New 20.5 iMac Stuck Pixels

On 11/1/09, I purchased a new 20.5 iMac. This is my first Mac and I love the machine. Yesterday, I noticed a red pixel near the center of the screen that is stuck. I'm really bummed out because it really stands out on the screen. Any suggestions?

I say take it back from where you bought it and ask for extange. I don't care if apple accepts a certan amount of dead/suck pixels but for the price we pay for these iMacs, I find any amount of dead/stuck pixels to be unacceptible!

  • New 2.4GHz Imac Dead Pixels

    I know dead pixels are always an issue. I purchased a PSP and went through the dead pixel exchange over 12 times. I was lucky to get an iphone with no dead pixels, but now I decided to get my first mac. Since the new iMAC came out I decided to get one. I was going to get the mac mini, but when I saw the imac and the power you get for the price I was hooked.
    Anyway I believe I have a defective screen and I think it is just going to get worse. At first the screen did not have any dead pixels, but after about 3 hours of use the first day I noticed a subpixel suddenly was now black. It looks like it is the green subpixel since that is the only color it cannot display. So I said to myself okay I can deal with one dead subpixel since it is on the dock and just placed photo booth over it and I couldn't see it and would be happy with it. Ignorance is bliss. But now the second day I was using the imac and then suddenly 4 more black pixels came near the top left area of the imac. So that is 5 dead pixels now it two days.
    Has anybody had good experiences with returning their mac with dead pixels on their screen? I hoping 5 or more dead pixels is enough, but wanted to get a feel from the forums if I will be just wasting my time or if there is good chance they will replace my imac. Of course I am worried once I return it I will be going through this 12 times like I did with the PSP. Any thoughts?

    Okay I guess the last 4 were not dead, but stuck because I was showing my fiance the dead pixels and I showed her the one on the dock, which is still black, and then I showed her the 4 at the top left. So we decided to scroll through the desktop wallpaper (I had the default blue wallpaper on when the dead pixels appeared) and suddenly the 4 at the top left area disappeared once I went back to the default blue wallpaper. Not sure if they are going to show up again, but as of right now they are not there anymore. I hope they are gone for good. Maybe I wil get lucky and eventually the one at the bottom on the dock will light up again. I will keep my fingers crossed. So I guess a suggestion to those who may experience what I just did, try chaning your wallpaper and see if that makes the pixels come back and if that doesn't work then you can try those popular pixel fixers.
    I will update if more dead or stuck pixels appear or the others come back. I am now not sure if my screen is considered defective or just a late bloomer. I don't want to be a complainer I just want higher standards when it comes to QOS.

  • New to mac- imac stuck on create an acct page

    I have purchased a used imac 700mhz with osx10.3 panther.
    it powers on and I am trying to follow the prompts for setup.
    I have filled in my information up to the and including the "create an account" page. at the bottom of this page there are 2 choices go back or continue. only the go back is highlighted and I cannot continue registering even though I have filled in the information required.
    I downloaded the manual on my other system- which I am using now- a PC, hoping to get an answer, but on the first page of the book it says- once you have turned on your mac and set up your acct you are ready to begin or something like that.. well, I cannot finish set up. So, the manual is useless.
    I was wondering if there was a problem with the internet connection. I have dialup. I have the imac connected to the phone cord with a splitter from the jack and a regular phone wire.
    I am hoping someone here can help me finish the process so I can see how this system works. Can I get past this page without setting up on the internet? I was really just trying to check the system.

    I just installed Panther on my iMac G3 and It appears you select the internet connection after entering registration information, so I don't think it would have an effect. Even when you don't enter any info the continue button still appears to be active, It's just when you push it 'do not enter' style icons appear next to fields that need to be entered.
    Something must be wrong :-/, re-install maybe>

  • Stuck pixel on new MBP 13

    I bought the new MBP 13" the day they went on sale (feb 24) and I just noticed a stuck pixel near the bottom of my screen. Does Apple usually cover something like this within the first 30 days?

    Hmm, since you said that, they may be a minimum number of dead pixels acceptable until they will fix it. I believe I read that somewhere before. You won't get charged a restocking fee to return the computer, but you only had 14 days from your purchase date to return it (if you bought it directly from Apple). Looks like your past that date. You may be able to swing something by calling Apple, considering your machine is just 3 week sold.

  • Dead or Stuck pixels on brand new iTouch?

    I just bought my first Apple iPod Touch two days ago and i just now noticed a dead or stuck pixel on my screen. Its right smack dab in the center of the screen and can get pretty annoying when im watching a video or when im looking at photos. In addition to that you could say that im OCDish about my stuff in the way that one dead pixel is going to annoy the crap out of me. I wanted to know if i took the itouch back to the apple store would they give me a new one or fix it for me? This dead pixel is going to kill me. I mean stuck pixel. Im pretty sure its not a scratch cuz when i ran a stuck pixel finding online app the pixel would change colors when on a certain color. Anyways any help would be great thanks anyway.

  • Stuck Pixels on iMac (27-inch, Late 2013)?

    So recently I've been getting these weird groups of what I think are stuck pixels in different spots of my 27" iMac, but I'm not entirely sure. The weird thing is that they are showing up even in screenshots, so maybe it's a graphics issue? I've attached two screenshots illustrating the problem.

  • Just bought new 24 inch iMac, what a monster!

    Just got back from Apple retail store in Brent Cross near London in the UK with my new 24 inch iMac.
    All I can say is BRILLIANT!!. What a stunning machine. I had a 20 inch that I bought just 3 weeks back, but I managed to get rid of it to buy this new one.
    Now that I have it on my desk at home I can really appreciate the extra 4 inches, it seems like a lot more than that.
    As the Apple retail store is a 1-hour drive for me I insisted on taking it out of the box and booting it up in the store to check it out before the drive home. It was just as well that I did as there was a single stuck (black) pixel in bottom right hand corner. This would not bother most people, but I do a lot of Photoshop work and I can only imagine that I would be constantly trying to airbrush a speck out of a picture, only to discover that it was a stuck/dead pixel.
    Anyway, the salesman said no problem and got me another one, which I also checked there and then, second one was perfect.
    Anyone who has a 20 inch, get rid of it and buy a 24 inch straight away. They are just awesome.
    Even the staff at the Apple retail store were standing around me in absolute awe as I was checking mine out and filling in my personal details, as they did not have a demo unit on display at this time.
    Other people were standing around too, a little crowd gathered; I felt like an Apple God for a moment there
    The edges are not dark like somebody else mentioned, mine is nice and bright edge-to-edge. In fact is is brighter than my old (3 week old) iMac 20 inch as I have to reduce the brightness on this new 24 inch monster a little bit more to get a nice brightness that I'm used too.
    I put in an extra 2 Gig of ram (2 x 1 GB sticks from my old 3-week old iMac 20 inch model), but bought the standard 24 inch model with standard graphics card. Didn't see the point in better graphics card as I don't do gaming, just inDesign and Photoshop on this machine.
    This screen is also 1920x1200 so it is TRUE HD for playback of future 1920x1080i or 1920x1080p Bluray or HD DVDs, nice. If you think about it, if you popped to a local store and bought a HD-Ready TV with this resolution it would cost you a lot more than the price of the 24 inch iMac so it's like getting a HD TV with a computer thrown in for free, only cheaper
    Had it turned on now for about 3 hours and have been spinning the hard drive a lot as I transfer a lot of old files from external Firewire HD and it is warm near the vents on back/top, nothing excessive though.
    The fan is ever so slightly louder than old 20 inch, but again, negligible.
    Well I'm off to play some more and test some DVDs etc.
    In the meantime they are fantastic machines and I highly recommend them to everyone.
    Buy one today, I don't care how, just get one!!!

    Hey guys, didn't mean to scare anyone with that dead-pixel thing. I've had about 7 Macs over the past 5 years (since moving over from the muddy waters of Windows) and I've NEVER had a single problem. To be honest I was amazed the first 24 inch iMac I pulled out of the box actually had a stuck pixel and so were the staff. One of them tried to 'massage' it away, to no avail. It was hardly noticeable; I'm just a fussy git.
    I doubt any of you guys will take delivery of one with a dead/stuck pixel, this is very rare as Apple only use grade-A LCD panels that have a high quality-control-production-line.
    Anyway, howwow, you really must get a 24 inch; here's why.
    I had 20 inch and spend a lot of time laying out an A4 magazine in Adobe InDesign. I thought my 20 inch Intel Imac was great until I got the 24. Now I can have a full two-page spread across the screen zoomed in 25% bigger than actual size and still have room for my pallets down the left and right hand side. With my old 20 inch iMac I had to collapse or hide certain pallets away or they were over the top of my page on the top/right hand side, which was a pain.
    Another advantage of 24 over 20 is that it is much easier copying files from external to internal hard drives and vice-versa, especially when in Column view as you can have 5 columns on each window; plenty. On my 20 inch I could not get anywhere near this and had to move windows around the desktop to get them into the best space; not anymore.
    Two of my friends came (almost literally) to see me last night and when they stepped into my study room and clocked the massive 24 inch iMac they both almost creamed their jeans right then and there. They were speechless; they are both windows PC users, or should I say were. The 24 inches was more than enough to convince them; well, they were both ladies They are heading for Apple retail store as I type this to buy one each. Now we all know how bloody hard it is trying to convert Windows users to Mac, the 24 inch iMac has no problem doing that.
    I had a large high-def Quicktime movie playing, 6 smaller Quicktime movies playing, a DVD playing with Photobooth open and a bunch of other things, when I hit the exposé button to reveal them all at once it is just amazing on this large screen.
    I've also noticed that running Adobe Photoshop and InDesign on this latest 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Due with 2 GB of RAM is a lot faster than my older (3 week old) iMac 20 inch Intel Core Due machine, that extra '2' really pushes Rosetta programmes along the rails a lot faster; it's sort of turbo charged now. This is great for me as I view InDesign stuff in OverView mode (higher res, but slower).
    This new machine takes just 31 seconds to boot from a cold start by pressing the power button on the back. Fast or what. Ever watch a Windows user switch on their machine and go have a cuppa coffee whilst they wait
    The graphics (and I only have bog-standard card it came with) are brilliant. Pin sharp and I've set up a custom colour calibration for the screen because of Photoshop and InDesign and it is stunning.
    Only slight drawback is if you sit too close and are a fast typer, it's like watching tennis as your head looks from right to left as you type across the screen

  • Dead/Stuck Pixel!

    I've always loved Apple's products, and admired that their quality was superior to any other computer manufacturer. What taints this is the fact that my brand new iMac (20") has a dead or stuck pixel in its display. I think it's stuck, because it does not appear with a red background, but does show on any other color. I just called the Apple store near my house and they said that AppleCare does not cover a single pixel. Is there any way to "unstick" a pixel, or is it stuck for good?
    Oh, I've tried the video with the flashing colors, but it hasn't worked so far...

    There are two ways a pixel can be bad.
    (1) It can be stuck on, or
    (2) It can be stuck off.
    It is the first kind that can sometimes be fixed by pressure or rubbing or flashing colors. The second kind is dead forever.
    The way to tell these apart is simple. Put something that is solid white under the bad pixel. If you see the bad pixel against the white background, then you have a pixel that is stuck off.
    Put something solid black under the bad pixel. If you can see the bad pixel against black, then you have a pixel that is stuck on.
    Remember that each pixel really consists of three color dots, one red, one green, and one blue, and it is usually just one of those dots that is bad. You can figure out which by trying the pixel on solid red, blue, and green backgrounds.
    Suppose, for example, you've got a green subpixel that is stuck off. Then what you'll see against various colors is this:
    white: you'll see a dark spot
    black: looks fine
    red: looks fine
    blue: looks fine
    green: you'll see a dark spot
    Suppose you had a green subpixel stuck on. Then this is what you'd see when checking against the various backgrounds:
    white: looks fine
    black: you'll see a green spot
    red: you'll see a spot
    blue: you'll see a spot
    green: looks fine

  • One stuck pixel at 10 days...to picky?

    I'm just settling in with my new 24 inch iMac. After owning it for only 10 days it has develop one...only one stuck red pixel. It still can be exchanged under their 14 day window, but...am I just being waaaaay too picky here.
    I know this is all just personal preference etc. but the screen and computer are excellent otherwise.
    There are some "flashy" type apps. I've found to work out the stuck pixels for PC's but I haven't found one for a Mac yet.
    Any / all thoughts welcome.

    We really can't tell you what to do, but if you believe you can get it replaced then you'd better act before the 14 days is up instead of waiting here for people to give you advise that may or may not be relevant. We don't represent Apple. No one here really knows what Apple may or may not do with respect to returns, repairs, or replacements. All you can get here is anecdotes.

    Well Barry, as for the Ram, all this while are install by apple technician since very day i bought iMac on july 2008. Just wondering What's actually went wrong..
    Very first day I bought iMac, few days later, system cant even on. AppleCare Centre exchanged a new set of iMac.
    two weeks later, i notice several dead pixels appearing on screen, call to log a case with them, later on, they changed a new panel.
    After several months pass, been using happily with iMac... but since now, this problem occurs. So fastrating... My third time encounters problem with iMac. sign
    Any suggestion? If not, I guess i have to bring this bulky iMac to applecare centre again. sign

  • Major problems with my new intel g5 imac

    I recently purchased a the new Intel duo imac (20", 512 ram). The computer has been a total nightmare and I finally have a little bit of time available to hopefully start addressing some of the major issues. When I first got the system, I easily hooked it up and starting using it, everything appeared to be fine. However, I began to notice almost all the applications were unstable and always lagging. For example, the pinwheel idle icon would come up for seconds at a time while switching from safari to itunes on the bottom dock. I installed CS2 on it and realized it was barely useable, it would always crash at least once or twice during a session. The application itself was so slow, it was painstaking just to clone or resize an image. I was really frustrated at this point because the system ran extremely slow compared to my 4 year old PC, which ran photoshop and the internet flawlessly. I thought that maybe I needed to start updating the OS, because I was always prompted to do so when I would start the system up.
    I was hoping maybe the updates would make the system more stable and fix the problems I was having. I went ahead and approved all the updates to the OS etc. The update on the OS was around 190 megs, so I went to dinner and came back. When I got home it told me the updates where complete, I just needed to restart. Upon restarting I was met with a flashing Apple, the system would not allow me to get into the OS, it was stuck at start up with a flashing apple with an X through it. I did nothing but download the updates and restart. After an hour of trying to boot up in every why possible, I finally had to boot from CD, nothing solved the problem (disk repair etc). I finally had to break down and reinstall the OS.
    Now I am back to square one again, the system is useable but every application is painfully slow. I can't for example, Use Safari, listen to itunes and type in Word. It has to be one or the other, if not the lag is unbearable. Photoshop CS2 is once again barely useable, when you start the application up you can literally read every name that comes up in the splash screen because it goes so slowly (on my PC all that start up info flew by so fast I couldn't make out any of it).
    I am at my wits end with it because I love the system I just need it to be functional. I was on some other forums and people suggested I had bad ram, but I have no way to test if the ram is actually bad. Others said I was a moron for trying to run CS2 on a intel mac because it barely works (go figure). They said my only option to running decent applications like photoshop consistently was to install boot camp then windows. I don't want the solution to my problems to be the installation of an OS that I am trying to move away from, because of its supposed inferiority. I think it's sad that people need to install windows just to run photoshop and/or any software with high requirements because the new Intel mac does such a poor job. I know I need to update the system and the OS, but I don't want to have to reinstall and lose everything if it fails upon restarting again. I want things to stop crashing out of no where. Can someone please help me.

    I do know that it is easy enough to test the RAM yourself to a fairly good degree.
    Memtest is simply the best ram-testing utility for the Macintosh platform with the ability to find intermittent memory problems that are the frequent cause of unexplained crashes or freezes in Macs running MacOSX. Memtest can identify random memory problems that commercially available utilities miss completely.
    Memtest 4.13 is now distributed as a universal binary. Just double-click the OS X image file to mount it and then double click the package file to install. Besides providing support for the new Intel-based Macs, version 4.13 also adds improved status reporting for each of the individual tests.

    Memory: 512MB is very minimal. Meaning programs may not have enough to load into memory or take advantage of OS X memory management. Rosetta is almost a mini-OS but very RAM hungry. If you can, I would add another 1GB of memory at a minimum. But first test what you have now.
    Also, do run Apple Hardware Test fully as well.
    In a very rare case, it could be the disk drive itself that just needs to be erased.
    Have you tried repairing your disk drive from the Install DVD? good idea. And backup your system and files to FireWire goes mostly without saying as essential.
    If your system does do a forced shutdown/freeze, I would not rely on it repairing itself, I like to boot into Single User Mode (command + s) and run the fsck routine.
    CS3 will not be out for -?- 9 months or more and then be "Universal Binary" format. Until then, well, CS2 is itself memory hungry and people buy G5s etc so that they can use 4GB RAM or more.
    The ideal would be to upgrade to 2GB RAM, Micron/Crucial or Samsung as well as RAMjet, some place reliable and that warrants their memory fully. I don't think you'll be happy with just the 512MB. And everything was fine to begin with, so that's good.
    And there probably are some special concerns with Photoshop, with plug-ins or other applications, or just a corrupt plist/pref file.
    Without "adequate" or enough memory, any OS is going to page itself to death, 'thrashing' as it is unable to page into memory enough to run properly.
    OS: 80-200MB
    Safari or web browser: 80-400MB
    etc.

    I'm new to the forum here having recently converted. I've done a search or 2 on this issue but found nothing of note. I have one dead pixel(well its green or white sometimes) in the middle of the screen and its very annoying. I've read through all the support pages and found the usual pixel anomalies page explaing all about it.
    But It only mentions LCD's. There's no mention of LED screen, so would I be right in saying that there is no material specifying the restrictions of this and it would be considered a fault?

    It's still an LCD display. The Al MacBook displays use LED (as opposed to fluorescent) backlighting. A dead/stuck pixel is still an LCD malfunction. One dead pixel is considered normal. If it weren't the cost to the manufacturer would be considerably more in terms of rejected parts and warranty returns.

  • X220 with backlight leak and stuck pixel

    I just ordered x220 from lenovo. I recived the box yesterday and found my new thinkpad had many backlight leak and 1 stuck pixel at the center. I am very disappoint with it. Can I return it, change to new one or send to lenovo sevice center in thailand to change my IPS display.
    I ordered it on 5/26/11. My friend in USA passed it to me on 6/6/11 then I recieved package in Thailand on 6/10/11.

    the current policy is that a display must have three or more dead or stuck pixels to be considered defective.   one is simply not enough.

    regarding the backlight bleed, it looks normal to me for an LED notebook panel.   i could create a condition where even $5000 IPS graphics displays show some sort of backlight bleed on a black background with brightness at full power.   no display is perfect in this regard.   my X220 IPS panel has a slight amount of bleed under the right conditions but is only noticable 1% of the time.
    if this is unsatisfactory, you may try contacting lenovo support in thailand at 1-800-060-066 or 66 2273 4088 between 8AM and 5PM monday-friday.   however, please note that they will likely refer to the same pixel policy above.   whether or not they will make an acception due to the location of the stuck pixel is up to them.

  • Hp veer stuck pixels?

    I have a new veer that i got off from someone unlocked over ebay. A few weeks i reboot the phone and notice that theres around 8-10 stuck pixels on the screen. I tried looking for a way to get it fixed over warranty, but it only gives a phone number to AT&T, which I dont have. Is there a way i can get the warranty for my phone over the stuck pixels?

    You can call webOS tech support at 877-426-3777 to get a repair or replacement set up. If this device has been modified for another carrier it will be restored back to AT&T defaults including it being locked to AT&T.

    Hi there,
    I had my iphone in my pocket yesterday when I was in the workshop at college. I was in a car and my leg got wedged by the steering wheel, the leg with the iphone in the pocket. Checking it after, the phone was fine and is protected by a leather case. Later on, I was in my car using my phone to play music. I noticed a little cluster of greyish pixels. Thought not much of it, as it's a second hand iphone and is out of warranty, but this morning, (after my partner threw my phone across the room onto the bed), there are now lines travelling a long the screen from this small cluster.
    I'm not sure whether they're dead or not. I would rather have apple look at it, but I want to know how expensive it is to get a screen repair, or whether it worth paying for a whole recondition phone.
    Not having luck the past two months with phones. If I get a new one, it'll be my third.
