New additional WD SATA Hard Disk is a no show

I'm trying to install my new Western Digital Caviar Black 750GB [http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=487] as an additional slave drive and would really appreciate some advice.
I installed the drive as per the instruction in the Apple DIY pdf and connected the sata and power cables as directed - however the drive doesn't show in the Disc Utility or the System Profiler when I reboot from either the primary HD or the Leopard DVD.
I opened up the desktop and could feel that the new drive was warm - which I believe from my research on this forum means its getting power? but apart from that I'm at a total loss.
Another thing which might be something-or-nothing is that the primary HD [a standard Hitachi 500GB] which is installed in the top "Slot A" is listed in the System Profiler as residing in Slot B (lower) !?
I would really appreciate any pointers as I've now idea how to proceed further with the troubleshooting.

You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

Can I install and use any 2.5" SATA hard disk on my Mac Mini (Late 2012)?

I have a Mac Mini (Late 2012) which is currently housing a 500GB SATA hard disk. Unfortunately read errors have been detected and it seems to be slowing down. I want to replace this with another 500GB SATA hard disk and I was wondering whether any notebook (2.5") hard disk would work or whether I have to look for one with specific specs (such as RPM, SATA version, etc).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any 2 1/2 inch STA HD will work as long as the height is 9.5 mm or less. All most all meet this requirement except very larger capacity ones
I would opt for a SSD since those are a lot faster than a 2 1/2 HD and now they are very reasonably priced.

It will say "green" and use less power, park its head probably, and while early units had some trouble they have evolved. Variable rpm or slower rpm also. They can be much less expenisve way to add storage.

For the system, 640GB is a nice size. Look for 64MB cache to help insure your drive is the latest models which will also say "6G SATA 3" which is fine.

larger means higher density platter, I find the 1TB and larger Blacks to run hotter/warmer and companys want drives to be able to run warmer or with less cooling. - but for really cold drives other than SSD I have found all my WD 10K VRs to have the absolute coldest temps.
Just noticed Amazon having better prices than Newegg on 1TB - and WD and Hitachi.
Green for your external backup, for media libraries that are not high volume access, to run cool and less power. Enterprise for system and performance. TimeMachine sometimes makes a poor backup method with some green cases.

SATA - Hard disk led

My IDE LED also works fine with a SATA hard disk, but I use only one SATA drive. A buddy told me that his LED does not work with SATA when he uses his drives as part of a RAID array, but it works only when he uses a single SATA drive. That may be the reason your LED isn't working if you are using dual SATA drives in a RAID configuration, or one SATA and one EIDE drive.

K8N Neo2 Platinum MB + SATA Hard Disks

I am not familiar with K8N Neo2-F so consult your manual to confirm my answers to your questions:
1- "Is this also the case for the SATA connectors on the K8N Neo2-F ??" Highly likely since your motherboard is a stripped down version of the Neo2 Platinum.
2- "And do SATA 1&2 require different drivers than 3&4?" For normal SATA operation these SATA drives are respectively contol by your NF3 chipset and you Realtek chipset. When you install or update your Nvidia & Realtek driver package you install all that is required to run normal SATA operation. Should you decide to use a RAID configuration with your SATA drive then another RAID specific driver would have to be installed at system level.
3- "Also, is there a significant increase in performance when going from PATA to SATA on this series of mobos?" My answer does not take into account RAPTOR HDs which are in a super class of their own. Medium to High end latest PATA & first generation SATA HDs in the 7200 RPM class are promoted by their OEM as having respective top transfer speeds of 133 and 150 MB/s. Comparing my Seagate 120 gigs PATA HD to my other two Seagate 200 gigs SATA HDs is not very scientific since they are not all 200 Gigs. Therefore use discretion interpreting results.

It has ben a while since I did these PATA/SATA test so I am working from memory only. One thing that however sticks in my mind is that the delta between my PATA & SATA drives, for peak and steady performance, was very close to 12 MB/s in favor of first generation SATA. Could this be possibly related to (150-133), I do not know for sure.
SATA II generation are now coming to market. These new generation SATA II drives will most likely widen the performance gap between them and older SATA I or PATA drive.

I also brought a RAID CARD SYBA| SYPEX40039 bootable. attached the ssd to that.

but I have trouble to get the boot manager on to the ssd. despite not using uefi on the original install on the 1Tb drive. I can't use ghost. if I use ghost form the other partition(vista) I can clone partition but the 1TB is too huge to

Since third party clone software frequently cause system corruption and it’s not fixable, we only recommend two ways for system installation on new hard disk: performing a clean install or using windows system image restore and both ways need reactivate
Windows 7. And for system image restore, you can only do a system image recovery to a HDD or SSD that is the same size or larger than the one(s) included in the system image when it was created. You will not be able to do a system image recovery to a smaller
HDD/SSD. If the HDDs/SSDs are larger, then you will have "unallocated" space afterwards that is left over from the difference that you can extend into.
In that case, we VERY recommend you to perform a clean install for new hard disk.
Note: If you decide to use windows system image to restore your computer, you need to create a windows recovery disk (drive) for entry to Windows repair environment.

Cloning WinXP onto Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA hard disk

Greetings everybody!
I recently wanted to clone my existing (perfectly working) Windows XP Home boot hard disk onto a brand new 320 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 SATA drive, model ST3320620AS. The existing boot C-disk is a 250 GB Western Digital SATA, which is in my Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo P (the CPU being an AMD Athlon 64 3700+). The motherboard is an ASUS A8NE-FM with the SATA interface being a NVIDIA nForce4 Serial ATA Controller.
I struggled quite a bit getting the cloned Seagate SATA disk to work as a Windows XP boot drive, but eventually got it working – using Acronis True Image Home version 9, build 3.854 (http://www.acronis.com/). Here’s how I eventually succeeded; hope it may be useful to others! ( - and I of course realize that ASUS motherboards are not made by MSI, but at the same time I have seen several MSI-users reporting similar difficulties…).
A small hint: You may download, at no cost, a full-functioning version of “Acronis True Image 10 Home”, usable for a 15 days trial period (http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/download/trueimage/). If you can manage to clone your hard disk within this period, well, it’ll be completely free! A free Windows XP clone utility, which I don’t know how well functions, is XXclone, see http://xxclone.com/.
Here’s how I did (there may be other ways, but, well, this worked for me):
1) First mounted the Seagate ST3320620AS as the D-drive (the C-drive being the Western Digital boot drive). Kept Seagate factory-default jumper setting (“Limit data transfer rate to 1.5 Gbits per second “). Booted up, went into the BIOS (being Nvidia 42302e31 Phoenix AwardBIOS v6.00PG according to ”System Info for Windows” from http://www.gtopala.com/ ), and configured the Seagate drive as follows: Second Master SATA HDD, Extended IDE Drive: Auto, Access Mode: Large (NB: Do NOT select ”Auto” here!!), Capacity: 320 GB, Cylinder: 4095, Head: 240, Precomp: 0, Landing Zone: 65534, Sector: 255. Save configuration and exit BIOS.
2) Booted up on the old Western Digital C-drive. Used Seagate’s DiscWizard to format and partition the ST3320620AS (http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/discwizard). The drive was formatted NTFS (4k block size, and one single partition). This went smooth (Windows XP however complained of some of the Seagate drivers not being ”WHQL certified” – just continued, anyway). Then right-clicked on ”My Computer" --> "Manage" --> ”Computer Management” --> ”Disk Management”. Right-clicked on the Seagate disk, then clicked ”Mark Partition as Active”. The Seagate drive is now seen in Windows as drive D, and is ready for use.
3) Ran Acronis True Image Home ver. 9, build 3.854 and cloned the Western Digital disk onto the Seagate. This went smooth and took less than five minutes (data amount on the Western Digital C-drive, containing Windows XP Home, \Program Files, \Documents and Settings and not much else, being approx. 10 GB). Impressing fast cloning! Exit and shut-down.
4) Removed the Western Digital drive from the PC, keeping only the new Seagate disk. Booted, went into BIOS, configured the boot drive as the Seagate: First or Second Master SATA HDD (according to what SATA cable is being used), Extended IDE Drive: Auto, Access Mode: Large (NB: Do NOT select ”Auto” here!!), Capacity: 320 GB, Cylinder: 4095, Head: 240, Precomp: 0, Landing Zone: 65534, Sector: 255. Save and exit BIOS.
5) Booted into Windows XP Home on the newly cloned Seagate SATA drive. Success!! End of story!

Some also claim that NCQ for the Seagate drive must be disabled; I have not done this and the cloned drive boots and works perfectly with NCQ enabled. that links are useless(for MSI owners), its described bug into BIOS which cannot determinate property HDD access mode. its specified problem related to this Asus board and specific BIOS version. exactly same problem happend and arrive with Gigabyte board after update BIOS to the latest one which suppose to fix "some things" and totally unexpected in background comes this issue..... seems some of Asus BIOSes got same issue...
MSI boards doesn't have this issue in any BIOS version.

G5 Tower doesn't see SATA hard disks...a TOTAL mystery...

I was having some serious HD corruption & start-up problems with my 2 original HDs. 2 weeks ago, I bought a 1.5 TB Seagate internal Barracuda. Disk Util took a coupla tries to properly format & partition it, but I was finally able to create 5 HFS+ (Journaled) partitions. (At this stage, my goal was to create a new Boot Disk so I could run Disk Warrior on the corrupt drives since DU wasn't able to--bad b-tree Nodes--and also have a quick data-dump area in case the original HD got recognized, as it occasionally did).
At first, everything on the new Seagate (new Boot Drive) was fine. But...Disk Warrior locked up once while fixing permissions (and/or repairing the disk--I forget)...and my poor computer hasn't recognized any SATA drive since (new Seagate nor two original HDs. When I try to boot them I get broken folder icons, Prohibitory symbols, or the command-line errors superimposed on the gray startup screen (mach_kernel stuff?).
(One thing I noticed when I was booted from the OS X install disk was that the Log said that the 5 new ("now "unfindable") internal Seagate drive partitions were "inaccessible" becasue there was no Open Firmware path.) At one point, I also had to reconnect one of the HD's power connectors to the motherboard (near the PCI-X slots) since it came loose when I was installing/removing my Soundcard to test the sys w/o any peripherals. (A BIG bonk on the head to Apple for its ridiculously difficult PCI, RAM, and hard-disk mounting on the G5--just ask the stressed Motherboard PC board, the open/unprotected Hard Disk underbellies (and my skinned knuckles) about it.
Sorry for this next part which is WAY convoluted, but I want to be as specific as possible to see if I can get the help I need:
• The orig Superdrive (Sony, DW-Q28a) will ONLY boot and/or read my orig OS X install DVD. After some OS upgrade or another, about a year ago, it now spits ALL other CDs/DVDs out--so no booting from Disk Warrior or anything else. (I have an external USB DVD drive (Sony), but it is, or course, not bootable with a PPC.)
• Here's my MAJOR workaround to get some kind of working system: Bought a 1.5 TB USB Seagate Free Agent external HD. I unplugged the Superdrive (IDE) and plugged in a 4-year old IDE HD from my old G4 (running 10.3.9). I copied all data from my external LaCie Firewire HD to the FreeAgent. Unhooked the IDE HD, put the Superdrive back in & booted off the Install Disk. Erased/formatted/partitioned the LaCie FW HD and made it a boot drive. The FreeAgent is for data storage. (This is nutty as ****, though: my giant G5 tower is a giant motherboard for 2 external HDs...it's like Connecticut & New Jersey running an inaccessible New York City!)
• I bought Data Rescue 3 (still waiting for disk in the mail)--and just like DU & Disk Warrior, it doesn't even see the 2 SATA HDs.
. Replaced 3.6v PRAM battery.
• I have done every single "recommended" action: command-line fsck -y, "mac-boot", "reset-nvram", "set defaults", "reset-all". I have tried boot+Option, Single User Mode, Safe Mode, cmdOption+PR, shiftOption+CommandDel...you name it, I've done it.
Most of my data was backed up, but there are still a number of things I want off the 2 original HD's.
Can someone puh-LEASE help me? I have been tearing my hair out for 4 weeks, and my wife and kids miss me!

No you do more than everything, and more than enough. I was only saying WHY and the purpose behind 'zapping pram' thing. If the drive shows up in System Profile properly, and shows in Disk Utility as 1.5TB SEA.... you are done.
OF is my choice as quick, simple, and more thorough set of commands.
I worry about Seagate firmware. When they bought Maxtor, they seem to have lost their chef and chief cooks, that cook up firmware. Their SATA doesn't live up to their Cheetahs, that is for sure, and have had issues with iMac G5 firmware and Mac.
WD is very popular on Mac Pro, very much so, whether Black Caviars, 10K VelociRaptors, and most important: compatible.
Even on PCs, defrag tests show even current Barracudas takes much longer than any other make. And I've seen people try to zero their drives and take 10x longer (trouble with the small write I/O).

Install on a new PC after a hard disk failure on original install?

I lost the hard disk on my desktop, with Adobe X Pro installed (an update). Purchased a new desktop, and installing my applications. I can't access the failed hard disk, now only useful as a doorstop. What are the correct steps to follow to get my license for X Pro up and running on the replacement desktop?

Did you get it installed? Do you have the license key? Did you make a backup DVD/CD of Acrobat? We have no clue where you are coming from. Adobe can help you with clearing the activation issue if that is the problem, but you need to have proof of purchase or such. You might see if you can log back in where you downloaded and see if you can get it again. It also helps if you have registered Acrobat.

EBS 12 installation - SATA Hard Disk

I have got 500 GB hard disk and 2GB of RAM.
First: I want to install Oracle EBS-12 on OS " Oracle Unbreakable Enterprise Oracle Linux".
Second: I want to install second OS XP.
Third: Should I create one partition of 500GB and install windows XP in it ?

D: 50 GB (for data)

You also can use andLinux that runs Linux software inside Windows. The Linux kernel runs as a Windows service.
For the "full" Linux experience, a dedicated install is better. Also, I do not recommend OEL unless you are specifically planning to run Oracle RDBMS or app server software. OEL is a server-side o/s - and not really suited as a desktop o/s.
If you want to use Linux as a desktop o/s, then get and install either Ubunutu (Gnome desktop) or Kubuntu (KDE desktop). To see how a real Linux desktop looks like, go to youtube.com and search the keyword compiz (supported for example on Kubuntu/Ubuntu).

First go into the bios and verify that the hard drive is recognized by the bios. If it isn't, then you either have a defective hard drive or a defective motherboard controller. According to the specs on that Gateway model it uses the same chipset that a lot of Toshiba Laptops use so it should support that hard drive. Please note that while Vista and Windows 7 have built in support for SATA hard drives, XP and Windows 2000 do not and will require integrating the SATA drivers into the XP install disk. ME, 98, and all previous versions of Windows do NOT have ANY support for SATA and will NOT work with SATA period.

I believe it depends on the version of the m series you have.
on the m72e series (small form factor); there is only one 3.5" sata bay.
on the motherboard, there are 3 sata headers (cd drive/ hard drive + 1 other).
the way i did it was to order a silverstone dual 2.5 => 3.5" drive adapter that screwed into the drive slot (you have to be careful; not all drive adapters have bottom screw mounts).
This allowed me to put a 2.5" ssd and a 2.5" hard drive in the case.
otherwise, it would be pretty tight/impossible to squeeze in 2 full size 3.5" hard drives in the m72e

New Mac user, addind hard disk drives - to raid 0 or not?

How should I set up my hard drives for best performance. I will backup data only to a large 4th drive in the enclosure, or externally.
Should I use Raid 0, or have my 2nd drive loaded with CS3 and other applications? Where would I install windows for Bootcamp? Scratch disk?

Get a faster boot drive and scratch disk. Use your slowest drive for data. And 4th for Windows.
I would not put Windows on my OS X boot drive.
Focus on having enough memory for CS3.
Leave all your applications with the system boot drive, too. No benefit.
1: boot drive (750GB WD RE2 or SE16 $200)
2. scratch - WD RE2 also.
RAID if you later find you work with huge files and already have 8GB RAM.
If you later want to RAID then plan ahead and get two identical RE2 series.
3. Windows
I would keep backup external.
