New 70D dead

Hi,
My husband recently bought me a Canon 70d for our silver anniversarya fantasic upgrade from my 1000d. I had it less than a day before it died. I have contacted the place I bought it from and they have agreed to replace it as long as there is no user damage which is fair enough.
My question.
The camera died while connected to the EOS utility software. I got a message saying the camera had been disconnected from the computer and the top LCD screen was frozen. I left it for a while to see if it was doing something - about half an hour to no avail. It wouldn't turn off at all. Eventually I removed the battery to reboot it. When I turned it back on there was nothing. No hint of power at all. I recharged the battery even though it was almost full, tried a different SD card, a different lens, left the battery out overnight, nothing has made a difference. The camera shop have said because it was connected to my computer it was possibly the computer that killed the camera and if this is the case then no replacement.
So has anyone heard of the EOS utility causing any problems and is it possible for my PC to have caused the issue. Also can they actually tell in the shop that my PC did something malicious or is this just a possible get out of giving me a replacement?
I really just want to be informed for when I take it back tomorrow and speak to them.
Many thanks
Traci.

Hi,
thank you. I was looking more for advice than official Canon Support, I realise it's the US forums, but there isn't an Australian alternative. If I have trouble returning the Camera I'll contact Canon Australia, I just wanted to go to the store with a little knowledge about the situation, so my apologies.
Don't apologize. Canon's compartmentalization of their support function is fussy and sel-interested, with no benefit to the consumer. You are not obliged to encourage it.

Lightroom doesn't use the Camera Raw plug-in. All of the Camera Raw technology is part of the Lightroom program. You will either have to upgrade to Lightroom 5 or use the DNG converter to create digital negative copies that can be used with Lightroom 4.

  • A video camera that looks as good as the EOS 5DIII & the new 70D

Hi everyone.  I really want to make myself clear on my questions, so I'm going to preface them with a short wall of text.  My apologies.
I work for local government and we film political meetings, PSA's, informational videos, documentaries, and local government events (groundbreakings, ribbon cuttings, roundtables, etc).  We are still entirely standard definition.  For the past 7-9 years we've only used Canon XL1's and XL2's, but in the last 2 years we've gone tapeless.
For our first foray into this, we first bought  JVC GY-HM150U's (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/821133-REG/JVC_GY_HM150U_GY_HM150U_ProHD_Handheld_Memory.html).  Our main desires here were:  small, universal file type (we use several different editing systems), a "super full auto mode" for our non-advanced users, XLR inputs for microphones, relatively inexpensive, and SD or CF card slots.  Obviously, we nailed all of these features with this camera, but the video quality is lower than we could've expected.
At the same time, we purchased a Canon EOS 5D Mark III for taking still pictures during events.  Then, to our ultimate downfall, we started using it for interviews and documentary type shoots.  I'm sure I don't need to tell you all the shock we were in for when it came to the amazing picture quality of this camera.  To take these two cameras on a shoot together is pointless as the JVC's could not even come close to the quality of the Canon's.  However, we cannot use the 5D as a primary camera during these shoots for several reasons (which I'll point out below).  We began following the development of the new EOS 70D with interest when we found out it woud fix some of these features.  Coincidentally, another department of ours purchased one and we were able to use it for a few shoots.  It does seem to have as good a picture quality as the 5D, but it still lacks some features we need.
So, in preparing next years budget, I'm looking for actual video cameras with the amazing picture quality of the 5DIII and the 70D, but doens't have the limitations of a still photography camera.  Any help would be appreciated.
Problems with the 5DIII as a primary video camera:
no follow focus, only records for 30 minutes segments, only 3.5mm audio input (need XLR)
Problems with 70D as a primary video camera:
no headphone output, can't adjust audio input levels while recording, still only records 30 minute segments, 3.5mm audio input
I'm an Audio / Video technician and video editor.  I do a lot of filming, but do not know much of the science and technology behind the inner working of the cameras.  As an example of our programs, below are two things I filmed with the EOS 5DIII.
Thank you all in advance for any help you can provide.

I'm not a video guy.  Canon lists their Cinema EOS video cameras on a separate section than they use for their EOS cameras.
The cinema cameras and their specs can be found here:  http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/professional/products/professional_cameras/cinema_eos_cameras
Based on specs, I'm thinking you would probably be well-served by the C100.  It takes the same EOS EF lenses as your 5D III so you can get the look you want.  It records in AVCHD with MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 -- which is fairly common.
The cards are formatted FAT32 although it says it can record continuously for up to 12 hours.  I'm not sure how it pulls this off because no single file on a FAT32 filesystem which constrains individual files to a maximum of 2GB (that's a filesystem limit... not a camera or operating system limit).   I'm "guessing" that it automatically creates a new file and just keeps streaming video as one file fills up.
You should probably rent one to make sure it meets your needs.

  • Lightroom Raw and CR2 from my new 70d

I just purchased my very own Canon 70d.  I find that the RAW module I have in Photoshop Elements 9 is not compatible with the .CR2 raw files my new camera generates, nor can the Organizer recognize the .CR2 format.  I wanted to find out what the differences are between the RAW module appropriate for Elements 12 and Lightroom 5.  I have not been able to find any specifics on the differences between the two.  I get generic statemenst like "It's better."  What does it do and in what way?  I am a very techincal kind of guy and like specs when I can get them.
Could someone point me in the right direction, either what the differences are or where I can read about them?
    Thanks in advance;
    Tony

I cannot give you the technical information that you might be searching for. But I can tell you that raw editing using Lightroom gives you far more flexibility than it will with any version of Photoshop Elements. You have additional "tabs" in Lightroom that give you more control over your image. Tone curve, hue/saturation adjustments, etc. I cannot give you a complete list because I have never used Camera Raw using Photoshop Elements. Additionally, the Process Version 2012 that you would have in Lightroom 5 offers the radial filter that I don't believe is available in any version of Photoshop Elements. If you upgraded to the latest version of Photoshop Elements you would have the new process version. But some of the features in Camera Raw will not be available. I think choosing Lightroom would be a good choice, but you need to take time to watch some tutorials so you understand how it works.

  • New iPhone Dead MBP

I bought a new iPhone last week and set it up on my MacBook Pro. I downloaded several applications from iTunes, synced my calendar and contacts from my old cell phone using Outlook. So everything works great with my iPhone, except my MacBook Pro died, (harddrive is dead)so I bought the new MacBook. Is there anyway I can set up my iPhone with my new MacBook? I really don't want to upload all the application and outlook info again.

If you don't have files backed up elsewhere, not much you can really do.
You can re-download the apps (iTunes will tell you that you already bought them and not charge you) but any data in them will have to be put back in.
Syncing with a new outlook will merge contacts so what is on phone will move back to computer. Same for calendar etc info.

  • New Latop Dead after BIOS Update

I just bought this laptop in October, 2014 a C50 PSCMLU-04202F to replace my 2003 Dell and after about 10 times of usage it is dead. Toshiba software on my computer said to install the BIOS update and it completed installing but now will not boot. I get the message: "Reboot and select propoer Boot device or insert Boot media in selected Boot device and press a key". They will not provide support without a credit card. Support says I am out of warranty, yet it was there support tool that said I needed to update my BIOS which I did. Can anyone help me? I moved ALL my pictures to this new computer and fear they are gone....

OH so I did the power button F2 and in advanced saw that the HDD/SDD was first so am assuming it can't see the hard drive i called Toshiba back and this tech said that since i was litterly 2 day out of warranty they would talk me through a reset, but to take it somehwere first to get my pictures off of there as a reset would wipe it out. Once I do that i wil lcall them back and if the reset does not work, they will be charging me 29.99 to ship back and fix since the hard drive IS under warranty - somethnig Alvin my morning tech didn't bother to check on or inform me of but swore someone would call me back and that didn't happen. So story here is stay tuned. Maria was FAR better service.

  • IPhoto won't import photos from new 70D

Hi - I'm hoping for some guidance. I was a Rebel Xsi user for years, and just got a 70D. I used to be able to plug my camera in and iphoto would open up and import everything. Now, it only works sporadically, which is even weirder than not working at all. Right now I have 100+ photos from two important events sitting on my memory card that iphoto won't recognize. It imported about a dozen photos I took today without a problem, though. The photos are viewable from the camera. I can't recall changing any settings between taking those photos and the ones I took today. It doesn't make a difference if I plug the SD card directly into my computer; the software is still not recognizing any of the photos that are on the card. Any ideas?
    Using:
    Canon EOS70D
    Macbook Pro with iPhoto '09

Note that on a 70D the WiFi feature must be disabled in order to transfer images to your computer via USB method.
This only applies to the cameras that have WiFi (70D & 6D).
Also, if you do shoot in RAW format, then you'll need to make sure your computer is updated with the latest Camera RAW Updates from Apple.  This only applies to RAW... not JPEG.  Also I noticed you mentioned iPhoto '09 ... which is rather old and made me wonder if your version of OS X might also be old.  Apples Camera RAW updates are provided at the operating system level (because the same Camera RAW update is shared by Finder, Preview, iPhoto, Aperture, and anything else that might need to decode a RAW file.  My point for mentioning this is that if your OS version is too old then Apple may no longer be providing updates.  In that case you'd need to updgrade the OS (but Apple gives their OS upgrades away -- they don't charge for them.)

  • Brand new iPad dead out of box

I have just bought my hubbie an iPad 2 from Amazon for his birthday, but on taking it out of the box on the day find it is dead. Tried charging, no response. Doesn't respond to on/off button. Any hope?

    1. Charge it for at least 1 hour
    2. Hold the Sleep and Home button down until you see the Apple Logo.

  • New computer, dead old computer, 4 ipods

my ibook died and i have replaced it w/a new imac.  we have 4 ipods.  what is the best way to get the apps and music (and maybe photos) from the ipods onto the new imac?

Connect them to the new iMac, when it tells you they have been synced to another mac click "Transfer Purchases," and then authorize the computer to sync to the iPod. Then your iMac and all 4 iPods will all have the same library and same selection of media.

  • New iphone, dead mac

first the old mac dies with all my lists files etc. taken to mac store, hard drive problems, suggests recycling....have new fast imac. Any way to retrieve old lists, contacts from old iphone to mac then to new iphone?

This is one of the reasons why creating and maintaining a backup of all your import data stored on your computer's hard drive stored on an external drive or some other external media is so important. The iPhone is not designed nor intended to be a backup storage device.
The sync process for contact info is a bi-directional or true sync process with the supported application on your computer, and the same for calendar events and Safari bookmarks.
Before syncing contacts with the Address Book and calendar events with iCal on your Mac, enter one unique contact in the Address Book and one unique calendar event in iCal on your Mac. This will provide a merge prompt when syncing this data with the Address Book and iCal, which you want to select.
Regarding your iTunes library, was the Apple store able to recover any data from your old Mac's hard drive such as your iTunes library or any other important data?

  • New HDD = dead sync

I just got a new HDD put in my Powerbook, and I copied the old iCal info to my new drive, and now I cannot sync my Palm Zire. I installed Palm 4.2.1 and set it up in iSync. It will look like it is doing something, but then not actually change anything.
    iSMH

    Hi iSMH
A new HD in your PB wouldn't be the reason to your syncing problems.
It's probably some sort of wrong settings, but I can't help you with that, since I don't own a Palm anymore.

  • New 70D owner wanting to record video - has questions

I recently purchased a 70D due to the gratifying comments of satisfied owners of this camera and touting it's ability to shoot great video.  My question is this:  I want to shoot event video's such as HS plays, graduations, weddings, etc. and am asking if there are issues with recording at this length of time such as overheating, shutting down, etc.  I know that it has a 29:59 limit and you just need to stop and restart before that time and continue recording.  Is this a fair statement or am I in trouble if I want to record something with any length.
    Thanks in advance!
    Dave

No problem with heating or anything. Moving shooting will stop if you use a slow card, so get the fastest one possible.

  • New G5 DEAD after two days

I have a DP 2.3 G5 and a 23" CD and it worked fine for two days. Was running 2.5 Gigs of RAM, working great. Yesterday while running iTunes and a few other things the 23" CD went to sleep, though the music continued to play. I moved my mighty mouse to wake the display and the machine froze, and the music stopped. Tried to restart with the power button, finally had to unplug, and not it won't start. Power button turns on, fans come on but I get no chime and the light ont he power button goes out (no blinking). No LED. I've removed the added RAM, same result. I've removed ALL RAM, and got the LED but no chime or beeping. I've reset the PMU, no change.
    HELP

With only two days experience, it's hard to tell what is wrong, since there wasn't time to tell what was right!
First step is to run the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) that is on the Software Install DVD that came with your computer. Until you know that the hardware and any extras such as the additional RAM is working, we can't make much progress diagnosing what went wrong.
Be prepared for the AHT Extended Test to run several hours, for your fans to all run at full speed and for the display to stay lit the entire time. What a way to spend Thanksgiving! Start the test just before you leave for your holiday dinner and it should be done by the time you get back. Post your results and you'll get lots of advice, but you have to provide specifics of what is right before we can work on what went wrong.
P.S. Your G5 won't run with no RAM, so put back what it came with, but leave out the additional RAM, then run just the Quick Test to make sure the stock hardware is OK, then add your additional RAM and go for the Extended Test.

  • New DSLR owner (70D), need some pointers

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and am trying to learn as much as possible about my new 70D. I just have a few questions I was hoping I could get answered.
    1. Should I always be shooting in RAW mode? I want the best possible images...
    2. Should I always try to be using the lowest ISO possible?
    3. What lense would you recommend as a prime? I have two kit lenses but am looking for something that would be good at everything (landscapes, portraits, etc.)
I'm sure I'll think of more but if I could get any responses on these I'd surely appreciate it!
    Thanks

    1) Yes, but then you have to learn post processing and need a bigger HDD to store your images.
    2) Yes, whenever possible. But don't be afraid to pump up ISO in lower light situation to keep desired shutter speed or aperture. Newer camera is pretty good with high ISO.
3)There is no such thing. Generally, people use Wide angle lens for landscapes and mid-tele for Portrait. You don't have to get Prime, you can settle for zoom L-lens. They're much better then the kit lens and may fit your requirement better than prime.
