New 27" iMac crashing
Bought a new 27" iMac recently, upgraded with the i7 processor & GTX 780M 5gb video card. System has 32gb RAM. I received the machine the same day Mavericks was released, so before doing anything I upgraded the OS (but did NOT do a clean install. Mistake?)
I'm getting frequent crashes, usually (though not exclusively) on waking from sleep. When it happens Console shows two crash reports; any ideas what might be the issue?

Thanks to that clue, I tracked it down - OpenBase is used by SOHO Notes from Chronos. Figuring out what to replace it with now, though I'm puzzled because it runs fine (and has for a couple of years) on my 2009 iMac. ???
More data: last night the machine crashed again - same symptoms - but now there's also a kernel panic associated with it. Could OpenBase be causing the panic? (Keep in mind this is a new machine, so I'm not ruling out a hardware issue.)

New Intel iMac crashes after a screen flash
My new Intel iMac keeps crashing. When I'm using Photoshop CS3 the screen flashes and then the machine crashes. Did a search but couldn't find anyone else reporting the same problem. I updated the recent firmware update from Apple.
Hello m:
You indicate your system is new. Your best course of action would be to contact Applecare (or take it to an Apple store) for diagnosis and/or repair (under warranty).
Barry -
I have many projects made in imovie HD that are not updating to iMovie 10 on my new iMac. Why is this not working as stated on the article HT202853? How do I get my projects back from backup after old iMac crashed?
According to:
Update projects and events from previous versions of iMovie in iMovie (2014) - Apple Support
you can update from iMovie versions 7, 8 and 9, but iMovie HD is iMovie 6.
Maybe you can update in two steps, first from iMovie 6 to iMovie 7, 8 or 9 then to iMovie 10.

Why is aperture crashing on my brand new 27" iMac ?
I just purchased a new 27" imac:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac14,2
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 3.5 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 8 MB
Memory: 16 GB
I purchased this to replace my 2008 MBP whish was too slow for editing large files. I saved up to buy this new machine and am at wit's end already.
I installed Aperture (original disc and upgrade disc, then did upgrade to latest version via ap store.
I imported files from one SD card (less than 900 files) into Aperture. They are on my drive, not an external. I have not even set up time
I have opened iphoto and opened photostream for that, but not for Aperture.
I have not installed any plugins for Aperture--though I own Photomatix and am waiting to install it until this is resolved.
I did not transfer anything from my previous machine, nor use migration assistant as I wanted this to be very clean. I've only set up two email addresses in mail--seriously I'm keeping this machine clean.
SO...My first Aperture session resulted in a spontaneous re-boot. Since then, Aperture has crashed (and I've sent a report) each of the 4 or 5 times I've tried to use it. I'm doing basic things like cropping, viewing with and without the loupe, rotating through view between thumbnails, full screen and
What gives?!
THE WHOLE REASON I SPENT THIS MUCH MONEY IS TO USE APERTURE TO EDIT PHOTOS.And today:

My father-in-law recently bought a new 17 inch iMac with a I Gig of Ram, running at 1.667 mz, the whole nine yards. Nice machine. He bought it on my recommendation. It worked good until it started crashing. He put up with it for a while. I told him he didn't have to do that. So he took it back to his Apple dealer. They ran diagnostics and then determined it was the logic board. So they replaced that. He brought it home and it continues to crash, screen going dark and then it asks him to restart. The bizarre part of it all is it happens mostly at 2:40p.m. to 2:50p.m. almost on clockwork. What's up with that?
He's calling the Apple dealer tomorrow. They surely will tell him to bring it back in. Anybody have any ideas? This is a vexing problem, one that shouldn't be happening on a new machine.
iMac G4 Flat Screen Mac OS X (10.4.1)If it really always happens about the same time, a likely culprit would be a power problem caused by someone turning on a cooking device or heater at that time -- and causing a voltage drop or surge in the same circuit.
Is your Dad noticing any lights dimming?
Another alternative, if it is connected via wireless, would be some kind of radio interference caused by someone nearby who is on a regular schedule with using a microwave oven, cordless phone, or wireless computer.
Again, it would be useful to know what programs you Dad is running at that time.
And the timing might just be co-incidence, in which case the range of possible causes is a lot larger. -
My Imac crashed. How do i put a backup on a new one?
My Imac crashed. I have a new one and have been using it for a while, but I have a back up of the old mac with time machine and would like to put it on the new one. I'd like it to have the hole mac. I don't want the stuff which is on the imac, only the backup!
Thanks for the help.Time Machine is one method, this has been part of OS X since Leopard came out 5 years ago. Use Spotlight and type Time Machine to locate it. Apple also provides a tutorial on what it is, I'm away from my Mac at the moment so you will have to Google Time Machine Tutorial to locate it.
I would also recommend creating a second backup on a second external HD. With backup, redundancy is a VERY good thing because backups can fail too. To create a second backup I would recommend either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Both apps create bootable clones of your internal HD. Time Machine cannot be booted but it's great for lost, deleted or otherwise misplaced, files, apps, etc...You can find both SD and CCC by Googling them, both current cost less than $30 and are both excellent apps. Which one you choose IMHO doesn't really matter, personally I use SD but many others have been using CCC with excellent results for years. Both are kept up-to-date and have very good support. A bootable clone is an exact copy of your internal HD, it can be used to boot your system in the event of an internal HD failure so you can return to work immediately. -
Ichat 3.1.6 keeps crashing on new intel iMac
I never had problems with ichat on my old eMac. However, since I have made a switch to a new intel iMac, ichat keeps crashing in the middle of video conversations. What's more, Safari and Mail also stop working then. The only remedy is to restart the iMac, but these crashes keep coming again from time to time.
Can somebody help?
Regards
HelmutYou bought a new Mac and you can't use it because Safari crashes! Wow, such progress!
I thought Mountain Lion would use Safari 6 not version 5.
You should not have this problem with a new machine. Contact the store and ask them to install Safari 6 for you even if that means the inconvienience of having to take it back to the (real) store. -
Brand New iMac Crash (twice in one day)
I just bought a brand new 27inch iMac 2 weeks ago - its running Mavericks
Today I came home to find the computer switched off. I turned it back on and then later in the day came back to find it off again.
I went to terminal and typed "last" and saw two crashes listed (see below). My question is, how can I find out what caused the crash? Its a brand new machine, has 32gb ram and 3.5ghz i7.

Check the current hbernate mode with this terminal command.
pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
The a google search for the options available.
It seems that with certain hibernate modes the system goes into Deep Sleep, Hibernate, and crashes when coming out of it. So if your system is doinig that disable the Deep Sleep, hibernate mode, and test.
The hibernate mode is where the system write RAM data to the Sleep Image files on the hard drive and then is supposed to load that back into RAM when you wake it up. Somewhere in that process the system crashes. -
IMac Crashing; No Fixes Working/Getting a Chance to Work
Hi, this is my first time on these forums asking a question, so forgive me if I've categorised this wrong or something.
I use my iMac nearly everyday for browsing the Internet, word prossessing, digital drawing and playing Minecraft. So, personally, I don't think it is ever being put to degree of stress because I've been doing those same tasks on it for well over a year and it has run smoothly and given me no trouble. However, two days ago, I logged in and got a finder error message, which although I found odd, I simply okayed, not really taking a note of it as I in no way expected crashing issues to arise from it. The error code started with something like -108, which I now believe was the code -10810.
So I continued using the computer after I okayed the message, only to find that Skype (which automatically opens at login) quit unexpectedly. After clicking the "reopen" button on the report, the Skype icon bounced once, the blue light underneath appearing for a second. After this I noticed the finder report and clicked it's "reopen" button and thought it didn't work as the report was still there, but it was in fact a second report as every time I tired to open finder, I would receive a new report in mere mili-seconds. I tried other programs such as Safari and Minecraft and they all wouldn't open. Then I went to restart the computer when I noticed the Apple icon and toolbar missing. So I shut down the computer using the power button.
On reboot, things started going crazy. Booting took a while, when it loaded the desktop, it would fade to blue for a few seconds then fade back to the desktop. After a few minutes, the dark, transparent curtain moved down the screen and the message "You have to restart your computer" appeared.
I've tried numerous times to find out the problem/fix it but nothing seems to be working. Worse, the computer either crashes/freezes at login, crashes within seconds of reaching the desktop or works fine (with noticable odd things occurring [such as the screen going blue, desktop items disappearing and then reappearing] but if I try to run things that may help fix my problems (such as software update, reinstalling OS X) the computer crashes/freezes.
What I've tired so far:
The reset (I can't remember the name) where you detach the power cable and hold down the power button for five seconds, then reattach the cable and turn on the computer. No apparent effect.
Safe Mode:
Worked first time, however it crashed while on the desktop on second and third use, after which I haven't used it.
Single-User Mode for fsck:
fsck ran fine, reporting that it did alter something and I had hoped that this had fixed it, but as soon as I reached the desktop, the iMac crashed.
Software Update:
My Internet is bad enough as it is (less than 1MB/Sec, problem with living in a rural area and being on a contract until October) so I haven't been keeping up with some updates as it takes forever to download them. However, anytime I try to update now, the computer either crashes, won't open Software Update or freezes while it goes to install the updates.
Disk Utility:
Found nothing wrong.
Reinstalling Mac OSX: (Via holding down C at bootup and from the disk if I reach the desktop.)
Either the computer freezes on the Apple logo and spinning gear (which usually doesn't even appear whenever I booted up the iMac) when I hold down C, or it will freeze/crash as the computer tries to restart opening the utilities panel if I run the reinstall from the desktop.
Everytime I've tried to boot the computer today (day three) has resulted in the computer staying on the Apple logo and spinning gear. So without going any further, I decided to ask this to the community because nothing seems to be working, worse being the fact that I'm just on my holidays from University and I'm pretty much lost without the computer
As for the iMac's details I'm really not sure since I generally use the "About this Mac..." feature which I can't get to now. Although I think the only important bits is that it is running on OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with no external hard drives.
I'd really appretiate any help, thanks
AletonumOne of the memory cards was indeed faulty, and the other completely fine
Thanks very much for all your help!
Although there is one little thing that I've noticed. The iMac works properly, but I tried to software update to see if that may help my Minecraft sound issue (as I still don't think only having 2GB instead of 4GB would cause such a problem) but the software update application won't work. Running the "Software Update" from the apple menu on the toolbar gains no response, nothing happens. If I run the software update from system preferences, the application icon appears for a second, then disappears (as in the blank app. icon, the blank canvas with the pencil, pen and ruler in the bottom right corner). It does this every time I try to run it. It did work when the computer was crashing, but this started when on one of the occasions I ran the app. while it was crashing. Since this occured during the crashes, and still occurs now, I'm wondering did something simlar happen minecraft, as it's sound disappeared during the crashes and is still gone now.
However, the computer is now working again without crashes, which is the main thing, thanks for helping me fix the issue
Edit: I would mark the topic as solved, but I'm unsure if this would lock the topic or something simlar, so I'd rather leave it open for any ideas regarding the software update and Minecraft issues I'm having -
2008 24" iMac crashing both SnowLeopard and Mavericks
My iMac crashes about 1-3 times a day, usually while scrolling (either via scroll wheel or using mouse), or switching tasks. Sometimes the screen goes blank (either solid grey or white, or horizontal grey or white stripes, or all black), or the screen presents the normal picture but the cursor disappears or doesn't move, or the cursor moves over a normal screen but no actions can be taken (force quit not available either by mouse or by keyboard). Often I have Mail or Safari open but not always. So I have to do a hard kill and then restart. Computer restarts normally and nothing seems damaged. Apps work as they should.
This problem occurred when I was running Snow Leopard, and has reoccurred after switching to Mavericks. I keep the OS updated to the latest version of each. My iMac has 4 GB RAM and 1 TB HD (3 partitions) currently with TimeCapsule Router (2TB HD), but I had the same problems under Snow Leopard when running 2 GB RAM and 320MB HD and Airport Base Station.
When I upgraded OS to Mavericks and HD to 1TB I did disk repair using Apple's tool as well as Drive Genius3, then did a backup, and then inserted new HD and installed Mavericks to a 700GB partition, and restored from backup. Then I used AppZapper to remove residual of all apps that would no longer run under Mavericks. Also tried disabling all Safari extensions. All to no avail.
Do anyone have any ideas? Is this related to older HW (Core 2 Duo) and newer OS?Create a new admin user account in Users & Groups preferences. If you have Automatic Login enabled, then disable it. Restart the computer and choose the new account for login.

IMac Crashes when I render - also very slow
Having used CS5 for some time on a 24 inch 2008 iMac, I recently upgraded to CS6 when I purchased a very "new" used iMac. The iMac in question was from a work colleague who purchased it for one project then decided to buy a Macbook instead. He had it for under 5 months.
The spec is as follows: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i5-2.7-27-inch-aluminum-mid-201 1-thunderbolt-specs.html:// it came with 12GB RAM (bought from an Apple approved dealer)
I am loading 1080p files from four Sony NX5s and either nesting them or where required (two filming dates merged) four or more video tracks and around three our four audio tracks.
After a while the footage becomes too choppy to watch at full res, and I usually drop to 1/2 then 1/4 resolution. WIth around two or three minutes of footage on the time line the video freezes and I need to render.
Herein lies the big problem: When I render such footage the bar tracks until 99% and then the machine powers down. Although I have autosave set to every 2 minutes and I manually save the project before I render, when the system powers back up the project will revert to the start point (footage disappears from the import folders and nothing appears in the time line) - Ive checked the scratch discs and the latest version always shows as the prevous save.
This is becoming frustrating and yesterday I decided to export the footage without rendering and again it crashed with three minutes of footage with two video and two audio tracks.
Is there a fix for this? Is my hardware insufficient and should I go to a 32gb RAM on a Mac Pro?
Any advice gladly received! This is for Windows, but it "seems" that you have a similar problem, so some reading that MAY help with ideas

I'd be grateful if one of you gurus shed some light on the possible cause.
Cheers and happy new year! That panic was not caused by third-party software, and it's the kind that is usually caused by a memory fault. If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications of the machine.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test, if applicable. -
I can't install Xcode - My iMac crashes
Until a few months ago, I had an old version of Xcode (I'm sorry, but I don't remember the version) that I downloaded from the Mac App Store. What I downloaded was like an installer for Xcode, rather than Xcode itself. When Mountain Lion came out, I tried to update to the new version of Xocde (now it was the actual Xcode that downloaded) and it downloaded as usual, but when installing, it made my iMac crash. I tried many times, making my computer crash every time, until it finally installed succesfully (honestly, I don't remember if I did something in order to install it succesfully… I think I deleted the older version, I'm not sure). After that, it worked fine and I thought the problem was solved. I had no problem whatsoever installing it in my new MacBook Air.
Today, Apple released a new update for Xcode. And the same thing as before, when it begins the installation, my iMac freezes for a second and then restarts itself. After the restart, Xcode appears "In Pause" or something like that in Launchpad. If I try to open it, I can downloading it again, but when it finishes downloading and begins the installation, it fails as I've described.
What could be the cause of this? And, of course, what can I do in order to fix it? A permanent fix, preferably.
Thank you.Same happening to me. I cannot complete Xcode installation because of a crash.
I cannot even run old Xcode, I get an alert about the program being upgraded.
I did a try to the direct installation via .dmg, but it ends up the same.
I suppose I am going to restore previous back up. -
iMac crashed, trying to use Time Machine backup. In Restore From:it only offers Macintosh HD on ..... (grayed). There are backups listed below. When I click on a current backup and click on continue I get a "Select a Destination" with Searching for disk, but nothing comes up.
I am connected to my Passport if that helps, but I think that is where it is getting the backup list.
Any help on how to proceed?
Thanks,Thanks for your help on this. I was trying to restore from a new drive. The problem I have is that Time Machine will not let me do so, so far.
When I go into 'Restore from Time Machine Back up) I can access the Time Machine HD ok. But then when I go onto next page (Select a Back Up) the 'Restore From' option only has the greyed out name of my crashed HD (this seems wrong?). If I continue the process to erase starts and then stops, message says:
An error occurred while adding a recovery system to the destination disk.
it only seems to want me to back up to my crashed HD which I have no intention of using -
