New, 500GB HDD showing only 320GB usable

Just upgraded my standard 7200rpm 320GB hard drive to a new 500GB hard drive. I duplicated the drive and now the 500GB hard drive has only 1 partition the size of 320GB. When I try to drag the partition size in Disk Utility, it states the following error:
Partition failed with the error:
MediaKit reports partition (map) too small
Any idea how I can utilize the entire 500GB space?

Not sure what that means, but if the most current data is on your Mac:
1. Create a Lion Recovery Disk Assistant (You need a 1GB Thumb Drive)
2. D/L CCC and Clone your 500GB Macintosh HD to the 320GB external HD (that you put in an enclosure)
3. Disconnect the 320GB HD
4. Boot from the Thumb Drive created in 1.
5. Select Disk Utility
6. Partition the 500GB HD to 1 Partiton. (Select G.U.I.D. in [options]
7. Quit Disk Utility
8. Select Reinstall OS X Lion
9. When asked if you want to transfer Data from another Mac or Time Machine or Other Volume
Connect thd 320GB External HD (the Clone)
Select Time Machine or Other Volume

I am trying to upgrade my macbook pro unibody hdd from 320gb to 500 gb but after replacing hdd when I try to install new os on it it's giving me multilanguage error message "You need to restart your computer. Hold Down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." after restart same message appear agein.

Here is the thing.
1. I have macbook pro mid 2010 with 320gb hdd snow leopard 10.6.7 installed on it.
2. I want to upgrade from 320gb hdd to brand new blank 500gb.
3. Now when I replaced hdd and tried to install new os from original Snow Leopard OS 10.6.6 DVD it's gives me an error. Now As I have Snow Leopard 10.6.0 in Image i tried to install os using this image after formating but still it's giving me same error.
4. Now I do have external enclosure and another macbook pro 2.26ghz...So I did connect my 500GB to my friends macbook pro as an external HDD and installed snow leopard 10.6.6 on it succesfully on external 500gb HDD. Tested and Boots fine on my friends macbook with same 500gb hdd that gives me an error
5. So Now I plug in that 500GB HDD (Snow leopard 10.6.6 already installed on it) to my macbook pro but its gives me a same error......I tried external and internal both plug in but same error.
6. hdd, memory, hdd cable and dvd...all this have no issue but still getting error message.

500 gig Western Digital My Book HDD shows only 298.1 gig

I have 2 of these drives....both premium versions. I've tried both firewire and USB, and no difference. Any ideas? (even doing the math, I should still be showing 465 gig)

I think since these are PC based drives, they should be accessed by a PC first. Otherwise it should have been reformated to respond/work with the MAC OS. O have on, which came wuh an ethernet connection to be a network drive. Thus far I have successfully saved (and retrieved) both PC, and Mac files.

Shows only 929M of RAM usable.....

Have over 4G of RAM but showing only 929M usable. Running win7-32 [so it should only show about 3.5G usable] on HP Envy dv7-7232CL. Origianlly came with win8. Any help????

How do I get my new Mac to show all itunes music that shows up on my PC?

My PC shows some 600 songs when I plug in my ipod, however when I plug in the ipod to my new mac, itunes shows only the 70 songs that I purchased--not the ones that I put on the ipod from old CD's etc.--many of which are no longer available to download. Obviously, I need all 600 songs to show on itunes in order to create playlists, delete songs, etc. Apple says that ONLY reinstalling all songs will work. Any other suggestions?

You will need a program such as Senuti or PodWorks to transfer the other tunes back to the Mac.
The iPod is one way affair except for purchase tunes/video.

Mac Book Pro on Mountain Lion HDD shows almost full when it is not

Hi,
I am using a MacBook Pro End 2011, with an HDD of 500 GB.
There is a partition on the HDD, and one side runs Mac, and the partition is for Windows 7 via Parallels (about 125 GB).
SInce about the last 10 days, my HDD shows only 10 GB of free space, and I think it should be having much more free space.
My data is about 105 odd GB, and the folder "Applications" shows about 7.5 GB used.
I fail to understand how the HDD can be out of space.
I tried using Disk Utility, and the option to "Repair".
While it runs and repairs some permissions, it says that some permissions cannot be replaired and that they have been modified, but the problem does not resolve.
Also , the machine feels a bit slower than before.
Help much appreciated.

I recently installed some add-on Safari enhancement type things (like Safari Enhancer and SafariStand) while at the same time, checking out Firefox as well. It was LATE at night and I do NOT recall what I did but I brought up some pageview function that took the webpage I was currently viewing and opened a new page that showed ONLY THE IMAGES of the page. For example, on this page that you are currently viewing, the image-only pageview would ONLY show the Apple icon tab above and the "Store" and "iPod + iTunes" and ".Mac" tabs above as well as the Logout, My Settings, My Posts, My Subscriptions, etc icons from the page....NO text or links or fields to fill in.
PROBLEM is that I CANNOT remember what I did to show that pageview of only images!! Actually I do not know if I did this in Safari or FIREFOX!!
I was wondering if anyone was familiar with this image-only pageview option?? Or whether it was in Safari or Firefox and how to bring it up again??

I want to clone my existing original equipment 500GB HDD to a new 1TB replacement HDD. How to?

G'Day,
I'm gettin too big for my old 500GB HDD, so I bought a new 1TB HDD.
Now, I have the set of rescue disks I made when I first fired up my Compaq Presario CQ57-105TU Laptop. I could use them & fresh install all the original computer software & OS, but then I would have to start from scratch & re-install all the software I have installed, besides redoing all the tweaks & modifications I 've made to the Windows 7 OS since day one---over a year ago.
Really not how I want to spend the next week or two +/-.
I'd like to clone the orig. 500GB HDD & all its contents to a new 1TB HDD.
Sounds like where I want to go, but for 1 small issue. I've been told that if I do just that I will have about 500gb of new available space, but I was also told I won't be able to create any new drive partitions on the new HDD because of some way the existing partitions on the original HDD are created.
1. Is that true?
2. If not, where can I find a failsafe procedure for accomplishing the clone, & then creating 2 new partitions to cover the free space on the new drive.
3. If so, is there a work around? If there is what is the procedure (plse don't give me brain cramps with techno lingo..tnx)
Some additional information that might be important.
At present my HDD has this configuration:
Now that   ( Q ) Local Disk     Is diferent. It shows 0 bytes available & 0 bytes Used, & I dont have access to it.
My wife's computer...a different Laptop model CQ62... also has the same drive,
but hers is labeled as Microsoft Office 2010 Starter...also 0 bytes available & used---also no access to it, & like below, not showing in Dmgt.

Ok....it is done!!
I used my friends HDD CLONING DOCKING STATION exactly like this one, but he purchased it 2 years ago from a different seller.
All I did was take my Original 500GB Drive & placed it into slot A (the front slot - Master) & I placed the new Toshiba 1TB Drive into slot B (the second slot behind Slot A..the middle - Slave). I turned the power on the Box. I waited till the drives spun up & were ready, & then all I did was press the red button on the Box...
The 25% light started flashing & the cloning began....
About 40 minutes later the 50% light started flashing & the 25% light stayed steady.
This meant that 25% of the process was done, & it was proceeding to 50%. \
This sequence continued until eventually all the lights were on steady (25% thru 100%) which meant the clone was complete.
I estimate it took about 2 hours & 15 minutes to clone completely.
I shut down the Box by turning off the power. I then removed both drives.
I carefully installed the new drive into the notebook computer, & reinserted the battery, & I plugged in the notebook's power supply/charger/adapter.
I then crossed my fingers & hit the notebook's power button.
Within seconds my notebook was booting up as always. I just had to check to make sure I really did install the new drive...& yes the one on the desk was the original, which definitely meant that the drive booting my notebook was indeed the new drive I just cloned to.
My notebook booted flawlessly!! without a hitch. Exactly as it always had.
I used My Computer Management Administrative tool--Disk Management & made a simple volume for the 450+ GB of free space, assigning the next available drive letter -- in my case Drive (F) & I named it as well.
Everything worked perfectly, I can read & write to the new partition/volume. As I noted earlier, I probably wont be able to boot from anything but my (C) Drive, but that's fine for me.
So, what did I learn?
Well, firstly, my Compaq Presario CQ57-105TU can upgrade to 1TB of HDD without any modifications.
Using the Cloning method I did definitely saved me at least 1 full weeks of re-installation work if I chose the Fresh install method using the Backup/Rescue Disks I created when the computer first was started way back when.
Outside of the 2+ hours of time it took to clone the drive, the 15 +/- minutes to originally remove & reinstall the drive, & the time it took to assign the new free space a drive letter (all of 5-10 minutes) the procedure was a clear cut simple one, which I know could have been done otherwise, but not as simply as the method I chose.

I'm so glad all your fears & roadblocks were not realized, & in the end it was possible to accomplish the task contrary to our initial concerns---matter in factly with the greatest of ease.

Ouch, well there is a problem.
This is the stack of partitions on your old drive
EFI (hidden)
Lion (50GB say)
Bootcamp (50GB say)
Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
This is the same stack on your new drive imaged from the old one.
EFI (hidden)
Lion (50GB say)
Bootcamp (50GB say)
Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
Emtpy Space (100GB say)
This is what you want
EFI (hidden)
Lion (100GB say)
Bootcamp (100GB say)
Lion Recovery Partiton (hidden)
EFI has to be at the top of the drive and Lion Recovery has to be at the bottom of the drive.
And you only have four partitions.
You can't move the Lion Recovery Partition or Bootcamp partiton, however you can expand the Lion Partition into empty space below it. (but can't delete or move the Lion Recovery partition)
Your Duplicator duplicated perfectly, too perfectly Likely would work with same sized drives/partitions.
This is what your going to need to do.
You need to move the Bootcamp partition to a blank external drive using WinClone and disconnect. This is so you have two backups of it. (one on your old 500GB drive)
You will need a drive enclousre or IDE/SATA to USB adapter cable for the older 500GB drive and option key boot from it. (some enclosures can't be booted from so check first Other World Computing is good place to ask)
Download the free Carbon Copy Cloner, grab any new files off the new 750GB internal drive to the old 500GB your booted from.
Open Apple's Disk Utility and Erase with Zero option the entire internal 750GB drive and let it rip, this will map off as many bad sectors and improve reliability.
Now use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the 500GB Lion + Lion Recovery Partitions to the internal 750GB, it will "fix" things and place Lion Recovery at the bottom of the drive where it belongs, give all the extra space to OS X Lion.
Next your going to have to follow WinClones instructions to restore your Bootcamp, likely you will have to recreate the Bootcamp partition first (in Bootcamp) to the size you want and then clone. Likely Winclone may "fix" Windows to recognize it's in a new larger partition now. I don't know you'll have to check as I haven't used it.
When Bootcamp creates the partition it will place it near the bottom next to the Lion Recovery Partition.
As you know you will have to re-validate Windows with Lord Redmond or it expires as you changed the hardware.

Thanks Carolyn. I understand that my usable capacity may be less than 8gb for all those reasons.
But here is my problem.
I did a restore. The free capacity was then shown as 6.3gb, then I added 75mb on mb4 files. The free capacity showing was then 5.3gb. I know that these files are approximately 75mb because I have them on my older 3G iPod touch and they are working quite fine and don't take up more than the expected room.

Cloning 320GB to 500GB HDD

Hey guys. I have a x220 with a 320GB HDD, I want to upgrade to a 500GB HDD but I don't want to manually reinstall everything.
I've got 3 partitions:
1. Local Disk(*) (looks like some system partition or something, 1.1GB, with 348MB used)
2. C: (the main partition) (281GB)
3. Lenovo recovery Q: (15,6GB)
What I want to accomplish is that after the upgrade, the C: partition would extend to the amount of new space available.
I have, at my disposal, a desktop PC where I can connect both the new and the old HDD to perform the cloning. Now all I need is to know how to do that.

I don't know about Clonizilla' capabilities as I used Acronis s/w which can clone the drives with different size. All you need in that case is to select manual mode for partitions resizing (instead of auto i.e.proportional mode). Then select System_DRV and Lenovo_Recovery partitions and leave their size as original. All remaining drive space will be occupied by partition C:.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)
