New 8 Core MP passing power to firewire ports even when turned off???

Is anyone else noticing this? Even after you have turned the power off to the MP 8 core, power continues to travel through the firewire ports?

Some FireWire functions work with the computer off. See:

and

"When in sleep, the Mac Pro has 25 W of power available to the USB and FireWire ports, and memory. If the combined USB and FireWire port power load exceeds the available power, power to those ports will be cut to preserve memory."

  • Mac Pro Power Supply making noise (even when turned off)

    Hi everyone,
My Mac Pro Early 2008 (Dual quad core 2,8) began to make noise a while ago and it drives me mad.
The sound is (100% sure) coming from the Power Supply. The sound is not mechanical, but electrical, like an oscillator crackle sort of.
First I thought it was the PSU itself, so I had it replaced with a new one, but that did not change the situation.
The (new) PSU makes excactly the same noise, even when my computer is turned off (but still connected to the power socket in the wall).
I've eliminated all possible factors that could create an interference (other electrical devices).  I even completely switched off the power of my office, except for one power socket; the one I used to test the Mac.  As soon as I connected the Mac, as soon the noise came back. So, it's got to be inside the Mac.
So my question is: if it's not the PSU, nor the power of my office, what could it be?
PS: I've tried a UPS too... but that did not change a bit.
    Thanks for your suggestions!

Do you place the ipod in the dock during the night? I did this once and the other day the battery was almost empty because it kept on playing after it rested in the dock.

  • I have a firewire scanner but my new computer does  not have a firewire port

I have a Nikon Coolscan firewire scanner, but my new computer does not have a firewire port. Are there any suggestions on how I can continue to use my scanner? Is there some form of Firewire to USB interface?
    Thanks for any ideas.

I would think Gene's adapter will work fine, but if you are stuck, it might be useful to find larger number of Nikon users to ask.  The DPReview forums come to mind, except they are split into sections.  If you are on flickr, there is bound to be a general Nikon group.  The Canon group on flickr gets a ton of traffic and has a trillion members.  Then there are places like Fred Miranda and Luminous Landscape, that is mostly populated by grown ups with lots of knowledge.  On second thoughts, forget about Luminous Landscape, unless that was a typo in your first post, and you actually have a Hasselblad or PhaseOne scanner

    Hi the_mad_movies,
It seems like this article will be the best option for addressing this issue:

I transferred my library to a new laptop and everything appeared on the screen. I turned off the old computer and the library disappeared. How can I make it a permanent transfer as my old computer is being scrapped. Thanks

    Hello Terryfrank,
Congratulations on your new laptop!  Also, thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with transferring your iTunes Library to your new computer.
I notice that you are coming from the article “iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer,” and it sounds like you might have used the Home Sharing method outlined in that article.
With Home Sharing, you can stream content from another computer, and it sounds like that is how you have it currently set up.  The last step is to import the content to your new computer.  Use these steps on the new computer (while the old computer is on) to import the music to your new computer’s hard drive:
Once your new computer sees the Home Share from your old computer, click that Home Share on the left side of iTunes on your new computer.
Select the content in the Home Share that you want to transfer to your iTunes library on your new computer, or choose Edit > Select All to choose all of it. Then, click the Import button in the bottom-right corner of iTunes.
Wait for the content to finish transferring.
Additionally, if you want to transfer your playlists, you can export them from the old computer to the new computer:
    Transferring playlists
If you want not only your content but also your playlists to exist on your new computer, you will want to transfer a copy of all your playlists from your old computer. To do this, choose File > Library > Export Library on your old computer. Save the XML file that is created to your desktop.
Send the playlists file to yourself as an e-mail attachment, use an external drive, or use file sharing to move the playlists file to your new computer. Once the file is on your new computer, open iTunes and choose File > Library > Import Playlist. The import process will remove any items from the playlists that you didn't share via Home Sharing.

  • Any work around to get the new iPod to connect to the firewire port?

I've read these new iPods won't work with firewire. Does anyone know if there's any workaround? USB 1.1 is impossible to deal with.

I've been exploring this question, too, since I just bought a new iPod nano as a gift for someone with an older G4 iMac with Firewire and USB 1.0 ports. VERY frustrating that for the sake of a cable, Apple doesn't seem to allow this! The computer isn't that old!
I'm still looking for a solution, which I am convinced should be out there somewhere. Here's what I've found and questions I hope someone can help with:
The Apple store has a dock to firewire connector that doesn't work with the new ipods apparently, and a Y-cable that includes FIrewire and USB 2.0 (M9688G/A) for older ipods. There is also a dock to Firewire cable for G4 ipods/ipod mini, etc. (M9127G) What is so different about the dock connector on new nanos that disallow these cables to work?
What about using the current Apple Universal Dock with the dock to Firewire cable or the Y cable above. Shouldn't that work? Dock fits nano, FW cable fits computer. Am I missing something here? I'd rather not spend $70 more to make synching possible, but if it would work...
Has anyone tried these solutions or are there any 3rd party solutions available (this seems a ridiculous problem, considering FW is an Apple technology that is still current -- we're not talking about SCSI here!)? TIA

  • Power supply vs. logic board?  turns off in sleep mode.

My imac g5 (2004 - 1st generation?) is either turning completely off or going into some un-wake-up-able mode after it's put to sleep. (I have to switch off/on the power strip and turn the computer on all over again.) And sometimes if it's sleeping (power light pulsing on front) it may or may not wake from sleep by pushing the power button. Often touching a key in that circumstance will cause it to crash, so I've quit using that altogether as a method of waking it up. I've reset the SMU a number of times throughout the past few months and it has not cleared up this problem.
Last night after I put it to sleep it switched in to the un-wake-up-able mode. I could still hear something running (not a fan, just an electrical hum) where it seems like it's crashed and can't shut itself off. I had to turn off the power and try to turn the computer back on. It wouldn't respond the first couple times. Then the power light glowed for a while but it still didn't turn on completely. After a few more minutes I tried again. Maybe I held the power button for too long, but I heard a long single beep, the fans whirred, and then everything started up as usual.
I've read a number of threads seemingly related to these issues, but am now not clear about whether this is a power supply issue or a logic board issue. I have yet to open the back and check for bulging capacitors. Just thought I'd ask here first.

I am having a very close issue too (posted also in a more recent thread about power button not functioning). My old iMac G5 20 inches got a power supply that went bad two years ago. I had it replaced and all went fine until two weeks ago.
My wife was using it, while I was away: machine shut down with a 'pop!' sound.
She tried to start it up again, but after pressing the button a couple of times - the last one longer - she had a long strong peep. The machine went on for a while and then off again. Scared, she left it off.
After checking, no reported issue seems to fit to the problems shown: power supply is working; logic board too. The machine is working fine, but on sleep, it dies out. While doing tasks, at undetermined times, it shuts down with a 'pop!'. Sometimes you can restart it immediately. Sometimes you can't and have to wait one or more hours. No evidently bad caps on board, led check returns 1 (no 2 flashing or attempting to turn on) with dead computer, otherwise all working fine. Hardware test also passed. Console messages have nothing relevant or clearly understandable to offer.
Still can't figure out a solution. Many user are pretty fast in suggesting to bringing the machine to Apple. Unfortunately not all around the world we have/need cars. And getting the 20 kg of iMac by feet/metro to the shop it ain't such a nice walk. When I fried the power supply, there was no sufficiently large box on sale to pack the computer and have it send to the shop. I had to wait for the technician - on a convenient day - do drop by and take it (and he knew he was going to repair it)!
Will post, if I have further developments.

  • OSX is blocking ports with firewall turned off...

I just purchased an iMac last week. I am not new to macs, but this is my first one in a few years so I am new to Leopard. The problem I've been having is strange. It seems that port 5190 is totally unreachable. This makes it impossible to connect to aim and use file transfer. I know i can connect on port 443, but file transfer doesn't work on that port. I also can not connect to certain streaming video websites. Justin.tv is one of them. On that site, the page loads perfectly, but no video loads. Other ports could also be affected but as of now, 5190 is the only one I know for a fact not to be working. I am behind a router, but I have 5 other PCs using the router with no problems. Everything works great on the windows machines. I have also tried to directly connect the mac to my cable modem. That didn't work. The blockage is local to this machine. I have disabled the OSX firewall and that did nothing. I am at a total loss here. If there is anyone that has an idea, i would very much appreciate it.
    thanks

Just to make sure, by disabled the firewall, you've set it to Allow all incoming connections?
Can you Ping it on that port? You may need to make sure Stealth mode is turned off in the Advanced button of Firewall System Prefs. While there, enable logging. Try to connect and see what the log produces.

  • Optical Sound out port won't turn off... No more sound...

My MBP has an optical out port (sound). I plugged in standard analog speakers a lot and all worked fine. Now I once plugged in a mono(!) analog cable and since that time the optical connection stays open (red light in the port), I can't connect standard stereo speakers any more and also the intermal speakers stay off even when nothing is plugged in.
In the system settings nothing can be done, all entries are grey. Rebooting doesn't help either.
What can I do?? ANy help?

I had this problem with my Intel MacBook Pro. It was only an issue when I used Boot Camp to boot into the Windows partition. Apple updated drivers for teh audio card, and once I updated Boot Camp and re-installed the new drivers that fixed the issue.
Note that this issue DID NOT occur on the Mac side for me -- it was only when I booted into Windows.
