New 27" iMac:  Airport - cannot create Computer to Computer Network

Howdy,
I recently upgraded from 24" iMac (10.6.2) to a new 27" iMac (10.6.2).
Unlike the old 24" iMac (flawless Airport WiFi) the new 27" will not allow
me to create a Computer-to-Computer WiFi Network...... required to establish
WiFi connection for my iPhone 3G.
Have tried all channels 1-13... with no success. (also all combinations with & w/o Security)
However, If I switch on a Airport Express unit .... the 27" iMac will join with that Network
This is baffling me...... has anyone got an answer... or is it a SL bug ?
Is anyone else having this same problem?

That's funny, cause I had no problems connecting to wifi until I updated to 10.6.4. Now my iMac doesn't see ANY wifi networks
Don,
I can only re-confirm that the Mac OSX 10.6.4 update... has completely resolved all my WiFi issues I had with this 27" iMac (C2D) .... which was endured for some 5.5 months - since its delivery.
I cannot account for your Machine.... However, there does seem to be a few variations on the 10.6.4 update ? Perhaps you could check which version you have applied ?
Good Luck... hope your problem does not last as long as mine did !!

The short and direct answer to your question about catalogs on a network drive is that you can't do that. The catalog must reside on a local drive.

Purchased new 27 iMac and cannot seem to find PAGES, NUMBERS or KEYNOTE programs. I installed OS X MAV and still cannot find them. In the app store they cost money.

They need to be downloaded; you can use this in case they do not show up on your Purchases list:

  • New 27" iMac: AIRPORT & BlueTooth Connection Problems

    Hi There,
My 24" Intel Imac (C2D) has been replaced with new 27" iMac.
The problems mentioned below did not exist on the 24", However, I have real wireless
    connection problems with the new 27";
    1. AIRPORT: 27" iMac will not create Network (Computer to Computer) therefore I am unable to connect my iPhone 3G to its WiFi Network (some iPhone Apps - require WiFi)
    2. BLUETOOTH: Although the 27" Imac is paired with my iPhone 3G - it will not connect iPhone to
Bluetooth..... BT options for both iPhone and iMac are ON and set as Discoverable.
(Note: Apple Wireless Keyboard & Apple Magic Mouse are both connected)
It seems as though Apple have changed procedure for actioning the above on these new 27" iMacs,
however they have not documented what is required to make it happen..... OR its a bug in 10.6.2 ??
If anyone has similar problems or knows of a workaround - all comments and advice would be much appreciated.
NB: This 27"iMac has no problems joining with an Airport Network (Airport Extreme Module) which then allows the iPhone 3G to also connect to that (for WiFi) But, that would seem to be an awkward and unnecessary proceedure ??
I'm baffled - there seems to be something missing (in OS Software or Procedure)

    Sound like some strange issues.
    1. AIRPORT: 27" iMac will not create Network (Computer to Computer) therefore I am unable to connect my iPhone 3G to its WiFi Network (some iPhone Apps - require WiFi)
So you don't have a wireless network that you normally use?

Are you saying that the iMac is using Bluetooth to connect to the keyboard and mouse but can't connect via Bluetooth to the iPhone?

  • Airports are creating too many separate networks, how to fix?

Here's a picture of my current setup.  I have 1 Airport extreme that creates a 2ghz and 5ghz network.  It travels via ethernet to a airtport express 2G that creates  2ghz and 5ghz networks of the same name as the Airport etreme.
Within that whole setup I have 2 Airport express' extending the 2ghz network which I believe is creating my problem.....
With this whole setup some sections of my home get these results:
It's quite annoying especially when streaming airplay because my iphone or such device will jump back and forth between the two networks making the music stream choppy.
How would I make both the networks merge as one?  Is there a way to extend a network using ethernet as the connection instead of wifi??

Oh wow, I feel like a fool, how did i not catch that >.<
Also one last question, should I allow the 2nd gen express' network to be extended whil I'm already allowing the airport extreme as well?
Thanks I'm pretty sure you fixed this

  • Airport Extreme - creating a wired local network from a cellular hotspot without ethernet ports?

Forgive the book I've written below, please. I generally think too much info is better than not enough... I'm looking for assistance and/or suggestions since I have been unable to locate solutions on my own so far. Searching this forum has found a great number of "sort-of" related things, but all of them so far appear to involve apple-only hardware or upstream network devices which have ethernet ports. Nothing that seems to match my situation enough to extrapolate out. Maybe I'm just using the wrong keywords. Anyway....
I've recently moved to a particularly rural area with no wired internet access to speak of (well, I suppose there is dial-up, but... yeah). I've tried several different wireless varieties including satellite, the AT&T Elevate 4G hotspot and a service that used an EVDO-cellular solution(a sprint-based reseller).  The former had serious latency issues which I had predicted and so was right-out. The last had signal coverage problems which their maps did not accurately reveal. Their potential mitigation was to have me invest even more money into a super-mega antenna to be roof-mounted. And even that was an uncertain fix. The AT&T solution with the 4G hotspot has been AMAZING so far and I love it. Coverage is great, latency and bandwidth fantastic.
I love it but for one exception, that is. Connectivity options.
There is a particularly limited number of WiFi connections available and only a USB network adapter for a single computer. None of my wired-only network devices can connect directly and I have significantly more WiFi connected devices in general use than the device supports.
I have an Airport Extreme that I was using as my primary connection point through a FiOS router at my previous home(and both the satellite and EVDO modems at the new place). Never had any problems with it when feeding its WAN port with one of the various routers' LAN ports. However, as has been evident by reading all sorts of posts here and elsewhere, having it connect via WiFi to the Elevate means that the ethernet ports are disabled. Not terribly useful.
The Elevate has no ethernet ports. Only WiFi and USB network connectivity.
The Elevate does not appear to have settings available to create a WDS network-- so it cannot be "Extended" via those methods, either, as far as I am able to tell.
So these are some thoughts I've had. Before I invest the time and money into them(both of which are in extremely short supply lately), I'd like to know if anyone else has already solved the issue or can tell me definitively whether these ideas, or some I haven't thought of, will or won't work. Any helpful feedback or thoughts would be sincerely appreciated.
Options I've considered, but are uncertain:
-A Wifi/Ethernet or even ethernet-only router which has a USB WAN uplink(I've had a few bites on searching, but nobody seems 100% clear on the capability for the models I've located). I could plug the Elevate into that USB port and then from there I'm golden. If this is the best option, then can someone recommend a brand/model that they know will work in this way?
-WiFi Access Point (Airport Express, maybe?) that will connect to the elevate via WiFi, and then use its single Ethernet port to serve as the APExtreme's WAN uplink. (I don't know if this will work at all, actually...)
-Connect to the computer via USB, run some kind of network bridging software (which I don't know what the heck that would be) to bridge between the USB Network and the Ethernet port, then run a hard wire from there to the APExtreme's standard ethernet WAN uplink. This is going to be a "last resort" option since it involves software I'm unfamiliar with, even unsure of availability for Mac, and requires the computer to be running and configured properly at all times. Given the way my kids abuse a computer, I can't be certain of anything involving this option.
-Some secret method of turning on WDS capabilities in the Elevate which would then allow my existing base station to become a second node in the chain. I really wish someone could tell me this is possible if only I'd push the right buttons. I see this is as the absolute best option, if it can be done. Cheapest, anyway.
    Current set-up:
    AT&T Elevate 4G hotspot
WiFi connected devices(rotating since Wifi connection count is limited): Mac PC, 2 iPads, 3 iPhones, Apple TV, a Nokia mini-tablet, a Kindle fire, Wii, XBox 360, an old dell laptop issued by my office.
    Apple Aiport Extreme base station
Wired connections: blueray player, television, satellite TV pay-per-view uplinky device thing.
    Please, tell me your thoughts?

Had the same issue here.  Here is the best solution I have found so far:
Hotspot + Pepwave Max On-The-Go (w/ Load Balancing) + Airport Extreme
I have a VZW MiFi, but I believe this set-up will work with other hotspot devices.  I actually have 2 MiFi Hotspots with a monthly allowance of 20G each.  They are plugged directly into the Pepwave router (aka, tethered).  (Note:  you have to have the right cable to do this.  The one that came with my Hotspot was only for charging.)  If, for some reason, you cannot tether with your Hotspot device, you want a router that offers WiFi as WAN.  The Pepwave will do this.  The Pepwave is connected to my Airport Extreme via ethernet cable.  I have the WiFi on the MiFis and the Pepwave turned off.  So the only visible network is my Airport Extreme.  The Pepwave is essentially just functioning as a modem.
I used to have a Cradlepoint, but I did not find it very user friendly--too complex for home use.  The Pepwave Max OTG is awesome.  I got the one with Load Balancing so it allows you to connect up to 4 cellular devices.  If you only need the one Hotspot, you can just get the cheaper Pepwave Max OTG.  The Pepwave allows me to run off one of the MiFis until I hit my 20G/month allowance, then it automatically switches to the other one.  That way I never max-out on my monthly data allowance.  Additionally, it gives you a real-time, hourly, daily and monthly running tally on data usage.
The guys at the 3Gstore are excellent and can help you figure out the best solution for your situation.

  • Airport Extreme created an unsecured, third, network

My Airport Extreme is set to create two secured networks, one is 802.11G, the other is N. My iPad and iPods can see the two networks. However, my Macs see a third network that has a 12 character, random name. This network is not secured. When I connect to this network, Airport Utility gets full access to the Airport Extreme.
I also have 5 Airport Expresses on this network. When I connect to this third network, none of the airport expresses are visible in airport utility. Of course, when I connect to the G or N network, airport utility sees the Airport Extreme and the Airport Expresses.
So, what is this third network?

Here's the report system profiler: The two "chipotlenet" networks are mine and so are the "you are b watch" networks, which are the guest networks. I'm now connected to the mysterious third network which gives me access to my Airport Extreme, and the Internet but not to the Airport Expresses that are hanging off of chipotlenet.

  • Cannot create an Essbase connection from Workspace

    Hi all,
I have a new install and I cannot create a Essbase connection from Workspace. I can successfully create the essbase connection from Reporting Studio but I can't use that connection from Workspace. It seems like Workspace can't connect to Essbase. Has anyone experienced this before? Thanks...

Workspace can connect to Essbase. To connect to Essbase perform the below task:
    1) Install Essbase Client on the Server where you have install BI Services.
    2) Configure DAS by using Service Configurator.
    3) Create an OCE which should connect to Essbase Server.
    4) Import OCE in to Workspace. Use this oce to create connection.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion   3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS) cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC.

Installed today Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion. I also have  3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS). Internet Access is cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC. Does the Airport utility under Windows is way to access backup capabilities with TC ?

The TC is really just an external networked hard disk plus router.. you can access the hard disk and place files on it from any computer. You can backup any computer to the TC but it will have to use a backup software in windows.. there are literally thousands available. The built in msbackup is horrible.. but you can download lots of different software and buy then online for not a lot. Macrium Reflect has a free disk image backup, and when you pay for it includes incremental. I think disk images are well worth it, as they recover much better.. and their is a proper method of recovery using a boot cd.
BTW the TC space is not endless. And it is designed to hold a large number of incremental backups.. so anything you do in backing up several machines will make the number of backups limited. Remember you can also use a usb hard disk plugged in as a Network accessible disk. But it has to be formatted HFS+ or Fat32.. the later being highly undesirable.

  • Cannot create new Calendar Group in Mountain Lion

I am using a brand new iMac. I didn't use the migration tool-- instead I exported all of my Calendars from Snow Leopard and Imported them via the File menu in the Calendar application in Mountain Lion.
Under the File menu, there is no "New Calendar Group" option. Command-Shift-N results in an error alert sound and no action.
I do not use iCloud for anything other than email-- everything is turned off in System Preferences.
In Calendar, under the Preferences -> Accounts section, I have NO accounts. It is completely blank.
My previous groups from my export/import are there under the "On My Mac" section of the Calendars panel. I can edit them. But I cannot create any new ones.
Any suggestions? Everything on the internet says I need to deactivate my iCloud account calendars... but I don't use them.

Ah, Barney, you are a lifesaver!
Sorry for the late reply, I was away from my computer this weekend.
All of my calendars had been in groups. I moved one of them outside, and TA DA-- "New Calendar Group" appeared.
Thanks so much for the help. I will have to leave 1 calendar outside of a group so I can add as many as I'd like.

  • IMac Airport Wireless from UK not working in New Zealand

I have a iMac that i bought in the UK but now live in New Zealand and i cannot get the wireless internet. Sometime s i can connect however often it is slow and drops out. then when i try to reconnect the internet times out. Iv tried changing the security encryption to no avail.
every other computer works on the network fine, i can only think it must be something to do with the airport region.
does anyone know or have experienced similar problems from moving accessing wireless internet from a different country other than where they purchased there mac from?
any help or feedback would be much appreciated

    Hi,
At least according to the AirPort Extreme (802.11n draft) specifications, there are certain channel differences between New Zealand and other countries/regions. I do not know whether this, somehow, could have something to do with the difficulties in question (normally, in the case of a channel problem, a connection should not be possible). Which iMac model is it? Which base station is used? Did you buy the base station and the other computers locally?
Have you tried moving the iMac a bit? Is there a cordless phone near the iMac? This article about interference could perhaps be of interest.

I am trying to move my itunes library from my old pc to my new imac, home sharing is on and I can see the shared library.  My problem is that when I check the shared library to import it to my imac I cannot import it.  Can anyone help me?

You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before.

My apple id attached to my itunes account has expired
They don't expire. As far as anyone knows Apple IDs live on forever - if you forgot its password use https://iforgot.apple.com. Good luck with the answers to whatever security questions it asks.
... I have created a new apple id but cannot transfer it to my itunes which all my apple products connect up to on my mac with all my pictures etc on!?!
Right! That's the reason you do not create a new Apple ID.
As far as Apple is concerned a new Apple ID is a completely different user, with absolutely, positively no access to anything available to any other Apple ID.
Concentrate your efforts on resetting the password to your old Apple ID. It has not expired, and is the only way to use all your existing iTunes purchases, App Store purchases, computer authorizations... etc. Forget about the new Apple ID you just created.
