New 60 gb iPod, old iTunes

I bought a 60gb iPod today, hoping it would counteract my problems with synching my iTunes collection - which originated on a PC. I'm still concerned that the collection (on my Powerbook G4) will speak to my new iPod - especially as the iPod is saying it's formatted to a PC. Can anyone help? I have a bad feeling about this...

Your powerbook will have no problem with a Windows formatted iPod... but if you're not using a Windows machine, then there's no reason to keep it formatted for Windows.
You can just use the iPod Updater utility on your Powerbook to do a Restore on the iPod and it will format for Mac. You'll get much better performance this way.
As far as iTunes goes, just make sure you are at version 6 or later. Your post indicates that you have an "old iTunes". The new iPod requires at least version 6.

  • HT1386 I have a new computer and when I tried to sync my iPod Touch with the new iTunes, it has lost all of my music and videos from my iPod/old iTunes library: including all but 4 songs of my bought songs, videos and audeobooks!

I have recently updated my computer since my old one broke and therefore had to download a new iTunes. When I came to add my iPod to this new iTunes, I was given no option to transfer the contents of my iPod library to this new iTunes and was forced to try 'sync'; when my old computer was repaired once we lost all of our data so I had to download a new iTunes then, all of my iPod downloads were transferred and I could easily reburn my CDs so I didn't think the wiping of my iPod would be a problem. When I clicked 'sync' it warned me that it would replace the contents of my iPod with the new iTunes library, as I said I didn't think this would be a problembut then it asked if it should transfer my recent iTunes downloads so I said 'yes'. The sync was completed but now I only have 4 downloaded songs and 5 albums which I burned to my new iTunes! I have lost all the music I bought, all the videos I bought and all the audiobooks I bought! (Luckily I still have my apps.) I tried to restore backup but realised that only covers calendars, contacts E.T.C and I checked my iTunes account and that shows all my downloads but I can't see a way to restore them or anything like that!
Please help! I am in despair as you can imagine how much moneys worth I have lost and am losing faith in Apple

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.

  • How do I sync old devices to a new iMac without our old iTunes library? Our orig iMac died with the library on it.

Our old iMac died and we got a new one. The problem is that our entire iTunes library was on the old iMac and all of our iPads and iPhones were synced to the old dead iMac. How do we sync the devices to the new iMac now?

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss.  To use a device with a new computer you transfer the content from the old computer (or its backup) directly to the new computer, not the device to the new computer. Media syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • Brand New 30 gb iPod freezes itunes

My 5th generation video iPod will immediately freeze iTunes. The iPod will charge and display "Do Not Disconnect" but it will not transfer songs because iTunes (the newest version) has been frozen. So now I have this fully charged, empty iPod.
Why is this happening to me? The family has a new shuffle, a nano, and an older generation iPod that all work fine.

The newest software for ipod video has many glitches in it that apple is hopefully trying to fix. In the meantime, I would suggest giving them a call:

  • Question about a new Mac and my old iTunes apps and music

I just purchased a new Macbook Pro to replace my old Windows laptop. I'm planning on de-authorizing my old laptop and wiping it. How do I ensure that I won't lose any apps I've purchased for my iPhone, and any Music I've purchased from iTunes?
    Thanks!

There is a "Music" folder in Finder. Put "iTunes" and its whole folder structure in "Music". So it will look like:
    Music
    .....iTunes
    ........itunes Music (folder)
    ........iTunes Library (file)
    ........iTunes Music Library.xml (file)
The first time you launch iTunes it will probably want to rebuild the library. When it finishes you must Authorize the new Mac in the iTunes store. Click on iTunes Store, then got to Store/Authorize Computer in the iTunes menu.

  • Syncing new iphone 3GS to old itunes version

    Hi,
I just bought an iphone and am trying to sync it to my laptop- but my macbook's operating system is old (OSX 10.4.11) and i'm running itunes 9.1.1.
Is there a way that I can adjust my iphone to accept an older version of itunes? i can't get the current itunes on this OS.
i'm not sure if i can even update the OS on this laptop to keep it current... it's from 2005 and it's already been updated twice.
    Thanks for yr help!

Near an Apple store? If so, make an appointment. Take your computer and phone. There have been reports of the geniuses updating computers running Tiger to Leopard and then giving you the Leopard disk. Can't guarantee this will be your experience, but worth a try if a store is close by.
