New 24" Apple Led Displays FAQs

Ok, I've been waiting for this monitor to come out since it was introduced at the special even a month ago. Now, I think there are as many questions now that it is finally shipping as they were before it shipped.
Does it really only work with the latest Mac laptops? Could Apple really be that naive? Come one, I want an answer from someone from Apple. Will I or will I not be able to connect this new display to my PowerMac G5? If I won't, are you going to come up with a display that can actually connect to my G5? Are you expecting all of us to buy a laptop? Remember, pros will never buy a laptop over a desktop, they just aren't powerful enough.
If I will be able to connect it, then how will that happen? Are you already selling an adapter that I just couldn't find on the online store?
Answers needed, please, enough questions.
Thanks,
G

Because Apple has a relatively small volume compared to the Windows world, they have to plan farther ahead to amortize their R&D and tooling costs. Apple has always designed its products with the standard that's going to be common a couple years from now, not now. This is why the iPod touch and MacBook Air seemed underpowered when introduced. Apple knew that it would be a short amount of time before the storage would catch up and Apple would not have to retool.
Apple is not expecting all of us to buy a laptop. They are expecting us to hold out for the adapters and the newer Macs introduced over the next few years that will probably all go DisplayPort.

Sorry, but this time you're the one being naive. A laptop with 4GB RAM and a dual-core processor is more powerful than many recent desktops. I own a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro, yet much of my work still happens on the MacBook Pro because it is powerful enough for tasks that would actually take longer on a G5 tower, for instance.
Given the power of today's portables, there has never been a time in history where it is more practical to use a laptop as one's only business computer.

  • Macbook goes to sleep randomely when connected to Apple LED Display

I have  an issue with my Macbook Pro (2009 model) when it's connected to my 27' Apple LED Display. For no apparent reason that I can tell, it just goes to sleep at random, and after I wake it up by pressing a key (bluetooth keyboard), the mouse cursor looks messed up:
It might be a bit hard to tell from the blurry photo (I don't know of a way to take a screenshot with the cursor, so I used my iPhone), but it's too halves of the spinning beachball.
There's nothing in the console's log that indicates the reason for switching to sleep mode. It's also not the magnets of the Macbook pro used to detected when the lid is closed (I'm using the NoSleep utility that prevents that behavior). I've already tried resetting the PRAM. Also, this behavior never happens when the macbook isn't connected to the external display, so that probably aint a heating problem either (also the temperature readings are all in bounds).
Any help would be very appreciated, as that thing is driving me crazy.

    Jon,
Along the lines of my comment in your other thread. The battery connection cable between the logic board and the battery is also known as the "sleep/switch" connector. This little cable not only communicates battery power to & from the machine but also has a handle on regulating the machine's sleep process (and wake from sleep).
I've seen several MacBooks that have come across my work bench which are suffering from this exact issue you're describing and we're remedied by replacing that cable.
The component I'm referring to is this one-

Click here for one. The link is to a PDF. Aside from a converter such as this, a graphics card with a Mini DisplayPort is needed.

  • Dual Apple LED  Display (24") with NVIDIA GeForce GT120 & ATI RadeonHD4870

I have recently purchased a MacPro4,1 Processor Name:Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz with 6GB memory with the NVIDIA GeForce GT120. Then I purchased a ATI Radeon HD 4870 to be able to run the 2 Apple Cinema displays and an external monitor.
I installed the ATI in slot 1 and the GT120 in slot 3. I use different motion software and the computer seems to recognize as the primary card the GT120 and not the ATI. This creates a problem with the different software I use as it uses for processing and rendering the GT120 and not the ATI faster card.
This is also visible when I go to system preferences and change the display preferences and try to shift them around, the first display is the one that has the GT120 card (which is in slot 3)!!!
Also sometimes I get funny characters in some windows.
I spent the extra dollars to get an ATI card but I am not using its capabilities which is inviting me to disconnect the GT120 card... but then I cannot use the second Apple LED display due to its Apple's miserable connector policy. This is telling me that next time I should not buy the monitors from Apple as its connectors are not trully compatible with the hardware they sell.
I searched everywhere but cannot find similar cases which is very strange. Any solution friends?

You could remove the NVIDIA GT120 and connect the second display to the ATI card's DVI port with a DVI to Mini DisplayPort converter.

  • Best stand for MacBook Pro and Apple LED Display

I am buying a MacBook Pro and Apple LED Display tomorrow. I want to have a two display setup, similar to what I have seen in the Apple Store. I believe they used a Griffin Elevator. I want to make sure of two things: that the stand is sturdy enough so that my laptop won't slide off of it and that I can adjust the stand/monitor so that the tops are level (so that moving my mouse from the laptop to monitor and back is smooth - i.e. the cursor doesn't jump up or down.
I like the fact that I can use this setup to go mobile very quickly, but what about my direct Ethernet connection. I wish there were a stand/dock such that I could hook everything up to it and then just undock the entire machine.

How did you solve the problem of closing the Macbook Pro when it was connected to the display and preventing it from going to sleep?
I am thinking about buying one. When I went to the local Apple Store the tech guys told me that it would be necessary to keep the laptop open slightly when connecting it to the display. They said it was something to do with cooling. It didn't sound right to me. I'm sure that Apple didn't solely intend for the Cinema Displays to be used by Mac Pro and Mac Mini users.
There must be a simple way to "dock" or connect a Mac laptop (Macbook Pro or Macbook) to an Apple Cinema display or any other display with DVI input while keeping the laptop closed with an external keyboard and mouse connected and still be able to use the SuperDrive.
I'm very curious about how you handled this.
    All the best for now,
    Ambrose

  • Apple LED Display Brightness

    Hello,
I have my Apple LED display connected to my Mac Pro via the Nvidia GT 120. How do I turn the brightness up or down? Connecting it to a MacBook Pro, there is a brightness display on the Display preferences, but not when I connect it to my Mac Pro.
I also tried the F1 and F2 keys and also FN + F1/F2. Is there anything I can do?
    Thanks!

Ahhh, that must be it. I can't connect it to my Mac Pro, since it's not long enough. Waiting on my extension to arrive on Friday. Once I connect the USB, does it work with F1/F2 keys or only in Display settings? Thanks!!!

  • Random Black Screen Flash Macbook Air and Apple LED display

So I have started to see an issue with the new Macbook Air and my Apple LED 24" display. Randomly only maybe 2-3 times a day the screen will go black and then quickly come right back, like a blink. Anyone else see this behavior? This does not happen with the internal built-in screen on the MBA. Feels like a driver or software issue to me.

    Hi Steve,
I have the same model you've mentioned. Although my issue is not the same, at times when I open my laptop up, I have a black screen, and have to manually power-down. I can tell the keys still work, as I use the brightness buttons and can tell the contrast is getting higher.
Also last night my keyboard/trackpad stopped working, however the power button did bring up the shutdown options but the trackpad still did not work.

  • Photobooth and new 24 inch LED Display

I have just received my new display today and it is breathtaking.
I am using it with a new macbook pro. Sound has connected ok. ichat defaults once set to the display isight. BUT, photobooth will just not go to the display isight.
    Any ideas guys?

Not sure, but it only seems to work (photo booth) with the LED Display iSight when you have the MBP lid closed. If the lid is open, it only uses the MBP's iSight.

  • Apple LED Display Connection Options

Hello I have a Macbook Pro 2.8 fairly new hooked up with an LED 24' Display. I want to get HD signals from my HD Direct TV set top box. I currently have the EL Gato EyeTv but that is only for analog composite cables. I recently saw a few items available, the Kanex XD and the Gefen DVI to Mini DisplayPort Adapter and im wondering if these will work if I connect one of these adapters through my Macbook Pro? I know it works with a 27" iMac
Also is there a way or any adapter out there that will connect a source with HDMI(PS3,Satellite Box)straight trough my 24' LED Display.
PS i think there is and El Gato HD can work as well.
    thanks

Ahhh, that must be it. I can't connect it to my Mac Pro, since it's not long enough. Waiting on my extension to arrive on Friday. Once I connect the USB, does it work with F1/F2 keys or only in Display settings? Thanks!!!

  • Older Macbook and new 24-inch LED display

Is it possible to connect a mid-2007 Macbook (I think this has the mini DVI connection) to the new LED Cinema Display? Is an adaptor needed? Does one exist?
    Thanks.

    Hi all,
I just received a macbook 13 inches white as present and was looking forward to have a bigger desktop home, I was obviously interested in the 24'' led cinema display, but unfortunatey found out my white brand new macbook was not compatible with it.....I am talking about a brand new product now (july 2009) sold in the apple store!!! I don't even talk about all previous generations macbook macbook pro owners. A mini dvi to mini display adapter is badly needed.
Will some intelligent manager take this chance to satisfy such a large market?
If I had the know-how I would have done it on my own. <Edited by Host>

  • Was Photoshop CS6 for Mac matchd for a new product apple 5k display ?

Apple issued a new product iMac with Retina 5k display on 18 Oct, 2014 on market . This display has a high resolution of 5120*2880. I want to know:
Photoshop CS6 for Mac was designed for this display ?
Can Canon full size photo that is 5760*3840 show at this 5120*2880 screen ?  If yes, That means more detail can be seen than any monitors used before.

From here you should be able to buy photoshop cs6:

  • MBP doesn't work properly with Apple LED Display

I wasn't sure if this should go in this discussion forum or the one created for the cinema display but this makes more sense.
Recently I've been using my MBP (silver with black keys) plugged into my LED cinema display docking station and it's really been acting crazy and not working correctly at all.
Yesterday the computer got stuck in a vicious cycle of putting itself to sleep every 10 seconds or so. I could wake it up with the mouse or keyboard but it would just immediately go back to sleep. I eventually had to hard shut down because it wouldn't give me enough time to do it the humane way.
Today I plugged my laptop into it and the mouse was messed up. The cursor was able to move but the buttons didn't seem to register with the computer. I would hover over the close/min/max buttons but they would't change and I couldn't click anything. The keyboard and everything else worked. Just not the mouse buttons. I had to restart to fix this problem.
Does anybody else have these incompatibility issues with a MBP and the LED Cinema Display??? I don't understand why it's doing this all of a sudden. I've had the display for a year, used it sporadically, and never had issues like this.

I think I may have discovered the problem with my computer getting stuck in the cycle of going to sleep after 10 seconds. It just did it again a minute ago when I plugged my MBP into the display.
I think it's related to the power plug not being all the way in. I have a case on my MBP which makes the power plug fit only one way instead of both (i.e. the direction the wire goes...towards the front or towards the back). When my computer wasn't working correctly previously I had noticed the plug was going back and forth between connected and not because it's magnetic and there's no secure connection into the plug's socket. So today I noticed the same thing. I adjusted the cords so it wouldn't be teetering and now it works.
    Go figure....

  • Apple LED Display top and bottom

Hello, is it normal for the display to be brighter at the top of the screen vs the bottom half? I've noticed that it's slightly more "dark yellow" at the bottom than at the top. Thanks!

  • 5770 with 27" Apple LED and two 20" Apple Cinema Displays w/Mac Pro

As stated, I just bought a brand new Mac Pro 8-core (2010 ID 5,1) with a 5770 card and I'm trying to hook up a new 27" Apple LED and two 20" cinema displays. One of the 20" monitors is using the MDP adapter into the 5770 and the 27" is directly connected to the other MDP port. When I try to hook up the other 20" to the DVI port on the 5770 I get nothing. The screen is black and the it is not recognized as being connected. I'm using the standard DVI connector that came with the 20" direct into the 5770. To make sure it isn't a monitor problem, I switched out the 20" displays and both work using the MDP adapter but neither work plugging directly into the DVI port on the 5770. I believe the 20" monitors use DVI-D. (Is that correct?) So what's the scoop on getting blank screens when plugging into the DVI port on the 5770? Thanks for any help.

"• the 27" is directly connected to the other MDP port.
    • One of the 20" monitors is using the MDP adapter into the 5770.
    • When I try to hook up the other 20" to the DVI port on the 5770 I get nothing.
Note: If you are using an Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter, only two displays are supported across the three ports.
If you are connecting three displays, any DVI displays must be connected to either the Dual-Link DVI port or must use an Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link Adapter.
You MUST use All "Active" or "Powered" Mini DisplayPort connector such as the Apple Dual Link, or you can only use two displays

  • MBP & New Samsung LED display resolution questions

    Hi all -
Just got a new Samsung XL2370 LED display. I've got it hooked up to my new MBP: minidisplay to HDMI. I've got the Samsung at it's highest resolution: 1600x900. The MBP has the hi-res display at 1680x1050. The picture on the Samsung is not as sharp as the MBP, is that because of the unequalness of the resolutions? Would using a minidisplay to DVI look any different? I was thinking not since both HDMI and DVI are digital signals, but I thought I'd ask. The only monitor that seems to look identical to the MBP resolution is Apple's cinema displays, but I didn't want to spend that much on the external monitor.
    Thanks in advance!

The problem is in your choice of using the HDMI connection. Use a VGA connection and you will be able to get the monitor's full resolution. Caution: I've had two cheap VGA adapters go out, but the Apple one (mini-display to VGA) does fine. I use a Samsung 2333HD monitor with my MBP (mid-2010). If I connect to the monitor with an HDMI connection (using a mini-display to HDMI adapter), the highest res on the monitor is 1600 x 900 instead of the monitor's full 1920 x 1080 I get with a VGA connection. By the way, the "Moshi" adapter (mini-display to HDMI) Apple sells does not solve the resolution problem--with it the monitor still gives only 1600 x 900, though it does carry audio. I think the problem is on the Apple side, since Apple has SnycMaster (which is for Samsung) settings in its Display prefs, but in the settings pane's resolution choices the list just tops out at 1600 x 900 when the connection is HDMI.
