New 1TB Hard drive

Hi,
I bought a new 1 TB hard drive for my Macbook Pro 13", before that Lion was installed on my Macbook Pro and on the new hard drive is of course no system. When I put in the Snow Leopard DVD and select reset from Time Machine, and select the latest backup where Lion is installed, will Lion and all my data beo on my new Hard drive? Thanks in advance.

PS: I already tried to clone my hard drive with the hard drive program on my new hard drive. When I booted the first time everything worked fine. Then when I turned it off and on again there was a folder with a question mark instead of the apple on the boot screen and another time there was a forbidden sign.

Is your 1tb drive an external drive or a replacement for your internal HD?
Time Machine will not install Lion on your new HD.
You will have to upgrade Snow Leopard to Lion yourself and then, use Time Machine to restore your Settings, Applications and Data.

PSA, New 1TB Hard Drive shows as 7.3TB, won't install OS 10.4

I had this problem so I am putting this here to help anyone that may run across it.
The HD in my Late 2006 17" iMac died and I needed to replace it, the machine is dedicated to 10.4 for old software I need to use. The original HD was 320GB. I called up my online supplier and asked for a 320GB and, though I am sure they were looking out for my best interests, they convinced me to get a 1TB HD, actually cheaper and larger.
I put it into my iMac and when I put in the install discs the volume did not show to do the install. I went to disc utility and the HD was there but listed as a 7.3TB drive. I called my supplier, they took a new 1TB, formatted it and sent it to me. I installed that and had the same problem. So I turned to the last resort and Goggled "17" iMac hard drive install 7.3TB" and got plenty of hits about people having the same problem.
One of the hits was to a thread on this forum by BDAqua, he explains it well.
So the solution for me was to get a smaller HD as I originally requested. It seems all 1TB and larger drives use the 4096 byte/sector Advanced Format technology however Western Drive 3.5" drives 500GB and lower are the older 512 byte technology.
Of course this only applies if you want to run 10.4. If you are going to 10.5 it should be a moot point.

are the install disks that come with the computer limited to that specific computer? We have 2 powerbook G4s (a 15 and a 17 inch) The 15inch is giving me the trouble. It's possible that I grabbed the install disk for the 17inch.
Never used the disks before. When I insert the disk, reboot and hold the c key, the computer eventually goes to a solid blue screen without anything on it and stops.
As an experiment, I inserted the install disk in the 15, then attached the 15 to the 17 as a target. Teh 15 mounted on the 17 with the install disk mounting. I then drilled down through the install files until I go to the os install package and double clicked. It started to install but after about an hour it ended with an error message.

TVs don't support "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", so you will probably have to use FAT32. To format the external drive, follow the same steps as you did to format it with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but in the erasing screen, select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as "Format". Note that FAT32 isn't compatible with files bigger than 4 GB. Also, you may have to format the external drive in a PC

Mb881 how big of a hard drive will work? Will a 1tb hard drive work?

Hi, letmeno. If your 667MHz Powerbook has a DVI video-out port, it will format a nominal 160GB drive to its actual capacity (about 149GB) and use it happily, without any other limitations.
If you have the 667MHz model with a VGA video-out port, only 127-128GB of a 160GB drive can be recognized in it, and the last 20GB of the drive's actual capacity will be unavailable. Partitioning the drive has no effect on this hardware limitation.
A 120GB drive (the next size down) has a formatted capacity in any machine of about 111GB, so a 160GB drive actually provides a significant increase even in a Powerbook that can't use the whole drive. If you have the VGA model, and the difference between 111GB and 128GB is worth the difference in price between a 120 and a 160GB drive to you, go ahead and install a 160. Otherwise, even a 120 would certainly be a huge improvement over a 30.
If you do buy a 160, any later Powerbook or other recent Mac model will be able to reformat it to its full capacity. Whenever you move on to a newer Mac, you can just mount the 160 in an external enclosure for continued use, put the 30 back into the Tibook, and sell it or give it away.

Losing the will - Bay 2 1TB Hard Drive can't install Vista AT ALL!

I have a new Mac Pro and installed a Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB hard drive in bay 2, solely for a Vista install (for editing AVCHD in Sony Vegas) but I cannot under any circumstances, install Vista on any partition, be it the full, halved, any combination at all - you name it, I can't install.
I get as far as the partition screen in Vista and his is where things slip up - I have had the Boot Camp partition (only on a split, never on the single partition) and it just will not let me install. Not under any circumstance.
This is appalling, I have been onto Apple who have escelated it to one of their engineers, he did not have a clue. Way to go.
So, I was wondering if anybody had any ideas or has experienced this?
BTW, I have not tried to install to the OS hard drive yet - don't really want to mess with it.

There are a number of things you can do, but in every case, you have to delete any FAT partition, create NTFS before you can install. In some cases, a restart from Vista DVD is required before it proceeds.
In one instance, I had to remove the OS X drive, but that may be why some jump to wrong conclusion about drive bays making a difference - they don't.
You got it installed so you must have been at least somewhat successful.
I use Disk Utility to create and format the drive 99% of the time. If you are going to dedicate a drive to Vista, even multiple FAT/NTFS partitions, I would set the partition table (Partition: Options.... in Disk Utility) to Master Boot Record rather than GUID.
Let Windows do all the updates through multiple reboots before you insert the Leopard DVD to add Apple setup.exe services often called "BootCamp drivers."
BootCamp Assistant is unnecessary and I don't think well designed even yet for use on Mac Pro UNLESS you need to install Windows on the same drive as OS X, such as you find on iMac/MacBook series.
Vista DVDs are now available with SP1 already, which is what I would buy today if I was buying Vista.
say "had" because a couple of days down the line when I tried to boot into Vista, I was met with a black screen and flashing cursor.

New Computer and New External Hard Drive - why do folders and photos not show up?

I replaced my desktop with a new laptop and external hard drive. I transferred photos from the desktop to the external hard drive. Lightroom 2 only shows the mapped hard drive, but does not show any folders or photos. Can Lightroom be set up to house all the photos on an external hard drive rather than using space on the internal laptop hard drive? Do the photos and folders need to be imported again into LR2? The photos are available for viewing when you search folders, but they open up in Photoshop not LR2.
What should I do to configure imports to be housed on the external hard drive? Is this wise? I will not be able to hold all the photos on the laptop internal hard drive. Photos used to be JPEG and DNG from D700. I am starting to see NEF. Does this replace DNG? Besides RAW I also need to have JPEG for other family members to access photos on other computers connected to the network. I am watching a tutorial DVD and slowly picking up how this all works. Let me know if I am not using the correct terms.

Lot's of questions here. I'll do a few.
Yes Lightroom can work with images on external drives. As many drives as you want.
I assume from what you said in your original post that you have had lightroom installed on the old desktop and now wish to transfer your catalogue and all files to the external drive and work from that.
So what you would do would be to transfer the entire contents of the lightroom folder on your old computer, except for any images, to the same location on your new laptop. This would include the catalogue files and any folders containing previews. Then you would copy all your image files to the new external hard drive. When you open lightroom you can then select the catalogue you copied from the old computer and open it. In the the folder pane in the library module you can then right click on one of the folders and select "locate missing files". Then you just need to point light room to the new location of your images. You may or may not need to regenerate all your previews.
I store all my images on external hard drives and I even run the catalogue and previews from the same external drives. I have backups of all my images of course. I have light room make backups of the catalogue to the C drive on my laptop so that the original and the backup are stored in different locations.
NEF is the proprietary file system for raw images used on Nikon cameras. DNG is a universal raw file format developed by Adobe. You can convert your files from NEF to DNG on import, but as Lightroom can read both types of files it is not necessary. At this point in time if you are using lightroom you should get similar results from either type of file.
To store imports on the new external drive you can you tell light room to copy the files to the new drive or you can manually copy the files to the new location and have light room import From the current location.

I say 'sort of' because I used Carbon Copy Cloner to do a block-level transfer. I just didn't want to get hung up with a Finder copy.
Give CCC a try - you have to enable the block copy in Preferences before using this method, but I was quite happy with it. I used it to move over 1TB of TM backups from a FireWire 800 drive to a 2TB Thunderbolt drive. 5 seconds short of taking 5 hours.
It should work well for you.

I just bought a new internal hard drive, but it seems subtley too slow!,
On a Logic 8 song i'm working on the tracks timing seems slightly off, it's kind of driving me crazy because at times it is subtle, and other times obvious.
and 2 other things, one is an iTunes playback stalled twice, and that's never happened before,
also, when working on a Word doc, the screen was not re-drawing properly. i had to repeatedly reisze the doc window to get it re-draw itself. this has never happened before either.
is there a way to test this new hard drive?,

There are though all the ones I've used, TechTool Pro, Disk Utility, Intech Speedtools, none were 'perfect' or as good as the vendor's own utility which runs on Windows.
But you might do something for us - include the drive make/model version, and, do a look up with Google and see if you get any helpful hits.
How you have your system setup, number of drives and organization of files, can also have an impact.
Off hand, WD Caviar 640GB is cheap and fast, or there are some 1TB drives that look good, too.
Drives do break in over a period of days or first week, and it can help to break in and torture, zero the entire drive, run media scan, use a benchmark utility to graph I/O over the full drive.
Check out Barefeats, they do a bit of drive testing benchnmarks and see what they use and results. Or Tom's Hardware.

I have moved all my songs onto a new external hard drive but it has wiped my iPod clean. Although when I connect my iPod it's starts teh process of sync'ing - so many songs in I get a pop up advising the siong could not be read or written to?

Did you go into iTunes to change the location of your media files? if not you will need to go into iTunes and click on preference and select the advance tab then click the iTunes Media folder location. Select the location of your on external hard drive.

This is a tricky one.
Open up Time Machine and go back to a date using the timeline on the right side of the window when you know the drive was working and was backing up as part of Time Machine backups.
Click on the name of your Mac under the Devices heading on the left side of the window in Time Machine, and if things are working correctly you will see Macintosh HD (or whatever you have named it) and the name of the external hard drive that was backing up in the past.
Right-Click on the name of the external hard drive and then click on "Restore (name of drive) to....." You may be asked for your adminstrator password at this point.
It might be easier to restore the drive contents to your desktop if you have room on your Mac, and then copy things over to the new external drive where you want to store the Aperture and iMovie Libraries.
Once the libraries have been moved over the new external hard drive, you will likely need to "point" Aperture and iMovie to the location of the libraries on the new external hard drive.

It depends upon exactly what you want to do with your Mac. My old Late 2007 17" MacBook Pro only has 4GB RAM and it works fine. It is a little slow if I am doing anything involving heavy computing (rendering video, compiling programs, etc.) but it works just fine. In most cases, the increased RAM will help performance, but the cost can be fairly high with an older machine like you have.

I want to upgrade my hard drive disk (macbook pro 13 inch mid 2009) from 160 GB to possibly a 1TB. If I bought a 1TB hard drive disk would it work in my computer and would apple install it for me? If not is there anywhere in manhattan thats an afiliate of apple that would do it? I checked out Ifixit.com and was looking at how to do it on my own but honestly I'd probably screw it up. Any help would be much appreciated.

they would not install a hard drive you purchased somewhere else, however I'm sure a computer repair shop in manhattan that would be willing to. you can use 2-3 or 4TB drives, in each drive bay. The 4TB drives are slightly taller and need to check that it aligns properly going in. So it is just physical. most users have already upgraded to 1 and 2TB, and even 3TB for TimeMachine.
While upgrading, buy a 120-250GB SSD for your system. Your Mac will run better than ever.

When I bought the new (used) iMac, I also bought an external hard drive for backups. It worked fine, but my husband stole it.
Then I bought a new external hard drive (Seagate) and it worked fine for three weeks, then died.
So I just got a new external hard drive, which was put together from an internal hard drive and a hard drive enclosure.
Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up. Instead, it took 30 minutes. That can't be right. I want to start over and do a full backup to make sure everything gets onto my new external hard drive, but I can't figure out how to do that. Please help.

I move all photos to a new external hard drive. Now all folders have a question mark in them. How do I find ALL PHOTOS at one time instead of having to find each picture. I have about 30,000 photos. Using Mac. LR5
