New 15in Macbook Pro Slow

I got my 1st Mac, a MBP 15in, a few days ago and a couple of times per day the MBP slows to a crawl. I see the beachball spinning for a couple of minutes and it is unresponsive. Restarting fixes the performance issue. I don't see anything obvious in the activity monitor but then again I am new to Macs so I could be missing something. Apps installed are LibreOffice, Aperture, Chrome and VLC.
Is this likely a memory issue? The folks at the Apple store said 4GB was more than enough.
Thanks in advance.

  • Can't get new 15in Macbook Pro to work.

So I just bought my first Macbook Pro, halfway through the startup process it froze so I decided to reboot it. When I started it back up it stayed on a white screen and it had the "no" symbol, then switched to a symbol of a folder with a question mark.
I asked a friend of mine who owns a Mac and he said it was probably because Snow Leopard was not yet installed into the computer. So I inserted the startup DVD for Snow Leopard and the computer booted into the Mac OS X Installer and let me get to the point where it asks you to select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X.
The only problem is that it's telling me that it can't start up from my Hard Drive.
School starts for me in a few days and I really need to figure out how to get my Macbook up and running. Please help.

    Hi Daniel,
Sounds like your friend may be right and there may be no OS for the system to boot from. I take it you bought this used?
If the installer won't install Snow Leopard to your hard drive there are only two reasons I can think of. Either the drive simply is not formatted correctly, which is easy to fix, or the drive broken. The former being more likely.
Can you launch Disk Utility from the installation menu? When you boot into the installer, you should see a menu bar across the top of the screen, one of the options being 'Utilities'. From there, launch 'Disk Utility'. Once in Disk Utility select your drive from the left hand side and then select 'Partition' from the right hand side. Format the drive with 1 partition and format as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". After thats done, quit Disk Utility and continue through with installed. If the drive is working properly, it should now allow you to install Snow Leopard to it.
If you did buy it used, there is a possibility that the previous owner wiped the drive before selling and didn't format it correctly.
    Hope that helps

  • New retina macbook pro 13" slow animations

I am experiencing slow animations on my new retina macbook pro 13" (I have the middle 2,4 Ghz base model). This happens throughout the whole system, especially noticeable is the animation on the login screen and the laggyness when scrolling list views from inside your dock (for example scrolling your downloads or documents in "list view" mode inside the dock). But it also happens when scrolling in finder or with some window animations.
The solution that solves this problem is plugging in my external monitor which doesn't have retina resolution. Now everything is really smooth again like it should be.
I also checked a friends macbook pro (he's having exactly the same but with the more powerfull i7 processor) and it turned out he is not having those issues.
What I tried so far is resetting the NVRAM and a full new installation but neither did solve anything. I am not using any third party software which could cause this, it's also happening on a bare minimum system.

I have met the same problem too!
Mine is also the new macbook pro Haswell.
I have been using my macbook for 2 days.
And I have encountered sudden freeze for 4 times!
The keyboard and the trackpad are unresponsive.
But actually the system is working and the apps are working.
And the power button can actually work.
So every time I met this problem,I long press the power button and make it restart.
    And then everything is okay.
Somtimes ,if you wait for 10~15 min, the keyboard and the trackpad will start working again.
When the second time I met this problem, I decided to go to the apple store for help.
But after several mins, it works again.
It is very annoying that the system suddenly freeze when you are busy working on the documents.
And it causes damage that you force to shut down the macbook.
I think it is a software problem?
Hope Apple can release some updates to solve this problem soon!

  • Mid 2010 macbook pro slow to sleep. No print queu issues.

Hey everyone! My Mid 2010 macbook pro slow is slow to go to sleep. I have read several community forums and I've checked for old print jobs (which seems to be a common issue) and have found none. I've also reset all printers and jobs.  Anyways, it takes 35 to 60 seconds to go sleep (until fan/harddrive turns off/I see blinking white light).  This slow sleep occurs even with a complete fresh install of Mavericks, and even after installing a new SSD. I am honestly at a loss.
I did the "pmset -g log" command and I have found two reoccurring things that I think might be the reason (though I don't really understand it fully). I commonly see "TimedOut InternalPreventSleep "com.apple.powermanagement.darkwakelinger" 00:00:15" commonly and "PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "Address Book Source Sync" 00:00:30".  I have bolded both of these below:

  • The new 13" MacBook Pro - i5 or i7?

Regarding the new 13" MacBook Pro, how much of a speed difference will there be between the i5 and the i7 versions? Is it worth the $300? My G4 Powerbook is going to be retired shortly and the new 13" are here just in time.

The biggest difference in benchmarking and day to day performance between the i5 and i7 MBP 13" isn't so much the processor as it is about hard drive performance. I owned the i7 version for a while, but returned it as I couldn't justify the high price in a machine that was just suplimenting some light duties away from my high end iMac. In picking up the i5 version, it was OK for speed, but really slowed down over the month I've been using it. I traced this back to the poorly performing Seagate 320 GB 5200 rpm drive. Now that I've upgraded that to a Hitachi 500 GB 7200, my boot time is 26 seconds -- identical to the i7 version. My 64 bit Geekbench testing has jumped from 5800 to 6450 -- a huge increase. And take note that the i7 version, with it's faster HD, clocks in around 6900 in geekbench.
I picked the i5 MBP 13" up at MicroCenter in the states for just over a grand, and the hard drive replacment was around 60 bucks. I saved roughly 400 and got a machine thats 95% of the i7 version.

  • Extremely high system CPU load on my new 2012 Macbook Pro

I just brought my brand new 2012 Macbook Pro (non-retina) home from the store and noticed that it was running INCREDIBLY slow. I opened up the activity monitor and found that the system's CPU load is consistently around 70%-90%. I haven't installed any software outside of google chrome, although the issue was happening even before I installed google chrome.
Here are screenshots of my macbook's specs
Here's a screenshot of the processes sorted by %CPU
Here's a screenshot of the processes sorted by CPU Time
Any idea what would cause such a high system CPU load? Again I haven't installed any software outside of google chrome, and I don't have anything hooked up to my Macbook. This issue happens when my Macbook is both plugged and unplugged and I haven't noticed any overheating or extensive fan use.

    harkiamsuperman,
your first image shows Chrome using over half of the CPU time. Note that Chrome on Mavericks is more CPU-intensive than other browsers, since Google does not provide a 64-bit version of the app for OS X.
Since you’ve just brought your MacBook Pro home, perhaps Spotlight is doing its initial indexing of your internal disk; that could be one possible explanation. If that is the cause, then your CPU usage should settle down after it finishes.
If you’d like to try something simple and immediate, you could reset your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if that makes a difference.

  • How do I perform a "Suite Product Activation" so that Acrobat will start working on my new Retina MacBook Pro?

How do I perform a "Suite Product Activation" so that Acrobat will start working on my new Retina MacBook Pro?
Like others, I have recently upgraded my MacBook Pro to the next generation and migrated all my information from old to new. Everything works seamlessly EXCEPT Acrobat. Photoshop, Indesign, Bridge and Lightroom all seem functional. Acrobat hangs with an error message "Suite Product Activation Needed. Acrobat was installed as part of a suite. To enable Acrobat, please start another element of the suite (such as Photoshop)." Needless to say, starting another element of the suite has NO impact on Acrobat.
This has to be a common problem. Now that Apple has made it really easy to migrate information from old to new machines, it has to come up all the time. What surprises me greatly is that I can't find any coherent answer in these forums.
So how do I get Acrobat running again?

    Hi Anubha,
I do not understand what you said below.
I am running Adobe Acrobat Pro Version 9.5.5. I do not remember whether it came with Photoshop or InDesign.
When I open Photoshop, it opens without my having to follow any instructions to activate the software. As a matter of fact, I cannot find my Photoshop serial number anywhere in the Photoshop program itself. I do know it from my profile at Adobe.com. Are you suggesting I deactivate Photoshop on the new computer and then reactivate it using my serial number? Will it reactivate?
    When you say
"/Library/Application Support/Adobe" at the root level of the startup disk (not the Library folder inside a user's Home folder)
what do you mean? I do not have a startup disk. I have the original installation disk but that version of Photoshop has been updated a few times.
After staring at your instructions for a while, I realized that you might be talking about the Library/Application Support folders resident on my Macintosh HD, although why you called it a startup disk is unclear to me. IAC, I went into those folders and duly moved the three folders into a new folder I called “Acrob1” and restarted Adobe Acrobat 9 and got the following error message: “AMT Subsystem Failure  The licensing subsystem has failed catastrophically. You must reinstall of call customer support.” with a small (6).
By undoing my actions I am back to the staus quo ante.
    Now what?
    Regards, Robert

  • Windows 7 install and/or environment freezing on new 13" MacBook Pro

Hello! Long post, trying to give as much detail as I can... thank you in advance for your help on this!!
I think I posted in the incorrect forum earlier -- reposting here where it's more relevant.
I have a frustrating issue I've been battling all weekend. I can't seem to figure it out.
I'm trying to set up dual boot (Boot Camp) on my new 13" MacBook Pro, installing Windows 7. I've tried x64 (preferable) and x86. This is the mid-April 2010 13" MacBook Pro. C2D 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 250GB HD, nVidia 320M.
The problem I'm having is the machine is hard-locking. Sometimes it locks up during install (the 2nd phase, after it restarts and is "Completing Installation" (this step: http://spsexton.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/install-13.jpg). This makes me have to restart the installation completely, which is frustrating. Sometimes it locks up at the login screen. Sometimes it locks up once I'm logged in to Windows.
I have noticed that if the installation completes and I can get to the desktop, I can generally use it OK until I install the Boot Camp Drivers (3.1, from the 10.6.3 install DVD). I had a hunch and had also read that it may have to do with the nVidia drivers it installs, so I have tried uninstalling those prior to restart. It locks up anyway at restart (during login). Note that this generally is the case -- sometimes it locks up before I even get to the Boot Camp Drivers step. I sometimes can then get in to Safe Mode without it locking (sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't), and I think I had some repeated errors in the Event Viewer that appeared erroneous (certainly not errors that should cause a hard lock) -- I can post these if needed when I get home from work this evening.
I was having consistent lockups during installation (at the "Completing Installation" step I mentioned above) when I'd let the Boot Camp Assistant set up the partition for me. I thought BCA might be doing something funny, so I set up the partition myself using Disk Utility then installed, and the install went in OK, however I still had it lock up after installing the Boot Camp Drivers.
Here's the steps I've been following:
    1. Partition drive, either using Boot Camp Assistant or Disk Utility. Format to FAT if using Disk Utility.
    2. Boot into Windows installer
    3. Format drive to NTFS in installer
    4. Install
    5. Reboot
    6. Complete install (often locks here as mentioned above)
    7. If install completes, boot in to Windows
    8. Change some system settings -- temp folders, workgroup name, pagefile size, turn off UAC
    9. Reboot
    10. Install Boot Camp Drivers from DVD (sometimes locks before I get here)
    11. (have tried sometimes) Uninstall nVidia drivers installed by Boot Camp
    12. Reboot
    13. Consistent locks
    14. Start over, both trying a new Partition creation (delete old, expand Mac partition, recreate new partition via BCA or DU), or using existing partition
    Some other details:
    1. This environment seems to work fine via Parallels. I only appear to have locking issues if I try to boot natively.
    2. The Boot Camp Drivers installs a bunch of driver crud for devices the machine does not have. Could this be causing an issue? Drivers that Windows is attempting to load and failing, thus causing issues?
    3. I'm mainly trying to install x64 due to the 4GB of RAM -- could this be an issue with the Boot Camp Drivers and Windows x64?
    4. I don't think this is a motherboard issue as the machine is completely stable otherwise -- I'd think that if it was a hardware failure, especially with the motherboard, I'd see other issues elsewhere..
Any ideas??? I'm pulling my hair out on this one. The machine is brand new (just got it Tuesday last week, just started using it this last weekend). My last MacBook Pro (previous model 13" MBP) took Windows 7 without a single hitch and ran smooth as butter.
    Help?

i just got some solution for this... dunno whether it will work for u all... anyone who got the same problem... try to press power button right on welcome screen after u type ur username and password.... or if u didnt put a password, u can press the power button right on the welcome screen... and then it will automatically to the lock state... and then u login again... the windows will appear... i work it on windows 7 64 bit... if u can login for that 1st time, for next time, u dont need to press the power button anymore... for me it works... XD
    cheers...
gud luck for u all... =)

I got a new laptop (Macbook Pro) and my IPhone is synced with my previous laptop (which I no longer have). I've recorded dozens of very long (un-emailable) Voice Memos over the last few weeks and need to get them from my IPhone onto my new laptop.
    How do I do this?
(when I click on the Sync option I get the warning: "Are you sure you want to sync music? All existing songs and playlists on the iPhone will be replaced with songs and playlists from your iTunes library." I fear that if I click this I will lose all of my important Voice Memos as well)

Just to add to what ChrisJ4203 said.  You can sync them to your new computer using iTunes by selecting to Include Voice Memos on the Music tab of your iTunes sync settings and syncing.  However, you still need to re-establish syncing with the new computer without iTunes erasing all the iTunes media from your phone (as the warning mentioned).
If you copy your entire iTunes folder (not just your music) from your old computer to your new one, along with other non-iTunes media you may be syncing with iTunes (such as contacts, calendars and any photos synced to your phone from your old computer) by using migration assistant of following one of these methods: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527, then when you sync again with your new computer it will recognize your phone and sync as it did before.  You will still have to authorize the new computer for any Apple IDs used to purchase from the iTunes and App stores (in iTunes>Store>Authorize this computer).
After that you can sync your voice memos to your computer as mentioned earlier.
If you want to archive your voice memos before you do anything with iTunes, you can use a 3rd party program such as PhoneView or Touch Copy.

I have a new apple MacBook Pro. All my music is on my old computer and my i-pad. What is the easiest way to transfer my music onto my new
    computer?

    apps
If you have an iPod touch or iPhone with iOS 4 or later software, or an iPad, you can use iTunes to transfer files between your computer and an app on your device that supports file sharing.
You might want to do this if, for example, you want to save files you create on your device to your computer, or take files with you so you can use them when you’re away from your computer.
You don’t need to sync your device to transfer files, but your device needs to be connected to your computer.
For information about supported apps, see the documentation for your apps.

Connect your iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad to your computer.
In iTunes, select your device (below Devices), and click the Apps button.
Below File Sharing, from the list on the left, select the app on your device that you want to transfer a file from.
From the list on the right, select the file you want to transfer, and click “Save to.”
In the window that appears, select the destination where you want to save the file, and click Choose.
The file is saved to the selected destination on your computer.

If you have audio or video files on your computer, you can import them into iTunes so that they appear in your iTunes library.

Here are ways to add items from your computer to your iTunes library:
Drag a file or folder from the Finder to the iTunes window.
If you add a folder, all the files it contains are added to your library.
In iTunes, choose File > “Add to Library,” locate a file or folder, and then click Choose.
By default, iTunes places a copy of each audio file in the iTunes folder (Home/Music); the original file remains in the current location. For information about adding an alias to the file (instead of creating a copy), see Add items to your library without copying them to your iTunes folder.

  • I have a new l7 macbook pro running snow leopard.  When I try to boot into windows7 32bit, I get either a blue, black, or flickering screen.  Then I have to physically shut down and try again.  At that point it will load correctly.  Any help?

I have a new l7 Macbook Pro running snow leopard.  When I tried to to install windows 7 32 bit on bootcamp, I kept getting a flicking black and blue screen when it tried to install. (Tried several times).  I finally downloaded the bootcamp windows support to a flash.  I inserted that and finally got it installed.  Now when I try to boot into windows I get either a solid black (sometimes blue) or flickering screen and windows will not start up.  If I then physically shut down the mac and restart, it will finally boot into windows where it tells me that windows was shut down unexpectently and once I click start windows normally, it will boot up.  That will generally let me boot into windows for the remaining of the day.  The next day, the same thing happens again.  I have tried reinstalling several times, and the same thing keeps happening.  It is not my windows disk because it installs flawlessly on the mid 2008 macbook pro.  Anyone know how to fix this?

I own HDM 2011. But they have products that aren't listed or hard to find too.
