New 2012 Envy 17 install SSD

I just purchased a new 2012 HP Envy 17.  I also purchased a Corsair 180 GB SSD.  I want to install the SSD making it my primary drive, using the 1 TB drive that was installed on the computer as a secondary drive.
I have already created the Windows 7 64-bit restore disks (5 DVD's) and a Windows Repair disk.
Doing some research it looks like I need an HP disk caddy to correctly install the SSD.  Where can I purchase one of these for this computer?
Do I need to install the SSD  in the drive slot where the 1 TB drive is now?
Do I need specific drivers?
Anything else that I am missing?
Thanks for your help.

If you want to take advantage of the performance increase the SSD offers, you will need to clone the current hard disk to the SSD and replace the curent hard disk with it.
You can put the current hard disk in the available hard disk bay and connect it to the empty SATA port.
You will to purchase a Hard Drive Hardware Kit  HP part number 720237-001. The kit includes all hardware and required cable with connectors.
If you just want the SSD in your notebook without the current hard disk, then it is  considerably simpler. Purchase the SSD as a migration kit that includes the usb to SATA cable and cloning software.  Clone the disk to the SSD. Put it in the current hard disk's place. Boot up your notebook and enjoy the performance increase that your SSD upgrade brings to your notebook.
I used a Samsung SSD EVO 840 and a migration kit to do this in a notebook.

  • New Yoga 2 11 - Installed SSD but can't get Windows 8.1 to load

I just bought the base model Yoga 2 with a traditional hard drive.  I have a brand new Samsung 830 256GB SSD drive that I wanted to install.  I read on Lenovo's support site that Lenovo no longer offers recovery disks, since this laptop doesn't have a built in CD/DVD drive.  But, the support article did say that you can make a recovery disk onto a USB drive.  So before I put the new SSD drive in, I created a recover disk on a USB drive.  I then pulled the original hard drive and installed the SSD.  I booted off the USB drive and did a reset my computer.  It starts restetting/restoring and only get's to 1% before it says "there was a problem resetting your PC".   It gives no additional information.  I've tried going into the advanced options and looking for a recovery image, but it can't find one...even though I am booting from the USB drive
I called Lenovo support and talked to two different guys.  The first guy had me go into BIOS and try to change some settings, but apparently my BIOS was different than his, becuse I didn't have the exact same options.  The next support guy told me the only way to put windows on my new SSD is to order the recovery disks from Lenovo, but in my case it would have to be a recovery USB drive.  He wanted to charge me $69 for a recovery USB drive!  I told him I have a usb DVD drive and asked if he could send me disks instead, but he said the cost would be the same.  What is going on here???
I can't believe this has to be so difficult.  Is the recovery option trying to find a recovery file on the new SSD and is that why it's failing?  Why can't Lenovo provide the customer with free recovery disks?  I follwed the instuctions exactly on the Lenovo documentation, but I assume this is only good for restoring the original hard drive.  Any one have a solution?

    hi jbobst,
There are reports that you can't use the recovery drive with a blank HDD (like the case in this thread) but if the recovery drive files are correctly written, you should be able to restore on a blank HDD as discussed in this article.
Also, note that the "Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive" is essential as this contains the recovery image (.wim file) that restores Windows into

Alternatively, you can also try to migrate the HDD to the SSD.
    Using Samsung Data Migration Software:
    1. Download and install the Samsung Data Migration Software
    2. Connect the Samsung SSD to a 2.5" USB SATA Enclosure
    3. Choose the Source Disk and Targer Disk and click Start to begin the data migration process.
    4. Once the cloning is done, shut the machine off, remove the stock HDD and replace it with the Samsung SSD and observe.

    2. Connect the Samsung SSD to a 2.5" USB SATA Enclosure
    3. Follow this guide on how to migrate the HDD to the Samsung SSD

  • MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 SSD Dual Drive Installation , i need to install ssd or hdd without removing my optical drive?

    salam 3lykum,
my MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 need to install SSD Dual Drive in the enclosure in the laptop, but without removing my optical drive? can one help me. and without cable sata to usb to use it external.

I only know of one 2 terabyte drive that will fit in a notebook - and it comes in an enclosure that you must disassemble to get to the drive -> http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FRHTSK4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&coli d=110YIC0GU53A7&coliid=I38PEBUNYX6OUM&psc=1.
HGST does make a 1.5 terabyte drive that would work quite well in your machine - the Travelstar 5K1500.

  • Having problems cloning a new hard drive to install in Macbook Pro 2012

I have a 2009 MBP and I just bought a Crucial 256GB SSD drive. I have cloned it a couple of ways (SuperDuper & CCC) and also tried installing my MBP hybrid drive into the new 2012 MBP. Nothing I have tried has worked. What happens is when I boot I hear a loud beep and then in about 15-20 seconds I get the circle with a cross through it. The original drive in the 2012 MBP works fine but obviously I want all my data from my 2009 MBP + my shiny new SSD drive.
    Any ideas?!?

    Do this:
Install the drive back to your Macbook 2012.  Put your Crucial SSD in a USB enclosure.
Go to your utilities folder and open Migration Assitant and copy the files or apps over using that.
Once you've done that and you can see your files and apps on the 2012 Macbook.
You can now proceed in formatting or erasing your SSD using Disk Utility. Format it MAC OS Extended Journaled.
Open Carbon Copy and start cloning.  Source Drive your macbook hard drive.  Destination: your SSD.
Now hit clone - you will get a pop up sayingt that a recovery partition is was not created.  Create one using Carbon Copy.  Once that's done, proceed with the clone.
Once the clone is done, then install your SSD in your 2012 Macbook and everything should now boot up fine.
If you find your boot time is taking too long after you've installed your SSD, go to system preferences - startup disk and select your SSD as the startup, restart and you should be up to speed now.
Good luck and don't do any short cuts - follow these steps so you won't have any issues.

  • Problems upgrading new Envy 14t-j000 (new July 2015 model) to SSD

I'm trying to upgrade a brand new Envy 14t laptop to include an SSD to improve its performance. No SSD was available as a CTO option when I purchased the computer, only 1 and 2 TB 5400 RPM HDDs. I replaced the HDD with a brand new SSD (identical size) and attempted to run HP recovery manager via bootable USB (media just created).  The recovery manager opened, but failed at the 50% level in the first step (formatting the hard drive).  It showed error “0xEFFFFF23”. I tried again, this time with secure boot disabled - same thing. I have also tried with a different SSD and got the same result. HP support had me run the hard disk diagnostics which just showed:- Smart check: not installed- Short DST: not installed The tech support agent claimed that the drive was defective, but I find it hard to believe that 2 different, new out of the box SSD's would both be defective.  I'm not that familiar with UEFI.  DId I do something wrong?  Do I need to convert the SSD to GPT before I run HP Recovery manager?  Do I need a new copy of the bootable recovery media? Thanks for the help.

Get a regular 2.5 inch SATA SSD. Very slightly slower than an mSSD but still way faster than anything else. Trying to configure the mSSD as boot drive is a huge hassle.

I'm installing SSD in MacBookPro 5,1 (late 2008).  It is suggested that a clean install be done, then use migrate to move applications and files. I am upgrading from OX 10.6.8 which came with my machine and I do not have a disc for a fresh install.  How do I get a Mountain Lion OS as a upgrade to do an install on the new hd?  I have a back up boot and system hard drive and it could be migrated to the new disk then upgraded, but I would like to start fresh.  Any suggestions either way?

  • Will the new 2012 iMac support 2 hard drives (HDD and SSD) like the 2011 iMac?

Will the new 2012 iMac support 2 hard drives (HDD and SSD) like the 2011 iMac?

Well, I'm not sure how anything can fit into a 5 mm depth, so I can see why they've removed the CD drive -  there probably wouldn't be enough room for the laser, LOL. Can't imagine speakers, hard drive (of any flavor), logic board and so on and so forth. Fortunately, my iMac has Applecare through early 2015 so I'm set for a while; I may check out a Mini at that point - saw that it is configurable with a fusion drive, which would make it interesting for me.

does new 2012 mac pro ssd need trim enabler

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If they need TRIM (I think that the flash storage included with the MacBook Pro does not need TRIM), Apple turns it on by default with the MacBook.
However, there are some people that doesn't recommend TRIM because it may hurt (rather than improve) performance > http://blog.macsales.com/11051-to-trim-or-not-to-trim-owc-has-the-answer

Client is a W7 64-bit machine.  It installs fine on my machine, so it's got to be a permission issue somewhere?

  • How do I install bootcamp on the new drive that I installed with the dvd drive adapter

Hello, I have a macbook pro mid 2012 13 inch, I have just earned some money, enough to buy a SSD, and I happily went to the store and bought a samsung evo 840 120gb SSD. My plan was to clean install windows 8.1 on the SSD, I already had bootcamp on the 500GB HDD with windows 8 that came with the mac, so I backed up the important files from the windows partition. I deleted the partition, and restored it to the mac's partition (which I was going to partition again after the windows installation is complete for the storage for my windows partition) I made a installation usb with the iso I have made with bootcamp assistant, and waited. After that was done I restarted my computer holding the option key, then I booted into the EFI boot partition, and went through the process, entered the serial key, and agreed the thing, and then  when I did the format it said it couldn't do it, so I took it out put it in an external hard-drive case, then I plugged it into my windows 8 laptop, then I opened command prompt, then I typed "diskpart", then after the administrator thing popped up, I clicked yes, then in the diskpart prompt, I typed in "list disk", and my SSD was disk 1, so I did "select disk 1" then I typed "clean" Then I went into the drive manager, then a thing popped up saying which one would I choose between MBR or GPT so I selected GPT, then made a new NTFS partition on the SSD, then took it out, then I popped it back in then went through the installation, until the actual installing part where after copying files is done, this pops up "Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code 0x8007045D" So I downloaded a torrent because I had thought that this was corrupted, and downloaded a torrent from a website, and downloaded the iso, and I tried and the same error, again and again of taking out the drive from my computer to format it and putting it back in again (since there was some files made on the SSD) so I had decided that I would download a windows 8 torrent, then I did then it couldn't even start, so I want to install windows 8.1 on my macbook pro, on a separate drive in the the DVD cage (not external, internal), would there be any way to do it, please help!
