New 2008 Intel Mac CS3 and Actions with F keys

I just upgraded from my old ppc mac that was running Tiger and CS3. I have a new Mac Pro 2008 running Leopard and CS3. I have a number of Actions that are assigned an F key that I cannot use because they are corresponding to the system function keys. Does anyone know how I get the use of my F keys back in CS3.

Try this: open System Preferences, Keyboard & Mouse, and in the Keyboard Shortcuts section turn off what you want. I have them all turned off except the Screen Shots.

I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lightroom 5 okay if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?  What will happen to the applications that aren't 64-bit compatible?  Also the Eye-one Display 2 colorimeter to calibrate the monitor will not run on Lion, so that will be an expensive upgrade to an i1DisplayPro. Is the upgrade important enough to offset the expense?  I have an Epson R2000 printer.  Will there be problems with the drivers if I upgrade to Lion?  It would be great to hear from other mac users who are also photographers and who print their own photos.

Before upgrading to Lion be sure to read this link:

Looking at http://www.everymac.com/ even the earliest 2008 iMac was fully 64 bit, even though Boot Camp doesn't support 64 bit Windows on that machine.

Clarisworks, you need Appleworks, which will only work with Mac OS X10.6.8 or earlier.  See this tip if you must go newer.  Mac Pros with newer hardware configuration than July 20, 2011 can't use Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier without this tip and then it would be Mac OS X Server.  I'm not sure if the new black Mac Pro supports that configuration or not.
iPhoto, there is an iPhoto for all versions of Mac OS X.
iTunes, there is an iTunes for all versions of Mac OS X.  Note with iTunes versions 11 and later, which are needed for syncing with iOS 7 or or later, you will lose coverflow, if you liked that feature.  Sadly you can't run an older version of iTunes from within Mac OS X 10.9 or later.
Sketchup: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/60107 shows the versions that will work with intermediate Mac OS X versions, and this shows the latest version: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/36208 be sure to click on the operating system you choose to use.

DMG is able to be opened by all versions of Mac OS X.  This are just "disk images" which store programs on a virtual disk that will open when double clicked.    Frequently you'll find the installer of the said program inside.  To find out if the program itself is compatible with 10.7 through 10.9, see http://www.roaringapps.com/

  • Intel Mac Mini and Sony Wega displays

I purchased one of the G4 based Minis for use in my media center. At that time I had quite a bit of difficulty getting it to work with my Sony KDF-60xs955 60" HDTV. I did eventually get it working and stable but the process, when written down for others in this forum post, is somewhat intimidating.
My parents really need a new machine for their daily use and I'm going to be donating that Mini to them. Before I replace it with a new intel Mini (yay Front Row!) I want to know whether it will autodetect my television or not. I have no desire to spend the 4-5 hours needed to hack it into working again, plus the hassle of getting it to work again any time I switch displays for a few hours. More importantly I don't feel like I should have to...The HDTV is automatically detected by a PowerBook and that works flawlessly.
One of the major reasons I pay higher prices to Apple is so that it just works. My new iMac? It just works. My old PowerBook? It just works. My old Mac Mini? Not so much... So, here I am hoping to get an answer out of these forums: To buy or not to buy that is the question, whether tis nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous non-support or to take my cash away from this sea of troubles and by opposing end them.
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
I have downloaded the lastest Windows Media Player from Microsoft for Mac OS X, but it doesn't officially support the Intel Macs. It runs with wmv videos from my harddisk, for example, but I also can't play the amazon.com sound samples (I just tried). I guess it's because the Windows Media Player is running via Rosetta, maybe there is some problem there.
For the moment I could only suggest to use the Real-player sound samples as a work-around. Real player does work on the Intel Mac with these sound samples. Just that on my machine it does only download and I have to start it from the desktop instead of right inside of Safari. Maybe it's just a question of preferences, but it does work, at least.

Look on the outside of the case to see if it has a port with a symbol similar to a Y, or compare its specifications against those of the first two computers on this list.

  • Brand new to the Mac World and NEED SOME HELP with startup disk issues

Hello everyone. I am a new Mac user and I purchased my mac on ebay. It's an iMac that came with tiger 10.4.11. I wanted to get a fresh start on the computer, since the person who had it before me did not erase all of his stuff. I didn't know what to do so I got a startup disk/install disk off ebay also. When I go to install it says "software cannot be installed on this computer." Before I bought the software, I had called the apple store and they said it should be fine to buy any install software to put on the computer. If I could get any help it would be appreciated. I had read previous threads that I should hold down c when I start up (didn't work) or that I should select archive or erase and install (I never got these options when I went to install).

A warm welcome to the Discussions!
What iMac is it? I only ask as the Retail Tiger CD/DVDs don't work on IntelMacs, only PPC, (G3, G4, G5 Macs).
Sorry what you were told by the Apple Store, but if it's a Gray CD/DVD then it is Machine specific as Neil stated.
Sooo, what exact iMac is it, and what does it say on the CD/DVD?

  • Using ms office 2008 for mac home & student edition with snow leopard serv

    Hi all,
I have a very particular question.
I have a new small business starting up and we want to make full use of leopard and snow leopard server in our infrastructure. We also want to use os x for all our client machines.
We want to use ms office 2008 for mac as our main offfice software but i believe we don't need all the uses or festures of the business edtion and i need to seek good advice and clarity on this.
We won't ever use any microsoft exchange servers but instead willl use the apple mail servers and all the other apple server services.
My question is, based on the fact that we will have an all apple mac os x backend and client frontend but want to use the ms office for mac as our business software, and also based on the fact that we wont use the "Build your Brand clip art, Build your skills by lynda.com, the Remote Desktop for mac 2, the Microsoft Exchange Server Support and the Microsoft Windows sharepoint services support, do we really need to go for the business edition? Can we not just use the home and student edition and get the same functionality using everything else apart form what we listed as we wont need these?
The other question is, the Entourage 2008, Web services Edition, will this work with an apple backend instead of ms exchange server?
Kind regards and thanks for your wise advice,
    Neil Watson

    Thanks, Kurt--I understand now.
One reason I was alarmed was that evidently when the tech installed Office 2008, something went awry with either the key installer or the key code, because when I finished the first two updates (12.1 and 12.2), I tried to open Entourage to see if the problem I'd been having was resolved. Instead of opening, Office gave me a message that my product key was invalid!  I did find the product key, and called the tech, who will come by to see what's wrong (he's an honest guy, so I'm sure it's a legitimate error of some kind, not a pirated copy). But the thought of installing two pages of updates and maybe running into the same glitch every time made me blanch.  So I'm glad to know that Microsoft is still doing Service Packs for 2008!

  • New HD and new motherboard on Mac Mini and OSX will not start.

Long story but will do my best to keep it short...
Purchased Mac mini #1 at CompUSA years back and bought their extended warranty. Mini died 2+ years later which coincided with CUSA going out of business. Problem was a flashing folder with the Mac logo and a "?" at startup. My CUSA store was closing out and would not service my machine and gave me a phone number for the outsourced warranty/repair department. The tech took my info and decided a new HD was in order. I rec'd the new HD in the mail and a local tech came out and installed it (but refused to test it). After the tech left the same problem was found. Called warranty department immediately (literally 5 minutes later) and they siad they would send another HD as well as a mother board which I recieved a few days later. However, this time the local tech never showed back up and after a few weeks of calling the warranty number went dead. We ended up getting a new Mac mini which has been running fine since.
My daughter needed a computer so I figured I would give it a shot. It was actually very easy to replace the HD and MB. I tried starting the mini and it powers up but I got the same flashing folder so I put in the OS intall disc and after I select the language, I get a prompt that says "This software cannot be installed on this computer". I am using the original discs that came with this particular mini. I cannot get disc #1 out of the drive now but disc #2 says "Mac OSX Install Disc 2", "includes Mac OS9.2", and Disc version 1.3 2Z691-5533-A" on it. The mini itself says Mac mini 1.25G4/512MB/40GB/Combo/Modem on the underside.
Is this due to the fact that the entire inside of the Mini is new and now not compatible with the original software? How would I know what software to buy? Am I better off just taking it somewhere to get serviced or calling it a total loss? Any guidance would be much appreciated.

One the one hand I am being told that my OS discs are not working because they are unique (or keyed) to the original machine and since that machine essentially no loger exists due to repalacing the MB, I will need to purchase new software with a new license agreement.
It is true that computer specific install software is specific to the software with which it shipped. However replacing the logic board means that the new logic board is part of the computer. Unless the logic board was not an exact replacement, it should not make a difference; the original disks should work. In other words it has to do with the hardware not the license. The software license agreement allows the installation of a certain OS to one computer at a time, unless you have a multi-user license such as a family pack, which allows installation in up to five computers in the same household. The original computer specific software can be installed on a single computer no matter how many times. If that OS in that computer has been upgraded to a later OS, that installer can be used to install to another computer of the identical model so long as it is not simultaneously installed elsewhere. However, even then, it can technically be installed on another computer of the same model although installation of a single user licensed software will be a violation of the terms of the Software License Agreement.
The second opinion was that the original mini was equippmed with a powerpc processor and that the new MB I received is equipped with an intel processor.
True. Models of the mini released in 2005 and Early 2006 have PowerPC processors. Late 2006 and later have Intel processors.
Therefore, that pesron recommended that I purchase OSX 10.5 Leopard as this OS will cover both of those processors.
    Partly true.
    i. If your mini was released with Tiger it will support OS X 10.5x and later. If it was released in Early 2009 with Mac OS X 10.5.6 (9G2030) it will only support versions of Leopard earlier than 10.5.6 and, certainly OS X 10.6x.
ii. It will only both computers if you have a multi-user license.
iii. New Leopard installers will only install on your old mini if the original installer itself was the problem. If the problem is elsewhere, it is not quite as certain. Unfortunately there is no sure way to know that unless you buy the Full Retail Version of Leopard and attempt installing it.

  • Intel Mac Mini runs slow with more than one app running.

Hello, I just bought a new 1.66 Mac Mini. It's stock. When I don't have any applications open and I go to open one like a web browser or iTunes, they open very fast. If I have say iTunes or a browser open and I go to open another app, it opens very slow. I have counted up to 12 bounces of the icon before an app will open but the same app will open in one or two bounces of the icon if nothing else is open. Is this caused by only having 512Mb of RAM?

I have never tried the Sims 2 (PC version) on a PC with integrated graphics, but I got good performance on a Dell laptop (512 MB RAM, Intel Pentium M 1.4 Ghz, nVidia GeForce Go5200 FX / 64 MB VRAM). I don't know how much impact the integrated graphics could have on its performance. Upgrading to 1 GB, however, should ensure that you get decent performance and even if you don't need that Gig it will make your computer faster.

  • Foxfire 4.0 will not launch, just down new loaded, to MAC G4 and clicked on new Icon. Any Help.

Downloaded upgrade 4.0 into Mac Applications and dragged New Icon into Shortcuts. The a window popped up stating a new security update needs to be installed. Clicked install and it run ... connecting to server for several minutes, but never seemed to connect.
In the mean time I tried to open 4.0 from shortcut and was prompted with will not launch -10661? Why? And the update, is probably still running to connect to server on my other computer for all I know, and not connecting.
I also noticed that in the install window where you drag the product into the application box, right above the Icon to drag there was a confusing statement that said 1 of 2.
So after I dragged Icon once into applications and finished install I dragged the Icon a second time to see if there was a second part. But all that happened was an over write to the initial install. How can I get this new version to run?
Never had any sort of problem downloading and running on my Sony PC, by the way ... there both laptops.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

  • Intel Mac freezing and screen going black

    Hi,
Has this been happening to anyone else? My Intel Mac was freezing up a lot a month or so ago. It mostly happened while I was using Motion 2, but also while using Firefox or when it was asleep.
I did a clean install of Tiger and only updated to 10.4.9 (I thought the newest OS update may have caused the problem.)
It has froze a few times since then, but not as often. Just now I was working in Photoshop and the Finder and the screen just went black like it was asleep, but would not wake up. I finally did a hard reboot using the power button.
(When it was freezing up about a month ago, usually the screen would freeze up or I would get the spinning beach ball of death.)
After I rebooted the error report alert came up and here is the report:

Any advice or suggestions? Call Apple Care again?
    Thanks!

This is how I would approach it:
_Initial troubleshooting_ (you've probably done this already – sometimes it is easier to fix the problem without finding the root cause)
    - +Disk Utility+. Boot from the Mac OS® X install CD. After the language selection screen, when the main screen comes up, wait until the menu bar at the top of the screen populates. Then select Disk Utility from the menu. More information is available:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301170
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
    - Reset NVRAM/PRAM. See:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
_Further troubleshooting_: the following may assist in isolating the cause of the kernel panic.
+If the problem still occurs primarily in only one program+ (such as Motion 2), then uninstall that program.
+If it seems the problem is random now+: did you install any new hardware recently? If yes, then remove that hardware and see if the problem still occurs.
+In System Preferences+, under Sharing, make sure that file sharing, Windows sharing, web sharing, remote login, etc. are turned off.
+Hardware diagnostics+: on some Macs, you can run an Apple® Hardware Test by holding down the '''d''' button while booting the computer from the Mac® OS X install CD. You may see a blue screen with a small icon in the middle. After about 2 minutes, instructions will appear; please follow the on-screen instructions for running an "extended" test. If the Apple Hardware Test finds a problem, then take the computer to the Genius Bar® at the local Apple store, or call AppleCare® again; maybe with the 12GB of RAM you have, some of might be bad. Also, when you visit the Genius Bar or call Apple Care, have a printout of the above (your post) available; additionally, you may wish to write down the kernel panic message again so the support staff or you yourself can compare the 2 error screens and see how they are similar or different. Anyway I strongly suspect a hardware problem but it could be almost anything.
+Open up your favorite antivirus program+ and scan the entire hard drive just to make sure, if you have not already done so.
If all else fails and you need to reformat (you should probably go to the Apple Store to rule out any hardware problems before doing this), then choose the "zero all data" option under "security options" in the Disk Utility program. This erases the entire disk, not just the directory structure.
In conclusion I think you are right about calling AppleCare again but I hope these steps are useful (if they are not a recapitulation of what you already know).

  • Intel Mac mini and widescreen TV output (analog)

I just replaced my 1.25 GHz mini with a dual-core Intel one, and are really disappointed that the wide-screen resolution options are nowhere to be found. I'm using the Apple DVI-to-Video adapter with an S-Video cable.
On the G4 Mac mini, I would get 640x480 (NTSC 4:3), 800x480 (NTSC 16:9), 768x576 (PAL 4:3) and 1024x576 (PAL 16:9). Together with Overscan and Best for Video, I got a really nice picture on my 16:9 CRT TV (can display PAL and NTSC in either 4:3 or 16:9).
With the Intel Mac mini, I only get 640x480.
(The other available resolutions do not match with the actual NTSC or PAL frequencies or aspect ratios. For example, 720x480 or 720x576 is used as the pixel format for some digital media, but the pixels are not square, and so far, all software expects display pixels to be square. So it's actually quite useless.)
Is there a trick to get those resolutions to show up in Displays and become usable?

1.) I am using either 1920x1080 (interlaced) which is the resultion that has the worst problem with text sharpness. Now, I have discovered the Zoom feature in OSX and I can use it to some degree to make things readable. This may be my best option.
2.) I have done the calibraton and it does look quite a bit better. Those the DVD output is good but not great.
3.) Apparently, from what I have read, this is a common problem. Maybe a driver upgrade from Apple or Intel could fix?
I bought a Philips DVI cable. I know it's not the best but it should suffice. Monster cables seem to be overpriced. I plan to hook my PC to my HDTV with the same cable. My ATi card supports HD resolutions as well.
I also hooked the mini to my CRT that I have on my Dell and it looks very good there. I am impressed that OSX adjusts the resoltions that it can display upon boot. Even which switching displays.

  • New Macbook Pro, iTunes match and syncing with an iPod classc??

    Hi,
I recently bought a MBP and I have iTunes Match, so my itunes on the MBP contains my music 'in the cloud'. I also have an iPod classic and want to sync it to update it.
If I plug it in to my new macbook will it sync with 'itunes match' and update with new songs that I've downloaded?
I thought I might have to download all my music from Match to the hard drive of the macbook, but as there is 25gb it is going to take days!!
