New 2.4Ghz odd electrical buzzing & no vol up sound

Hey guys. I just picked up the brand new base model MacBook Pro today (2.4GHz). I've noticed a few things already...
When I scroll up and down on webpages (either in Safari or Firefox) I get a electrical buzzing sound that comes from the middle back (below the keyboard). I get this same sound, only louder, when I use the iTunes visualizer. I also have notices the sound a bit when launching an app (but they launch so quick I hardly notice it) and when i move the cursor back and forth in the dock.
Any idea what this may be?
Also, When I turn the volume up and down it doesn't make the neat volume "plop plop PLOP" sound that Macs usually make. What could this be about?
Thanks everyone!

While I am not sure this is the same buzzing you are talking about, I am also having buzzing issue right out of the gate with my new 2.5Ghz MBP. It is on the right side and is a constant low pitched buzzing that sounds either like a fan or hard drive. The best analogy to a sound would have to be the noise a loose wire, on a home audio system for example, sounds when not properly connected. This noise is pretty annoying in a quite environment and not something I could say sounds appropriate. I have never heard such a consistent noise in the in the nine years I have been using apple notebooks.
I called apple care today and they said it is increased fan speed due to the smaller chips and higher processor speed, which is total bs considering I just had a 2.4Ghz MBP. I am slightly irked by the fact that customer support would come up with pretty pathetic explanation such as that and obviously bothered by this noise even more.

  • Electrical buzzing through body of new macbook air

    Hello,
I'm wondering whether anyone else is having this issue with the new air, I have the 13" model, when the power charger is plugged in there is an electrical buzzing through the casing around the mouse pad, not a buzzing sound but rather a vibration, as though it's not quite earthed.
    Any comments or advice appreciated.

"as though it's not quite earthed."
Is it properly earthed? As with every other MacBook product, ever since day one, the power adapter places one-half of the line voltage onto the computer chassis. Although annoying, the current level is very low, well within international safety standards. This can be avoided by using an earthed power adapter plugged into a properly earthed AC outlet.

  • Does your new 27" LED Cinema Display buzz?

Got my 27 inch LED Cinema Display yesterday: very nice monitor.
However, I have noticed a feint buzz/ticking coming from the bottom right of the monitor when the brightness is set high. Just loud enough to be VERY annoying!
Is this a feature of the monitor? Does anyone else's new 27" Display have a buzz?

yes, the reason it sounds like the electromagnetic interference that induces tones in speaker drivers (such as the microwave energy from cell phones) is because it is essentially the same mechanical action... which is a resonation electromagnetic coil (which will produce tones at whatever frequency it is vibrating).
The specific tones that it is producing are dependant on the electrical properties of the circuits attached to the coupled device - but it's probably possible that particular properties could cause the coils to create more than a single tone (just like a speaker)... on mine the tone didn't quite sound singular, but since the amplitude was analogue to the brightness i guessed that this pointed the transformer.
It used to be such a serious problem in inductively coupled conductive devices that it could shake the devices to pieces. These days it's only really an irritation in terms of noise - but it remains necessary to design the structure and housing of these devices to dampen and minimise these vibrations.
In much larger transformers the noise is very noticeable (have a listen the next time you pass an electrical substation).
... i could be wrong but it's a common problem in electronics and i think it's likely.

  • Electrical 'Buzz' from Chassis when Charging

    Hi all,
My new MBP 2.53 has begun to emit an electrical 'buzz' when it is being charged. I've not noticed it before & it only happens when it is on charge. If I remove the magsafe, it stops.
It feels like the chassis of the computer isn't earthed properly & every time I touch the computer and move my fingers, I can feel... I guess static on the metal parts.
Do you think this is the magsafe, or the computer?
Should I take it my MBP back? Will the Apple Store take a look if I didn't purchase from them?

Are you using the grounding cable with the power brick? If not, try that.
I don't think a buzz would be considered normal. If you have access to an Apple Store, by all means make an appointment at the genius bar and have this evaluated. It could be a problem with the Left I/O Board where the power comes in. You should not be feeling anything electrical on the chassis.
You can take it to any Apple Store for evaluation--it doesn't matter where you bought it.
    Good luck!

  • New 2.4GHz MBP in "lid closed mode" wakes up automatically

    Hi,
I got one of the new 2.4Ghz MBPs, had a first gen 2.16Ghz MBP before. I have external mouse, keyboard and display attached and use it with the lid closed. When I sent my older MBP to sleep it would take a few seconds before the display went dark. Then I turned of the power outlet and the MBP kept sleeping.
With the new MBP I have to power off during the time the display is still on or otherwise the MBP will immediately wake up as soon as I turn off power. Then it will take a few seconds for it to "realize" that I did not intend to wake it (i.e. the lid is still closed, no external display, no power supply) and will finally go to sleep.
    2 Questions:
    - Is it bad (for the display or the MBP) to power off at the time the Cinema Display is still active?
    - Can I somehow regain the sleep behaviour of my old MBP?
    Thanks a lot!
    Björn

    Try resetting your SMC.

  • IMac 27" strange electric buzz when it is in stop

I have a problem with my iMac 27", whent it is in stop makes a strange electric buzz.
I have reset NVRAM and SMC but it's still there.
PS sorry for my English, I'm italian

At least get the free diagnostic test which the AS & AASP's offer.  This is the only way you will get confirmation of what exactly is wrong w/your iMac.  You can always come back here to tell us what the problem really is & possibly get some DIY (do it yourself) instructions and/or links.

  • R9 280x Electric buzz

Hello, I have problems with my R9 280x Gaming.
When the graph is set to 1020mhz in any game, you hear an electric buzz in the graph (not the fans).
I've looked and seen that I am not the only person that happens, this has solution? I do not think it's good for the graph.
If with the low to 600Mhz OVERDRIVE does not .. and 800 makes it less than 1020.
    thanks

test the card in another PC, this also can come from board or PSU

  • Electrical buzz AFTER shutdown Mac

    Hi, everyone
I have a really weird and disturbing problem with my 24" aluminium 2008 iMac.
I recently discovered (before updating to SL) that I after shutdown I can hear a faint electrical (kind of high pitched) buzz coming from the back of the iMac, from inside it, basically. More specific, from the left side of slot that handles the ventilation. I suspected that happened because the plug I used was not grounded so I plugged the iMac into a grounded one. Still hearing the same worrying noise. When you're in front of it, you don't hear it at all, you have to have your ear close to the ventilation shaft in the back to actually hear it. The electrical buzz stops (obviously) when the iMac is unplugged and returns the moment it's plugged again. Am I the only one having this problem?
Any suggestions, please? What could it be?
Thanks in advance, I look forward to your feedback.

Interesting. Never heard of that before. The only thing I would do is to repair permissions using Disc Utility/run Techtool and run the AHT (Apple Hardware Test).

  • Feeling Electrical Current... Why do I feel an electrical buzz when I touch someone while my laptop is on my lap.  It is a weird electrical stickiness feeling, when you slide your hand on someone's arm it skips like you were touching rubber. Help!

I get an electrical buzz feeling when I touch someone else or someone else touches me, while my laptop is on my lap.
It is a weird electrical stickiness feeling... when you slide your hand on someone's arm it skips as if you were touching rubber.
    Anyone have any remedies?
My girlfriend won't touch me anymore when I am on my computer and thinks she isn't getting pregnant because I am "frying my boys" with electricity.
I called Apple Tech Support - and because my support expired 20 days ago (even though this problem has been going on for months) they said they wouldn't help me.
They suggested the laptop was never meant for a lap - lol... and I should only use it on a table.
    Help - I'm frying here!

  • Electric buzz coming from MBP 2011 SSD

    hi guys,
I recently bought myself a 15'' MBP with the upgraded 2.3GHz quad core i7 & the solid state drive upgrade.
I've been using it now for 2-3 weeks for music production and have just noticed a faint electric buzzing noise that seems to be constantly going while the computer's running.
I read somewhere that the processors make a slight noise while they're idling - not sure how true this is?
Wondering if this' normal for macbook pros - this machine's so far been very quite save for this electric buzz.
if this isn't normal, should I just take it back to an apple store to get it looked at?
any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Adam.

Hi. The people on this site are users just like you. The best I could tell you to do is take it in to apple service and have it looked at. You could try a pram reset. Command /Option/P/R keys for three chimes at startup. But if it is hardware related you will have to have it looked at.

I recently had a kernel panic in which I think my hard drive only had so much space left after I ran a bunch of drivers I thought I needed. I uninstalled all and moved files. For some odd reason I'm not getting sound of of my hdtv/monitor.HELP? I uninstalled all the drives and apps I download. I moived files either to trash if not needed, and others to other external drives. I went into disk utility and did a repair disk permission and verify disk. Clean out junk files. Now my hdtv/monitor does not give me any sound, nor does my mac mini. Can someone please tell me what to do?

    What drivers?

  • My brand new iPad Air 2 is making a random popping sound.

My brand new iPad Air 2 is making a random popping sound and there are crackling sounds when I have the earphones plugged in and browsing with no music. Guy at Apple store could not replicate it when I walked in. Is this normal?
Should I get it replaced and what are the chances that its going to happen again?

Around here I've seen many posters that have renamed the ipad air 2 the "Ipop". You should read some of the older posts by clicking on View More at the bottom of the page until you come across it or do a search for Ipad air 2 popping noise. Last I saw it was hit or miss.  Good luck.

  • Jump from 2.8 Dual Xeon Mac Pro to new 2.4GHz Macbook Pro with LED Cinema?

So about a month ago I decided to upgrade an older Macbook Pro to my dream computer... I bought the Octo 2.8GHz Xeon Mac Pro, added 1.6TB of drive space, 10GB of RAM, the Nvidia 8800 GT, and a 23" Apple Cinema Display.
I LOVE the machine. That said...
Stopped over at Apple the other day and saw the new Macbook Pro connected to the 24" LED Cinema Display. GORGEOUS. Love it. Long story short, I am considering moving back to the Macbook Pro and new ACD to go with it.
So my question is this : What kind of performance drop am I going to take if I do this? Are people really using these new MBPs as full desktop replacements? Has anyone jumped from Mac Pro to new MBP and been 100% happy?
I have found with my Mac Pro that I am NEVER stressing the machine, ever. No matter what size file I am working with, no matter what game I am playing, the thing is always fast and smooth. But while playing with the MBP (it was 2.4GHz) and new LED ACD at the Apple Store I noticed that things like Photoshop and Illustrator launched every bit as fast as on my Mac Pro - even Aperture was speedy and extremely usable! I think the dock magnification seemed a touch jerky when compared to my Mac Pro - but maybe not... can't find any real stats on it.
I normally work in Aperture and Photoshop/Illustrator, have iTunes running, iCal, Pages and Numbers, Keynote, Mail, and do just a touch of video compression every now and then (format conversion). I realize these tasks don't pose any challenges to the Mac Pro - but what about the newer MBP?
I would be ordering the MBP with 2.4GHz, upgrading the RAM to 4GB, and the HDD to a 320GB 7200RPM Seagate.
My main motivation is to be able to continue to work on the Cinema Display that I have grown to LOVE, while also becoming a bit mobile again! It IS nice to sit on the couch sometimes and web browse. It wouldn't be worth it to me to gain mobility and lose all the power though, so...
How about it? Given what I do, is the 2.4GHz MBP a suitable replacement for the Mac Pro that I have?

Thanks for reading through the small book I wrote there and adding some info to it - greatly appreciated.
I have found on the Mac Pro I am simply astounded by the way games look at 1920x1200 on 'Very High' settings! But... I also have pretty much stopped playing them. Working on the Mac Pro all day, it would be very nice to sit back on the couch if I want to play a game. Granted the PS3 I have just can't compete with the Mac Pro in quality, but it's decent enough for the small bit of games I play and the Blu Ray drive is nice too for movies. So, I'd say I'm ok losing the gaming part of the Mac Pro as the PS3 is sufficient enough and more convenient so I can actually sit back and relax.
I think you're absolutely correct on the rendering. When I work with video, I usually am converting 2-8 minute Quicktime Movies in to Flash Video format using QT Pro. The Mac Pro SCREAMS through this in 1-2 minutes, my older Macbook Pro was about 5-7 mins for the same file.
Looking back, my MBP wasn't as old as I thought (I had an iMac in between there I don't care to remember) : it was a 2.4GHz Penryn with 200GB 5400 HDD, and 2GB RAM with 256MB VRAM. So basically, the new MBP and the "old" MBP I had are very close to each other... biggest differences are the new 1066mhz front side bus and Nvidia GPU - other than that, these are identical machines!
I was never very happy working on the MBP full time - but I now know that was due to the screen size. Working on the Cinema is great and selling my current Mac Pro and Cinema and getting the new MBP and Cinema will allow me to work and be mobile, as well as put $1000 back in my pocket.
Might be nuts, but man I'd love to see some comparisons between the Mac Pro and MBP from Bare Feats or Ars. I'm definitely in the minority here - no one using Quickbooks and Photoshop as much as I do "needs" an octocore Mac Pro. But, I've got one and love it. It seems for what I'm doing the decrease in performance might be negligible, if not undetectable entirely (aside from gaming and enconding).
