New 80 gig Video iPod and Handbrake problems

I just purchased a new 80 gig Video iPod. I took one of my DVD movies that I own and used Mac The Ripper and DVD2One to get it onto my Powerbooks Hard Drive. I then used Instant Handbrake to make it iPod ready. It loaded fine into iTunes 7 (with the newest updates) and also played fine from within iTunes. When I went to sync it up with my new iPod iTunes gave me a message stating that this movie is not the correct format for this iPod. So I then tried using the full version Handbrake and got the same message. I know that either of these should work because I set a friend up with these same programs and we put his movies onto his 5th Gen 60 gig iPod without any problems. However, I researched iPod video conversions for the new iPods on the Apple website here and learned that there is a feature in iTunes 7 under advanced, when you highlight a video, you can go under Advanced and click on Convert Selection for iPod. Is this something that I'm going to have to do everytime, or does someone know an easier way to put MY DVDs into iTunes for my new 5th Gen 80 gig Video iPod? Please help because this process takes waaaaaaayyyyyyy tooooooo long!

It all depends on what your target settings were and whether or not you were attempting to incorporate Baseline LC Profile features into your movie. Basically, if you use the H.264 codec at VGA resolutions or with video data rates which exceed 768 kbps or wish to include chaptering, then you will have to use QT Pro v7.1.3/iTunes 7 conversion (or the latest version of ffmpegX or ViddyUp!) to create an LC iPod compatible file. (MPEG Streamclip and probably HandBrake programmers are still working on their LC upgrades.)

now here is the problem. is any one haveing this problem also
anyt ime ive tried to update the content (music, videos, photos, podcasts, and what not) i got a problem saying
"attempting to copy to the disk "bernard lor" failed. the disk could not be read from or written to"
that happened the first 3 times. i un installed the software and reformatted my ipod.
tried to update it with the previous up dater and when it was intilizing it said "Ipod service error"
so then i just went and reinstalled itunes 7
now . the first time i tried to update the contents, it didnt update, tried it agian and about 10 of 674 songs went on it and it was done :S
confused i did it agian and another 180 went on. then it said "attempting to copy to the disk "bernard lor" failed. the disk could not be read from or written to"
so far every time ive dont it it just adds more songs to the ipod but in chunks. and never updates the whole thing in one shot like it used to
its been about 5 times since re installing itunes that it has said "attempting to copy to the disk "bernard lor" failed. the disk could not be read from or written to"

im stuck as to what to do.
is anyone else havein gthis problem?
i guess the real thing i have a probme with is
    1 is my ipod broken
2 is ther a problem where all the songs cant be loaded up at the same time?
3 why does my screen dim down when pluged in and not go off compleatly like it used to. i never ever saw the screen go from on and light up to dimed down but still on:S it usually goes straight to no light on.
any one have thoughts or experience any of this?

Last week there was a customer service phone number and I was able to talk to a very nice woman, Michelle, who tried several steps with me to repair. When we got off the line, I was given a case number to use to call back if the patch she emailed to me did not work. She did say that this is an issue with 7 and PCs that has not been resolved.
Stupid me did not write the phone number down and it has been removed from their web site. I guess the amount of calls was too much.
Like others, I have never even used my 30GB Ipod because of version 7. When Itunes does recognize it, it won't sync without trying to restore and then all of it crashes. I put it back in the box and keep checking the website for new software.

  • 30-gig video iPod and new games

I downloaded one of the new games (Mahjong) to my WinXP iTunes (v.7.0) w/o problem, but I can't load it to my iPod (v.1.2) without getting the "can't run it on this computer" error message. {Yes, I know we can't run these games w/i iTunes on the computer .. that's not the issue!} I tried changing my iPod settings (w/i iTunes) to sync. all games .. and Mahjong was listed .. and then I tried "dragging" the game to my connected iPod .. no luck.
    Any ideas?
DSeagrave: Correcton .. the error message says I'm not authorized to play the game on this computer.

    yeop, thats video
well, perhaps sign in to iTunes Music store with the user ID that u used to buy the game... its a long shot, but it could be some weird bug.
you are using the same computer that you used to purchase the game correct?
hmm.. thats a long shot.. but it's worth a go...
aside from that i would suggest ringing apple, or going into an Apple store..
or, "restore" your iPod software? reinstalling iTunes..
they are rather nasty options... anyone else got suggestions?

  • New 60g Video iPod - already having problems...one week old.Figure this out

    Christmas gift...arrived New Years.
I got 4 music videos on it and about 30 songs via iTunes.
After the first week of fun and impressing my friends - it won't hold a charge.
I have tried charging it via the 2.0 USB ports in my Gateway PC...I don't think that's the problem.
But thinking it might be - I went ahead and bought a AC wall adapter (Griffin PowerBlock) at Best Buy...to get a decent charge on it.
Tried that for two days...didnt help.
I kept getting low batttery alerts after a only an hour or so of use after charging.
The Geek at Best Buy said her 60gig has 20 g of songs and two whole movies and it never has had a low battery alert.
She said go see the Appla people.
So I went to the local Apple store at 1:00Pm today...I went to the Genius bar and they said to make an appointment on their computer....
Next available appointment was after 5:00 this evening.
So in the meantime I took the PowerBlock back to Best Buy and shelled out some more money for "Apples" AC power adapter.
Today I charged it for 8 hours.
I just plugged it in to the PC,...it recognized the iPod, updated the songs and that was that..."Low Battery" alert again and now I'm having trouble getting it to even reset.
Tell me this thing is covered under a warranty...or
someone at Apple will be wearing it as a nose ring.

Yeah...I did a test this morning doing petty much the same things you mentioned...energy management 101.
I had what the battery meter SAID was a full charge..(I had done a charge off my car iPod car Power adapter that doubles as a transmitter to my car radio...it is one of the only things that seems to unfreeze the darn iPod every time it goes dead with now infamous "low battery alert".
So I think to myself..on the way to Best Buy and Apple, lets just see how long this thing can play off a charge before it goes dead.
So I shut off shuffle, repeat play etc, no EQ, no backlight, and just play it stand alone with no power cord hooked up.
    Results?
It went completely thru my 30 song playlist and then went dead with a low power warning...that's two hours and fifteen minutes.
Tonight I went for the big one with my new Lemon, oh sorry, I mean Apple AC ower adapter.....full 8 hour charge...what did I get ...three or four minutes of iPod upload.
    Then kaput..
    I want a replacement - or a full refund.
    Period.

  • 30G Video IPod and Windows Vista - Help!

I just recently bought a new computer equipped with Windows Vista. I have a 12" G4 iBook that was my main computer from which I ran my 30G Video iPod, and now I am wanting to sync my iPod with my new Windows computer, and this will be the only system I use with my iPod.
I realize there are many problems with compatibility of iTunes/iPods with Windows Vista.
My question is, barring the problems with iTunes, I downloaded the latest iTunes anyways and tried to use Yamipod to bring my 1600+ songs onto my computer from my iPod by bypassing iTunes. Problem is, my computer doesn't even recognize the iPod at all. iTunes does, but when I cancel the box asking me to reformat my iPod to Windows format and try to use Yamipod, Yamipod doesn't even recognize an iPod existing. I thought maybe it was just the program, so I tried about 4 others, but nothing. I also used the cd that came with my iPod and put the drivers onto this computer, but the actual computer still doesn't even recognize it plugged in.
Any ideas? Also, because a lot of my songs are in m4a format, how will that work if I am able to put them on this computer? Will I have to convert them all to mp3?
Thank you for any help you can give.

And given that Vista has been available in Release
candidate version for ages and that the release date
has been known for ages, shouldn't apple have made
the effort to make itunes compatible with Vista?
After all, the vast majority of itunes users live in
    Windows land.
perhaps you should familiarise yourself with the common usage and implications of the symbol string
but as you clearly aren't familiar with it, if i took your question seriously, which i don't, then the answer is no...
your argument is that being first and being in the majority rules
that'll be apple then won't it
    i) i can't be bothered to check the itunes release date, certainly it was out in 2001, which is several years before microsoft even figured out what to call the os formerly known as longhorn, let alone finished sawing off the pieces it couldn't make work
ii) the majority of people with portable music players use ipod/itunes, so it is for microsoft to conform with the majority and not make changes that impair the products used by the majority
so, by your own argument, it is microsoft's responsibility to maintain compatibility

  • Loading DVD's on 80 gig Video Ipod

We got a new 80 gig Video Ipod for christmas and want to load our DVD's. We tried down loading a software that didn't work. Can someone make recommendation of an easy software that works, and since I am not real computer savvy any detailed instruction would be appreciated.

There are plenty of good free programs out there. Here is a link to a discussion on just that free programs for mac and windows. http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=123067
You really do not need to pay for a program and if you do choose to do so consider another product then the one from that is recommended by Spammers... that would be cucosoft. They are all over these threads. There are also some great pay programs out there. But again, try the free ones first. Then if not do a search and you will find many, many pay programs out there from companies far more reliable then the one recommend by the SPAMMER on this thread.
Also another free program that works well is this one:

  • FROZEN 60 GIG Video iPod

I have a brand new 60 GIG Video iPod. The iPod froze during the import of new music and video files. The display has the "Do not disconnect" icon and label shown in the display. Attempting to reset the iPod using the instructions from Apple's support site for iPod issues - the five R's, the iPod will not respond to any of the options provided. Is there another solution to reset the iPod or is this one just destined to be replaced under warranty?

  • "White Screen" error after most recent update 60 gig video iPod

I just received the most recent iPod updater software. I installed the updater and ran same. After the update process my 60 gig video iPOD cannot be recognized by my MAC G5. It has a "White Screen" and WILL NOT turn off! When I attempt a reset it simply gives me a 2 or 3 tone beep (I've never heard the tone before). The screen goes dark and it reboots to a white screen. I've re-installed updater and iTunes. I've switched USB ports. I've shut down the computer as well as rebooted same. I've allowed the iPOD to fully discharge (which happened quickly since the screen will not blank). When the unit is plugged into the USB port it charges and the white screen reappears. The updater now refuses to see the iPod so I cannot reset to factory defaults. Any ideas?
The idiots at Apple instituted a 24/7 chat tech support line for iPod shuttle owners. The guys like me who paid the big bucks for their best product get stuck out in the cold! Apple's whole tech support schtick is barely one step ahead of Dell's! The charge premium prices for their product and I like Apple a lot, but their demand that you be either an Apple Care customer or .MAC user to get even rudimentary support *****!

Ok, for all the others out who experience this problem....I spent about an hour on the phone with Apple. You have to go to their SECOND level of support to get an answer. But there is a fix.
If you have a white screen and the unit beep 3 times after a reboot here's what you need to do to fix the problem. Warning all you data will be lost. It will have to be downloaded via iTunes again!
Disconnect the iPod from the computer. Hold the Select and Menu button down for about 7 seconds to until you get a beep. Then hold down the Select and PLAY button for 10 seconds. This will put the unit in hard disk mode. Wait awhile until the Apple screen goes away and if you get a progress bar wait until it is gone.
At this point it will take some finagling, but you basically hook the iPod back up to the computer and do a RESTORE. The iPod should be recognized by iPod updater. Your data MAY still be in place, but if you do not do a restore to factory defaults with the updater you will get the white-screen-three-beeps-problem again.
Once you reboot into the language screen you can reconnect the iPOD and download your data from iTunes.
I complained this info SHOULD be posted online. They guy was very nice and agreed but said that engineering was still collecting data. He thought it was a dumb idea not to post online or allow the first level support guys to fix the problem.
Hey Apple...if you read this how about collecting data on your goddamned time and at your expense. You're the SOBs that collected $399 for the product! Ever seen the Comcast or AOL video on YOUTUBE? You guys could be next!

  • New 30g video iPod not fully accessible.

    Hi all,
I looked around but couldn't find any replies specific enough for my sitch.
I just got a brand new 30g video iPod last week. I tried to load it up this weekend using my 2002, 1ghz, 17" flat panel iMac (usb 1.0/firewire).
I'm able to load playlists/music on my iPod (10.75 gigs so far) but I can't load videos. When I try, I get a message saying , more or less, that "the video can't be loaded on this iPod". Also, in iTunes, I only get tabs in the iPod section for:
    Summary
    Music
    Podcasts
    Contacts
And, under summary it reads: n/a for Software Version and n/a for Serial Number. And it says - Format: Windows. Since it was brand new out of the box, I figured it would have configured itself to Mac automatically?????? And "Software Update" and "Restore" are grayed out and not useable.
I thought all this might have something to do with using a usb 1.0 port on my iMac but I used a PC laptop with usb 2.0 and iTunes to check the iPod with and got these results:
I got more tab choices for the iPod such as: Movies, Photos, etc. and it showed the Software Version and Serial Number of the iPod but when I tried loading a video, I still got the same message saying that the video couldn't be loaded on this iPod.....huh????
Anybody know what's going on. I want to use the iPod to it's full capability and I want to use it mainly with my iMac because that is where I have all of my music and movies/videos (total of about 19 gigs worth of music and video). I'd rather not have to transfer all that to the PC.
Do I need to use Disk Utility to erase the iPod? I just don't want to mess it up.
    Thankxx
    vanessa_b

Hi, just to be clearer guy's:
    1. I'm not trying to upload movies from DVD's just digitized, downloaded videos.
    2. I am only using iTunes to manipulate the iPod, thought that was clear.. :/
    3. I tried the different video formats just to see if any at all would load.
I'll try to restore on the PC laptop. I'm still confused as to why the box says "PC/Mac" but upon connecting it to my iMac right out of the box, it was Windows formatted???
Oh well, let me give the PC restore a try. I'll let you all know.

just thought i'd set the record straight for those who are thinking of getting a video ipod and already have vista .
you know , just fyi .
but i am wondering , how well does the ipod record notes ?
and anyone here in a band and tape their rehearsals ? was wondering how it sounds . thanks all !

after I watched them they dissappeared from my ipod,
Sounds like you have selected to only sync unwatched video content to your iPod.
This is a setting that you can change in your iTunes preferences.

  • Hi, since i put some mp4 video or DVD files on my external hard drives final cut prox won't recognize my hard drives, i move all the video files and the problem still exist. somebody have the solution

Hi, since i put some mp4 video or DVD files on my external hard drives final cut prox won't recognize my hard drives, i move all the video files and the problem still exist. somebody have the solution

Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?
Yes. Unfortunately the move has almost certainly caused the loss of the resource data that would have been (invisibly) attached to those files.
By adding a specific .mov extension after the fact you will have helped the Mac correctly identify the file type / asscoiations but also significantly you will have physically changed the filename eg from "clip" to "clip.mov". This means that when you come to reconnect the media in FCP , then FCP will be looking for files that no longer exist at the given path eg when specifically looking for our example clip called "clip" of course it won't find it.
Try this as a test... first remove the ".mov" extension from one or more of the clips, select those clips and press Cmd-Opt-I to open an Info window for the selection. You'll see an "Open with:" popup and in that popup you should choose QuickTime Player (if its a Unix Executable then it will initially list Terminal as the appropriate app, you have to choose Other... then in the open dialog choose Enable > All Applications and then navigate to and select the Quicktime Player app as the appropriate app). After you've done that restart FCP and see if you can now reconnect to those clips.

  • Just got my video ipod and I may have a problem

Hey guys, I literally just got my new video ipod (80gb) and when I went to plug it in to my computer, the connector that goes into the ipod doesn't go in very easily. I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but it didn't happen on my old ipod. It feels as if I'm grinding against the sides...
If this is an issue or normal please tell me. I don't want to break the thing before I use it

First question: try pushing in on the sides of the cable going into the iPod. If it is still difficult to connect make sure there is nothing impeding the connection in the iPod side or on the cable.
Second question: I've used my 5th gen iPod on many flights and have not experienced the problem and there are people who have used them in the mountains. Others are reporting problems on flights. It doesn't break the iPod, it just is resetting on them and then works again on the ground. I'm wondering if some airlines are pressurizing their cabins above the 10,000 foot level.
