New 27"iMac Display (Arghhhhhh!)

New IMac 27" dual core purchased in November, duly arrived and was almost immediately sent back to Apple because it had a fault on the Firewire port. The second (replacement) machine arrived just before Christmas, all the software has been updated including the update for the display. The flickering screen has started recently, occasional totally black screen for a few seconds and NOW the screen moves altogether. The bottom 2/3" inches (including the dock) moves to the top of the screen, pushing the rest down. The dock is now 2/3" from the top of the screen with the top of the screen just below it. Its a split screen that l dont want. This last's for anything from a few seconds to several minutes.
I have tried to screen grab the problem but when l do it just shows the normal screen.
Any suggestions?
(Happy New Year to all)

Just an update - been on with Apple Support this morning - they are going to replace the machine, which is good news. So it will be the third machine in just over a month - third time lucky! Cannot fault Apple Support, very helpful and understanding, the only complaint is that l have to pay to ring them!
Happy New Year!

  • New 2012 iMacs display input from external source

Do the new 2012 imacs support input from external DisplayPort sources?

2012 iMacs can't be used as a monitor for Macs with Mini DisplayPort, but you can use a 27-inch iMac with Mini DisplayPort as a monitor for 2012 iMacs. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4469

  • New 27" iMac display allows input - without booting up??

The new iMac sounds very tempting as a non Mac user.
Just had one question. (Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.)
Can I use it purely as a display without the iMac booting up??
eg If I also purchase a Mac Mini at a later date can this be used for display?
This may serve future proof my purchase.
    The following suggests yes:
    "Mini DisplayPort.
The Mini DisplayPort lets you connect an external display, including the Apple LED Cinema Display, to your iMac. On the 27-inch iMac, the same port offers input, too. So you can connect any external source that has DisplayPort output — including a MacBook or MacBook Pro — and use your iMac as a display."
But if someone can confirm that will increase my confidence here
    Thanks

    Welcome!
The new models were announced only this week and may not be shipping yet. As everybody here are end users, I doubt anyone can confirm until they start arriving.
You would do better to watch the Intel Mac forum for user reports of the new models. The one you're now in is for the oldest iMacs with CRT monitors. Intel iMac forums are here:

  • How to drive a 30" Cinema Display from a new 27" iMac?

How do I drive a 30" Cinema Display from a new 27" iMac that has no obvious video out port? There are lots of ports, but nothing resembling or identified as a video out port. Is the very small hole in the cabinet by the power in port the thing I'm looking for? If so, the power/video adapter for the Cinema will not work as is. Do I need a Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter? I am completely uncertain about this, and could use solid advice. The AppleCare tech I spoke with today seemed not to have a clue. He said he would get back with me on this. He didn't.

    Overview
Every Mac with a Mini DisplayPort allows you to connect an external display or projector using an adapter. You can use an external display as your main workspace or to extend your desktop, or you can work in mirrored mode with a projector so you can view what your audience sees.
Use the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter to connect your Mac to a 30-inch display that includes a DVI connector, such as the 30-inch Apple Cinema Display HD, and enjoy the ultimate widescreen canvas with a resolution of 2560 by 1600 pixels.
Compatible only with Mac computers with Mini DisplayPort and Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later.

  • New 27" Thunderbolt Display Flickers when attached to new 27" iMac

I'm using a new 27" iMac. I require a dual-monitor configuration so yesterday I purchased a new 27" Thunderbolt display and plugged its built-in Thunderbolt cable into the Thunderbolt port of the iMac. I now have a huge desktop space that spans two monitors. With that in mind…
At least once every few minutes the new Thunderbolt display blacks out (i.e. flickers) for approximately one second. The symptom is very similar to what a Windows-attached display does when the screen resolution is changed. A quick Google search indicates others are experiencing the same problem although most complainants are using a MacBook or Mini, not an iMac.
Apple posted a firmware update for the Thunderbolt display a few days ago. I installed it successfully but the problem remains. Any advice?

    UPDATE:
I received a call back from a senior tech at Apple. The salient points are as follows:
    (1) Apple engineers are well aware of the problem.
    (2) They plan to release a firmware update for the display at some indeterminate time.
    (3) The fix for this problem will not be bundled into the forthcoming 10.7.2 Lion update.
Given that the flickering problem renders the Thunderbolt monitor virtually unusable as a desktop extension for a 27" iMac, combined with the fact that Apple has no idea when a fix for the problem will be available, my decision to return the monitor for a full refund is a virtual certainty.
AppleCare objected to my conclusion that the Thunderbolt monitor is "incompatible" with the iMac. Perhaps they're right. I'm not super technical so it's possible that I used the wrong term. It's a semantic distinction though. The bottom line is that Thunderbolt displays flicker when attached to a brand new 27" iMac and my personal opinion is that one is better off not purchasing this device until Apple fixes this major flaw.
Apple asked me to make a video of the Thunderbolt display manifesting the problem. Here it is.

  • Using FCP 7 - Can I connect two more displays to the new 27" iMac and have one as a display monitor?

I use Final Cut Pro 7 right now and am thinking about buying the new 27" iMac with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5 card. I have a 24" Apple Cinema Display with mini Display port cable. I also have one more Samsung display with DVI & HDMI. Can I connect both monitors to the iMac and be able to use one in FCP as a display monitor?

    Hello,
Maybe a device like the Targus USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Dual Video Adapter or StarTech USB 3.0 to HDMI an DVI Dual Monitor External Video Card Adapter would work?

  • Display on new 24" iMac?

I have read many of the complaints about the displays on the new 20" iMacs. For those of you with the 24" iMacs, do you have the same complaints? Are the LCDs on the 24" iMacs of comparable quality to the Apple Cinema Displays? I am considering buying a 24" iMac and your comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am a recent owner of a new aluminium 24" iMac in the UK. I've never used a Cinema Display so cannot comment on comparison.
Can agree with many comments here - very very bright, glare not distracting, crisp (but not as crisp as I'd like at close quarters)
    However BEWARE.
My first iMac24 delivery started misting up inside the glass panel a few hours after first boot and had to be replaced - see
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1073945
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1073643
I had left it 2 days to acclimatise to room temp before first boot too.
Also, the replacement iMac24 seems to the naked eye to be brighter on the left side of the screen than the right. At first I thought it was just psychological but I have checked with a camera light meter which seems to confirm that this is not an illusion - there seems to be a third of a stop difference in luminosity. I will check more but looks like this may also be going back. please i hope not. Has anyone else noticed this??
    24 vs 20 display
I have also compared several 24 and 20 models side by side and there is a huge difference in quality and viewing angles. The 20 display looked terrible.
The displays I've seen were probably not calibrated so not at their best but that shouldn't affect viewing angles and certainly doesn't account for the luminence gradient from top to bottom on the 20 screens which i have seen on every one so far - please note, the same problem affects my MacBook (screen darker at top than bottom) - I have an Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook, a replacement for my Core Duo which also had the same screen problem, and i have looked at macbook screens of all models in the US and UK and seen the same screen problem.
my advice: spend the extra for the 24 - i decided it was worth it. but watch carefully for the first day or two.
    happy computing

  • Display anomalies with new 20" iMac

I've had my new 20" iMac for little over a week now (2.4GHz) and in the last two days the display has started to exhibit some strange behaviour. The best way of describing it would be to compare it to a mobile phone screen that adjusts the display brightness based on ambient lighting. This does not appear to be connected with the Energy Saver setting "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before sleep". It occurs when the system has been on and in use for a little while and seems to settle down after a few minutes. Any ideas?

Having spoken with an apple customer service rep this evening, I was given the choice of repair or replacement of the new system, to which I chose a replacement (the system is two weeks old). However, they were unable to arrange this since there was a "technical fault" on the phone line trying to reach the sales support team while I was on hold (I assume they are outsourcing some call centre work to other countries, at least based on the accents). So I have to call back tomorrow to arrange my replacement. =)

  • New iMac display on/off

Does the new iMac have an on/off button for the display that is separate from the on/off power button for the iMac itself?
It would be nice to have the ability to turn off the display, when not in use, without having to powering down the iMac.

Sleeping the entire machine is one thing. Sleeping the display is a separate issue.
It seems there's currently no way to PERMANENTLY turn off the display backlight on an iMac. Setting a display time-out in the energy-saver settings or Ctrl-Shift-eject is supposed turn off the backlight, but if you have applications running on the machine, the display will turn itself back on again after a few seconds. (Try sleeping in a room with an iMac display on. Even displaying a black jpeg with the brightness turned down, you'll need to physically cover the screen!) The backlight will normally power down properly when there's nothing running on the machine, but if the machine weren't doing anything, I'd just sleep the whole machine, not just the display!! I want to sleep just the display/backlight when there are time-consuming applications running in the background, i.e., if the machine is encoding, running backups, syncing with cloud/server drives, etc.
This thread shows many other people having the same problem:
    http://mac.elated.com/2007/02/02/why-cant-you-turn-off-the-screen/
It seems this has been a problem for well over a year and I've not even seen Apple acknowledge the issue. IMHO, not being able to leave applications running with the backlight turned off is a critical design flaw. If I'd known this in advance, I'd have bought a Windows PC Now regretting my iMac purchase...

  • Can I run two thunderbolt display monitors off of my new 27" iMac?

Can I run two thunderbolt display monitors off of my new 27" iMac?

Yes, the new iMac has two Thunderbolt ports. Plus Thunderbolt can be daisy chained thru external Thunderbolt drives and displays that have multiple ports.
    For more info, see >  Apple - Thunderbolt: Next-generation high-speed I/O technology.
Although I'm not sure exactlly what Arrangement selections you will be offered in the Displays Preference, because I have not tested that setup myself...

  • New 27" iMac won't display above 1280 x 720

I just got my new 27" iMac but the max display size is 1280 x 720.
I went for the higher-end NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M. On first startup the screen is full of static and then is drops into the 1280 x 720. I tried zapping the PRAM but the same static problem happens.
I'm trying to get in touch with support but the support page is giving me error messages.

I restarted my system this morning, and the correct display rersolution is currently working.  No update was installed this morning.  I had the system up and running overnight setting up iTunes Match.  Can't explain it, but we are fully up and running now.  I am going to do some more testing with it and send an email to my support rep with this screen shot.  WOOT.  Display finally looks as amazing as I was promised.  Also did a Graphics Benchmark last night, and got results:
    FPS:
    100.8
    Score:
    2539
    Min FPS:
    45.3
    Max FPS:
    198.2
Which blew my 2 windows desktop machines with NVIDIA Desktop Graphics cards out of the water.  Now I can play with photos!

A flickering display sounds to me like a hardware problem.  Or does this only happen with a specific game? Of course your machine is still under warrantee so you could take advantge of it if you have a local apple store.

  • X-rite eye-one display 2 monitor calibration and new 27' iMac

    Hi,
I have been looking at the new 27" iMac to replace a 24" iMac Intel core 2 duo that I purchased last spring. The main problem being that I am a photographer/graphic designer and found out after I purchased this iMac that my x-rite eye-one display 2 monitor calibration system was rendered useless because the monitor brightness was way out of range (too bright) for the calibration software to work correctly.
My question is: Has anyone tried to use the x-rite eye-one display 2 with the new iMac 27" monitor? I understand that they may have fixed the monitor brightness problem, but now the new screen is lit by LED instead of LCD. Has this just presented a NEW problem that makes this color calibration system still useless or does it work despite the fact that the monitor light source has changed?
Thanks in advance for any info you can provide

The x-rite i1 display 2 won't work with any LCD lit panels. I've attended a x-rite training only six weeks ago and the guy explained the issues. So if you want to calibrate any LCD backlit screen, you have to get a more expensive thing -- maybe the Colormunki will do, but for sure the i1Pro will work. It's still a quite expensive upgrade.

  • Two BenQ external displays not working with new 27" iMac

I have a 27" iMac (newest model) and have been using it with a BenQ BL2710 monitor.  It's connected with a mini display port to display port cable.  It's been working great; I found that I had to uncheck the 'Displays have separate spaces' box in Mission Control, so I have the menu bar on the iMac'd display only.
Now, I have a 2nd BenQ BL2710 that I'm trying to hook up the same way, using the iMac's 2nd thunderbolt port.  The display powers up and all 3 screens look perfect.  The problem is getting the arrangement correct.  I have the dock on one display, the menu bar on another, and the mouse will only work on one or two of the displays, depending on how I change the arrangement.
I want the dock and the menu bar to be on the iMac's display ply, which is in the center.  Is there a trick to getting this done, or do I need a third party dock or other piece of hardware to get it to work?

I just answered my own question; apparently with two external displays connected, the dock has to be positioned on the bottom.  I had it on the right of the main iMac display.  Moving it to the bottom, and rearranging the position of the monitors in display preferences did the trick.
If anyone knows of a way to accomplish this without moving the dock to the bottom of the screen, I'd be interested.  I'd prefer it on the right side, if possible.
