New Accesslayer Switch 2960S vs 3560X

Hallo together,
so we plan to acquire new access layer switches for a medium sized LAN.
So there are three switch types we shortlisted.
1. WS-C3560X-48P-L
2. WS-C2960S-48LPD-L
3. WS-C2960S-48LPS-L
So could anybody tell me advantages / disadvantages of the 2960S against the 3560X and vice versa? Except some Layer 3 features and the Uplinkports of the Cat LPS, i can't see great distinctions.
Thanks for answer.

Hi there,
given that you already accounted for Layer 3 and that you are planning on LAN Base 3560X. lets say it gives you a total of 435W of POE power, while 2960S gives you 370W per chasis, in case u r planning for PoE. But its stackable unlike 3560's.
in 3560 you get a bit more flexiblity in QoS, but not that much though.
then I'd say, here come's the price!
Hope it Helps,
Soroush.

  • NAC is not managing new Cisco Switch 2960S

    Hello,
we want to add a Cisco Switch 2960S to the devices, but CAM says he is unable to control that switch.
The switch type Cisco WS-C2960-8TC-L is already running on the CAM.
Is there a OID Update for the 2960S?
    Our CAM version is 4.5.1.

    Solution:
    Use the update on CAM:
-> Device Management -> Clean Access -> Updates -> Update
to get new OIDs for the switches.
This solved the problem. The device was added afterwards successfully.

  • AAA configuration on switches 2960

    Hi
I have introduced the following configuration of AAA in the switches of series 2950 and works very well,
but when I do the same in switches 2960, the local password does not work and it is obligatory to introduce the switch in the ACS to have management of the switch.
Is needed some additional configuration of AAA in switches 2960?
    Thanks.

Perhaps some clarification of your environment might help us. In particular it would help to understand how you produce the "without ACS" environment.
Clearly the switch is still configured for ACS. And clearly there is connectivity from the switch to the ACS. And the ACS is responding to the authentication request from the switch. I am not sure what the errno 254 represents or what on the ACS server causes it. Perhaps you can help us understand that?
I had a situation at one point that may have been similar to your situation. Our devices were sending requests to ACS. But ACS was not able to communicate with the external DB because one of the services on ACS was not running. ACS responded with an error indicating unable to process. But the IOS devices were not interpreting that as an error that should send them to the backup authentication method.
If you are stopping something on the ACS server then I would suggest that a better test would be to break IP connectivity between the switch and the ACS so that the switch receives no response to its request or to change the configured IP address for the server in the switc and point to some device not running ACS so that the switch receives a port unreachable response to its request. Those would give you a better test of without ACS.

  • "When I open a link in a new tab, switch.." Doesnt work correctly

I'm using Firefox 28.0 (Waterfox build)
    I've verified that:
    - browser.tabs.loadInBackground: False
    - browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground: True
    - "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" is enabled in the UI.
It seems only some websites actually switch to the new tab. Also, sometimes, this feature will stop working all together; requiring me to toggle the Firefox UI setting and/or restart firefox.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

  • Server wont communicate with new network switch.

Hi, I hope someone can help.
I have a small office network running Macs with OS 10.6.4, HPs with Windows XP, and a mac mini server running 10.6.4 server, file sharing only.
DHCP and internet access etc is controlled by a Netgear ADSL router. All machines are connected by a 16 port 10/100 Netgear switch.
The problem is I replaced the switch with a 10/100/1000 switch and all machines connect fine except the server. This will not connect at all with the new switch, not even do any lights come on. However if I connect the server to the old 10/100 switch then to the new gigabit switch it connects fine but this defeats the purpose of the gigabit access to the server and the high speed macs on the network. The reason I upgraded in the first place! The standard Macs are Imac G5 Intel based late Snow leopard models and they have no trouble with the new switch.
Does Snow Leopard server somehow remember specific hardware on the network when setup? And needs to be changed to recognize the new?? I tried switching everything off and restarting the whole network.
I don't have a heap of knowledge but thought this should have been simple.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers, paul

    Thanks for the reply.
No it is not managed, No uplink port, uplink is auto controlled on any port.
I have swapped and swapped and swapped this is what led me to using the old switch on the server.
    This is what happens.
Putting the server cable from the server into the new gigabit switch Tried with 300m cable directly next to it. No connection on any of the 16 ports. tried several cables including longer ones etc.
Now if I use the same cable from the gigabit switch to any port on the old switch then connect a cable from any other port of the old switch to the server. Connection, no problems at all. I.E the Old switch is uplinking to the new.
It is as if the server says "hey where is the old switch I can't work without it" Thats why I thought maybe OS X server kept some sort of register of the devices when it is initially setup and this may need to be changed.
Also any other computer works fine when placed at the same access point as the server including the Standard Snow leopard Macs.
I am thinking maybe to reinstall the server OS to see what happens?
Was supposed to be a simple job. Both switches are physically exactly the same. Pull a cable out of port 1 and stick it in port 1 of the new switch etc plug it in and turn it on????

  • Switch 2960-x

i want to know if  this model (WS-C2960X-48TS-LL ) from switch 2960-X with lan lite support DHCP server  ?

    Hi!
I don't think L2 Access switch will be act as DHCP server, but you can check it here (based on IOS ver.)
    http://tools.cisco.com/ITDIT/CFN/jsp/by-feature-technology.jsp
Feature info: search for: DHCP server / view image-detail.
P.S. strange it shows DHCP SERVER even with lanlite ios. probably Feature Navigator is not the best source

  • How to connected mgmt port on switch 2960 -XR

    Hi guys,
I need of a technical support  to resolve a issue with some Switch 2960-XR and its MGMT Port installed on our infrastructure.
I'd like to reach it via ssh connection to management them from a remote station (my PC), some guides found on Internet suggested me to use a extenal Hub/switch and a PC dedicated for that like this:
    |SW1 mgmt port|------|H|
    |SW2 mgmt port|------|U|-------- PC
    |SW3 mgmt port|------|B|
I've also tried to patch the mgmt port on a port tagged with a management VLAN but it's not worked.
I ask you if there is a way to reach that SW using mngt port  without use another external SW, thanks in advance for your support

Our network is hybrid, we have CIsco Sw and IBM Sw.
For the IBM solution the configuration of mgmt port is inband (data) and use an interface called IP2 where assigning an IP address we can manage via ssh the sw. In this case we've created a dedicated Vlan 15 and assigned as IP 10.10.10.15/24 to the interface IP2.
In Cisco Sw the only ways I know is either to create a dedicated Vlan with an IP or using Out of band, but in this case I've to use an external Sw.
Which is the best solution to have the management port on Cisco Sw without to use out of band?
    thanks

  • Cannot ping or telnet to new 2948G switch

I just installed a new 2948G switch and assigned the me1 interface an IP address... it's working fine (except for a small blip yesterday due to a duplicate IP address - oops)
I cannot ping the switch's IP address, nor can I telnet to it from the same subnet. if I console into the switch, i cannot ping anything FROM the switch. If I issue a "show arp" command I get NOTHING.
this doesn't make any sense. The switch is running CatOS4000.

make sure the default gateway is correct . Also you cannot have both the SC0 interface and the ME1 interface active at the same time and the Sc0 is the active one by default because that is what most people use . Shutdown the SC0 interface if it is still active and make sure the ME is up . "set interface sc0 down" . A show interface command will show you the status of both these interfaces. "set int me1 up"
Also by using the me1 interface you are limiting the switch ,below is a little blurb out of the catos config guide.
The in-band (sc0) management interface is connected to the switching fabric and participates in all of the functions of a normal switch port, such as spanning tree, Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP), and VLAN membership. The out-of-band management interfaces (me1 and sl0) are not connected to the switching fabric and do not participate in any of these functions.

  • Packets input or output in switch 2960

    Hi all,
How to know have packets input or output of one port in switch 2960 Catalyst. Thanks you!

    Thank for your answer.
I have some problems involved Cisco Catalyst 2960 Switch.
I am using a device which includes Marvell PHY chip 88E1111. The device can send and receive PTP packet to and from my PC.
Now, I want to connect the device and the PC to Cisco Catalyst 2960 Switch, which will help me trace all of packets in the network . The test scenario is below:
    -          Switch: Cisco Catalyst 2960
    -          Tracer: Wireshark software
    -          PC: Windows 7-64 bit, plugging in Switch port 1 (interface 1)
    -          Device: FPGA board, plugging in Switch port 2 (interface 2),
operating mode: 1000Mbps, Fullduplex, no auto-negotiation, no auto power efficient-ethernet.
    -          Interface 2 of the Switch is static set by the device’s MAC
address , which ensures the Switch known the device’s MAC.
I suffered a problem. Although the RJ45 TX status led are on, there is not any packet sent to the Switch. I have no idea in this case.
Could you give me an advise please.

    MERRY X-MAS !!!
I am going to configure IOS version of brand new 4506 Switch with Supervisory engine IV. You guys know that it has separate modules of Supervisory engine, 3 to 4 blades, redundant power supply. Because of this little bit confused. Apart from doing VLAN, STP configs, should I need to do any other configs for the chassis, redundant power supplies, blades, memory ect…..
If u do have any sample configs plz do help me guys…

No configuration needed for chassis/RPS. Configuration guidelines should help

  • Strange issue with new Cisco Catalyst 2960 (IOS)

    Hello all,
I am upgrading a older 2950(100M) switch replacing it with a gigabit 2960. Installed it in the same rack, the configuration is practically non-existent just set the passwords and IP. We run a single VLAN flat network for this so I started out by patching it to the existing switch, after a few days we had an opportunity to migrate because there was some downtime so I disconnected the cables on the old and moved them to the new.. Everything seemed fine, there is connectivity and things operate, but a few days later we noticed that some network transfer activities are slow. There are no errors or log entries showing on the new switch or the old one, but the low throughput is persistent.
All ports show 1G Full duplex as they should, but what I see when I test is that traffic tests look almost asynchronous when passing switch boundaries with normal read speeds and slow writes. Reversing the direction of the test hosts I get slow reads and fast writes so it seems to 'stick' to one side of the traffic path. Testing the same equipment against differente targets without the switch boundary crossing does not show the problem. All Intra-switch tests look good (gig switches transfer near a gig and 100 switches near 100), but the moment there is a crossing things behave strangely regardless of the target (new switch is center backbone with most hosts, but does no routing). Network layout is essentially a T with everything radiating from the new switch. I can eliminate the old switch soon, but I still need to resolve the problem with the crossing to the other switch.
Everything seems to point at the inter switch links. One is a patch cable under two feet, and the other is a dedicated fiber site link. We had the vendor confirm that the site link showed no issues, but having the same symptoms on both links makes me suspect the switch has something odd happening..
I checked for duplex issues first, but didn't find any. I flushed the arp caches in all of the switches (3 total) and all of the computers as well, but the problem persists.
Could this be an STP issue ?   If so how can I set this switch as the STP root and force a refresh..
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There really isn't anything odd configured, but since CDP doesn't cross the fiber link I think it must be a q-q tunnel..

  • Switch 2960-S

    Good evening,
I have purchased a new 2960 - S switch catalyst and have configured one SVI (interface -Layer 3). But my problem is that can't to use the show ip route command on this model.
This device has the universalk9 flash.
    Thanks in advance!

You won't be able to, because it's a L2 switch, i.e. it cannot route!
