New 24" iMac, with free printer.. sharing question

Hello, I just recently purchased a brand-new iMac 24" (the newest one), and also decided to get the free Canon PIXMA MP160 Photo All-in-One Printer as well.
I also have a Macbook Pro, and was wondering how I can setup the printer on the iMac to work with my laptop. I loving being able to connect to a shared printer, and print... but what about scanning? Is there a simple way I can scan documents, and have them sent to my laptop instead of the iMac it is connected too..
My concern is that someone may be using the iMac when I need to scan, so having it all shared is preferred, so anyone connected to the shared device, can print, scan without having to manually move files from the iMac to the laptop or whatever computer they are on.
What are my options?
Hopefully I posted in the right forum, and someone knows a good working solution.
Thanks!!

Anyone out there?

  • IMac with free printer query

Couldn't find anywhere appropriate to post this.....
Two years ago I purchased a new iMac direct from Apple (Ireland) which came with a free HP Photosmart C4680 printer/copier/scanner. At the time I already had a printer so the HP has stayed in its box until now. I opened up the box recently to find that the power cable was missing. Phoned Apple to be told that this was not a mistake and that all those printers were shipped without power cables and it was up to the customer to source one themselves, which they say is the reason they were able to give them away free!!! According to Apple it's a very common cable which should be easy to find. It is in fact an unusual 32V cable that can only be sourced from China at a fee of nearly 80 euro.
I was so taken aback by this that I didn't really argue my case when they said that they weren't willing to do anything about it.
Has anyone ever heard of this strange practice of it being up to the customer to find a power cable for a product as common as a printer?
Does the two year gap mean that Apple are under no obligation to help even though the shipped product was missing a vital component?
I really don't want to have to throw a brand new printer in the bin.
    Thanks.

It sounds like the Apple rep was describing is a USB printer-to-computer cable, which many printer manufacturers stopped including years ago. A power supply/cord is somewhat fundamental to the printers operation.  Two years later is a bit of a stretch to expect Apple to honor what sounds like a packaging defect by HP.  Have you contacted HP about a replacement power supply?

  • IF I BUY THE NEW 24" IMAC WITH A 3GB AIRPORT DO I NEED TO GET AN AIRPORT EXPRESS?

IF I BUY THE NEW 24" IMAC WITH A 3GB AIRPORT DO I NEED TO GET AN AIRPORT EXPRESS?

All Macs have a built in Airport card. You can connect to the internet either using an ethernet cable back to your modem/router, or by wi-fi. If you already have a modem/router which provides a wifi network you don't need anything in addition to the Mac. If you don't have a router providing a wifi network then you will need one - it doesn't have to be an Apple one though they are probably the most suitable.
You say 'a 3GB Airport' - do you mean a Time Capsule? - that is a router providing wifi.

  • Problem with HP Printer Sharing?

I have an HP laserjet 1022 printer that has always worked shared. It's connected to my iMac via usb, and I have always been able to print to it with printer sharing. A few weeks ago however, the print sharing with my macmini and macbook wasn't working. Usually I delete and then readd the printer, but it didn't work this time. Also, now it recognizes the printer, but its trying to use the wrong ?driver? It's trying to use Generic PostScript instead of the normal 1022 it used to use. After my macbook was stolen, I tried to set the printer sharing up with my new macbook pro. That didn't work either. I called HP, but they said there was nothing they could do because it isn't a network printer, it's just printer sharing, and therefore a mac thing. What do I do?

Hi there, I just wanted to let you know what has happened with my printer since.
I called hp, and they said that because the printer didn't have some sort of extended care plan, that they would charge me $45 or I could call Apple. They said specifically that it was Apple's problem (yeah right).
Talked to the most friendly techies ever, and they spent hours on the phone with me trying a bunch of different ideas. Apparently, from what we can figure out, hp simply stopped updating the drivers. When I did try to download the 1022 driver from the website again, it downloads, says its installing, but never actually functions and just disappears. So after everything, even trying the original install cd, we determined that we just can't get it to work.
    One interesting thing though:
The printer is plugged into my imac, and I was trying to print to it (using printer sharing) from my macmini, macbook, or macbook pro. None worked.
But, if I plugged in the printer to any other one of those computers via usb and tried to print wirelessly from the imac, it worked perfectly!
Hope things work out for you!

  • Anyone using a NEW intell iMac with Logic?

I've got many great responses on both sides to my question regarding my quest to determine which machine to use with Logic -- new Mac Pro (the ultimate) or new iMac (likely cover my bases for a long while and save major cash now). One point raised against iMac was fan noise smack dab in the middle of the listening field with the older iMacs. So a sub question to my original is this:
Are there any NEW intell iMac users out there who are using Logic? Is fan noise a problem? Generally, how do you like the iMac's feasibility as a music workstation with Logic? How many tracks/effects are you running and how is it working for you?

Before those concerns are completely alleviated, go over to the iMac hardware forum and do a search for firewire issues. Like actual physical problems with the jacks on the 20" iMac and having drives just completely "disappear".
the reason you will find issues including firewire ones on the imac forum is because it is a forum for people with issues. it may or may not be the case that there is a subsantial issue with FW on the intel imacs, but obviously people who are having issues are going to pop up there making it seem like everyone is having an issue.
for certain types of music production, an imac would be completely unsuitable. but for others it will be ideal.
there drawback of having 800 and 400 FW bus shared is that if you have a 400 device it will slow down 800 devices to 400. that means it would be ideal for impiro to have either both FW drive and interface as 800's or not go to any further expense of getting an 800 hard drive to use for audio since he would not beneift from the speed.
not a great big deal IMO.
iMac DOES lack expandibility, but it doesn't lack horses. actually i would say (and have said) that impiro would do better with an older tower to allow for expandability because he doesn't need that many horses to do what he needs to do. and i certainly feel that it is unnecessary to spend money on a computer that would be better spent on other things relating to the move to computer based music mixing.
never-the-less, the kind of live musician-audio-based music impiro is going to be making is childs play for modern computers. he will be able to run loads of tracks and plug-ins before a new imac will even break a sweat. even with an interface and a FW drive on 1 bus running at 400. he just won't be able to run loads and loads.
and man....even if he decides to get more heavily into it and start buying third party cards and this that and the next thing he can look at the next computer being a tower. personally, i am changing my computer every 3 years or less - it'll take him at least that long to find the ceiling on a new imac.

  • Printer sharing question

I have an HP Laserjet 3020 all-in-one device directly connected to a desktop running XP Pro. I also have a new laptop on my home network running Windows 7 home premium. HP tells me I cannot print to the shared LJ 3020 over the network because the printer is not forward compatible. In other words, the printer has to be connected to the latest OS. You cant print from a newer OS to a printer shared on an older OS.
Two questions: Is this accurate info? and if it is, Will Network Magic solve this issue so I can print from the Windows 7 laptop to a shared printer on an XP Pro desktop?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Mike208,
That's wrong. The problem is that you don't have Windows 7 Network and Sharing Center properly configured. You need to configure the Public Profile because you have mixed operating systems on your network.

  • Brand new Intel iMac with hard drive failure?

I have a two week old iMac. I shut it down last night. When I started it this morning I got a folder with a question mark. I had no warnings or indications of any problems prior to this. I had just loaded some Disney pictures and have no backup of them except an iPod that was synced last night. I used the OS install disk utility to look and there is no volume and no option to verify or repair. This is a maxed out iMac with 750 gig drive. Is this a known problem. Is there anyway to get the data? Do I need to start backing up every time touch the computer? Also are the songs and pictures on the ipod the same quality as the originals? Can I get them back?
The funny thing is, I had bought this computer to replace another one that was flakey with kernal panic. This is the end of the school year and my wife (a teacher) uses this one for paper work. I thought I had done a nice thing for her. HELP!!!!

Yes HDDs can go bad, right out of the box. All manufacturers have hardware failures of new product. We have had them reported here on occasion. In fact, we are more likely to hear about the failures than the millions of folks that got good ones. People don't post, "Hey, I got my new Mac and the HDD is fine!"
The question mark at startup is an indication that the Mac can't find its boot volume and HDD failure is one scenario to explain why it can't. The good thing is that it is covered by Apple's warranty, so you need to call Apple Care and initiate a claim to get a replacement/repair in the works asap.
I know that is a pain, but it happens occasionally.
The music and photos on your iPod should be exactly what is on the HDD. The exception may be photos that you have altered in iPhoto before transferring them to the iPod. iPhoto manages originals separately from modifieds. I don't have an iPod, but in the case of a modified photo, I doubt the original was also transfered.

  • Problems with file/print sharing between macs

I just recently created a network between my mac pro and my imac. I discovered that the only way that I could share files/printers between the two is if I shut off the firewall on both machines. If I let the firewall 'allow only essential services ie, file and printer sharing, the machines would see each other and the printers, but would not allow either to connect. Any suggestions?

    Thanks a lot Frank.
The firewall has always been disabled, since I baught my iBook.
There's two issues, the irc app and the videocam app.
Guess the videoapp is an easier issue. The port is 2000-2002
The irc application is I think a little more complicated, it has two settings in the prefs file (the app is IRCLE):
    1. In the DCC prefs I flagged the "ADSL, Airport, IPNetRouter and have flagged the auto configure for the Public IP Number (151.51.138.131).
    2. There is also a Firewall prefs. I haven't done anything with this. There's an areal called "Ident Settings (OS X only)". There one can flag the "Run Ident on a different port than the usual 113" If one flags that, then you can choose the port (it says it must to be 1024 or greater). "Note: you may need to change your firewall rules to make ident work this way, redirect incoming ident data for TCP port 133 to the port set above"
    Does this make any sense?
    Thanks a lot again, really,
    Emmanuel

  • Brand new 27" iMac with Snow Leopard has constant hard disk activity

I just purchased a new 27" iMac which was an upgrade for my 24" with Leopard. I have used my older machine for a good year and not noticed any hard drive activity when idle.
Now on the new machine with Snow Leopard I constantly get hard disk activty every few seconds.
    This will happen from:
    1) Restart
    2) leaving at login screen
    3) loggin in and not running anything.
    4) Computer screen in sleep mode.
    5) well, all the time really.
I have looked at the activity monitor and can see spikes every 5-10 seconds.
I have turned off all processes possible, watched processes for CPU spikes, etc to no avail.
Is anyone else having the same problem and if so can they suggest a fix? I originally thought it may be something writing to a log every so often but I have no idea what and how to find it.
Using iStat just confirms the activity.
Hope you can help as this is driving me mad!

    chicken of the VNC
    GoToMeeting
    Cisco VPN Client
    Xmarks for safari and firefox
I would start by checking each of these items, making sure you have the latest versions of each & that they are compatible with Snow Leopard. Do the same for any Firefox extensions or any plugins associated with any of these applications. In particular, chicken of the VNC hasn't been updated since 2006 & what little compatibility info I can find for it suggests it supports only Tiger (10.4) & 10.3.9. The Download Xmarks page indicates that it is beta software.
Also note that some of these items may do more than just run as applications. On first run or install, some might install startup or login items, or preference panels that remain in effect even when the application is not running. Check /Library/StartupItems & /System/Library/StartupItems -- both are empty by default, so anything you find in them is suspect. Likewise, check the System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items tab. Anything you find in them that does not appear to come from Apple (like iTunes helper) is suspect. Also check the "Other" category of System Preferences.

  • New Apple iMac with Existing Software

I currently use 64 bit Lightroom 3.0 MLP on my PC.  I justed ordered the new Apple iMac 27 inch and I'm trying to get confirmation as to whether or not my software will work on the iMac.  Some people say it will be fine and others said that I'll have to order an iMac that's reconfigured.  Help, does anyone know if the software has to be ordered special for iMacs?

    >The same serial number will work on Mac and/or Windows (max 2 activations).
The serial number will actually work on as many installations as you try it on. You would just be breaking the license agreement if you actually do that so I'd advise against that. This is different from the CS apps where the license is actually checked over the internet and you need to deactivate your old installation if you upgrade your computer which is always a pain. WIth Lightroom if you upgrade your computer, you can just wipe the old computer's harddisk and not be worried that your license number won't work on the new computer.

  • Has anyone used the new 5K imac with AE CC and is it a big improvment speed wise or not?

I am thinking about getting the 5K imac with the i7 4.4 GHz quad-core and AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB GDDR5, but my big concern is that the video card is not Nvidia and does not use cuda core.
I currently have a late 2012 imac with the 3.4 Intel Core i7 and a Nvidia GeFroce GTX 680MX 2048 MB and sometimes it is very slow when working with a lot of effects or layers.
    1. If you have any experience with the 5K imac, please let me know how you like it?
    2. Was Apple going to the AMD video card a good or bad thing?
    3. Do you think I would benefit any speed gain with the new 5K imac and by what percentage.

The AMD video card is not a good hardware selection with the current media content creation software. Open CL is still lagging behind CUDA in performance and the CPU's did not change with the new Imac. So basically it's a new Imac with a updated video card and 5K screen. Not something I would suggest for Adobe if you already have an Nvidia solution.

  • New iPod Touch with January Update Restore Question

    Hi,
Few days ago i bought new iPod Touch with 1.1.3 software and January Update.
When I restore it I'll lose my January Update programs ? And if that happened what can I do to get them back ?
PS. Sorry for my poor english :P
    Cheers

It was mentioned already in this thread. If you look at the package check the seriel number. If it ends with /B then that is the new model and it has the new applications that were provided in the Jaunary update already programmed into the iPod. If you restore you will not lose them.
If it ends with /A then it is an older model that required the January Update in order to get the applications on your iPod. If you restore then you will lose them but you don't need to purchase them again as your iTunes will keep track of the purchase for you.

  • White lines in Firefox on new 27 iMac with 10.6.2

I get white lines on images being displayed in firefox. These are high resolution images from searching google images. I did not have any trouble on my 20 inch imac with 10.5.
I can use Command + Shft + 4 to take a snapshot and the white lines are recorded. I am thinking that this may be a Firefox issue, but cannot find anything online and as there are many people complaining about the graphics cards in the imac 27 inch, I thought I would check in. I am also on the latest firmware.
Is anyone else having this issue?
I am on the latest version of firefox and apple updates.

That would be the best bet. I do not see SL as being the cause.

  • Printer sharing questions

I've been unsuccessful in attempts to network my iMac (OS 9.2) and my powerbook G4 (OS 10.4.6) to a multifunction printer (Epson Stylus Photo RX620). The computers are connected to an ethernet router for DSL service and I was told by tech support at Epson that I could network the printer to the computers with an ethernet cable from printer to hub. However I was unable to find a usb/ethernet cable and have since been told that I need a USB print server to act as a bridge from the printer to the ethernet hub.
I also checked the mac help menu and found instructions "Printing to a Mac OS X shared printer from Mac OS 9 via LPD/LPR" but that was unsuccessful.
Now for my questions: 1. Is my information about need for the print server correct? 2. If so, can you suggest a source? Dr. Bott does not have them; Belkin seems to have PC only; others are not compatable with OS 9, or with non-post script printers, or multifunction printers. A search of "print servers" at the Apple store was no help. If a straight ethernet cable connection of printer to ethernet hub is a possibility, that would be the simplest to do-- if that is an option, I'd need suggestions of a source for that also.
    Thank you for any suggestions.
    powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Numerous contacts with vari9us Epson tech support providers finally yielded the information that, contrary to printed specs, the epson printer could not be networked.

  • New intel iMac with reduction on Microsoft Office 2004

    Hi.
I am seriously considering buying a new iMac Intel Core Duo. If i order before the end of january along with Microsoft office, i can get upto 50% off office.
I know that the current version of office will run fine on the new iMac Intel Core Duo using 'Rosetta' and that they are developing a new version to be released in march that will run native on the intel imac.
Therefore, if i buy office with my iMac now, I will not have the native version and I will have to buy the new version again?
I am quite confused and really unsure what to do?
Would it be worth me buying office now?
Will i be able to upgrade to the new version for free?
.... I dont understand why apple are selling a version of office with the new iMacs if it is not even the proper software.
Please help me as I am unsure of what to do.
    Thanks a lot in advance...

I'm not positive on this but I think I remember, during the keynote speech, the woman that was from the MSBU saying the updates would be available for download at no charge. Might be worth looking at that part of the keynote to be sure. I don't remember the date she said they would be available though.
