New 2013 Air or Current Pro W/Retina

I am facing a terribly difficult decision. I am replacing a mid 2012 base model Pro without retina and 500gb disc drive. I was having pretty severe typing lag and if I ever accidently clicked on iPhoto or iMovie I would have to stare at the bouncing beach ball for a good 25-30 seconds before I could do anything else. A good friend of mine is a huge Air fan and he says that is because of my Pro having a traditional hard drive and if it had an SSD it wouldn't do that. So I have regretted my choice of the Pro over the Air for the past 10 months.
So 3 days ago I drove 6 hours in the car to the closest Best Buy and picked up a brand new 256gb 2013 Air. I still have not broken the seal.... the sales person made one comment to me that is eating at the back of my mind for days now. I was looking at the price and specs of the Macbook Pro with retina display 8gb ram, 128gb SSD. It was on sale right now for $1399 so it would have been $175 more than the 256gb Air model I was purchasing. I said ehhhhh its almost $200 dollars more and I am already way over budget and he says "Yes, but its 2x the machine the Air is and you would get the retina display."....
In the end I chose the Air mainly because of the Haswell improvements (mostly graphical imporovements because the battery life isn't really a concern to me) and mostly because with the Air I am getting 2x the SSD storage (256gb Air versus only 128gb on the Pro) and the new Air has the PCI based SDD which is supposed to be up to 45% faster than the SATA SDD that I am assuming the Pro uses?
SO my big question is did I make a big mistake? I mostly went with the Air for the PCI SSD so I don't have to stare at that bouncing ball every time I do anything and it seems like the Haswell Intel 5000 graphics should far outperform the Pro's Intel 4000. Retina display would be nice but not really a requirement. I didn't really have time to even look at the retina display model and to be honest the screen resolution on my base model Pro never bothered me at all and in the couple mintutes I was in the store I didn't see a huge difference between the two (although they were not side by side). Also I was thinking having to push that retina display for everything you do would actually be more taxing on the performance?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am a casual user, mostly just web, email, listen to music, youtube videos and about 2x a year I like to iMovie together videos of my kids. Never leaves the kitchen table so portability and battery life is of no real concern although the Air is unbeliveably sexy IMO. Also I have never tried it before but I would very much like to be able to run Parralels occasionally to be able to run a few Windows programs I still rely on and I am tied of borrowing my daughter PC for that. Is parralels going to be better or worse on either machine?
Thanks for reading!

Having similar dillema, decided for Air. The main reason - I dont think that the old Intel graphics has enough power for retina, 2nd I like the 1440 res on 13´,  1280 is too little, anything more is too much (for me). Retina was tempting because of HDMI and 2 Thunderbolts not the display
Air was nice surprise, I "downgraded" from i7 quad that i hated because of weight and size, do not miss any speed, only video renderings take longer but not much otherwise it feels even faster and at half the weight.
2013 MBA is amazing machine.

  • Can the new Macbook Air and Macbook Pro with retina display that run OS X Lion or Mountain Lion run Windows through bootcamp?

I was just wondering.. since the new macs have omitted the optical disk drives is it still possible to install windows on a mac running OSX Lion and Mountain Lion?

Yes. Read the Boot Camp Install instructions for the MacBook Air which also does not have an optical drive. Put Windows onto a thumb drive or external optical drive and make these bootable. Then follow the instructions for installation from the thumb drive or external optical drive.

I will use it for Photoshop, in design etc.
Is the old Macbook pro still better than the new retina, ore.

The MacBook pro 2.9 is also now a lot cheaper than the retina 2.6 and looks a lot faster and a better buy 2 me..?
I am absolutely not pro so i cant really know if i am right ore wrong..?
Which has the best performance and which has the slowest hard drive..?
I like to have a fast and small comp. which can be used for adobe photo, film edd. etc. without any problems. I will use an extern storage. And i have an extern screen.
I am so afraid that if i buy retina ore the other way around, that i have done a mistake..?

  • Can I change a new battery for my MacBook Pro 15' Retina? How?

Can I change a new battery for my MacBook Pro 15' Retina? How?

    Hi!
About a month ago, my MBPr 15", mid 2012 (Model Identifier10,1) showed, at first, Battery Service warning and on the next day X over the battery icon with Battery Not Available message in the status. MBP would run only and while the charger was plugged in, plug led would be always green, when connected. Battery test third party sw would not detect the battery, any longer.
Replacing upper case with battery/keyboard/trackpad, as per Apple,  in my country was too expensive, over 1000 USD, did't make any sense to me, so I've chosen DIY option (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLhHSIej9fs) with all necessary precautions like tools, ESD protection grounded pad in place and ordered "new" replacement battery from Hong Kong on Ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/400699766989?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STR K%3AMEBIDX%3AIT).
Yesterday I came in new packing/sealed, I installed it, plugged the power cable on, plug led would turn green and then orange, I thought it's ok, but once system booted, I saw again X over battery icon and "Battery Not Available". I checked all the hints on internet, tried several times SMC and EPRON resets, no success. I filed complaint to Ebay supplier, he replied that battery undergone test prior the shipment, but ready for return and refund.
So, I can make another try and buy the battery from Ebay but what if the problem is with my logic board? From one hand charger plug led lights orange when connected to MBP, on another hand System doesn't see the battery at all: No battery in the System info/Hardware/Power. it works absolutely fine when plugged-in to charger. I ran extended AHT (over pressed "D" key while powering on) twice with No Problem in return. So, my question is does it ultimately mean that Logic Board and power circuits are all fine and the whole thing is about "new bad" battery? I there any way to entirely test Logic board and narrow down problem origin?
Thank you for attention in advance,
    Nurlan

  • New MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros supporting Snow Leopard?

Do the new MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros support the Snow Leopard OS? I have been trying to install 10.6 but the screen is blacking out after install for the Air and I cannot even boot into an external drive for the Pro. Any suggestions or help?

    Kada,
A Mac's Firmware is designed to reject the installation of a Mac operating system that predates the version and build the unit originally shipped with. There is a good reason for it, as earlier versions would unlikely be in anyway compatible with the hardware. An OS that predates the hardware would not have the requisite drivers for the built-in peripherals, such as the graphics subsystem and ports. The safetey measure prevents Apple from having to deal with the potential nightmare of users having problems they are not prepared to alleviate.
You may be able to physically create a working situation by running an earlier build using a VM layer, such as using Parallels or Fusion, but Snow Leopard's single user licensing doesn't lawfully permit it. Snow Leopard's Server edition does however. Then again, it still wouldn't solve your scenario, as you would be running Lion or Mountain Lion to support the VM.

  • Macbook Air vs Macbook Pro w/Retina after config

    Hello,
I'm interested in a laptop for basic needs: email, surfing the web, music, word processing, quick load time for programs, multiple windows open at once.  Taking into consideration that configuration options can be the same for both (below is what I interested in getting), would it be better to go with the Macbook Air vs the Macbook Pro w/Retina since it has better battery life?  I'd like this laptop to last for 2-3 years before I would get a new one.  The prices were pretty close so I would need another deciding factor.  Is the screen resolution enough of a difference to go with the retina?  Thank you!
    Macbook air 1-7, 8gb, 512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage
    Macbook pro w/retina display, 1-7, 8gb, 512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage
    Best,
    Lindsay

The basic requirements that you listed will be well within the capabilities of both machines.  The AIR has dramatically superior battery run time and is slightly easier to transport.  The retina has a superior display.  Go to an Apple store and look at both.  That is the best way to decide.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Air or MacBook Pro NON-Retina display ????

I am trying to replace my old Power Mac (2004 - PPC ) with original Wide screen and get a new MacBook. I am worried about the small storage space on the MacBook Air I like the speed and feel and look, nice size and weight. (11.6"). I own a external hard drive (1TB), But I dont want to have to plug into the EXT HD everytime I need to get music or pictures being the MacBook Air only has 60Gb SSD. Can anyone give me any input why I should get the MacBook Air?? Or Should I just go get the MacBook Pro and live happy.

well I added this list to this post of what I need this MacBook for but it didn't save. so I will type it all again.
    - Replacing PowerMac PPC (1 TB INT HD)

    - want something to last a long time durable
    - would you recommend purchasing the Extended warranty???
    - mostly used at home, but would like to bring it along when traveling

  • Macbook air or Macbook pro with retina?

I am a college student but do not know which macbook to get. I would be using it for typical things like writing papers and watching netflix or youtube etc. I know the air would be good to have for portability and battery life but I think id be missing out on the hd quality of the retina, Is there a big difference in quality?

Go to an Apple store and look at both.  Only then can you make a decision based on you personal criteria rather than that of others.
The MBA is a practical machine for a college student but you may fall in love with the retina display, which is all right.
    Ciao.

  • GPU restart question on a 2013 13 inch Macbook Pro w/Retina Display

Hi, I was just searching online and there was no freezing or anything,  but then I see a little alert saying something about the graphics needing to be restarted and if I should send an error report.  I searched the reports the diagnostic reports and saw this
    11/30/14 7:23:56.061 PM DumpGPURestart[1116]: com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.crashreporter.writereport.gpuRestart
    com.apple.message.signature: Kernel
    com.apple.message.signature2: UNBUNDLED ||| kernel ((null))
    com.apple.message.signature3: UNKNOWN
    com.apple.message.result: noop
    com.apple.message.summarize: YES
I was just curious as to what is this all about.  Is my GPU going bad?
The only thing graphic wise that I noticed that since upgrading to Yosemite,  when I restart the Macbook or power it on, when my Wacom Cintiq is connected to it, there's some flickering on the screen after I log in.  Its something I don't notice when I power up my Mac Mini with the Cintiq attached.

yyou may be right. I ran a diagnostic, there was no issues. I was looking online, and tthere seems to be issues with Retina Display MacBooks with discrete gpus in Yosemite, as it switches between graphics. Which would make sense with mine, since any issue I had happened since the switch.

  • Buying my first Mac, Air or Pro with retina?

I am buying my first Mac. Undecided between new Mac Air or Mac Pro with retina? Any help?

Well if your computer needs are light weight and how light the computer is important for you then get the MBA
If on the other hand your needs are more heavy weight and the weight of the computer doesn't matter then get the MBA

  • Photoshop CC and Illustrator CC crash on my MacBook Pro 15" Retina (2013)

I have a Mac Pro 12-Core (Late 2013) and a MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013). While there is no problem with the Adobe Creative Cloud products on the Mac Pro, I can't work with Photoshop and Illustrator on the MacBook Pro, cause it always tells me "undefined error" or that I wouldn't have the write-rights for the hard drive or file, even when there's no file opened. Illustrator crashes constantly while starting the program.
I tried to do a new installation by de-installing the programs including cloud desktop program with the Adobe de-installers. Didn't help at all. I tried to delete the programs including all hidden files manually, but it didn't work. After the new installation of the programs I still get the same error information. What else can I do? Other Non-Adobe programs like Final Cut, QuarkXpress aso work without problems and I really don't want to do a new setup on my Mac just because of the Adobe problem.
So, who can help me? What can I do to solve the problem?

  • I have only loaded phone contacts in my new iPhone 5 and my email contacts only on my Macbook Pro with retina display contacts how can I keep them from changing my iPhone to email contacts only when I connect to iTunes please

Since purchasing a new iPhone 5 and macbook pro with retina display I have decided to keep the iPhone 5 for phone contacts only, and the macbook for email contacts only .. Is there a way for me to keep these as they are recorded on each apple product when I sync with iTunes as it has changed my iPhone and put in email contacts and thus deleted iPhone phone contacts once when I syncd thanks appreciate any help

To prevent your iPhone from automatically syncing when you plug it in, click on iTunes in the menu bar, then preferences, then "devices", then tick "prevent iPhones, iPad's and iPod's from syncing automatically".
Plug it in, then on the iPhone sync summary screen, click "info" along the top.
Make sure the "sync contacts" option is not ticked. as long as it's not ticked, then it won't sync with your mac's contacts but will still include them in backups.
Also, if you use iCloud, make sure that the iPhone/mac are either not signed into the same account, or that "contacts" is not turned on for both of them

  • MacBook Pro with Retina Display Case?

I recently purchased the new mid-2014 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display, and I wanted to buy a protective case in case of bumps, scratches, marks, etc. I bought the Tech21 Impact Snap Case, and I'm pretty sure it's making my computer overheat, as the keyboard and unibody feel much more warm to the touch when the case is on. Has anyone else experienced this problem with this particular case? Does anyone have recommendations for cases that protect the MacBook Pro but don't interfere with ventilation/cause it to overheat? Thanks so much!

Have you checked the Speck smart-shell cases . But regarding the increasing heat they will not help as well. I know that MacBooks are designed as aluminum in order to give the heat out of the body, but the cases prevent it to some degree. They work as an insulating agent rather to help the heat get out. I would recommend to use a good carrying bag to protect your new device while travelling. Not much will happen while it is at your desk when you are using.
