while I wait for mine to ship.  If you have gotten yours do you mind commenting on how Mountain Lion affected it?  Is the lag still a big issue?  Thanks!

  • New (Oct. 2013) retina MBP. Can I boot to Mountain Lion on external drive?

    Hi there,
I edit in my office with a Mac Pro (2010) desktop, but occasionally I have to edit out of office.  My trusty old 2008 MacBook Pro just died, so I've ordered a new retina MBP.  It will come loaded with Mavericks.  The problem is that my editing software (Avid Media Composer) is always an OS release or two behind, and Media Composer doesn't run properly (yet) with Mavericks.
So... here's my question.  I've got a 250Gb SSD that I can put in an external enclosure.  I could install Mountain Lion on this SSD, and then install Avid.
Then, on those occasions when I need to edit out of office with my new retina MBP, I would boot up to this drive.
Does this sound good?  Will the new retina MBP work run on Mountain Lion?
    Thanks for any advice,
    Malcolm

You might be able to depending on the exact version of Mt Lion you have on that external. The newest iMacs originally got shipped with a special version of Mt Lion 10.8.4 (right not even the newest release of Mt Lion) that included the proper driver package for the new hardware. If you had a copy of that your new 2013 MBP might boot from it. But since you have a copy from a 2010 model I doubt it would. The only way to tell is TRY IT. No harm will come to your new MBP if it doesn't.

  • FaceTime problems on 3 brand new MBP 13 Retina, Apple has given in

    Hi All,
After recieving 3 brand new machines (MBP13 Retina) in Dec 2013 and Jan 2014, Apple does not believe they can deliver a proper working brand new machine. They also won't look into the problem and hope i can accept this faulty machine.
Is that what Apple is turned into? A company that doesn't believe they can fix their own machines? Or do they not care anymore about their customers and their product?
The person I'm facetiming with cannot hear me when we talk at the same time. My (3 brand new, but all 3 faulty) machines will mute me, so the other party cannot hear me. It is back to the walky talky ages again, 'over'.
Since I'm a great believer of Apple, I cannot believe they won't fix this problem and just keep on selling and delivering brand new MBP 13 Retina machines that don't work.
Does nobody at the Apple company care anymore, is there no company pride?

after a week of working on this problem the last straw was spending  3 hours being helped with this problem by 1mb.com after which time they asked me either to take out a years  support at £129 or pay for help from a better qualified technician! As I only received my IPad last week I am going to send it back tomorrow. why doesn't Apple respond when it is obvious from all the discussions that there is a problem? Considering the price of the iPad I feel thoroughly disillusioned and cheated as well as frustrated by spending so many hours to no avail. this was not the only problem I've encountered but it is the one I've wasted most time trying to resolve./

  • MBP 15" Retina MagSafe 2 Power Adapter is extremely hot while charging?  Help

MBP 15" Retina MagSafe 2 Power Adapter is extremely hot while charging?  Help

Both the system and the charger are still under warranty. If you feel you have a defective part you should take both into apple to be checked out and replaced if found defective.
I also sugest you buy the applecare extended warranty before your standard one year warranty expires, you can only buy it during the original one year warranty. Once that has expired you can no longer buy it.
To fix any mac computer once out of warranty is expensive and even more so for the retina models.
