New 2011 MacBook Pro - Constant clicking noise (every 10 or 15 sec)

HI there,
I've got an issue about clicking noises coming from the right of the Macbook.
It feels like the SMS working, but it does this sound even with no movement at all, when sitting on my desk...
It's not very loud, but it can become annoying as it really is constant. A click (sounds like a needle clicking on something), followed sometimes by a subbtle "hum". What's your feeling about it? Would it be the SMS being too sensitive ?

Well, after some research, I've got more details: It seems that the sound is the same the HDD does when the MBP shuts down. When the sound comes, it seems the HDD runs for a changing period of time (from 1 to 15 secs) and then returns back to normal. When it does so, the disk activity monitors a red spike whcih is alos variable. It is not the SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor) as I turned it down in Terminal.
So, with that info, can anyone help me?

Order a Snow Leopard 10.6 install disk for $29 from The Apple Store as long as you have at least 1gb of RAM. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window.
Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. You should see your hard drive in the left hand column along with your other drives. Click on the drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in a Name for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. The usual setting is one partition. Click on the Options button after you've selected a partition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the Partitioning is done quit Disk Utility.
You can now follow the instructions on the install screen

    NicholasLiban -
When you use the Lion restore as described, it does a fresh install on the hard drive that you can select at the beginning of the process.  This provides a complete install of the very latest version of Lion, including the recovery partition.  The drive that you choose for the installation destination winds up like what you would have on a brand new computer from Apple.

  • New 2011 macbook pro 13"-

Just got a new 2011 macbook pro 13".
What is the best way to run my guitar into it, to record in garageband without latency issues?
Thanx in advance for your help

The problem for me is that I've read reviews on several of the interfaces on the list I was directed to, where one person had no latency issues, and then somewhere else the poster/reviewer testifies that they were plagued by latency issues.
After forking out the cash for a new Mac and then a couple more for an an interface, that'd be a tough pill to swallow!!
Fortunately, it's not one you have to worry about.
The latency you're talking about is caused by the computer, not the interface:
The interface converts the audio from analog to digital and sends it into the computer. Once in the computer, it gets sent into Garageband (or whatever audio program you're using), and any effects you've selected are applied to it, and then it is sent back out to the interface to be reconverted into an analog signal you can hear.
All the "heavy lifting" occurs in the computer itself, so the source of latency is really the time it takes the computer to process the audio, apply the effects algorithms, and send it back to the interface.
(There is latency in any circuit, but the latency in the interface itself is negligible compared to how long it can be delayed in the computer).
Your new computer is plenty fast (and has enough RAM) to do basic recording without latency.
I'm guessing you won't even have to resort to the kind of "zero latency" local monitoring that Hangtime suggested (i.e. listening to your signal locally, bypassing its journey into your computer, through its algorithms, and back out again). Although as it's true that doing that always provides the least latency of all, if that's an important safety net for you, you might want to get an interface with that feature -  a number of them now offer it.
But I would guess that if you plug any contemporary interface into your computer, and plug your guitar into it, you shouldn't be bothered by latency.
FWIW - a good online source for gear is Sweetwater. Here's their audio interface page for Firewire:
    http://www.sweetwater.com/c683--FireWire_Audio_Interfaces
    ... and for USB:
    http://www.sweetwater.com/c695--USB_Audio_Interfaces
Firewire interfaces tend to be higher end than USB, but cost a little more as well.
    Good luck!

  • Brand New 2011 Macbook pro Not Charging while Plugged in

I purhcased a brand new 2011 17" macbook pro. The macbook will charge up to 100% while nothing is plugged in. When i start running applications it will switch to "Not charging" on the toolbar. This is while its plugged in.
This has happned when i have just 2 apps open.
I DJ a nightclub and sometimes have 4 apps open, which is not a lot and this doenst  happen with my 2009 17" macbook pro.
I have done the SMC reset and this still happens.
I have read all the fourms and googled it and see im not alone.
From what i can see, and makes sense is, the new Quad-Core processors use more power, and with just the macbook running, even openign up 2 apps, its using about 95W of power. With the powersupply only 85W, it makes sense how it can switch to not charging.
From what i have seen, it will actually go down to about 3% of charge and stay there. It will say Not chargeing for a while, then go away like its charging, then switch back to not charging. It basicllys charges it enough to keep it around 3%.
now if i turn off all apps, it will charge back up, but that is hard to do in the middle of DJ'n the nightclub.
I know my best friend has this same issue on his 2011 macbook pro, he bought online from Apple, and i got mine from an Apple store about 4 months later, so i know its not the same batch.
I just want to know if anyone else is seeing this on the 2011 quad-core laptops and does anyone know if Apple is aware of this and are there plans on updating the powersupply to provide more power. Maybe 85W is not enough to charge it.
I have not opened a ticket with Apple yet but i will.
I just wanted to post this up to see if anyone is seeing this same thing.
    Thanks

Hello, I have had very similar problems but with the MBP not even registering that a charger is plugged in (no light coming on and no change to the battery symbol).
I had a mid 2010 model that was sent in 4 times to be fixed, with no change, followed by the unit being replaced altogether with the latest 2011 model, only to find the issue persists (the charger was replaced early on as well).
The only retaining factor is the Lion software which forums have highlighted has effected charging when individuals have upgraded.
It is appalling that a company like Apple have not taken steps to address these issues and will go as far as to replace all components TWICE in one Laptop, as well as give out a new Laptop, without tackling the real problem.
    Appalled and ultimately very disappointed.

  • Brand New MacBook Pro making clicking noise whenever unibody is touched

This is rather strange. and i find it disturbing.
i just got my brand new macbook pro with i7.... and i put it on my lap, everytime I type or slightly touch the side of the computer (say areas next to the mouse pad), the computer internally is making those clicking noise sound like something is being bent, it is hard to explain, but all the tiny clicking and popping sound....at the start i thought it was the ethernet cable, the metal connectors were flicking against something, but then i realised its not...
when we put our hands on the laptop and type, we are bound to press on the surface of the unibody, and this annoying sound is happening all the time. i can say it doesnt sound like a HD sound, it just sounds like metal clicking against each other or something

I have the exact same problem on my brand new i7 MBP 15. The clicks are very high in pitch and sharp, and startling like something is breaking, and happen frequently. They seem to happen quite for no apparent reason other than, you know, I click the trackpad-button or something. The clicks seem to be coming from the left side... possibly lower left but I can't be certain. (It does agree with your ethernet impression.)
It does not feel acceptable at all-- I'd be very surprised if Apple thinks this is "normal."
The timing is totally random. I can't seem to really cause it on demand.
Anecdotally, it seems to only happen when running on my lap. I can't find anything in my keys or wallet that affects the computers, so I'm not sure if this is related.
And NO, it's absolutely positively NOT freefall detection that's causing this. You can verify this by simulating freefall (safely!). Hold the computer firmly, and lower it somewhat quickly by several inches. You get a very different, soft click that's not whatsoever alarming. This softer "parking" click also comes from a different place in the computer, on the right hand side.

  • Macbook pro occasional clicking noise

I have a Mid-2012 Macbook Pro (not retina) that I purchased earlier this month. It would run silently but then after a while it started to make an annoying click every once and a while without a pattern. I've never heard any of my friends' MacBooks make this noise and my old white one did not make this noise either. I assumed the clicking wasn't normal so I took it in and they said there could be something wrong with my hard drive and gave me a new Macbook. Now I am using that Macbook and today it started making the clicking noise too. Is it normal for a Macbook Pro to make this clicking noise or do I have to take this one in too?

The problem is that the HDD, Optical drive and fan are located next to each other.
With the MBP in its normal oprating position, the Optical Drive is in the right hand corner near the display.
Just to the left of it is the fan.
The HDD is on the right side, nearest the operator, again adjacent to the Optical drive.

  • Brand new 2011 macbook pro (preinstalled lion osx) is too slow! Is there anyway to role back to previous OS if it came pre-installed?

I purchased new macbook pro 15" with quad core 2.2 ghz intel i7, 8gb of ram.  I swear to god it is slower than my previous 2008 macbook running leopard OS.  I use heavy programs pretty often, adobe CS5 and 3D modeling and some rendering on the mac side and and a bit of 3D work with fusion on windows.  I was really expecting a performance boost with the new computer, but Lion is annoyingly slow.  Even if I am not using any of the heavy stuff and just browsing on the internet, it seems noticeably slower than the 2008 macbook. Typing lags sometimes, genie effect and opening effect lags. The iOS type features are also sluggish.  I am about ready to start working again on my old macbook on leopard.  I haven't had any issues with the machine completely freezing (though I have had to force quit apps a few times).  It is definitely a usable machine, but for the price and newness I expect the performance to be better than the 2008 macbook.  From what I have read on the forums, I am blaming the buggy Lion OS for my troubles.  I figured the OS might still have some bugs as it was brand new, but this is more than I bargained for.
Does anyone know if it is possible to role back to Snow Leopard? I have heard it can't be done if the computer came pre-installed with Lion OS, but surely some clever people have figured a way...

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.
I am not using Filevault, and the closest genius bar is 4 hours away, so I am trying to figure out a solution via internet.   I will check out the Fusion update, though I expect that to be slow (that is the price you pay for running windows on a mac!)
I am surprised you havent noticed the resume/restore windows, docs, and apps feature (for both subsequent openings of program and reboot of system- new to Lion OS) I use the term feature lightly as they didnt seem to work properly initially, like they had cached older stuff than when I actually quit an app or shut down.  After the first couple of times of the computer stalling trying to reopen an application with a heavy document or restarting and trying to open EVERY program I had used the day before, I disabled the features.  To disable required a bit of a hack with Terminal.
    to disable on restart:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/25/disable-reopen-windows-when-logging-back-in-in-ma c-os-x-lion-completely/
    to disable resuming applications:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/18/disable-mac-os-x-lion-resume-window-restore/
--only that doesn't really work (which if you scroll through the comments below you will see what people post about it) I had to expose the hidden library, delete some stuff there, and run some stuff in terminal to get this feature totally disabled, blah blah blah.
These seem like good ideas, but definitely need some tweaking to work properly.  I like the iOS features in Mission Control, but the lagging animations are absolutely unacceptable. Even dragging an icon across starts out jerky and sluggish. I never noticed any issue with the OS animations on the 2008 Macbook running Leopard.
Anyway, there are known compatibility issues with Lion and Adobe Creative Suite.  Adobe CS5 products are what I use most often, so I would like to role back to Snow leopard, though it is reported that Apple has made that impossible on the new machines that shipped with Lion.

  • 30in apple display with NEW 2011 macbook pro

I have a new macbook pro 2011 15in but when i plug the mini display port to dvi in top the dvi connetion from the display it will show a clear image but is very zoomed in an you can see the pixles very clearly which is verry hard to work with when i work beaucse I do websites, and work with photos and i need a very clear picture

Open the Displays pane of System Preferences and select a higher resolution. If it won't let you pick one beyond 1280 by 800, you need to use a dual-link DVI adaptor.

  • Snow Leopard on new 2011 MacBook Pro?

I need to buy a new MacBook pro, as my early 2008 model just died on a road gig (4 months out of warranty) but most of my drafting software has been found to be incompatible with lion, is it possible/simple to put snow leopard on a brand new MBP 15"?

Yes. You can create a second partition on which to install a copy of Snow Leopard.
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

  • Brand new 2011 MacBook Pro Randomly freezing

    Hi,
Im a bit concerned I have just got a BRAND NEW MacBook Pro 2011 and already I have had 4-5 random freezes where i have had to hold down the power button to bring it back to life!!
These have happend as i said just randomly, for example i lifted the lid to wake it from sleep mode and it just frooze on me, became totally unresponsive??
Another example was when i went to paste a url using cmd-v and it frooze on me??
I'm a bit dissapointed as I have just switched from windows PC's because I had had enough of that sort of thing and believed these where solid machines with very little issues comapred to a windows system!! and for 2k I don't exect it to freeze especially within a week!!
I'm hoping its down to software issues to which a software or OSx update will solve.
    Any Ideas?

  • Why does my MacBook Pro make clicking noises when pressure is applied to the unibody?

I purchased a MacBook Pro in late July of this year. Recently, I have noticed that when I begin to type on the keyboard, the unibody will make a faint sound when pressure from my hands is applied to the MacBook. I also notice a faint clicking noise when I pick up the MacBook Pro to move it somewhere. Additionally, the screen hinge makes a faint clicking noise when the screen is opened. Are these sounds normal?

Check if an AASP (Apple Authorised Service Provider) is closer, as some do not trust Geek Squad to diagnose something as simple as "all the keys are missing". But judge for yourself.: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434

  • Captions too small on a new 2011 MacBook Pro 15" 1,680-by-1,050 screen

I have just purchased a new 2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 MacBook Pro with the extended wide screen option which is truly a brilliant screen. However, as this was purchased for an aged relative who wanted the best Mac she could buy in a 15" version, the type captions under (for example) the Macintosh HD and other desk top programmes is so small that you need to be wearing magnifying lenses to see all type, including that generated in emails etc. I know how to increase the size of icons on the screen but is there a way of increasing the general type sizes without having to go down to a small resolution such as (say) 1440 x 900 which somewhat defeats the point in buying a high res screen?

The fonts used for the desktop icons are defaulted to 12 pt. This can be increased up to a 16 pt font.
While in the Finder, go to the View menu > Show View Options (Command + J).
This is the same settings box where you probably changed the size of the desktop icons themselves. In this settings box, look for the option titled "Text Size." Again, it should be defaulted to 12 pt. Bump it all the way up to 16 pt and this will make reading the desktop icons much easier.
As for other applications, things like Safari give you a way to zoom the text and other elements on the page. In Safari, go to View > Zoom In (Command and +).
In Apple's Mail application, go to Format > Style > Bigger (Command and +).
I am using Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.8). I don't know if anything I have suggested has changed in Snow Leopard (10.6) which all current machines ship with.

  • HD playback stutters on new 2011 Macbook Pros

I just got back testing the new Macbook Pros to see how they can handle playback of high quality HD video from my camcorder and they struggled just like my '08 15" Macbook Pro does now. My test video was 30 sec. long and shot in 1080p at 60fps. Playback on the '11 13" and 15" Macbook Pros stuttered. I thought with the faster CPU and better GPU (on the 15" models), this shouldn't happen.
Should I be looking into the 17" Macbook Pros or even the Mac Pros if I want smooth playback of high quality HD video?

What did you think when you bought the underspecced iMac. Did you actually intended to use it for Pemiere CS5.5 or FCP. if you google CS5 vs FCP, you will see that the majority are moving from FCP to CS5 because of the MPE. As a user of both I will tell you that FCP will not be able to edit your 5D material natively, which means you will have to transcode them to mov files first before you can use them in FCP, and the process will be more than real time on the current specs of your imac. The choice is still yours anyway.
