New 2012 iMacs display input from external source

Do the new 2012 imacs support input from external DisplayPort sources?

2012 iMacs can't be used as a monitor for Macs with Mini DisplayPort, but you can use a 27-inch iMac with Mini DisplayPort as a monitor for 2012 iMacs. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4469

  • New 27" iMac MiniDisplayPort Input - I beleive we deserve a clarification

    Hey Apple,
    There has been a lot of confusion about how the new 27" iMac handles incoming video.
    We all assume that we can use the port to connect other MiniDisplayPort equipped apple computers and use the iMac as a monitor, that's a no-brainer.
    The question on everyone's mind is whether or not the port allows for connection from a hdmi source device such as an xbox/ps3 or bluray player via a passive adapter.
    This should be clarified by apple, we shouldn't have to buy it and try it out ourselves because apple failed to fully explain a new feature properly. As much as I want this new machine and will most likely purchase one regardless, I am not looking forward to being shocked in 2 months time to learn that the supposed forthcoming 'adapter' that the apple store clerks have been telling people about is going to be slapped with a >$300 price tag.
    At least to me; 'Adapter' implies passive, 'Converter' implies active.

    From what i've read DVI is a definite work with just a simple cable adapter, though unfortunately i haven't heard anything about HDMI or otherwise. Apple does say this in their manual for the 27 inch
    "Output port with support for DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI. The 27-inch model also supports input from external DisplayPort sources. Required cables and adapters are available separately."
    This manual can be found here. http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iMac_Late2009UG.pdf
    They are still quite vague on what that could mean though.
    You need to read that paragraph a little more carefully. The OUTPUT supports DVI, VGA or Dual Link DVI, not the input. It clearly states that the input supports 'external displayport sources'. That means at a minimum it SHOULD support mini displayport, displayport and HDMI with the correct cable. There are plenty of third party mini-display port to HDMI (or DisplayPort) cables available. The adapters that Apple sells for DVI and VGA are meant to use a Mini-display port video card to a VGA or DVI monitor not the other way around (this is the case for the 24" LED Cinema display). UNLESS they built-in the extra hardware to convert the signals into the iMac (doubtful) you would need a third party adapter to use any input other than HDMI or displayport, such as this one:

    Again, this is still speculation at this point, but based on the wording from the manual it is most likely accurate.

  • Has anyone seen the new 2012 iMac in any Apple stores yet?

    I was told by an Apple store employee that they would have the new 2012 iMac's in the Apple stores with-in a few days of their launch announcement, back in late October .... here it is late November and the new 2012 iMac's are not yet in the Apple store, for display purposes, here in Rochester, NY.
    Last night I was again at the Apple store here in Rochester, and asking about the new iMacs. one of the employees now says they "may be out in December" some time.
    I'm very disapponted as a loyal Mac user for over twenty years (and even as an Apple investor). that Apple is announcing the launch of these new products, and then taking months for these products to show up for sale.
    I'm starting to think that it won't be until late January that I can actually be able to purchase one of the new 2012 21.5" iMacs ..... i've been waiting years to get a new "antiglare" iMac.
    Has any one actually seen one of the new 21.5" 2012 iMacs in one of their local Apple stores, on display yet?

    UPDATE: Dec. 6, 2012
    I was just over at the local Apple store loking at the new 21.5" iMac, and to be honest, I wasn't all that impressed. I have been waiting for over a year to upgrade my Mac, and had high expectations for the new 2012 iMac's .... but seeing and playing with one in the store .... the new one's may not be for me.
    Most of all I wanted to believe all the talk about 75% less reflections in the new iMac display, but while in the Apple store, I saw no real difference over the previous model ... and if so, it was more like 25% less reflections. Nothing that dramatic, certainly not like the "anti-glare" screens available in the 2011 MacBook Pro. Basically, my understanding is that the new 2012 iMac's use the SAME DISPLAY as the previous iMac models did. It's the LG "LM215WF3" display, same as those in the 2009-2011 iMac displays. The only difference in the 2012 display, is that they took out the small space between the outer glass and the actual screen surface to get the overall display thinner. It still has the basic "glossy glass" cover screen.
    The other disappointment was the extremely poor audio sound from the new iMac's built-in speakers. They just sounded so "tinny", even when playing with multiple iTunes "equalizer" settings. Again, disappointing.
    Looks like I'll have to research the possibility of buying a Mini-Mac and an older Apple 20" cinema display off eBay. Or pick up a late model 2011 iMac and get the Rad-Tech "anti-glare" screen film for the display (Ugh!).
    Being a graphic designer and art director in profession, I just can't understand why Apple has abandoned the "professional" market for these glossy displays in it's iMac line .... or at least STILL hasn't given us an option for a true "anti-glare" display.
    Is it just me, or are my observations on the new 2012 iMac being seen the same by others as well?

  • How to merge key field from external source system with SAP R/3 master

    Hi,
    In SAP BW 7.0 system, our scenario is Master Data for 0GL_ACCOUNT is coming from SAP R/3 alongwith the Transactional data records for standard FI cubes. Then, one more set of transaction data is coming from external source system, a flat file, into another custom DSO(ZDSO_FI), which also has this GL Account field.
    This flat file's GL account, GL_file, has to be basically mapped/merged with the standard 0GL_ACCOUNT field so that at the time of loading the transactional data for custom DSO, ZDSO_FI (with transformation mapping GL_file > 0GL_ACCOUNT), system automatically refers to the 0GL_ACCOUNT master data to load these incoming transactional values, from the external flat file system. How can this be done?
    To illustrate the scenario, say I have 5 records in 0GL_ACCOUNT, loaded from SAP R/3 into SAP BW-
    0GL_ACCOUNT      Short Description     Source System
    100                                   D1                          R/3
    200                                   D2                          R/3
    300                                   D3                          R/3
    400                                   D4                          R/3
    500                                   D5                          R/3
    Now suppose if my flat file has following sample transactional data, to be uploaded in SAP BW  ZDSO_FI-
    GL_file      Key Figure1
    400          789
    200          567
    Then after uploading this transactional data in ZDSO_FI (with transformation mapping GL_file > 0GL_ACCOUNT), the 0GL_ACCOUNT data becomes as below-
    0GL_ACCOUNT      Short Description     Source System
    400
    200
    100                                   D1                          R/3
    200                                   D2                          R/3
    300                                   D3                          R/3
    400                                   D4                          R/3
    500                                   D5                          R/3
    So note that the system did not refer the incoming GL's from flat file, although the field is mapped to 0GL_ACCOUNT in transformation, to the already available master data. Rather created 2 new data rows for the GL accounts coming from external system. Because of this I am not able to perform the calculations common from standard FI cube and ZDSO_FI, with GL account as key field. I need to synchronise these data values based on GL Account to proceed with further calculation and am badly stuck.
    Request if anyone can please throw some light on how to achieve this seemingly simple requirement?
    Thanks in advance.

  • I can't paste text from external sources into Photoshop CC 2014.

    Hello everyone,
    Since a few days I'm not able to paste texts from external sources into Photoshop CC 2014.
    I never have problems with Photoshop CC before.
    I have the new iOS Yosemite installed in my macbook.
    It's really frustrating, can someone help please?

    I have basically the same setup, except on a Mac Mini. I am unable to reproduce your problem. Double check that you are copying the original text in the first place, and then make sure you are pasting into a text layer as you cannot paste into a regular Photoshop layer -- nothing will happen. Create a text layer by clicking on a regular layer with the text tool, the T in the tool box. The new layer will show up in the layers panel identified by the first line of the text.

    **I've installed Windows 7 through bootcamp on the new 2012 iMac now I have no network drivers or graphics drivers to run aero! Help! **

    I have been through it again and at the end it came up with the error:

  • Will the new 2012 iMac support 2 hard drives (HDD and SSD) like the 2011 iMac?

    Will the new 2012 iMac support 2 hard drives (HDD and SSD) like the 2011 iMac?

    Well, I'm not sure how anything can fit into a 5 mm depth, so I can see why they've removed the CD drive -  there probably wouldn't be enough room for the laser, LOL. Can't imagine speakers, hard drive (of any flavor), logic board and so on and so forth. Fortunately, my iMac has Applecare through early 2015 so I'm set for a while; I may check out a Mini at that point - saw that it is configurable with a fusion drive, which would make it interesting for me.

  • New 27" iMac display allows input - without booting up??

    The new iMac sounds very tempting as a non Mac user.
    Just had one question. (Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.)
    Can I use it purely as a display without the iMac booting up??
    eg If I also purchase a Mac Mini at a later date can this be used for display?
    This may serve future proof my purchase.
    The following suggests yes:
    "Mini DisplayPort.
    The Mini DisplayPort lets you connect an external display, including the Apple LED Cinema Display, to your iMac. On the 27-inch iMac, the same port offers input, too. So you can connect any external source that has DisplayPort output — including a MacBook or MacBook Pro — and use your iMac as a display."
    But if someone can confirm that will increase my confidence here
    Thanks

    Welcome!
    The new models were announced only this week and may not be shipping yet. As everybody here are end users, I doubt anyone can confirm until they start arriving.
    You would do better to watch the Intel Mac forum for user reports of the new models. The one you're now in is for the oldest iMacs with CRT monitors. Intel iMac forums are here:

  • Can I use the memory from my 2007 iMac in a new 2012 iMac?

    Finally putting down my 2007 iMac and buying a 27" new iMac and I'm wondering what is worth salvaging from my old computer. I'm pretty certain that it has either a fan or thermal compound issue (it runs super hot) but I what about the RAM. Is it possible to use it in the new or should I just recycle the whole machine?

    The old RAM won't be compatible with the new generation iMac, but you may be able to sell it privately quite easily.

  • Recording from external source

    I am brand new to Mac / switched from pc a week ago. not able to figure out some things yet and havent found answers in support. mostly on the basic stuff. like I was able to record audio from a lp turntable on a pc. it looks like there is no recording program built in to the iMac, or am I wrong? will I have to purchase some type of software to record from external record or tape source?

    Sorry some heavy-handed moderation has been going on here. I accidently duplicated my post when I edited it to say 'Welcome to Apple Discussions'. Then I asked the mods to remove the first post above and they've gone and deleted my second post and yours; I am sorry about that.
    You posed a question about Real Instruments in the absent post. A Real Instrument can be a microphone input or any device that connects to the Audio-In port (or a USB/Firewire Audio device).
    Hope that helps.

  • I cannot boot my 2012 Macbook Air 13" from external USB 2.0/3.0 drive.

    I just purchased a new 2012 MacBook Air 13" with 8GB ram and 256Gb SSD. I have clones of my 2011 MBA drive made with Superduper on both a USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 external drives. The USB 2.0 drive enclosure contains the OWC Aura 256GB 6G SSD that used to be the internal drive for my 2011 MBA.
    I cannot boot my new 2012 MBA from either external drive. When I try to do so, the MBA displays shows a gray circle with a line through it.
    I can boot my MacBook Pro 2010 and 2007 Mac Pro just fine with either USB external drive. So, it must be something up with compatibility with the new 2012 MBA. All of my Macs are running 10.7.4 with all of the latest upgrades available as of 6/24/12.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.
    Bud James

    I have a drive I had been using in a 2007 MacBook that I would like to "upgrade" to a compatible version of 10.7.4 (build 11E2705), but I am having trouble finding a way to get the version of the OS on the drive without affecting the data on the drive.
    I had hoped that booting from the Recovery partion on the SSD would allow me to "Reinstall 10.7" to get a compatible version, but the drive still can not boot the 2012 MacBook Air.
    I may try cloning next, moving directories I want to keep to the root level of the target drive, but I wish there was an easier way to "refresh" the install of the OS to a newer version for new hardware.
    I also need to find a way to "refresh" the USB drive I have for installing 10.7, to make sure it has the ability to boot new hardware, since the original 10.7.4 USB install clone does not boot the newest laptops.

  • Displaying input from Runtime.exec()

    Hi there, after all my troubles, I'm finaly able to get all the input from the unix machine using Runtime.exec() and to have it come out pretty quick. My new problem now is that I need to take that input and display it onto a textPane. Anyone who can help me do that? here is the code I have written, along with the method I use called setPaneText():
    class StreamGobbler extends Thread
    InputStream is;
    String type;
    StreamGobbler(InputStream is, String type)
    this.is = is;
    this.type = type;

    InputStreamReader isr = new InputStreamReader(is);
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(isr);
    String line=null;
    while ( (line = br.readLine()) != null)
    System.out.println(type + ">" + line);
    } catch (Exception ioe)
    ioe.printStackTrace();
    private void jMenuItem13ActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {

    serverComm = "";
    serverComm = pp.getServerComm();
    if(source == jMenuItem13)
    try
    String osName = System.getProperty("os.name");
    Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
    Process commandReturn = rt.exec(serverComm + " /usr/local/bin/dlgexec pd_rm_cm trashcan");
    //StreamGobbler errorGobbler = new
    //StreamGobbler(commandReturn.getErrorStream(), "ERROR");
    StreamGobbler outputGobbler = new
    StreamGobbler(commandReturn.getInputStream(), "OUTPUT");
    //errorGobbler.start();
    outputGobbler.start();
    int exitVal = commandReturn.waitFor();
    System.out.println("exitVal = " + exitVal);
    if(exitVal == 0)
    System.out.println("inside the trashcan if");
    int cnt = 0;
    String outText []= new String [10000];
    BufferedReader buffy = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(outputGobbler.is));
    while((outText[cnt]=buffy.readLine()) != null)
    cnt++;
    if(cnt == 9000)
    break;
    TextAreaPanel tp;
    tp = new TextAreaPanel();
    for(int cnt2 = 0; cnt2 < cnt; cnt2++)
    String temp;
    temp = outText[cnt2] + "\n";
    tp.setPaneText(temp);

    public void setPaneText(String message)
    jTextArea1.setEnabled(true);
    //jTextArea1.setEditable(false);
    String outText = message;
    jTextArea1.setText(message);

  • Imac display input suggestion

    It would be nice to see some input's on the imac display.
    I would like to hook my game consoles into the display and play them if I wanted. Even if it was an option at purchase time I think it would be great.
    Right now I have to decide ..new tv? or new imac.... Yes it would be splendid if I was able to afford both but the reality is that I can't afford both.
    How many other people would find this a useful option?

    Yes, I'd like such an option. In particular, I'd like a DVI input so that I could use the iMac display as a monitor for another computer.
    I used to have my iMac at the office, and my G5 with a Dell 2405 at home, but I decided I'd rather have the bigger screen at work, so swapped the two systems. That worked great--until the first time I remembered that I have a Windows PC under my desk for gaming at home. The Dell has multiple inputs, so it was no problem, but with the iMac at home, if I want to game on the Windows box, I've got to go borrow the monitor from my server in the other room. Ugh!
