New 3.0.2 slow

Safari 3.0.2 Windows is slower. Each new webpage takes far longer to load. FireFox in comparison is a speed demon.

I'm slowness, but in a different way, and on OS X (vs. Vista). Traditionally, Safari has been much faster than FFox on OSX. However, I'm seeing a variety of changes:
- After bringing to foreground, there is significant pause after beginning to type a new URL. (Beach-ball for a while).
- Same thing if a new tab is opened (beach ball delay after first character typed).
- Javascript execution appears modestly slower
If I didn't know anything else to guess, I'd suspect Apple left some debug scaffolding enabled in the Beta, and the scaffolding is causing delay when setting up some new type of context.
I'd love to roll back to Safari 2, but it's too much trouble.
Switching back to Camino until the 3.0.2 Beta is over. Sorry, Apple.

• Brand new macbook very very slow -- etrecheck help!

My brand new macbook pro is just annoyingly slow. lots of spinning rainbow wheel, eternally bouncing icons, uselessly slow search thing. i ran an etrecheck but have no idea what it means. i'm reluctant to go to the genius bar. this is a replacement macbook after the last one i bought required 5 trips to apple store in a month (maybe 12 hours total?) for a variety of problems. i just want this one to work at least half as well as the August 2008 macbook that it replaced... any help would be so appreciated.

Why is the iOS 6 so slow on the App Store?

Agree the new ios6 is much slower. I found this post by doing a search to find out if it was only me. I've done off & on & a soft reset. Neither helped. Everything seems to load much slower & hangs.
Maybe the new apps aren't optimized yet. However, I had one of my worst experiences with the Apple App Store. One would think they'd know how to optimize their own site & app.
I just hope it's not a bloat issue because the "upgrades" are not worth the performance trade offs to me.
Also, the iMaps are definitely not ready for prime time. I tried getting directions between two locations that were very mainstream and the app said it couldn't provide directions. I'll take Google without turn by turn, thank you. At least let us have a choice and let the best app win.

• New internet is extremely slow!

I had an engineer come out and install a brand new 2nd line in my home. The 1st line (that is managed by talk talk) gets 8 mbit down and 1 mbit up. Why is my new second line so slow compared to the 1st (The BT line gets 0.57 down and 0.04 up) I was promised at least 4 down and at the most 8.
The internet is now 4 days old and i have not seen any increase in the speed as at first i thought maybe this was normal but i guess not.
Whats going on?

• Brand new computer is super slow and makes a clicking noise

My brand new computer is super slow and makes a clicking noise. Any suggestions? I have a lenovo X120e, purchased it around 2 months ago but due to moving across the country just started using it, not so happy so far but I would be happier if it would speed up a bit. Every click takes a while to register especially during browsing on the internet.

Can you run the ThinkVantage Toolbox's HDD diagnostics?
Alternatively, try HD Tune's error scan and check it's SMART page for warnings.

• New OIF installation - Very slow response from OHS

Hi,
I've installed two instances of OIF 10.1.4.0.1 in order to create a test configuration to test XASP Attribute Sharing (i.e., we are not doing any other profiles).
Both OIF instances are using a separate instance of Sun Directory Server as its User Data Store, and both are using in-memory for Transient Data Store and have no Federation Data Store. Both OIF instances were installed similarly, using the "BASIC" installation choices, and are running on separate Redhat Linux servers.
The problem that we're seeing is very slow (10+ seconds to 30+ seconds) responses, even when we try to access a static HTML test page that we've placed in the OHS htdocs directory.
We've eliminated any networking problems as possibilities by a couple of tests that we've done, including shutting down the OHS and running a small, different test web server listening on port 7777. When we do that, response time for requests from that web server is almost instantaneous.
We are also seeing the same slow response when we try to access the test HTML page from the same server itself.
We have an SR open with Oracle, but so far, we've not been able to identify what the problem might be, so I'm hoping that perhaps someone else may have encountered this problem and have a resolution.
It is really puzzling because, as I said, this is a pretty vanilla default OIF installation, and it is doubly puzzling because even getting a tiny static HTML page is taking 10+ seconds. Also, I had installed OIF 10.1.4.0.1 on a Windows machine previously, and I don't see this problem on that earlier installation.
If anyone here has any insight into this problem, please let me know.
Thanks,
Jim

Hi,
I think I was able to temporarily eliminate this slow response problem. I think that the slow response problem is related to another problem that I posted about in the "Application Server - General" forum (see below, and Port 7200 conflict?
Jim
======= POSTED to Application Server - General forum ============
I think that I was able to temporarily work around this problem, plus another problem that I think is related (see: New OIF installation - Very slow response from OHS
What I did was to just comment out the "include" line for "dms.conf" in the Apache httpd.conf.
Doing that got rid of the "Address already in use" errors I was seeing in Apache error_log and also eliminated the slow response I was seeing from Apache/OHS (see that other post in "Identity Management" forum), BUT I am getting new errors about Apache not being able to find "htdocs/dms/Spy0".
I have the impression that dms is some kind of process monitoring system that Oracle has in 10gAS infrastructure? So, I have some questions:
1) What's the effect of dms not working?
2) Is it possible to just disable dms?
I hope that Oracle support can come up with a "real" fix for both problems, but in the meantime, as long as what I did doesn't break anything else besides dms, we can at least test the OIF stuff.

• Airport Drives Me CRAZY! New 802.11n Network Slower Than Old 802.11g/b

I've been using Macs since 1988 and consider myself an advanced user. However, every time I setup a new Airport wireless network or re-configure an existing one, I feel like a helpless newbie trying to figure out how to open a folder on my desktop. No matter how many times I read the manual or the help files or these forums, I can never grasp what seems like it should be a simple path from A to B to C.
Anyway, here's my current situation: I've been successfully (I think) running a 6 year old AP Extreme Base Station [AE] (in my home office addition) and 2 Airport Expresses [AX] (one AX roughly 15 feet from the base station--through sheetrock, and the second AX roughly 30 feet from the first AX--through sheetrock and some wooden stairs. (so roughly 45 feet from AE to 2nd AX). It wasn't the speediest thing going but it did the trick with older Macs.
I recently bought a MacBook Pro which supports 802.11n. I most often use this laptop at the point in the house furthest away from the AE (Base Station) The AE (Base Station) is in my home office connected to my MacPro desktop (see #1 below). In addition, the family iMac is also in that room furthest from the AE. Using the new MacBook Pro with the old 802.11/g/b network turned out to be painfully slow. I was experiencing the same slow network connection my family has complained about for years with their older Macs and 802.11g/b.
I decided it was time to upgrade the whole network, if only to speed up my MacBook Pro connection. Bought new 802.11n Airport Extreme (MC340LL/A) and 2 new 802.11n Airport Expresses (MB321LL/A). Setup did not go smoothly. Again, my normally competent Mac persona was reduced to a babbling three-year-old. Had three different Apple techs on the phone trying to help me through it. Got different, contradictory instructions from the last two. Finally got all three units working, only to find that not only does my MacBook Pro seem even more sluggish than when connected to the old 802.11g/b network, but my wife tells me web pages are taking at least twice as long to load as with the old network.
As concisely as I can lay this out:
*1. Airport Extreme (Base Station)*
Connected via Ethernet from its WAN port to my Comcast cable modem. One Ethernet (LAN) port on that AE is then connected via Ethernet to my Netgear 8-port Ethernet switch. Ethernet from switch to Ethernet port 1 on my MacPro. (MacPro does NOT have an Airport card because I forgot to order one. Also I confirmed that this setup was functional by connecting to the AE wirelessly with my MacBook Pro showing the name I'd given the new network prior to adding the two AX's to the mix).
Some Airport Extreme settings of note (all accessed via "Manual Setup" button):

SETUP/GOALS:
With Airport Extreme (Base Station) as the starting point, have the two Airport Express units with the strongest, fastest signal possible, provide Internet access (and file sharing, iTunes speakers capability) to three Macs (one older iMac, one older PowerBook and my new MacBookPro). Again, I believe my new MacBook Pro is the only one with 802.11n support, so I don't expect the other Macs to take advantage of the speed boost offered by the three new 802.11n devices.
+Any and all help with this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!+

{quote}With the AirPort Extreme, in the AirPort panel, Wireless tab, click on the button for "Wireless Network Options", check the box for "5 GHz Network Name", and enter a different network name. (That can be trivially different, such as the name of the main network suffixed with an underscore and the digit 5.) Once configured that way, connect your "N" gear to each network in turn to see if one is any better than the other. (If you're wondering what effect this would have, it allows segregating your "N" gear from the older gear to prevent the older gear from slowing down your network. However, distance and interference from things like walls may negate any advantage.){quote}
William: I was gone most of yesterday, but had a chance to implement your recommendations today. I added the 5 GHz network as you suggested, but in order to connect to that at all with my 802.n11 MacBokk Pro, I need to be within a few feet of the AE (base station). If I try to access that network even from the next room (well within reach of both the AE and the livingroom AX, I get one bar and "failure to connect" messages just trying to logon to that network.
However, I did some experimenting that (as of right now, anyway) resulted in much faster network access, not only from my MacBook, but also from the older iMac which is the furthest Mac from the AE. According to my wife, that iMac is "loading web pages faster than I've ever seen them!"
Here's what I did:
1. Moved all three units to places where it seemed they would have the least amount of interference with the clearest path from unit to unit, also raising the height of both AXs from about 2-3 feet from the floor to about 5-6 feet from the floor.
2. Changed one setting on the AE (base station): Wireless Tab > Wireless Network Options > Multicast Rate ---> Changed this from Low to High.
I have a feeling the location shifts made the real difference, but I will try changing the multicast rate back to "Low" just to see what happens.

• Any standard tests i can use to check my new iMac - it's slow

Hi
I bought a new 27-inch iMac and thought I had got one with decent specs and graphics card with lots of memory so that it would be fast when editing images and running several applications at the same time.
iMac
27-inch, Mid 2011
Processor 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4
However, I am really dissapointed. Simply scrolling through file list in a folder with lots of files and waiting for thumbnails to appear or clicking on an image to get a preview is very slow. I'm also sick of getting the spinning wheel when doing day to day work on the computer.
Rather than phone support and tell them anacdotal evidence that I'm not happy with my iMac and it seems sluggish, can anyone suggest a way to test my iMac performance so that I can give hard data to back up my opinion that the iMac is slow. I can monitor the computer using the activity monitor but what I'm looking for is something that can run a series of tasks/tests and produce a report - a benchmark tool of some sorts.
My older MacBook Pro seems much faster than the iMac and it would be good to run test on both to see how they compare:
MacBookPro8,1
Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Software Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Or is this simply Lion being a lot slower than Snow Leopard?
I appreciate any help or suggestions - I don't have a tech background so apologies for not using correct terminology
Kevan

Thanks for suggestion Radiation Mac but I should have said my mac isn't brand new and i've been using it for a couple of months - I think the problem is the finder after looking at this in more depth.
When using magic mouse and scrolling quickly down the list of files in column view in the finder the % CPU used goes from 20 - 65% - averaging around 40 (see first screenshot).
When stop scrolling and selecting file for preview in can take 5-10 seconds for the image to be displayed. When scrolling slowly the small icons to left of file can take a long time before they are displayed (see second screenshot).
I've been looking in forums and https://discussions.apple.com/message/8591346#8591346 suggests this has been a problem for a lot of users and changing the double click speed on mouse has helped lots of users - not sure how this works for magic mouse.
Am still looking for ways to speed this up - I deleted third party software such as virtualbox after reading this post https://discussions.apple.com/message/15605471#15605471
thanks AnaMusic for links - I'll start checking disks etc using the suggestions in your links

• Why did iOS 5 make my brand new iPod Touch so slow?

Recently downloaded the new iOS which, by the way, took nearly an entire night due to connection failure with host. Since then my iPod has been almost glitchy. I keep my apps pretty clean. I don't have a lot. And when I'm done with one I close it with the hold+home and "x" it down. However, still the new iOS runs slow. Will there be a new release coming soon with some bug fixes?

You may want to try a few things to try and deduce the problem:
1. back up your iPod touch with iTunes
2. remove an app that you suspect may be large or makes heavy use of background work (some apps may use the network a lot via the background scheduling services of iOS)
3. reboot, then repeat 2 until the problem disappears (you can blame the last app that you removed!)
4. if the problem does not disappear, try a restore to factory settings.
The iPod touch has limited working memory (half, in fact) compared to an iPhone 4(S) or iPad 2. While iOS should be able to handle these memory conditions gracefully, it also depends on how well apps respond to shutting down when iOS tells them to. Stubborn or rather large apps can cause the performance of your iPod to degrade momentarily until memory congestion settles.

• Brand new iMac running very slow!

I just purchased brand new iMac on January 2nd (the specifications are below). The computer seems to be running very slow just doing normal everyday tasks. I have barely even used the computer and the only installations I've done where the ones recommended from the app store. I saw I had an itunes update the other day and went to install, the computer sat there for 5 minutes before it did anything. After it installed the app store still had the badge icon #1 next to it as if it never installed. During the installation I was listening to pandora, I tried to turn down the music and it took about 45 seconds before it turned down. I finally tried to log out of my account and it took over 2 minutes to log out.
I haven't had the opportunity to mess with anymore since yesterday. I feel a brand new computer like this shouldn't be running this slow. Does anyone have any suggestions? I will probably be contacting Apple Support after I get off work and maybe even exchanging the computer for a new one.

If you are referring to this icon for the App Store:
the red numeral 1 is to tell you there is an update available. It may even have started to download, and been paused.
As far as your Mac's performance goes the Apple Store is the place to take it. You have paid for a one year warranty, and of course there is the option to return it within 15 days. Good luck.

• HELP! New OS runs very slow

My Specs:
Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 9 GB
Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MP11.005C.B08
I use FCP for editing
I've had the previous OS 10.4, everything ran perfect! Now after installing the new OS 10.5, everything, and I meant everything from all my software to Safari runs extremely slow. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem? I have over 126 Gig of disk space left on my main drive and over 700 gig on my other drives.
Thanks,
Lisa

Hello Lisa, your system is quite impressive. You have plenty of Ram (9GB), 2.66Ghz. My suggestion would to repair disk permissions from your utilities folder, zap the Ram, Maybe repair the drive from the Leopard disk and look at the activity monitor too see what is going on. I would bet it is nothing serious, only a bad setting. Try these steps and post back.

• Our new AppleTv is really slow... even when the movies were downloaded to the computer, which we accessed from the Apple Tv it took an hour to load a 45 minute video! Is that normal?

Our new Apple Tv seems to be way too slow to be normal. We had tv shows from the Apple Store saved to our computer, and when we played them through Apple Tv, we found out that it would take more or less an hour to load! It was only a 45 minute show, and admittedly it was HD, but I still find this ridiculous. Is this normal, or can I fix the problem? Please help!

NO its not normal. Apple tv is so key on internet connection. How far away is your router? Hardwire is obviously the best, but with me for example, my apple tv is a room over from my router. Really close with no other devices being used at the time. It can be a number of factors. I run a macbook, xbox, ipad, and apple tv off my router with no problems. I have a good router, good location(router), and not all running at the same time sucking bandwith. Check this out:

• New Logic Board = Significanlty Slower Mac

Recently I had my Macbook Pro shipped off for repairs for a number of problems I've had with it, and they ended up replacing the battery, superdrive, logic board, and display wiring. Since I've gotten back, my mac is noticeably slower. Boot up time has increased, And there is a one or two second delay in doing simple tasks like right clicking on the desktop and having the menu pop up, or double clicking a buddy in iChat to bring up a new chat window. I've used this computer for several hours a day, nearly every single day for the past 2 years, so I am very familiar with how long it takes to do different tasks. Any ideas as to to fix this?
I very reluctant to have to send it in again, because I use it for work, and I had to miss a week's worth of work to send it in the first time, and I can't afford to do that again.

Could you start Activity Monitor Application and see if anything is using lots of CPU or memory? Also could you open Terminal.app and type 'sudo dmesg' without quotes and then post the output?
One other thing to check is to go to System Profiler (Apple Menu Icon -> About This Mac -> More Info) and then check the status of the disk drive - it should say SMART Status verified.
If some process is hogging the CPU it may explain the slowness. What 3rd party software do you have installed?

• Why is the new iTunes 7 SSSOOOOOOOOOOO slow?

iPad running slow? How to speed up a slow iPad

If You Think iOS 7 Feels Slow Here’s How to Speed It Up
http://osxdaily.com/2013/09/23/ios-7-slow-speed-it-up/
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.
