New 500GB WD hard drive on white MacBook - cannot install start up disk

I have just replaced the 60gb hitachi HD with a new western digital WD5000BEVT-24A0RT Scorpio 2.5" SATA internal 500gb HD, on my white 2007 MacBook. After inserting the OSX 10.5 leopard CPU drop-in DVD, I accessed the disk utility app and formatted the drive to 1 partition as GUID, Mac OS extended (Jornaled), but then after opening the 'startup disk' utility, no drives could be identified as suitable. Since then I have explored other partitioning formats, and tried using osx 10.4 DVD with no luck. Curiously, when in the 'disk utility' app I restored a partition as the leopard DVD (ie source = 'MATSHITA...', destination = a HD partition) I can start the MacBook up off the HD with no DVD but it still won't let me actually put OSX on a volume...
What can I do to this HD to be able to put OSX on it?

Startup Disk utility will typically only show you drives that the system can boot from. While I may be misunderstanding what you have said, it sounds like you have partitioned and formatted the drive. At this point, there isn't anything on the drive to boot into and it will not be available as a Startup Disk. You will need to install your OS onto the drive from your DVD before it will be available as a startup disk.

  • Is it possible to remove my hard drive from the Macbook and install it in a new Macbook Pro?

I currently have a 2009 Macbook and am wanting to upgrade to a new Macbook Pro.  I have upgraded my hard drive in the macbook to a 500gb and have a duel boot with Windows 7 installed with Boot Camp along with other software that I do not want to lose.  Is it possible to remove my hard drive from the Macbook and install it in a new Macbook Pro?

A much better solution is to hook your two Mac together and the first time you start the new Mac and it asks if you wish to recover data from another Mac, answer yes. This will invoke Setup Assitant which will do the job for you but intelligently.
I know because I just used Setup Assitant. It worked like  a charm.

tried on a different mac. The same problem exists.
If that is the case, its extremely unlikely you have a bad USB cable on the seagate, rather as I mentioned earlier a bad SATA bridge card.
If the Seagate 1TB USB external wont open on either Mac and youve verified same (try a diff. USB cable if you have one however this is nearly never the case),....then to get the data off that HD (unless it is dead which is also extremely unlikely),......then you would need to extract the HD from its case and insert same into either a HD dock or USB HD enclosure.
8 out of 10  seemingly dead inopperable 1-3+ year old external HD are perfectly fine, rather the cheap 50 cent SATA bridge card fries and dies (alas)
reply back if you need help in extracting same.

Be sure to start your iMac using its original grey System Install DVD: Insert that disc and start your Mac while holding the d key. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen select Disk Utility and format the hard disk. Select "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)".
    Then, install OS X.

  • How can I install OSX on a new third-party hard drive in my Macbook Pro?

I'll start off by saying that I bought my MBP (Mid 2009, 13 inch) used two years ago, and the seller never thought to mention that he had installed a third party hard drive not long before selling it to me... First problem.
Anyway, the hard drive crashed. I'm installing a new hard drive, but I'm worried about getting back to having Mountain Lion. I'm confused by the process - Some say I can start by ordering a retail copy of Snow Leopard on Amazon, some say I need the OS disc that originally came with the computer (which obviously I don't have), and some make it seem as if there's a special version of Snow Leopard I need to order from the Apple store?
    Help.

There is no special version of Snow Leopard (other than what ships with a Mac of that vintage). There is a regular retail version. It is a good idea to have a copy.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
After you install the new hard drive boot the computer from the OS disk, and install OS 10.6.
If you want a more recent OS, sign in to the App Store - use the same ID and password you have used here.
There you can download Yosemite, it's free.
I assume your MBP meets the requirements for Yosemite. If it does not, or if you want an earlier OS than 10.10, you should be able to find it at the App store.

  • Can I get a new and bigger hard drive on my macbook?

Right now I have an 80GB Hard Drive, It keeps getting filled up too easily and I need a bigger hard drive. When I chatted with a person (online) at the apple store they said it couldn't be replaced after it has been formatted or something, unless something was wrong with it. I'm not worried about losing information because everything is backed up to an external hard drive. Why isn't this possible? In January I got this new 80GB Hard drive along with a new battery. I'm wanting to upgrade it to around 120/150GB or something like that, whatever is in the hundreds. Any help would be appreciated. My macbook's specs are posted below. Your MacBook will support a 2.5" SATA drive. The largest drive currently available is 500 GB. Other sizes are 320 GB, 250 GB etc. The Apple tech was likely referring that Apple will not do a free replacement of your drive unless is was defective or failed. However, you can purchase the drive and install it yourself. It is relatively easy on the MacBook, or you can purchase the drive and have Apple or an Authorized Apple Dealer install it for you. The risk of DIY installation is that if you screw up Apple will not be responsible for any damages. If you are interested, please post back for a list of available HDDs and step by step directions and tips for installation.

  • Trying to use new 500GB external hard drive for backup for first time

I'm doing our normal Clonezilla Backup procedure and ran out of disk space for the first time.  The normal person who does this is on vacation.  I put the new hard drive in for the backup, but when I ran Clonezilla it didn't recognize it.
I looked in Server Manger and it shows it as Unknown with a red arrow and not initialized.  It's shown as unallocated.  What do I need to do at this point?  Do you have instructions or a link to instructions?  I'm new to working with servers,
etc.  I probably need to format the new external drive but I'm not sure how.  This is a simple server, without VM's, etc.
    Thanks!

    Thank you for the updating.

  • Replaced Hp with new hard drive but now i cannot install windows 7 recovery disks

Ok, so my laptop is a hp pavilion dv4-2165dx that has a broken screen and sometime after best buy tried to fix it the hard disk blew. I bought a new hard disk and put it in the computer and i got the official recovery and installation disks for windows 7. The hard drive is recognized by the computer and does start the recovery manager but it gets to 1% and does not go further. I let it run all night and the next morning it said that the cd failed. Did it fail because i have to connect an hdmi cord to my lg tv to see anything? Or was it because of something else?
I researched and found that with a new hard drive i will have to partition it and then format it to work with windows 7.
My question is, if the computer doesnt boot or let me use windows how can i partition and format the new hard disk? I have an older hp laptop as well that works efficiently in regard to its age (7) yrs. i wonder if i can buy a usb to sata/ide cord and attach the new disk to my old laptop and partition/format it there? Idk

Hello CaptianNike, welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you're trying to install Windows 7 on a replacement hard drive. I will try to assist you with this.
You definitely could use another computer to format and partition the drive. I'm not certain about the cables you've mentioned though (looked with goolgle and you can get usb to sata cables). If the computer is a desktop you should be able to connect it internally to just do the format/partition.
If the recovery disks worked correctly, then you should have the option to do the format and partition via Windows. This could be an indication as well that there's an issue with the disks.
Which leaves you with the option of obtaining another set of disks to try, or trying to partition first then installing. The easier would be the latter.
    I hope this helps.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

  • Hard Drive Spaces Vanishes, MacBook won't start

I am quite perplexed and sad because my MacBook is in a terrible state.
So, I normally have limited hard drive space remaining (1 - 3gb) on my drive, but earlier it started bothering me, telling me I had 400mb left. I then deleted some files and brought it back to 2.2gb left. Within a few minutes, I got another warning the hard drive was almost full. Suddenly, it was down to 146mb remaing, steadily decreasing (the only things open were Adium and Update). Then, it had 0kb left and started telling me to force quit applications. I eventually shut down, and now it won't boot. I turn it on, get the grey apple at the rotating graphic, but it stays there. Ironically, I can still boot windows.
Please, if you have any suggestions, I would very much appreciate help.
    Thanks

It sounds like you are building up excessive temporary files. What apps are you running? Have you installed apps lately? You should always keep at least 15% of your drive empty at all times.

  • New hard drive, won't let me use start up disk?

Just earlier today i switched out my macbook pro's hardrive for a new 750g 7200rpm scorpio black hdd by WD. Im pretty sure i installed it correctly, trying to instal the Mac osx, i hold alt while booting up, click on the cd saying mac boot disk or what not, but i get a message saying "please restart your computer" am i doing something horribly wrong here? I need that computer for school tomorrow :/ Thanks guys.

There is no install disc for OS X Lion 10.7.1.
So you must be using a Snow Leopard disc.
    How old is your MBP?
If it came with Lion (10.7.x) installed when you bought it you can not install Snow Leopard on it.
If you have your olde drive reinstall that. Download a program to Clone the old drive to the new drive, SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Then install the new drive.

On the advice of a friend I installed and ran a program on my MacBook called 'IPSecuritas'. This has stopped my wireless network from appearing and disappearing, but I still can't connect. Would really appreciate some help with this.

How do I install a new 320 GB hard drive on my MacBook using Time Machine? I have purchased the hard drive and know how to take out the old drive and put in the new drive.

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html

Which computer? There is a label on the bottom.
Exactly which hard drive is it? Give us the specific model so we can look it up.
Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device.
If you have restored the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media, that probably means you restored to a drive with the new advanced-format technology.
    Try installing this driver.

  • Can I transfer the hard drive from my Macbook into a new Macbook Pro?

I have been planning on purchasing a Macbook Pro for quite sometime now, however I find that the storage space on the base models is quite small. I currently have a 500gb hard drive on my Macbook, and I was wondering if there's any way I could transfer this hard drive into a new Macbook Pro.

If you are considering to purchase Mac Book Pro is not Retina, you can get 1TB HDD as option with +$50.

Hold down the Option key while you boot your Mac. Then, it should show you a selection of devices. Click your flash drive and it will boot from that.
