New 2014 Mac Pro Just Dies
For no reason, my brand new Mac Pro will shut itself off during any session. To complete this summary here, it shut down also! Weird. It also mysteriously shuts down after it goes into sleep mode. Any suggestions before I call Apple Tech support ?
After you reboot, open the Console app and look for log entries at the time of the shutdown and post them here.
Does it happen when you disconnect all peripheries except for mouse, KB and monitor.

The ability of the new 2014 Mac Pro to run older legacy OSX versions?
Being a video editor, I will probably be in the market to buy the new Mac Pro when it's released into the marketplace (which should be very soon).
So my question is...I usually retain several different startup drives, with different versions of OSX and different versions of editing software. Let's say I have the new Mac Pro, the 2014 edition, but rather than edit a new project in Mavericks and FCPX...I find that I need to go back to a legacy version of OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard and FCP 7. And I have that on a bootable external drive. And the key question is...would anyone know if I could boot up on that using the new Mac Pro hardware?
My current Mac Pro is an older one, 1.1, and I have no difficulty in restarting and booting up from legacy drives containing older versions of the OSX. I'm hoping the same may be true of the new one.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated...thanks, Johnyour 1,1 as a backup, test system, safety net would be excellent. And if you have not already, some are very happy with cheap 53xx upgrades to 8-core and some other touches to keep it running smoothly.
I wish there was a bootable PCIe 6G card, not for booting but better support for PCIe 1.x SSD controllers.
I feel like I am hitting some bandwidth walls lately - seems odd but my i7 2.66 920 PC running 7 or 8.1 feels smoother and better in comparison to Lion 10.7.5 Lion use to feel perfectly fine, but background tasks, especially TimeMachine and CCC can seemingly bring it to its knees - slow web page loading for one thing.
If you can afford to keep the 1,1 and make some improvements to it, do so though. It's latest 7 yrs and may have a couple more years of life left in it. -

Dual boot OS X 10.10 plus OS X 10.6.8 on new 2014 Mac Mini?

I am currently thinking about buying a 2014 Mac Mini. As I still need to use some very expensive (albeit old) software, I would like to run a copy of OS X 10.6.8 (strapped for cash).
I currently own a 2011 MacBook Pro 17" and I have partitioned the disk and run OS X 10.9.5 on 700GB and OS X 10.6.8 on 50GB. This has worked great for the past 2 years. I simply press ‘alt’ on booting and select my OS depending on which software I need to run.
My question is, can I do the same with a new 2014 Mac Mini using one of my Time Machine back-ups (install from Time Machine option on istall)?
I would be very grateful to anyone who can offer me some advice.

Just to make it clearer, 'ordinary' 10.6.8 is not allowed due to Apple's license terms to be run in a virtual machine only the 'server' version is. The server version of 10.6.8 can run normal applications and you do not have to use the server bits itself. If you try installing the 'ordinary' 10.6.8 in to a virtual machine it will not work as they check for this.
The new 2014 Mac mini will not run 10.9.5 either, the 'oldest' version the 2014 model will run is 10.10, it will of course also run 10.10.1.
1) Older Macs are just that: older and out of warranty. So of course the user is subject to the risk of hardware failure without necessarily much warning and little or no recourse (other than purchasing another older Mac) when the hardware does fail. This may also be a different problem for the OP, as cost appears to be a major consideration here.
2) The use of Snow Leopard Server in Parallels will cost about $99 retail (less, if some shopping for "discounts" on Parallels is done on the internet).

3) It was a common myth that the Snow Leopard EULA prohibited its virtualization in Lion and thereafter on a Mac. That myth has been debunked in the 3-1/2 years since Lion was first released and repeating it now does not make anything "clearer" but only tends to confuse an OP.
In any event whatever remains of that long forgotten debate is now mostly moot since Apple reduced the sales price of Snow Leopard Server by 95% (by telephone orders only; 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A); that is, for the same $20 as it sells Snow Leopard client and it is much easier to install, use and maintain Snow Leopard Server in virtualization, including Parallels. -
I am new to Mac Pro and am purchasing one online tonight. Can anyone tell me how to get my information - Itunes, photos, and videos transferred onto the Mac from my Toshiba. the state I live in doesn't have an Apple store but I could take it to Minneapolis when I go. Any ideas where to begin?
You might profit from a visit to a Minneapolis Apple store. With a brand new Mac, I think they will be most helpful - not just with transferring files, but with other advice as well. And I strongly recommend you invest in a back up drive. The Apple folk can help with that as well.

Trying to load pre-2006 lso files into Logic 8 on my new intel Mac Pro
I'm trying to load pre-2006 lso files into Logic 8 on my new intel Mac Pro, but they crash the app every time. files saved 2006 and later load OK. Anybody shed any light on this or know of a fix (other than the laborious work-around of re-saving all early lso's in logic 8 on the PPC and physically moving them via a portable drive to the new machine)?
(BTW, those files also crash the Logic 7 installed on the intel Mac.)Upon further work with my migration, I find I was incorrect in the time frame assertion of these failed files: apparently, the creation/modification dates have nothing to do with it and the reality is that some files fail at random, while others load just fine. right now it looks to be about 50/50 Beats me why this is.
Anyway, for those interested, I've discovered a very helpful key to the quick processing of file data for a plethora of files (i. e. re-saving the "bad" lso files as Logic 8 projects on the older CPU and moving them over to my new machine), and that is the 'control key/launch' of the app. I hadn't realized that Apple had added this feature to Logic to enable easier work on multiple song files when one does not require the audio.
For those who don't know about it, the 'control key/launch' provides an option to disable the core audio at app start-up, thus allowing files to load instantly without loading the plug-in library files associated with tracks - great for copying MIDI data between song files, or in this case, re-saving a batch.
Still puzzled, though, as to why so many older lso files crash Logic when they attempt to load on my new CPU. -
How do I back up my iphone5 to my ICloud account, whqen iI have forgot my restrictions password. My restrictions pass code has my icloud a account greyed out? Can i backup to a wd external harddrive, or try to backup to a new mini-mac, I just purchased yesterday? This is my first iMac and IPhone5, so i am kinda out on my own, and can use some pointers!! My phone is full of pictures, and will not download anything, until i store my pictures somewhere!!
If you don't remember your restrictions passcode, you will have to force the phone into recovery mode and restore it using iTunes. Do NOT restore your backup. The restrictions passcode is part of the backup.
Everything on the phone will be lost.
You can extract the photos from the camera roll the same way you would from any other digital camera. Having a restriction passcode set should not prevent that. do that before you put the phone in recovery mode and restore it. -

Mine happens very often sometimes, and it can be very embarrassing, especially just when you think you are almost done with what you are doing, only for you start all over again. I'm new to mac. Just started out. Have OS 10.8.3. I have an HP 1315 printer. It prints and copies, wont scan. I see old threads on this, nothing recent. ?can i make this work, or do i need a new printer??

You can try using Screen Sharing in the Sharing preferences. Or try a third-party utility such as ScreenRecycler.

If they need TRIM (I think that the flash storage included with the MacBook Pro does not need TRIM), Apple turns it on by default with the MacBook.

Copying iTunes from windows 7 pro to new 2013 Mac Pro
Have all my work on my iPhone 5s. Do nothing but manually syncing on lates iTunes. What to copy iTunes to new Mac Pro so I can use my iPhone on either computer.
Laptop at work and desktop at home.
All store bought music on C drive in iTunes as it should be along with books etc. but about 8 gbs of my ripped music some mp3 some ACC all at 320 is on my internal drive.
First thought is change iTunes setting to CONSOLIDATE hoping D drive music will go into iTunes properly.
While I searched KB I came up flat. I like a clean organized computer. While I know windows vert well I am new to Mac pros (but not iPhones nor iOS 7)..
Any way I can do this cleanly. I can put a full backup of iTunes onto a USB hard drive I use for 3rd back up off pictures and iTunes

I had thought about that but I want a cleaner easier way of doing it as I start to setup my MacBook Pro I have run into a few things and don't like the D drive idea. I did format a 1 TB drive last nite giving 700gb to Time Capsule and 300gb to data. Used Guid format than journaled for TC and fat for data with disk utility.
There has to be a way I can mirror libraries on computers for iPhone 5s. Heck I see icloud took care of contacts, etc. and iTunes saw all my bought music in cloud and downloaded it to macbook. I consolidated my original library so now all us together. There must be way to copy iTunes from windows and use it to replace folders on Maverick latest so my iPhone 5s is seen the same on windows 7 Pugent system and apple MacBook Pro. I called Apple but got a genius on the phone that had to keep asking for help herself and referencing the KBarticle that gives a few options none of which are clean.

2014 New Black Mac Pro Crashing
This is totally frustrating.
I have a new Mac Pro 2014, preconfigured in Apple Store with 64 GB RAM, 1 TB Flash, AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB graphics with 2 monitors (2560x1440) connected by thunderbolt.
After I installed all my applications, for example, Adobe CS6, the machine starts crashing randomly. It can be one hour or it can be 15 mins after restart.
I can be using Safari, or printing a Word document or just installing a new application and the screens will go black and then, chime and the machine restarts and back to the login screen.
I have called Apple Support 3 times and still the situation remains.
So far, I have
* Installed the Apple Update that addressed an SMC issue
* Updated to 10.9.2
* Disabled all Power Saving features
* Reset the SMC
Now I am running in safe mode for the last 15 mins and monitoring the situation.
Will a product specialise from Apple comment and advise?

Can I just plop my old PPC G5 system drive (OS 10.5.8) into my newer 2008 Mac Pro?
....and expect it to function much as an alternate dual boot system drive?
10.7 on a new drive in the Mac Pro will become my primary OS..No it was installed for PowerPC, not Intel. It has APT instead of GUID, and depending on new or used a Mac Pro today will not run less than 10.6.5.
Sometimes even the presence of the old OS boot drive can introduce boot issues - off load what files you need and reformat the drive as soon as possible. Some even have used a FW case first until it is formatted. -
I Bought a new 2014 laptop and new to install my old cs2 program On it. I've only downloaded in on a desktop before but that one had a cd drive. The new computers don't. Is there anyway to work around this?
