I just purchased a new 3tb Seagate drive to replace a 2tb drive in an external USB enclosure, I can access, partition and format it using Parallels but can't even see it in Disk Utilities on Mac OS X 10.6.8...????!!!!!
Any Help?
I beleive it has a Jmicron chip in the USB to ATA BRIDGE....

More info: the USB to ATA/ATAPI bridge can be seen in system profiler....
The drive works, no problem through parallels...  ***?

  • My internal hard drive no longer boots.  Boots just fine in external usb enclosure.

My internal hard drive no longer boots when inside my laptop.  The drive boots just fine in external usb enclosure.  It is also fully recognized when internal (as seen in single user mode, recovery mode or while booting from another drive).
    I have tried:
    with disk utilities
    •fixing permissions
    •repairing disk
    in single user mode
    •fsck -fy
    zapping the pram
removing ram and zapping the pram
Any suggestions or diagnostics would be appreciated.

Can't believe I spent days reformating my hard drive, restoring it, getting another hard drive... and it was all a cable that failed.  I wonder what can make an internal cable like that fail (seems like the least likely part of all to fail).

  • External USB enclosure for DVD Multi IV drive?

I replaced the DVD Multi IV drive (FRU 45N7451) that came with my T430s with a SATA Hard Drive Bay 9.5 mm Adapter III (FRU 43N3412) to hold a 2nd HD.
Now what to do with the DVD drive? The physical interface isn't the standard SATA connector that's used on HDs. Is there an external enclosure available for this drive from Lenovo? I don't need a DVD drive very often but for when I do it would be a lot more convenient to plug it into a USB port than to swap UltraBay devices.

To answer my own question, yes. I ordered this item and it arrived this morning. I now have a USB-connected external DVD drive that works with both my T430s and X61s, as well as other PCs. The flexibility that this gives me, e.g. to put another HD in the T430s, is well worth the small cost of the case. A single USB connection is sufficient to power the DVD drive so there's no additional cables or AC power supplies to worry about either.
The Lenovo DVD drive went into the case smoothly with the following minor issues:
    1. There is a small black plastic spacer screwed into the back of the DVD drive which I presume is used to keep the drive firmly in position when mounted inside the T430s. I had to remove that piece in order for the drive to fit in the case. I'll have to remember to reattach it if I ever want to put the DVD drive back into the T430s.
    2. The new thinner DVD drives now being installed on s-line ThinkPads leave a small gap between the top of the drive and the top section of the case. I stuck some foam spacers using double-sided tape on the inside of the top section of the case in order to keep the drive in position.

  • Connecting external FAT32 drive in USB enclosure

I've got a PC whose mobo finally bit the big one, and a couple of hard drives now just hanging out. I bought an Acomdata Samba USB Enclosure Kit for one of them (Western Digital 250GB EIDE), and attached it to my Macbook 13". Disk Utility recognizes the physical drive ("250GB WDC WD25 00JB-00REA0 Media"), but the partition that it shows ("disk1s1") will not mount. No indication of why in the message that comes up, nor in the Console logs.
I have tried switching the jumpers on the WD before putting it into the enclosure, giving it various status in the master/slave combos. None of them worked.
    Any insight is much appreciated!

    First, it wasn't a FAT32 disk, it was a Windows_LFS... but wow, I can't believe this actually worked. Here's what I did.
    1. Booted up WinXP Pro on the MacBook via Parallels.
    2. Enabled the USB device in the Parallels Device menu.
    3. Let WinXP find the disk and install it.
    4. In the Disk Manager in WinXP, I went to assign it a drive letter. It showed up as a "Foreign disk", so I right-clicked and told it to import it. It did so, and assigned it a drive letter.
    5. It then was a drive in My Computer, so I right-clicked it and chose "Sharing."
    6. I shared the drive on the network, and it's now available in the OS X Finder as an available volume on the networked (virtual) machine.

  • Seagate drive quandary:  "USB device is drawing too much power"?

I have a year-old Seagate external hard drive that when I plug in to a 2011 MacBook Air, it started saying something to the effect of "your USB device is drawing too much power and had been disable in order to aboud damage..."  I had been using this drive for some time, and this just started a few days ago.  I tried plugging it into a USB hub and directly into a USB on the MBA with the same result.  So I plugged in into my brand new 2012 MacMini and got the same messgae.  My initial conclusion:  the drive is dead.
So I buy a new USB 3.0 Seagate compact external drive, plug it in and get the same error on my MBA and on the MacMini.  If that isn't odd enough, I have the exact same Seagate model plugged into my MacMini as the backup drive with no problems.  Any ideas??  Maybe I received a DOA drive by coincidence?
UPDATE:  Tried the new drive on a Win7 PC and it recognized it fine.  Why would my 2011 MBA and 2012 MacMini not recognize the new drive?

  • Move Internal Drive to USB Enclosure? Interface?

I upgraded my unibody to a 500 GB drive and want to put the previous 320 GB into a USB enclosure. I purchased a laptop 2.5" HDD enclosure with Serial ATA connectors on the inside and a USB 2 connector on the outside. But the hard drive I pulled out of the Macbook Pro has weird chip connectors. What type of connector is this and why is it listed as an SATA drive when it doesn't have SATA connectors? The System Profile listed it as a standard SATA drive. I'm a bit confused as to what kind of enclosure I need to get now.

Derek, where did you buy your enclosure, and, considering the mixup, would you recommend them? I'm considering a SSD, and should I buy one, I'd like to place my current drive in an external enclosure for backup purposes, etc.
    Thanks!

  • Will a new 320gb hard drive work on a mac book pro 3,1

purchased new 320GB hard drive for a mac book pro 3,1.  Old HD has link speed of 1.5GB, new HD transfers at 3GB.  New HD will not boot up.  Can link speed be changed on mac book pro 3,1.

Have you already initialized/partitioned the new drive? If yes, you've installed the operating system on it, and it doesn't boot? You've tried a safe-mode boot (hold the shift key when booting)?

  • Network Drives/External USB Drives?

If I have a NAS box on the network or a couple of external USB drives connected to computers on my network, will Network Magic "see" them and allow me to share folders on them with the rest of the network?

Thanks for the prompt reply.  I was hoping that since the USB drive will be mapped to a drive letter that it could be shared.  But I guess not.  I may just invest in a NAS interface like the one from Iomega for my USB drives.
    Hi Cartaphilus1946,
What type of Interface is being employed by the USB Drives?
If SATA, you could move all the existing files and folders onto the computer, then buy either the D-Link DNS-321 or D-Link DNS-323 which has a built-in FTP Server. They use SATA Hard Drives.
    Just a thought.

  • Will my imac superdrive work ok if i put it in an external usb enclosure?

    Hi!
I have an optibay caddy to put in my iMac 27" so I can add a second SSD to my system... Question... Will OSX still recognise the superdrive and use it as normal if i put it in a slot loading external USB caddy?
Thanks for any advice in advance.
    Mike

It may. It could. It should in theory. But none of us can guarantee it will. You will just need to give it a try. I would get a caddy that is guaranteed by its developer to work with a Mac.
    Update -
Looking on the Optibay site, I see that they include a caddy for your Superdrive, with the Optibay, to do exactly this solution. So that should definitely work for you. They have developed it to do so.

  • Can a 10.6.8 drive boot from an external usb enclosure on a 2013 mac mini running natively on 10.8.3?

I primarily use a 2011 MBP running 10.6.8 as my primary work computer. My wife also has a MBP that runs on 10.7.X. I'm able to take the drive out of my MBP, put it in an external enclosure and boot it from my wife's MBP. However, on the Mac Mini I just bought yesterday (10.8.3), it does not boot. It just hangs on the white/grey Apple logo screen.
Is 10.6.8 no longer compatible to boot on a machine that is 2 years newer? Does anyone have any experience with this issue? Thanks in advance.

So in order to make this work, I'd have to:
    1. upgrade my 2011 MPB to Mountain Lion? Is that even possible? It looks like Apple is doing a free OS X upgrade to Mavericks and 10.6.8 is included: http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/
However, this worries me a bit because of software compatibility. Not sure what it's going to do to all my software.
    2. Buy an older pre-mountain lion Mac Mini.
    3. Virtual machine. I'm not a fan of using Virtual machines. It eats up too much RAM.

  • Installing windows with 2 3TB Seagate drives in raid 0

Hi there, I have a MSI 990FXA-GD80 motherboard that I just recently purchased. As part of my upgrade I also got 2 Seagate 3TB drives to put into Raid 0 to function as my boot drive.
I'm unable to figure out how to get windows installed. I Setup the raid array under legacy mode to configure the array and then set it to start the array using the "UEFI driver". After that I set the boot priority so that it boots into the EFI shell. I selected my DVD-ROM drive that had the windows 7 x64 install disk and the BOOTX64.EFI file from the shell. From there I booted the install disk and used the amd raid driver from the msi motherboard page then followed the prompts until I got to unallocated space then hit next. At that point it just comes up saying it couldn't format the disk and gives an error code.
Everything in the manual for the motherboard points to it supporting booting from a GPT drive but I'm unable to get it to work. Maybe it doesn't support booting while in raid?
    Here are the system spec's
    OS: Windows 7 Pro x64
    CPU: AMD FX-8320
    MOtherboard: MSI 990FXA-GD80
    RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600Mhz
GPU: Nvidia 660 Ti x3 SLi
    Hard Drives: 2x Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001 3TB 7200rpm Raid 0 4k sectors with 64KB strips

If you are installing in UEFI mode for win 8 don't use Legacy. You will create the raid array inside uefi bios. Then boot to your install media in win 8 mode, i find it helpful to use a usb stick for the install media and also include all raid drivers on the stick. Load the newest drivers using f6.
The VD may need to be reformated using diskpart to GPT for this to work in Win 8 mode. (I haven't tried this in raid mode myself)
Here is a guide if you need such.

  • How do I reformat my Seagate Expansion external hard drive so I can use it for Mac

I recently purchased a 3TB Seagate® Expansion® external hard drive for PC. My plan is too reformat it so that I can use it, but it has been acting wierd on me. It says on Disk Utility that it is 4 gbs but I have a 3TB one. Im on OSX mavericks by the way. Thanks!

    akostainsek,
the diskutil output shows that the disk has no Apple-recognized partitioning. Try the following commands in Terminal to establish the partitioning, and to see if it takes effect:
    diskutil eraseDisk JHFS+ Seagate disk1
    diskutil list
Again, please include in your reply the full output from these commands.

  • I have a G4 Quicksilver running 10.5.8. Because the oS is on a small hard drive I coied the folders from that HD to a much larger drive via an external  USB drive enclosure. I then installed the larger drive as an internal in the G4, but it does not show

I have a G4 Quicksilver running 10.5.8. The OS is on a small HD  with no room for adding any info or applications, so I have copied the OS to a much larger HD in an external USB enclosure. I dragged each folder from the small drive to the larger drive. I can access the applications when the large drive is set as an external drive, but when I installed it internally it would not show up on the Start Up Disc utility and I can not boot from it. Did I do something wrong copying the OS? Can anyone tell me how to boot from the larger drive? Thanks

If your machine doesn't support large drives natively (Quicksilver 2002 and later) then doing as you are doing may lead to disaster.
If files are placed on a large drive and those files extend beyond the 128 GB limit of the controller, the first time the drive (internally) accesses data beyond the 128 GB region, the machine will crash and data loss a likely result.

  • External USB Drive hangs Disk Utility when trying to Format

    Hello Everyone,
I have a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300gig hard drive in an enclosure connected to my iMAC via USB. The drive was previously used on an Win XP pc and worked fine. I want to format it and use it as a backup for my MAC. When I plug in the drive, OS X says that it can't read the drive and asks if I want to initalize it. I go ahead and select 1 partition Extended Journaled and hit go. The Maxtor spins up for a few mins and then the colour wheel shows up and the Disk Utility shows not responding and the light on the Maxtor goes off. I have to force quit to get the Disk Utility to shutdown. I can format and parition the drive no problem on the XP pc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I also had a problem initializing and partitioning a new Seagate Barracuda 400GB drive with the NexStar GX (NST-370GX) external USB enclosure as described above. Neither my G4 MacBook Pro or my Mac Mini Dual core could initialize or partition the enclosure/drive. I could however hook the enclosure up to my XP machine, format it using NTFS, and access (read) the drive on my Mac Mini just fine. I didn't check it on the laptop though after formatting it using XP. This still was unacceptable.
After doing some searching online, I discovered this post on 123macmini.com:
    http://www.123macmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2629
where the post points out that the NexStar GX enclosure is a rebranded Macpower M9-LX. Then I discovered on the Macpower site:
    http://www.macpower.com.tw/products/hdd3/m9/m9lx
that the enclosure is not compatible with any Seagate Barracuda drive greater than 160GB. Doh!
After swapping out the Barracuda drive for a 300GB Western Digital drive I could then initialize, partition, and use the enclosure on my Mac Mini without any problem.
    I was using OSX 10.4.7
I hope this helps others out there with the same configuration.

  • Errors on external USB drive

I'm trying to track down the cause of failed backups to a brand-new 300Gb Seagate drive in a external USB <-> SATA enclosure.
I observe these errors in Retrospects verification phase.
    These errors could
    - be 10.4.6 not playing well with external USB drives - that the new drive is essentially DOA
    - that the enclosure is a dud.
    - reflect an inability on Retrospect's part (e.g. unable to work properly with USB drives on 10.4.6)
I've asked on the EMC Retrospect forum for their take on this, buts that's a very slow forum...
Any pointers are welcome. I strongly prefer not to have to buy commercial solutions; after all, the "fix" may be to ask the supplier to take his drive back and refund me and I wouldn't want to spend if that's the case. Command-line solutions are fine.
The data can be correctly backed up to another external drive (via Firewire) so its not the source data. Its not the specific USB port: tried other ports, etc. At one point there were some errors reported by Disk Utility, but I've repaired these and it now claims all is well.
Dual G5/2Ghz/4GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   ExternalUSB enclosure; 300Gb Seagate SATA drive

I see my question is so popular, I'm left composing a soliloquy... :-/
Anyway, an upgrade to OS X 10.4.7 (from 10.4.6) seems to have put this right, after a lot of different testing exercises and reading. At least for the first time in many attempts I've been able to run a sizeable backup using Retrospect without the verification pass yielding hundreds of errors.
It would seem, at least for Retropsect users, that OS X 10.4.6 needs to be avoided if you intend backing up to an external USB drive--?
