New 8-core versus 12-core for LPX

Hi,
Any opinions on whether the newest 12-core Mac Pro would show vast performance improvements over the 8-core Mac Pro? Worth the sizable dollar difference?
Planning on 32G ram regardless. (A major investment either way)
Setup approx 20-30 VI's + 50 audio tracks + 28 submix auxes in Logic. Also Local VEP Server housing orch samples (16 Kontakt instances). Dragging video as well.
3.0GHz 8-core with 25MB of L3 cache
versus
2.7GHz 12-core with 30MB of L3
Any insight greatly appreciated.

Even if Leopard comes out fully supporting 64-bit applications, it won't turn 32-bit applications into 64-bit applications, and it's very unlikely that many applications will be quickly converted for full 64-bit use. Most programs won't benefit from 64-bit addressing.

You have to use the crossgrade/update 7.2 for Logic Pro to work on an Intel Mac.
It is now available and people have ordered it but I don't think anyone has received their upgrades as yet.
It has been pointed out both by Apple and in numerous other places that Logic Pro will not run under Rosetta so unless you have 7.2 it aint gonna be working......
If you DO have 7.2 already, then please tell us more.....

New 12-core Crashing on Premiere CS5

Hi gang,
Been using a new 12-core for 2 weeks now. Lots of graphics and VFX apps working great, except Premiere CS5. Sometimes I get 20 minutes out of it, sometimes three hours, but it always either kernel panics, or completely locks up the system requiring power down. Assuming this is related to Adobe since it only happens in Premiere CS5, I've been chatting up their support forum:

They claim that they can't see what in Premiere would be causing this and that it must be my system, probably over heating. Strange thing is I'm now back to using CS4 and I can't crash the system yet, even when I try with like 20 apps running + CS4...
Everything is updated, I ran hardware test, repaired permissions, etc. Any ideas???

Wish people would wait before a conole system log dump.
Mac Pro Mid-2010 boots into 64-bit kernel mode by default now. Try running in 32-bit.
If you migrated applications from pre-Mac Pro, that can cause trouble.
Until you figure it out, consider first fresh OS install, clone so you have one good system, then do all your work on new TEST system in the meantime.
While you work and panic, loss of files, directory, system can become unstable and need constant repairs. Hence use SuperDuper and set up some backup clones to work from, and Disk Warrior to repair and rebuild the directory.
Anything that isn't "64-bit clean" drivers and plug-ins would be one.
For 12-core I'd be running with 6 x 2GB minimum, probably 6 x 4GB for anything more than light to medium.
And of course until Apple ships a 'unified build' the MacPro5,1 is past 10.6.4 that is what Adobe and others have to work with until they start testing on new Westmere systems.
Not sure what between your CS4 and CS5 is different but at least you have a 'work around' for now. Guess it has had more testing and CS5 is still on shake-down cruise that any new ship has during first year.

Its Time To Upgrade My Computer/ Need Some Advice, old or new 8 core

well my dual 2.0 had a nice run but its time to move on up.i use alot of software plugs, omnisphere , bfd2 etc and my machine can't handle it. my question is. do i get a older 8 core and save some money or get one of the new ones. and also which speed. i know there is 3 new 8 core.
if i feel its worth it i would spend the extra money and get the latest and greatest, but do i need too? someone was mentioning muliithreading and things i know nothing about. also did the older 8 cores drop in value yet? and where is a good place to shop for one

I was recently in the market for a new Mac Pro. My Dual 2gig had seen it's last mix ; )
I was originally lurking on EBay but I wasn't impressed with the prices on used 8-cores so, on a whim, I actually called one of the local Apple stores just to see if they had any left. Sure enough they had one 2.8 8-core in stock. Their price was $2499 (fortunately I am a part-time audio production teacher as well) and I received the EDU discount and got it for $2299 (plus the icky Illinois/Cook County/Chicago tax).
I would definitely hunt for a Old(New) one.

I want a new Imac Core 2 Duo how do I move my files from my PowerPC G3?

I want to get a new Imac Core 2 Duo but I can't figure out how to move my old files from my very old PowerPC G3 to a new Imac when I get it -- which I hope is very soon. The G3 has a CD drive but it is not a CD burner, has a Zip Drive, does not have firewire ports or USB ports -- how on earth can I move my stuff over to the new computer? It does have a 10baseT port [I think that's what it is] -- maybe that's the key? I hope someone can help.

2sockeye, yes, you can use the new mac's Migration Assistant Program to help you move files etc to your new mac via a firewire connection.
Before you do that, search more on "migration" etc on this Discussion; Move only your data files (music, photos) as much as possible but do not move applications and especially system files, preferences that may or will override what's in your new Intel mac, it will cause corruption or an unstable system.
Download and install all the applications from ground up, especially 3rd party utilities etc - look for the Universal versions (either stated, or with a blue "ying yang" logo)

No, when you go through the beginning of setting up your new Mac, a page with the Migration Program would appear, and ask you questions on how and what kind of migration you want to perform, it will also ask you (with given instructions) connect the 2 macs up with a firewire cable - this cable goes into your firewire ports
If you don't have a firewire port on your old computer, then search again in this Discussion and under the Support tab, whether on how to transfer data on macs without FW ports

Original 23" cinema display and new 23"display with new 8 core MacPro

I am posting this experience to help others with similar questions.
I just upgraded my tower from a dual 2.7 G5 to a new 8 core Mac Pro. I am using 2 23" cinema displays. One is an original first generation display (ADC connector) and the second is a newer 23" aluminum cased display.
The original CD needs to use the ACD to DVI converter and has to be plugged into the DVI port on the Radeon 4870 card. Using the mini-display to DVI convertor will not work. The newer display will work in either port. Both displays now work as they did before...no issues.
I hope this clarifies the situation for others with older displays

Aaah, thanks again Apple! So that's why they modded the videocard, to sell more new displays.
We got a set of fresh mac pro's yesterday, all fitted with the ATI Radeon 4870. I've just fitted it to our (< 1 year old) DELL 2408WFP displays. Unfortunately only the one with the regular DVI connector works. The one connected to the miniDVI does not recognize the monitor at all. (using the ACD to DVI) Not in windows, not in osx. I've tried the updated ATI drivers within windows, this does not do the trick. So thanks Apple, for almost delivering a good piece of hardware and not telling anyone about this problem.
If there's any news other then "buy new displays" i'll post it here.

Ordered a New 8 Core - OWC Memory OK?

I finally bit the bullet and ordered the new 8 core Mac Pro.
I need more memory, and while I normally do Crucial.com I used OWC in this case because it was substantially cheaper. I was able to get 4GB of OWC for less than the cost of 2GB from Crucial!
This is my first time to deviate from Crucial and I am a little nervous about it. Can anyone assuage my fears and share some experiences with OWC ram?

I ordered a new 4 core Mac Pro. I ordered TechWorks memory based on OWC reputation for support and much positive commentary about the TechWorks memory.
BTW, there is lots of information already in the forum about owc memory easily found with a search like this: mac pro memory owc.

New Mac Book Pro & Logic Pro vs New 8 Core Mac

I think this question may have been answered. a question, but here goes anyway. I am using a new Macbook Pro duel core and running Logic Pro on it. I get "system overload" every time I start playback on multiple tracks. Then if I restart the playback it runs pretty well. My question is, if I was using the new 8 core big Mac would I be running smooth with no hiccups or overload conditions? Even though my Macbook Pro is new, is it the wrong machine for running Logic Pro? I have 2GB of Ram. I also run Pro Tools LE 7.4 with a 002 Digi Surface Controller with no problems.
Advice please?

The "system overload" warnings have plagued all systems, regardless of how many cores are present: PowerPC:s, Intels, Tigers and Leopards..

New 8 Core sort of weirdness

So we just got a new 8 core Mac Pro for one of our animators and i am setting it up with software. The weird thing i just noticed is that the second drive we ordered is named, and this is straight out of the box, "NotQuiteMaxDisk".
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Ordered New 8 Core Today ... is it worth it?

I bought my first Mac in San Diego in 1984. It was the original 128K Mac. I was in the Navy at the time, and I set my beloved machine up in the Harpoon Missle Launch Room, a space no bigger than a walk-in closet, on the USS Elliot (a Spruance Class Destroyer stationed at the 32nd Street Naval Station near downtown SD). My Mac went with me on all of the Elliot's deployments ... including (2) WESPACs ... into the farthest reaches of the Pacific Ocean. Like me, My 128K Mac became a "golden shellback" when we crossed the equator at the 180th meridian after returning to SD from Australia (this is the domain of the Golden Dragon, ruler of the 180th meridian, for all of you slimy wogs).
Fast forwarding to 2007, I ordered my 10th Mac today (MAC X). A 3.0 GHz 8 core machine with 1GB of RAM (which I've already upgraded with a matched quad to 5GB thanks to RamJet ... a good start considering the fact that this system drained my bank account), a 500GB start-up drive (with two 750GB Seagate Barracudas that I plan to turn into a 1.5TB RAID 0 thanks to ZipZoomFly), an ATI Radeon X1900 XT video card, two 16X SuperDrives, Airport Extreme, Bluetooth, etc ...
X Macs & 23 years later ...
From a 128K Mac to this new octocrazy X-gen wonder ... I feel a bit nostalgic and perhaps a little gasp old tonight ...
Of course when the machine finally arrives, all of that will change.

My new 8 core shipped out of Shenzehn China on Wednesday. By Thursday night it was in Anchorage. It arrived at my home the next morning.
The machine arrived in perfect working order with everything I ordered in tact. As usual, Apple met my high expectations.
The migration from my G4 went smooth, only a few minor hiccups. I used Apple's Migration Assistant with firewire and put my G4 in target disk mode. I've seen some horror stories in these forums, but I experienced no pain.
I installed (2) 750GB drives and configured them as a RAID 0. This was a snap. The drives install easily in the Mac Pro's well designed enclosure. No power cords and no data cords! What a great design.
I also installed an additional 4GB of RAM. This was a breeze too. As a design engineer, I'm impressed. My hat is off to the engineers who worked on this.
The wireless keyboard & mouse sync'd up easily with the Mac. I also tested my new Motorola KRAZR over blue tooth ... no problem. Apple's website says iSync is compatible with RAZR & KRAZR phones, but that's not the case. I am unable to use iSync (I suspect this will be fixed soon).
I downloaded and ran Bootcamp this afternoon. It was easy. I loaded my Mac Pro with Windows XP Pro, and only ran into one problem. The ATI driver sought out by Bootcamp seemed to be incompatible with my X1900. I found a solution on these boards however, and resolved the driver problem in a bout an hour ... not a big deal ... all things considered.
There is one thing I found out about Bootcamp today that I hadn't heard here before. Windows doesn't recognize my wireless keyboard and mouse. I'm not sure if there is a workaround for this yet, but I suspect not. This will probably be resolved in the official release of Bootcamp when Leopard comes out in October. Until then, I guess I'm stuck with an extra USB keyboard and mouse on my desktop ...
I haven't tried to load Pro-Engineer yet ... that will be the ultimate test for me.
Tiger runs awesome of course. I transcoded a movie from DVD-9 format to DVD-5 format to see how the octo would perform. Normally this took about an hour on my G4. The 8 core Mac Pro chewed thru in in less than two minutes.
All in all, I'm very pleased thus far. I'm liking this new toy a lot. I think it might be worth it ... I copy that on the Ferrari David!

Getting new 8 core today - will it run Leopard?

My 2006 Mac Pro died today. I have 4 SATA drives in it's bays. One of the HD's has a Snow Leopard install and another has Leopard 10.5.8 on it. The other two have media files on them. I want to drop all 4 into the new Mac Pro and pull the one it comes with (for now)
Will I be able to option boot into my 10.5.8 HD like I did with my old Mac or will the new 8 core not let me run an OS lower than what it came with?
I'm a Pro Tools user under a deadline and it would be extremely convenient (I'm really under the gun at the moment) to just boot right into my Leopard drive and keep working!

My suggestion would be to get an older Mac that is capable of running Leopard in your case. The newer Mac is only going to cause you grief with your older software.

VIDEO IN on new Quad Core iMac?

Hello FOlks.
I have a Digital Night Vision Monocular I need to connect video in on my Quad Core iMac.
Can anyone tell me WHICH CABLE is the cheapest and best for this?
I need a standard video like from a camcorder plug, I've seen converters with multiple video input sources even.
I already read discussions about it, I just need to know WHICH MODELS work with the new video input feature of the newest iMac's like mine.

Your topic subject line says "VIDEO OUT on new Quad Core iMac."
You will not be able to use RCA input (or any other composite input such as S-Video) on the new 27-inch iMac's Mini DisplayPort. The only input that works there is DisplayPort, which can be from regular DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort output. There are some costly adapters that convert DVI to DisplayPort, but I do not know of any other type. One issue is going probably going from an analog signal to digital.
You may instead find success using a USB video input interface device. The most popular are by Miglia and Elgato. Such devices usually come with software that allows you to display and capture video input from various sources.

RAM on the new Quad core 2.5ghz G5

I am thinking about running Logic 7 on one of the new Quad core 2.5ghz G5’s. I am currenty running Logic 7 on an 800mhz G4 iMac. I have 1 GB of RAM on my iMac and I was wondering how much RAM I should get if I purchase the Quad core G5. Since there will be 4 processors, I’m sure I will have TONS of processing power for plug-ins and a high number of edits and lots of automation, but I was wondering how much it would really help me if I loaded the machine to capacity with RAM. For instance, would I ever even need more than 1GB of RAM or is getting 8GB of RAM really going to increase performance that much on a Quad core G5? I’m sure 16GB of RAM is OVERKILL. I’m hoping someone who is competent on this subject will be able to help. I already know the generic “you can never have too much RAM” answer. That’s not the answer I’m looking for. I’m hoping that someone will be able to give some guidance as to what would be overkill and what might be just the right amount. For each session, I will be recording upwards of 30 audio tracks, probably using around 15-20 plug-ins and 3 or 4 of those will be reverbs which use up a lot of computer power. I just want a stable system that will be able to last me for a few years. I’ve outgrown the capabilities of my 800mhz G4 iMac and I’m hoping that my next system will be able to last me for a while.

it really depends on how you personally use logic. as a basic minimum I don't think anyone would tell you that under 1GB is a good idea. but if you never use sample based instruments, large reverb impulse responses and so on, then having more than 1GB is not necessarily going to make a difference at all.
but when you start working with a lot of VIs (particularly ones that load in a lot of sample data) and running mixes that have large numbers of plug ins in use, you will need more RAM. people often make the mistake of thinking more RAM will incrementally improve performance in some general way, which it doesn't - this is what having a faster processor does. performance improvement from RAM is more of an obvious thing, when you have previously hit a wall from working on a huge RAM intensive project.. once you remove the RAM bottleneck so that the OS no longer works with swap files, it's kind of a once-off improvement, ie, it will work as well as it can and that's that.

Intel Quad Core for Premiere - is this a smart choice ?

Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if Intel's new Quad Core processor ( 2.4 Ghz ) will give a good boost to system performance over an older Intel 3.2 Ghz Ht chip.
I have seen test results where a 1.6 ghz dual core Intel processor has lost in speed tests vs regular 3.2 ghz chips ( not dual core )
So I'm puzzled,, will a Quad Core chip have any advantage when running Premiere ?
I'm hoping there is a clear cut answer here, and I look forward to any responses.

Before you all go out and throw a party...
My understanding is that with regards to CS3:
1. 32bit XP normally supports up to 2gigs of ram. 4gigs if you modify a line in the bootstrap file. But 4gigs is divided into 3gigs for apps and 1gig for system stuff.
2. 64bit XP is not supported.
3. 64bit Vista is not supported yet.
Here's the specs from Adobe:
- Intel® Pentium® 4 (1.4GHz processor for DV; 3.4GHz processor for HDV), Intel Centrino®, Intel Xeon® (dual 2.8GHz processors for HD), or Intel Core Duo (or compatible) processor; SSE2-enabled processor required for AMD systems
- Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional or Home Edition with Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise (certified for 32-bit editions)
- 1GB of RAM for DV; 2GB of RAM for HDV and HD; more RAM recommended when running multiple components

Operating systems based on Microsoft Windows NT technologies have always provided applications with a flat 32-bit virtual address space that describes 4 gigabytes (GB) of virtual memory. The address space is usually split so that 2 GB of address space is directly accessible to the application and the other 2 GB is only accessible to the Windows executive software.
The 32-bit versions of the Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Windows NT Server 4.0, Enterprise Edition, operating systems were the first versions of Windows to provide applications with a 3-GB flat virtual address space, with the kernel and executive components using only 1 GB. In response to customer requests, Microsoft has expanded the availability of this support to the 32-bit version of Windows XP Professional and all 32-bit versions of Windows Server 2003.
Windows 2000 Memory Support. With Windows 2000 Professional and Server, the maximum amount of memory that can be supported is 4 GB (identical to Windows NT 4.0, as described later in this section). However, Windows 2000 Advanced Server supports 8 GB of physical RAM and Windows 2000 Datacenter Server supports 32 GB of physical RAM using the PAE feature of the IA-32 processor family, beginning with Intel Pentium Pro and later.
Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003 Memory Support. The maximum amount of memory that can be supported on Windows XP Professional and Windows Server 2003 is also 4 GB. However, Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition supports 32 GB of physical RAM and Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition supports 64 GB of physical RAM using the PAE feature.
The virtual address space of processes and applications is still limited to 2 GB unless the /3GB switch is used in the Boot.ini file. When the physical RAM in the system exceeds 16 GB and the /3GB switch is used, the operating system will ignore the additional RAM until the /3GB switch is removed. This is because of the increased size of the kernel required to support more Page Table Entries. The assumption is made that the administrator would rather not lose the /3GB functionality silently and automatically; therefore, this requires the administrator to explicitly change this setting.
The /3GB switch allocates 3 GB of virtual address space to an application that uses IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE in the process header. This switch allows applications to address 1 GB of additional virtual address space above 2 GB.
The virtual address space of processes and applications is still limited to 2 GB, unless the /3GB switch is used in the Boot.ini file. The following example shows how to add the /3GB parameter in the Boot.ini file to enable application memory tuning:
