New 8 Core sort of weirdness

So we just got a new 8 core Mac Pro for one of our animators and i am setting it up with software. The weird thing i just noticed is that the second drive we ordered is named, and this is straight out of the box, "NotQuiteMaxDisk".
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Ok, strange: http://www.mediabaron.com/blog/2006/01/17/***-bizzaro-hard-disk-issue/
so does this mean i have a flaky drive? Any thoughts?

  • New Core Duo just won't start up again

    Hi Everyone,
I am having a problem with my shiny new Core Duo Mini which I received yesterday. I would contact Apple support but today is a public holiday in Australia so I figured I would try the forums.
All went well with the set up. I ran software update and got all the updates (10.4.6, iPhoto, iTunes, Java, Front Row, and a couple of others that I can't remember) and did a reboot. All was fine.
I opened up iPhoto and imported all my photos but as it neared the end of the import the machine just cut out, gave me a black screen, made it's boot-up chime and started rebooting. I have owned Mac's for years and never had one do this to me before.
I figured maybe I had worked it too hard (I just imported 12000 raw images which probably gave it a good workout) so I thought I would do a shut down and let it cool down for a while. Before I got a chance to shut it down it cut-out again and powered off.
I left it for a while then tried to start it up but all I got was the flashing power LED (it flashes very breifly about once a second - sort of like blip............blip...........blip.........blip......... etc. ) and no display signal. I checked out Apple Support and tried a PRAM reset using CMD-OPT-P-R and SMC reset by unplugging all the cables and leaving it for a few minutes but to no avail.
I am using Apple wireless keyboard and mouse and I when it all started to go wrong I had an external firewire drive connected. I also have a blank CD stuck in the drive that I can't eject.
I wondered if it had somehow changed the start-up drive and is looking for another start-up disc or something?? At this point any advice would be really appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Paul.

    Hi Tom,
Thanks for that. I tried ejecting the CD as you suggested by holding down the mouse button (I tried with both my Apple wireless mouse and an old MS USB mouse that I have) but it won't spit the CD out.
When I power-up the Mini the CD drive makes the usual mechanical noises that it should and it spins up for a few seconds but all the while I still have the flashing power LED and nothing else happens. I noticed that when I used the MS mouse the optical sensor on the bottom of the mouse didn't light.
I am suspecting that this Mac Mini may be taking a trip back to Apple very soon.
    Thanks again for the suggestions.

  • -69774: Couldn't bring the new Core Storage Logical Volume online.....What Now?

    Hey,
    I'll start from the begining.
I have a 1TB that was running Mavericks, which I decided to perform Firevault 2.  Anyway my hard drive crashed and now I have Mavericks running on a different 250 gig hard drive and have been trying to decrypt my original 1tb harddrive through terminal.
So I originally did the "diskutil corestorage unlockVolume UUID -stdinpassphrase thing and it said that it could not mount it but I notice that it was converting.  So after 6 hours the converting stopped and now it says that decyrption is no longer neccessary and that it needs to be reverted.  So I am try to revert it with terminal and it tells me that it is unable to find mount point. So ive been trying to mount the disk and comes up with the above error -69774: Couldn't bring the new Core Storage Logical Volume online.  So does anybody have any suggestions??
    -Thank you

To anybody that read this and has the same sort of problem:
I just recovered my stuff using stellar pheonix Mac Data Recovery, even after I coundnt mount it on my other mac machine.   Great software.

  • Second hand Core Duo or new Core Duo 2?

Ok, I am really in doubt at this moment. I can buy a second hand Macbook 1.83 Core Duo with 2 Gb mem. for EUR 950 which seems like a good deal to me, but... should it be a better choice to go for the second generation Core Duo processors of the current Mac Books considering the upcoming OS? Or is speed more about internal mem than CPU? Can anyone figure this one out for me?

We really can't answer this one for you - it really comes down to personal preference and what you are planning to use the laptop for. Check out the technical differences between the two and think about whether or not the differences are really important to you. There are three big differences, off the top of my head:
    - Core duo is 32-bit, while Core 2 duo is 64-bit.
    - Core 2 duo ships with an 802.11n capable wireless chipset
    - Battery life seems a bit longer with Core 2 duo, and it tends to run a bit cooler.
There are quite a few more minor differences between the two (and several not-so-minor ones that I'm forgetting about, I'm sure). If your price for the core duo is significantly lower than the newer core 2 duo, and if the differences between them don't really matter to you, then I see no reason not to go with the cheaper laptop.

  • Adobe reader really slow on brand new Core-i7 machine

Opening of a PDFs is very very slow on my brand new Windows 7 64-bit machine. Machine is a new Core-i7  system with 16Gb Memory
PDF's which open on other much older pc's within a second take 20-30 seconds on this new machine.
The machine has a Radeon R260 Graphics card which was used in the previous machine with no issues. Just to be sure I have removed the card and used the on-board graphics to try to eliminate the card but the problem is exactly the same so must be windows related.
Reader has been uninstalled and re-installed with no Joy.
The rendering of the image is a problem as when zooming or panning the image again redraws very slowly (20-30 seconds) each time.
    PC is otherwise very fast.
    Can anyone help ?
    Thanks
    VS

    Hi VS2015,
Have you noticed this issue with any other program too or just with Adobe Reader?
How much on-board graphics memory do you have on your system?
Moreover, As you had mentioned that "The rendering of the image is a problem as when zooming or panning the image again redraws very slowly (20-30 seconds) each time." I would recommend you to Update your Video Driver from Device manager option in Control Panel.

  • Error: -69774: Couldn't bring the new Core Storage Logical Volume online

    Hi,
    I have a filevault encrypted drive (750GB).
I first noticed a problem when it prompted my for the FileVault passphrase (which I had stored in my keychain) and entering the correct passphrase resulted in the typical "error" response (the sideways "bouncing" entry field) asking me for the passphrase again.
So I get a list of the corestorage to get the UUID of the encrypted volume:
    >diskutil corestorage list

BTW: after a while I also hear a single clicking sound (head jumping back on drive) so I am not sure if it might be a physical disk failure.
    Any ideas anyone?

Also, I've tried Terminal command: diskutil corestorage revert UUID -stdinpassphrase which returned "Error: -69854: A disk with a mount point is required"
Also, I've tried Terminal command: diskutil corestorage changeVolumePassword UUID -newpassphrase which returned "Error beginning CoreStorage Logical Volume unlock: The target Core Storage volume is not encrypted (-69755)"

are there any new Core Duo 2 Macbook benchmarks out yet?

Well, 46°C idle do seem high, even for the 4MB Core 2 Duos. I think with the stock cooler you should idle around 38°C to 40°C, depending on your ambient temperature. You can overclock your CPU moderatly without burning it, and if you dont increase the v-core, things are pretty safe anyway. Just make sure your memory can handle the speeds, but if you set the divider to 533MHz (1:1) 300MHz for example shouldnt be a problem. Set the v-dimm (RAM voltage) to 2.1v.
Your CPU temps dont have anything to do with the PSU you use. Its more about the other components in your system and your airflow. Do you have a case with fans sucking air in? If not find some fans that fit into your case (lower front, rear). Using the stock cooler a better airflow will give you better CPU temps immediately.

  • When does apple integrate the new Core 2 Duo Processors into the MacBooks?!

Does anyone know if apple decided to integrate the new Core 2 Duo processors from Intel into the Macbooks, yet?
    When does it happen?!?!?
    Thx
    backbeat

In order to keep up with the core 2 duo processor enabled laptops, apple must sooner or later have the new processors in either the MB lineup or the MBP's...however, if you want to fully take advantage of the new core 2 duo processors, might as well wait 'til next spring..when they come out with the new logic boards for the core 2 duo's...the current core 2 duo's share the same pin lay-out with the core duo's, so they can be used in the same logic boards,....(the people who buy the MB's with the core 2 duo processors are gonna regret buying it if they buy it before spring....cuz of this..)
wait 'til next spring so you'll be fully happy with your MB...or , like me, you can just wait for your order right now and be satisfied with it.....
when you do wait 'til spring, they'll probably have another new technological advancement, so you'll wanna wait for that.....sooner or later....we'll get 3D computer screens!!!!~~~
my point is, you must evaluate what you'll be using your MB for...if the current MB's can fully service you, don't wait...

  • Migration to a new Core

    Hi
I am about to undertake a project to migrate our core switches to new hardware and am keen to find out the best way of doing this.
    Currently we have 3 sites. A, B and C
Site A, contains two Cisco 4506 switches that are end of life and are the ones scheduled for replacement. However, these pair of switches have a large number of SVIs, have many other access switches trunked to them, and they are running EIGRP and so have a large number of routes to other parts of the same overall network
Site B have switches connected over layer 3 vlan to Site A via a LAN extension service. Switches in Site B have local vlans and SVIs
Site C have switches connected over layer 3 vlan to Site A via fibre. Switches in Site C have local vlans and SVIs
Obviously i'd need to try and keep downtime to a minimum  so is it possible to set up the new Core switches in parallel in Site A, trunk them to the old Core, set the gateway of last resort to the old Core and then move each SVI one by one? Or maybe run EIGRP on the new Core also and let it work out the routing?
    Thanks in advance
    Leon

    Hi
we re about to migrate a couple of 6509-E to a couple of new 6513-E
We have a collapsed redundant core w/ some physical servers, couple of Nexus switches, about 40 access stacks. All is connected redundant to the two 6509-E's
Our plan would be like this:
    - First completely pre-configure the new 6513-E's, except for OSPF and BGP. And we shutdown all the SVI's
    - Label all cables going to the old 6509-E's (we print the new port numbers of the 6513-E to these labels)
    - Plug all these cables out of the first 6509-E
    - Get the first 6509-E out of the rack
Everything will be still running since everything is still plugged in to the second 6509-E. (But we re running on only 1 coreswitch now, so fingers crossed)
    - Build the new 6513-E into the rack & power on
    - Build a trunk between the 6509-E and the 6513-E
    - Plug the cables into the new 6513 according to the label info.
    - Shut down the SVI's  (with a script) on the old 6509-E and bring them up at the 6513-E (also with a script) . We will then have a short downtime for connected networks and no Internet or remote OSPF networks for some moments)
    - De-activate BGP and OSPF (old 6509-E) and activate BGP and OSPF on the new 6513-E .
Now all layer 3 functionality is running on the new 6513-E. We should be up and running again.
    - Now plug out the cables from the second 6509-E and get it out of the rack
    - Build the 6513 into the rack
    - Connect it to the other 6513 with a trunk.
    - Connect cables
    -Etcetera

  • New Core 2 Duo iMac Memory specification confusion

I'm confused about the memory specification for the new iMac (late 2006). In the article 303084, it says that the new iMac models, other than 17 " model, accept DDR2 PC2 5300 667Mhz SO DIMM. But in the other article ( 304284 ), it says that the memory is DDR2 PC2 5400 667Mhz SO DIMM. So which one does it take? I'm just about to pick up the new iMac tomorrow and I already have 2 sticks of 1GB of DDR 5300 lying around. Can I use these 2 sticks in the new iMac? The brand of the memory is Samsung. Are they compatible with the new iMac? For all you guys out there who upgraded the memory in the new iMac, which brand do you use? I live in Australia, so brands like Crucial and OWC are hard to find. The popular local brands here Samsung, Corsiar, Twin Mos and Kingmax. I bought the Samsung from a friend who pulled them out from a Dell Laptop which he hated and sold it after a week of ownership. Now he's a proud owner a new Macbook Pro with 2GB of RAM installed from the factory. I would like to a make good use of these 2 Samsung RAMs. Thank you.

    P'Boy,
No worries. The PC2-5400 that appears in the article you cite is a misprint. The iMac Core 2 Duo takes PC2-5300 memory. I have the new Core 2 Duo and verified this by looking at the memory modules. While PC2-5400 may well work in the iMac Core 2 Duo, PC2-5300 is the type of memory specified by Apple to work with this computer.
Samsung is a fine brand, and is one of the brands used by Apple, so it should function just fine. Cosair is another fine brand, though I have not had occasion to use Cosair memory in a Mac (I've used it in a number of PCs).
Bottom line. Your Samsung PC2-5300 modules should work just fine. Enjoy your new Core 2 Duo!

  • Would FCP3 run on new Core 2 Duo iMacs?

I've been using FCP3 academic for editing my home videos as a hobby for years. I'd like to move up to the new Core 2 Duo imac with 2 GB of ram for speed and USB2 etc. I also have FCEHD.
Does anybody know if FCP3 will run on the new iMac? If so, will it be slower or faster than it would run on my old eMac?
    Thanks,
    Maurice

Yes, of course it will. But it will be in Rosetta-mode, I believe, unless you get your hands on the universal app:
    http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
If you don't have Final Cut Studio already it may be an expensive upgrade, but you may be able to call Apple and perhaps there is a way to just upgrade FCP without buying all of Final Cut Studio. (Although I highly recommend DVD Studio Pro over iDVD...)

  • Keep running into a "Out of Memory Error" on new Core i7 machine?

Hey everyone, I have a brand new MacBook Pro running 2.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 with 8GB of ram, I'm trying to render out a quicktime movie that is 50 minutes of HD footage, everytime I do I get this error. what can I do to get this render done? very frustrating that I'm getting an error like this on a brand new machine. Any suggestions? Thanks

You have either still images that are in some color mode other than RGB or corrupted render files.
The still images can be corrected in Photoshop or Graphic Converter. Otherwise try deleting your render files and rendering again. You might try rendering each segment that needs it (Render Selection) to narrow it down to a particular area of your Timeline.
The error message has nothing to do with how new your computer is or what it is capable of -it is always caused by incompatible or damaged files.
